Alaska- Halfway through the campaign, Alaska is two wins behind last year s record. The Nanooks are again one of the best defensive teams in the league, having allowed just 41 goals in 18 games this season (2.28 goals-per game), behind Ferris State, Ohio State and Western Michigan. Bowling Green- The Falcons are dead even with their overall win total from last season (six). Bowling Green has one less loss (11) compared to last year, but has registered one more tie (3). Ferris State- After their best start (6-0) since the season, the Bulldogs are currently ranked in the top fifteen in the country with an record. A season ago the Bulldogs had a record, and did not get above an 18thnational ranking. Lake Superior- The Lakers top five scorers have 83 points, which is 20 points more than the top five LSSU players had at this time last year. Junior forward Domenic Monardo, sophomore forward Kyle Jean and junior defenseman Zach Trotman had 37 points at last season s mid-point. This year they have 46. Miami- The ninth-place RedHawks had three more league wins and were in third place in the CCHA standings at this time last season. Miami also finished last year in third place and has not finished worse than third place since Michigan- Senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick has started all 20 games for the Wolverines this season, earning a mark with two shutouts, a 2.48 GAA and a.917 save percentage. Through 20 team games in , Hunwick had appeared in 11, with a mark with one shutout, a 2.47 GAA and a.915 save percentage. Michigan State- The Spartans are averaging more than a goal per game better than they were at this point of last season, with 3.4 goals-per game this season (eighth nationally) compared to 2.3 per game through the first 18 games last season. Northern Michigan- Last year at this time, NMU was 9-8-3, scoring 52 goals with then-junior forward Tyler Gron leading the way with a scoring line of In the first half of 2011, the Cats are 9-7-3, scoring 50 goals with Gron again leading the way with nine goals and eight assists. Notre Dame- At last season s mid-point, freshman forward T.J. Tynan led the Fighting Irish in goals (11) and points (23). This season, Tynan leads Notre Dame in three offensive categories, assists (20), points (27) and shorthanded goals (one). Ohio State- The Buckeyes are off to their best start since with a record. It is the first time Ohio State has had at least 13 wins before the break since that squad was 17-3 at the break after opening the year Western Michigan- Junior forward Dane Walters leads the Broncos with a scoring line. Last season at this point Walters was tied for eighth on the team in scoring with six points. Sophomore forward Chase Balisy was second last season with 13 points at the break and is tied with Walters this season for the team lead with a line. CCHA- Seven former CCHA players have made their NHL debut so far this season: Carl Hagelin (Michigan/New York Rangers), Andy Miele (Miami/ Phoenix Coyotes), Jarod Palmer (Miami/Minnesota Wild), Greg Rallo (Ferris State/Florida Panthers), Ryan Thang (Notre Dame/Nashville Predators, Corey Tropp (Michigan State/Buffalo Sabres) and Derek Whitmore (Bowling Green/Buffalo Sabres). 4 Page 4 CCHA Weekly Release #11 ALASKA Head Coach: Dallas Ferguson (4th Season) Overall Record: Conference Record: BOWLING GREEN Head Coach: Chris Bergeron (2nd season) Overall Record: Conference Record: TEAM NOTES SR G Scott Greenham is tied for fourth among Division I goalies with three shutouts this season. He is with a.914 goals-against average and 2.18 save percentage, which ranks 17th-best overall. Eight of Alaska s top-10 scorers this season have already achieved or exceeded their point totals from the first half of the season, led by six-point improvements from SR F Carlo Finucci ( ) and SO F and leading scorer Colton Beck (8-6-14). JR D Kaare Odegard s With All Your Heart hospital foundation, which was created to raise funds in support of the Harry and Sally Porter Heart Center at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, has collected almost $8,000 midway through the season. Donations can be made several ways, including the overall achievements (goals, power-plays, penalty kills, etc.) of the Nanooks this season. The Falcons two leading point producers from last season are no longer on the team. Jordan Samuels-Thomas (14) transferred while David Solway (12) graduated, leaving JR F Marc Rodriguez and SO F Brett Mohler as the team s top returning scorers. Rodriguez has not played this season due to injury, while Mohler has been sidelined the last seven games due to injury. FR F Ryan Carpenter s point total (14) matches Samuels-Thomas team-leading point total from last season. Last year s team had five players with double-digit points at this point last season, while this year s squad only has two in Carpenter and SO F Cam Wojtala (13). JR G Andrew Hammond split time in the net with Nick Eno last season, and played in only 10 games. This season Hammond has started every game for the Falcons, collecting six wins compared to two wins at this point last year. Hammond s six wins match his season total from last season. Hammond s goals-against average (2.79) is lower than last season (3.08), while his current save percentage (.899) is also lower than last season (.901). FERRIS STATE Head Coach: Bob Daniels (20th season) Overall Record: Conference Record: SR F Jordie Johnston has already more than doubled his point-production from the same point last year. In , Johnston had two goals and four assists going into the holiday break. This year he has scoring line. JR F Kyle Bonis and JR F Travis Ouellette have nearly doubled their scoring totals from last year at this time. Bonis currently has 12 points on nine goals and three helpers after totalling four goals and three assists at the same point last year. Ouellette has a similar pattern - he had only one goal at the holiday break last year, and currently has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. The Bulldogs will be in uncharted territory at the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup as they have never faced their opponents RIT or Vermont. The Tigers are overall and are tied for second place in Atlantic Hockey. The Catamounts have a overall record, are in 10th place in Hockey East and play the Russian Red Stars tonight in an exhibition game before hosting the tourney. NEXT GAMES Friday, Dec. 30 at Bemidji State, 7:35 p.m. * Saturday, Dec. 31 at Bemidji State * Key Note: After a two-week break the Falcons travel to Bemidji, MN to take on the Beavers of the WCHA. LAKE SUPERIOR Head Coach: Jim Roque (7th season) Overall Record: Conference Record: Lake Superior State ends the first half of the season overall and in the CCHA. The Lakers sit in fourth place in the league with 23 points. At the halfway point of the season, the Lakers were overall and in the CCHA. Halfway through the season, the Lakers were in one-goal games. This season LSSU is in games decided by one goal. The Lakers are tied for second with Michigan State and Ohio State in power-play percentage (.200) against CCHA opponents. Last season at this time, the Lakers had a.129 power-play percentage. On the penalty kill, LSSU is in fourth place against league opponents at.875 percent. Nationally, the Lakers are sixth on the PK at.889 percent. 5 CCHA Weekly Release #11 Page 5 MIAMI MICHIGAN STATE Head Coach: Enrico Blasi (13th Season) Overall Record: Conference Record: Miami is overall at the halfway point of the season. Last year, the RedHawks sat heading into the next calendar year. Top competition has not been the problem for Miami this year, however, as the Hawks are against top-10 teams this season, beating No. 4/5 Michigan Nov. 11, No. 9/10 Denver Nov. 26 and No. 4/4 Ohio State Dec. 9. Miami was against top-10 teams in the first half of last season as well. A big difference in Miami s season this year has been the outcome of close games. Of the RedHawks 20 games this year, 17 of them have been decided by two goals or less. Miami is in those games, including 5-4 in one-goal games. However, Miami has played five overtime games and is just in extra-session contests. Of Miami s first 20 games last year, only eight were decided by two goals or less while the Hawks tied all six overtime games last year, including the first three in the first half of the season. JR F Reilly Smith, who entered as the leading returning goal-scorer in the nation, is almost on pace with his goal total. Through 20 games this year, he has 12 goals, compared to 13 goals through 20 games last season. He ranks tied for 11th nationally with 0.67 goals-per-game this year. Smith is Miami s leading point-scorer this year with 17 points. He had 26 points at this time last year, which was third on the team, while Carter Camper ( 11) led the team with 37 points. FR F Austin Czarnik was named to the U.S. National Junior Team that is competing in the 2012 World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton, Alb. NEXT GAMES Friday, Jan. 6 at Michigan State Saturday, Jan. 7 at Michigan State Key Note: After a 19-day break from game action the Red- Hawks return to the ice on Jan. 6-7 when they play at No. 14 Michigan State in a two-game CCHA series. Head Coach: Tom Anastos (1st season) Overall Record: Conference Record: MICHIGAN Head Coach: Red Berenson (28th season) Overall Record: Conference Record: TEAM NOTES Michigan wrapped up the first half of this season with points in three straight games and a record, including a mark in conference play. The Wolverines currently sit in eighth place in the CCHA with 19 points. By comparison U-M sported an record through 20 games in Michigan has earned an home record this season compared to a start at home last year. In , Michigan posted a record through 20 games, before finishing the season with a mark and six straight CCHA playoff wins to earn the program s 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. JR F Lindsay Sparks has already set new career highs in points (13), goals (5) and assists (8). JR F Lee Moffie has earned a career-high 12 assists. SO F Derek DeBlois has posted a career-best eight points and three goals. SO D Mac Bennett has eclipsed his career highs in points (13) and goals (3), and has matched his career best for assists (10). JR F Chris Brown leads Michigan with in 18 games played through the team s first 20 contests this season (he missed two due to injury). A season ago, Brown had appeared in 19 of the team s first 20 games and posted a line of SO D Jon Merrill has been named to the U.S. National Junior Team that is competing in thisyear s World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton, Alb. NEXT GAMES Thursday, Dec. 29 (Great Lakes Invitational at Detroit) vs. Boston College, 7:35 p.m. * FOX Sports Detroit Friday, Dec. 30 (Great Lakes Invitational at Detroit) vs. Michigan State/Michigan Tech, 4:05/7:35 p.m. * Key Note: The Wolverines have appeared in every GLI since 1979 and have won a total of 14 championships, including last year. NORTHERN MICHIGAN Head Coach: Walt Kyle (10th season) Overall Record: Conference Record: Michigan State has scored 25 goals in the third period this season, compared to 19 in the first and 17 in the second period. In , the Spartans had scored 18 in the first, 14 in the second, and just 10 in the final frame. Solid penalty killing has been a large part of MSU s early success. Michigan State is fourth nationally in penalty kill (and second in the CCHA behind Northern Michigan), killing off 61-of-68 attempts (89.7 percent). A year ago, the Spartans were at just 80 percent (64-of-80). The Spartans now have 10 players who have at least 10 points on the season - matching last season s total. Six players have already posted career-best offensive seasons thus far. A year ago at this time, the Spartans had five double-digit scorers. Through 18 games last season, MSU was a combined -41, with its best player a +2 (then JR F Daultan Leveille, JR F Mike Merrifield, and JR F Trevor Nill). This year, the Spartans are a combined +36, with SO F Greg Wolfe a team-best +11, and JR D Torey Krug and SO F Lee Reimer each a +10. Last season, SR G Reid Ellingson held the advantage through the midpoint of the season with a record, a 2.42 goals-against average and a.925 save percentage. This year SO G Jared Coreau has stepped up and is (.688 win percentage is 12th in the nation) with a 2.13 goals-against average and a.925 save percentage. SR F Justin Florek is currently tied with SR F Tyler Gron for the team lead with nine goals. Florek s six power-play goals are tied for third in the nation. He had six total goals at the midpoint last season. He had a scoring line of in the second half of last season. Northern Michigan has only one loss in 11 games at the Berry Events Center this year where the Cats are outscoring opponents All of Gron s nine goals have been at home. Coreau is an undefeated between the pipes at home with a 1.58 goals-against average and a.939 save percentage. NMU was at home last year at Christmas break. NMU has six home regular season games remaining. 6 Page 6 CCHA Weekly Release #11 TEAM NOTES NOTRE DAME Head Coach: Jeff Jackson (7th season) Overall Record: Conference Record: OHIO STATE Head Coach: Mark Osiecki (2nd season) Overall Record: Conference Record: Notre Dame s numbers at the half are very close to last year s totals. The Fighting Irish are overall ( last year), in the CCHA ( last year), have 27 points (29 last season), have given up an identical 55 goals and are in a tie for second place in the CCHA after sitting in first place last season. At the halfway point in , Notre Dame had played in 10 games versus nationally ranked teams and was in those games. During , the Irish have played 11 games versus ranked teams and are in those games. SO D Stephen Johns and SO F T.J. Tynan were named to the U.S. National Junior Team roster that is competing in the World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton. The two are the 14th and 15th Notre Dame players to represent their country on the National Junior Team. NEXT GAMES Saturday, Dec. 31 vs. Boston University * VERSUS/NBC Sports Network Key Note: Notre Dame and Boston University have met five times in the all-time series with the Terriers holding a advantage. The New Year s Eve game will mark Boston University s first-ever visit to Notre Dame. Last season, Ohio State was at the mid-year point, averaging 2.9 goals a game while allowing 2.6. This year, the team is , scoring 3.28 goals an outing while holding opponents to 2.11 a contest. The special teams are also off to a better start. This year the team has converted 21.8 percent of its power-play chances (19-for-87) and was 15-for-80 (18.8 percent) a season ago. The penalty kill is much improved, stopping 87.8 percent (72-for-82) compared to last year s 63-for-77 (81.8 percent). SR D Sean Duddy has nine assists this season after entering the year with nine helpers in his career. He has an assist in each of his last five games and in seven of his last nine outings. At the midway point last year Duddy had two points, including his first (and only) career goal. SO F Chris Crane has more than doubled what he had at the mid-year point last year. After recording line through his first 17 games as a freshman, he now has a team-best 18 points, including 10 goals, this season. He went on to finish last year with a line of SR F Danny Dries has one more point but three more goals this year than last year. He had an line last year en route to 27 points with 15 goals and 12 assists. This year he has a team-high 11 goals and is second with 16 points. WESTERN MICHIGAN Head Coach: Andy Murray (1st season) Overall Record: Conference Record: The Broncos have seen several improvements from the season to this season. Through 18 games, WMU has one more win and two fewer losses in their overall record. The Broncos had a conference record last season going into the winter break and this year have a record. Two glaring differences from last season s mid-point are in the squad s offensive and defensive outputs. The team was averaging 2.6 goals per game and giving up the same amount. This season, the Broncos have increased their offensive output to 3.2 goals per game and decreasing their goals against at just 2.1. JR D Matt Tennyson is having a slightly better season than he did last year through the first 18 games. He was the top-scoring defenseman at the break with 10 points on five goals and five assists. He has 11 points this season on five goals and six assists but has also seen a big jump in his plus/minus. Last year he was -1 at this point but has worked his way to a +3 rating so far this year.
