LSSU is facing the league s top goaltenders in back-toback series. Last weekend, LSSU took on Ohio State s Brady Hjelle, who is No. 1 in the CCHA in goals against average (0.62), and split the series. This weekend the Lakers meet Notre Dame s Steven Summerhays, who is No. 2 in the CCHA in GAA at Nationally, Hjelle is ranked third (1.45), while Summerhays is seventh (1.59) and LSSU junior Kevin Murdock is 19th (2.07). Lake Superior State overall, CCHA vs. #6 Notre Dame overall, CCHA Notre Dame leads the all-time record against LSSU, On the road, the Lakers are , including a CCHA semifinal series at UND during the season where they lost, two games to one. That 2011 playoff series was their most-recent trip to South Bend, Ind. Last season, the Lakers split a series against the Irish at the Taffy Abel Arena, losing 4-1 on Nov. 25, 2011, and winning 5-2 on Nov. 26. Seven Lakers return as point grabbers from the series against Notre Dame. Senior forwards Nick McParland (3-6--9; ) and Domenic Monardo (3-6--9; ) both tallied a goal and an assist for the Lakers. Monardo is tied for second for the Lakers in goal scoring and first in assists, and leads in overall points with McParland is second on the team in points with During the Lakers last five games at Notre Dame, which all took place during the season, they were outscored by the Irish, The Lakers were solid defensively late in every game, however. They limited the Irish to only two third-period goals and one overtime game-winner, but gave up an average of two goals per game in the opening period. Last Weekend: On Nov. 23 the Lakers fell to Ohio State 4-1. Sophomore forward Buddy Robinson netted the Lakers lone goal at 16:22 of the third. Robinson s goal was a power-play extra-attacker goal from the defenseman line of freshman Eric Drapluk and sophomore Kevin Czuczman. The Buckeyes netted an empty-net goal at 18:22 of the third leaving OSU with a 4-1 win. Nov. 24 junior netminder Kevin Kapalka (3-2-0) recorded his first start since Oct. 26 when he was sidelined due to injury. The Lakers completed their seventh straight split of the season, defeating OSU 3-2. McParland and Monardo each tallied a first-period goal, giving LSSU a 2-0 lead. Ohio State came back with one goal at 55 seconds of the second period. Czuczman scored the game-winning goal for the Lakers at 3:10 of the third, while OSU tallied its second goal at 17:42 with an extra-attacker.

2 Lake Superior State coach Jim Roque Jim Roque became the ninth coach in the 42-year history of Lake Superior State hockey when he replaced Frank Anzalone in June of He is the second former Laker player to take the helm of the LSSU program. During his first season ( ), he led the Lakers to a finish and their first winning season since The Lakers also earned home ice for the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs for the first time since The Lakers continued their upward climb in by finishing and reaching the CCHA semifinals at Joe Louis Arena for the first time since Roque and his coaching staff mentored outstanding leaders during those two seasons, including Lowe s Senior CLASS First-Team and All-CCHA goaltender Jeff Jakaitis, All- CCHA defenseman Derek A. Smith and outstanding captains Steve McJannet and Barnabas Birkeland. Smith went on to make his National Hockey League debut with Ottawa during the season. In , a young Laker team got off to a start, then closed with an record during the second half of the season. The team made big strides offensively, averaging 2.82 goals per game to rank fifth in the CCHA. The Lakers were and finished 1-12 in games decided by one goal. The squad, featuring a veteran defense, also had its share of wire-to-wire thrillers and finished a much-improved 8-6 in one-goal games. The Lakers were in while competing with 10 rookies. Led by CCHA All-Rookie Team goaltender Kevin Kapalka and senior forwards Rick Schofield and Will Acton, LSSU beat Ohio State 4-0 and 3-2 to sweep a CCHA Playoff home series for the first time since The Lakers recorded their second straight CCHA First- Round Playoff home sweep by beating Alaska 4-3 and 2-0. They were overall, recording the program s most wins since They also posted boasted the best power play in league play at 20.4 percent. CCHA Games This Week Roque, who is all-time at LSSU, began his third stint at Lake Superior State as an assistant coach in Previously, he was an assistant coach for the Lakers from and also in After six seasons as an assistant at Clarkson University, he returned to LSSU in Roque also spent two and one-half seasons coaching in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League from During Roque s assistant coach tenure from , LSSU moved up in the CCHA standings after enduring three straight 12thplace finishes The Lakers improved to 11 th in and ninth in In , they placed sixth in the CCHA and began to attract notice in the national polls. Roque was a member of the LSSU coaching staff when it won the 1988 NCAA Championship, and he recruited the majority of the 1992 title team. He has played a role in all five NCAA Tournament appearances and was part of two CCHA playoff titles and two regular-season titles. After graduating from LSSU in 1987 with a bachelor s degree in management, the Killarney, Ontario, native started his coaching career as an assistant under Anzalone and stayed on to work with LSSU Hall of Fame coach Jeff Jackson. This is his 16th overall season as a coach at LSSU. Roque played for the Lakers from and totaled 56 goals and 144 career points, which was good for 19 th place on the Lakers total career points chart. Roque was a part of the first recruited class brought in by Anzalone and was also a member of the first Laker squad to advance to the NCAA Tournament in The only other former Laker who went on to become the program s head coach was Rick Comley, who recently retired as head coach of the Michigan State Spartans. He coached at LSSU from At Clarkson, Roque coached two Hobey Baker finalists and four NHL players. He was also a part of three Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) regular-season titles, four trips to the NCAA Tournament and one playoff championship. He and his wife, Julia, have two children Emma (17) and Abby (15).
