HAGELIN had an assist on Jan. 8 at Western Michigan before registering a career high four points (2-2-4) vs. WMU on Jan. 9. HAGELIN leads U-M in goals (12), assists (13) and points (25). Besides Hagelin, four other Wolverines registered a three-point game last week. Defensemen STEVE KAMPFER and BRANDON BURLON and forward LINDSAY SPARKS each had outputs on Jan. 8 at WMU. Forward Kevin Lynch posted three assists vs. the Broncos on Jan. 9. Michigan has won four straight home games to improve its Yost Ice Arena record to U-M s next three games will be played at Yost. The Wolverines have equaled their season-best winning streak of three games; U-M beat Michigan Tech on Dec. 30 and swept the Broncos last weekend. U-M also won three straight from Nov Michigan earned its second come-from-behind win of the season at Western Michigan on Jan. 8. U-M trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the second period. At LSSU on Oct. 31, U-M overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits en route to a 6-3 victory. Coach Berenson is in his 26th season behind the Michigan bench with a career record of (.670). Berenson needs four more wins to tie Len Ceglarski (Clarkson, Boston College) for sixth on the NCAA all-time coaching wins list. LAST WEEK Michigan scored a season-high four power-play goals in its 4-3 road win at Western Michigan on Jan. 8. U-M trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the second period before a series of three goals -- one in the second period and two in the third period -- put U-M FACEOFF ahead for good. The Broncos cut the deficit to a single tally with 7:24 remaining, but the U-M defense clamped down to seal the win. BRANDON BURLON got U-M on the scoreboard and LOUIE CAPORUSSO tied the game at 2-2. LINDSAY SPARKS notched the go-ahead goal, while STEVE KAMPFER had the game-winners. BRYAN HOGAN made 19 saves. U-M finished the two-game sweep of the Broncos on Jan. 9 with a convincing 6-1 home win. CHAD LANGLAIS scored 26 seconds into the game and MATT RUST tallied at 3:44 to give U-M a quick 2-0 lead. WMU trimmed the lead to 2-1 at 6:03. It remained a one-goal game until A.J. TREAIS padded the lead with a second period power-play goal. U-M s penalty killers were busy, thwarting a five-minute major and two minor penalties in the latter half of the second period. CARL HAGELIN scored two goals in the third period to finish the game win totals. DAVID WOHLBERG capped the scoring. U-S-A, ALL THE WAY Former Michigan defensemen MIKE KOMISAREK ( ) and JACK JOHNSON ( ) were named to the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team on Jan. 1. Komisarek and Johnson currently play for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings, respectively. They will be the sixth and seventh Wolverine alumni to wear the Stars and Stripes at the Olympics. The previous five U.S. representatives are Mike Knuble (2006), David Roberts (1994), Jeff Norton (1988), Willard Ikola (1956, silver medalist) and John Matchefts (1956, silver medalist). camp randall hockey classic Michigan will play the second outdoor game in program history on Feb. 6, 2010, when it visits Wisconsin for the Camp Randall Hockey Classic. The Wolverines played Michigan State in the Cold War on Oct. 6, 2001, to a 3-3 tie at Spartan Stadium in front of a world outdoor record 74,544 fans. The winning squad in a shootout will earn two points in the standings, while a shootout loss garners one point. In addition, a loss in regulation or overtime will result in no points for the losing team. One game earlier, Sparks registered a careerbest two goals vs. Michigan Tech on Dec. 30. Freshman KEVIN LYNCH has scored a goal and added four assists in his four games while playing on a line with Carl Hagelin and Matt Rust. Lynch scored his first career goal vs. RPI on Dec. 29. He set career highs for assists (3) and points (3) vs. WMU on Jan. 9. In his first 18 games of the season the right wing had one point, an assist. MATT RUST notched his fifth multi-point game of the season (1-1-2) vs. the Broncos on Jan. 9. The assist was his 11th of the season, matching his career high that he set in as a freshman and equaled in Rust is second on the U-M roster with 19 points ( ). STEVE KAMPFER notched a career-high three points on a goal and two assists at WMU on Jan. 8. His tally proved to be the second game-winning goal of his career. It was his second multi-point game of the season and the sixth of his career. Kampfer leads the Michigan defense corps in points with a line. Defenseman BRANDON BURLON tallied a career-high three points with a goal and two assists at WMU on Jan. 8. It marked his first multi-point game of the season and the sixth of his career. BEN WINNETT notched two assists to record his third career multi-point game, all of which have come this season. BRIAN LEBLER set career highs for goals (2) and points (3) in a game vs MTU. He earned his second multi-point game of the season, both of which have come in the last four games. U-M notched three goals in the third period vs. WMU on Jan. 9, marking the eighth time they have lit the lamp three times in one stanza. CHAD LANGLAIS scored his first goal of the season. The tally, which came 26 seconds after the opening faceoff, was the quickest goal to start a game this season for U-M. Michigan s six goals tied its season-high output for the third time. U-M had six tallies at Alaska-Anchorage on Oct. 10 and vs. Minnesota on Nov. 27. Michigan returns 68.5% of its offense from of 145 goals and 175 of 249 assists. Five of U-M s top seven scorers from last season are back: junior Louie Caporusso ( ) junior Carl Hagelin ( ), sophomore David Wohlberg ( ), junior defenseman Chad Langlais ( ) and junior Matt Rust ( ). Louie Caporusso was one of 10 finalists for the 2009 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. His 49 points were eighth-best nationally. U-M has had a Hobey Baker finalist in four of the last five seasons (T.J. Hensick 2005, 07; Kevin Porter 2008). POWER PLAY For the season, Michigan is 25-for-124 (20.2%), which ranks 2nd in the country. 36.8% of Michigan s overall goal total has come via the power play (25 out of 68). Michigan s power-play unit has converted at a rate of 26.9% (18-for-67) over the last 12 games, tallying a power-play goal in 11 of those contests. U-M tallied a season-high four power-play goals at WMU on Jan. 8. U-M is when it scores at least once on the power play. Sixteen players have a point on the power play. CARL HAGELIN leads U-M in power-play goals (4) and power-play points (11). MATT RUST and LOUIE CAPORUSSO each have totals. Five of the 25 goals have come from defensemen. Last season, U-M s power play was 15.8% (38 for 241), which was 35th in the country. Last season, Louie Caporusso led U-M with 10 power-play goals, which was tied for ninth in the country. BRYAN HOGAN set a career-best shutout streak of 134:30 from Nov. 21 vs. Bowling Green, through a shutout of Minnesota on Nov. 27 and into Nov. 28 vs. Wisconsin. HOGAN made 24 saves vs. Minnesota on Nov. 27 for his first shutout this season and the fourth of his career. HOGAN set a career high with 39 saves vs. the Badgers on Nov. 28. His previous high was 37 stops in a 4-3 overtime loss to Ferris State on March 1, Hogan is for his career when making 30-plus saves after posting 32 saves in a win vs. Niagara (Oct. 22) and 35 saves in a win at LSSU (Oct. 31). Last year, Michigan allowed 2.05 goals against per game, which was fourth in the country. U-M was also fourth in GAA in (2.07). Bryan Hogan set career bests in every major statistical category last season thanks to a record, 1.97 goals against average and.914 save percentage. He also had three shutouts. Of the 13 power-play goals allowed, six have come on five-on-three advantages. Versus WMU on Jan. 9, the Wolverines were perfect (6-for-6) on the penalty kill for the 12th time this season but just the first time in the last six games. MICHIGAN HOCKEY vs. AlAsKA HEAD COACH RED BERENSON A 17-year veteran of the NHL, Red Berenson (U-M, 1962) has spent 25 seasons at the helm for the Wolverines, where he owns a record. Berenson is in seventh place on college hockey s coaching wins list and is one of eight head coaches in college hockey history to accumulate 600 wins.
