Webstream: BTN Plus (BTN2Go.com) Radio: IMG Sports Network (Al Randall, PxP; Bill Trainor, Color) This weekend, the Wolverines will return to non-conference play with a Thanksgiving weekend series against Rensselaer from ECAC Hockey. Michigan opened Big Ten play last weekend with a series split against Penn State, defeating the Nittany Lions, 8-1, on Saturday night to set a school record for most goals in a Big Ten game. The Wolverines have combined for 21 goals in their last four games (5.25 goals/game), and are now tied for fourth in the nation in scoring with an average of 3.64 goals/game. After a 1-5 start to the season, RPI has righted the ship with a run in its last eight games. The Engineers earned a 2-1 win at New Hampshire on Tuesday night in their most recent action. Michigan and RPI have met 11 times, with the Engineers owning a record in those contests. RPI is one of just six Division I hockey teams to hold an all-time winning record against the Wolverines. The two teams first met in a 1954 Frozen Four semifinal contest, with the Engineers defeating Michigan, 6-4, en route to their first national championship in men s ice hockey. RPI also won the 1985 national championship. Michigan last played RPI on Dec. 29, 2009, in a Great Lakes Invitational semifinal contest. The Engineers earned a 4-3 victory in that contest. The Wolverines last victory over RPI came on Jan. 18, 1986, at Yost Ice Arena, a wild overtime affair. It marked the only time in Michigan history that the Wolverines allowed 10 goals in a game and won. With three points on the weekend (G, 2A) Andrew Copp extended his point streak to five games. He leads the team with eight points (5G, 3A) during that span. Junior forward Boo Nieves has points in five straight games (2G, 3A), and sophomore defenseman Kevin Lohan has points in four straight contests (G, 4A). On Saturday night against Penn State, Michigan recorded its fourth straight game with 40 or more shots, and fifth game overall this season with 40-plus shots on goal. 3 FRIDAY, NOV. 28 VS. RPI RPI INTERRUPTS MICHIGAN DYNASTY If not for RPI, the Wolverines hockey dynasty in the 1950s may have included six straight national championships. Michigan still holds the record with three straight national titles from , but in 1954 the Engineers pulled a monumental upset. Led by head coach Vic Heyliger, U-M entered the tournament on a roll, winners of 10 of 11 WIHL contests (10-0-1), including three wins over top contender Minnesota, the other team from the West in the Frozen Four. Yet No. 4 seed RPI defeated Michigan, 6-4, at Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs on Mar. 12, Led by All-Americans Bill MacFarland (forward) and Jim Haas (defense), Michigan nearly rallied from an early 3-0 deficit, as Mac- Farland had a hat trick and Haas added a goal in the contest. But trailing 5-4 late in the third period, RPI sealed the win with an empty net goal. The Engineers would go on to win their first national championship in hockey with a 5-4, OT win over Minnesota. Michigan went on to win national titles in 1955 and Michigan was picked to finish second in the Big Ten in the preseason coaches poll, the conference announced at Big Ten Hockey Media Day on Wednesday (Sept. 24). Minnesota was tabbed for first place. Michigan had several standout performances in an 8-4 win at UMass-Lowell on Oct. 24 Senior forward Zach Hyman recorded five points (3G, 2A), including a natural hat trick. Hyman s five-point night was the first for a Wolverine since Aaron Palushaj had five points (G, 4A) against Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 13, Michigan recorded eight or more goals in a game for the first time since Oct. 13, 2011, when the Wolverines earned a 10-3 win over St. Lawrence at Yost Ice Arena. The eight goals are the most by a Michigan team in a road game since an 8-5 win at Notre Dame on Nov. 4, Freshman forward Dylan Larkin recorded four points (G, 3A), the most points by a Michigan freshman since JT Compher had four points (2G, 2A) against Michigan State on Jan. 24, Junior forward Andrew Copp and sophomore forward JT Compher were unanimous selections on the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list. Copp earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors in , while Compher was named the 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. In his postseason debut, goaltender Zach Nagelvoort set a new school single-game record with 63 saves, breaking Robbie Moore s previous record of 61 saves set on Feb. 17, 1973 against Minnesota. Junior forward Andrew Copp will serve as team captain for the season, while senior forward Zach Hyman and sophomore forward JT Compher will serve as assistant captains. Former University of Michigan ice hockey player Wally Grant, the program s first threetime All-American and a key member of Michigan s first national championship team in 1948, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 5) at the age of 86. A 1950 U-M graduate, Grant remained involved in the Michigan hockey program long after graduation, serving as president of the Dekers Blue Line Club while also holding membership in the Graduate M Club and Michigan s Victors Club. A tenacious left winger listed at 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, Grant played four years of varsity hockey at Michigan, missing the season after serving 18 months in the United States military. Michigan was (.812) in Grant s four seasons at Michigan. He scored 63 goals and added 83 assists for 146 points. 5 FRIDAY, NOV. 28 VS. RPI they had ever witnessed. When play resumed, Michigan held Denver to a single shot on goal for the remaining 22:16 of the game while scoring five goals to take the win and advance to the second round of the tournament. Before the team arrived home in Ann Arbor, calls and s were pouring into the ice hockey office inquiring what coach Berenson told his players in that huddle. Berenson is the fourth former Michigan ice hockey captain to coach the Wolverines program, accepting the position from athletic director Don Canham in May A threeyear U-M varsity letterwinner under head coach Al Renfrew, Berenson is one of the top players in Wolverine ice hockey history, earning All-America and Michigan Most Valuable Player honors in both his junior and senior seasons (1961, 62). As a senior, Berenson led the Wolverines to a second-place finish in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) and third place at the NCAA National Championships. Berenson led the WCHA in scoring with 41 points (24 goals, 17 assists) in 18 games, and was named the league s MVP. Berenson completed his Wolverine career by scoring a season record 70 points (43 goals and 27 assists) in just 28 games. His 43 goals and nine hat tricks in his last season still stand as Michigan records. (Berenson scored his 43 goals in 28 games, but shares the record with Dave Debol who scored 43 goals in his All-American season while playing 45 games.) Following his final Michigan contest in the 1962 NCAA Consolation Game win vs. St. Lawrence, Berenson was driven from Utica, N.Y., to Boston where he played for the Montreal Canadiens at the Boston Garden the next night. He played in nine games for Montreal in the last month of the season, becoming the first collegiate player to step immediately into the National Hockey League. Berenson holds two degrees from the University of Michigan, his bachelor s degree from the School of Business Administration in 1962 and a Master of Business Administration degree in He returned to Ann Arbor from Montreal one day after the Canadiens 1965 Stanley Cup championship parade to begin graduate classes. The commitment to education Berenson illustrated over three decades ago remains an integral part of the Wolverine ice hockey program as Michigan s graduation rate has ranked near the top of collegiate ice hockey since Berenson played in the NHL for 17 years as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues. He accumulated 261 goals and 397 assists in 987 games -- the most by any Michigan alumnus in the NHL -- leaving an indelible mark on league history. Berenson scored at least 20 goals in seven NHL seasons. HEAD COACH RED BERENSON On Nov. 7, 1968, while playing for the St. Louis Blues in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Berenson scored six goals, including four over a nine-minute span. The six-goal effort was one shy of the all-time NHL record, and marked the first time since 1944 that an individual had scored six goals in an NHL game. It is a feat that has been accomplished only once since. In that game, Berenson also set the NHL records for most goals in a road game and most goals in a period (four), records which stand today. Only eight other NHL players, including the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Bryan Trottier, have scored four goals in a period. Berenson played in the original and legendary eight-game Canada Cup series for Team Canada vs. the Soviet Union in 1972 as well as the old-timers rematch of the Canada Cup in In the fall of 2005 he, along with the entire 1972 Team Canada roster, was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Following his retirement as a player after the season, Berenson remained in St. Louis as a member of the Blues coaching staff. After serving as an assistant coach for a year and a half, he took over as head coach with 56 games remaining in the season and posted a record.
