Radio: IMG Sports Network (Al Randall, PxP; Andrew Merrick, Color) TV: BTN Plus - Michigan concludes a two-game home series with Wisconsin, and looking to rebound after falling 7-4 last night to the Badgers. Over the last 12 meetings between the programs, Michigans holds an edge, with two shootout wins over that span. Tonight s game will feature a food drive, where fans are encouraged to bring in canned food items to benefit Food Gatherer s Food Bank of Ann Arbor. Fans who bring in at least two canned food items will receive a foam puck to throw onto the ice for a chance to win prizes. THE SERIES Michigan and Wisconsin meet for the 137th time in program history. The two teams first met in Jan. 1923, as Michigan hosted Wisconsin for the first two varsity games in Wolverine program history. Michigan swept that series, 2-1 (2 OT), 1-0, and went on to split the series in Wisconsin the next weekend. Prior to last night s triumph by the Badgers, the last time Wisconsin had won at Yost Arena was Nov. 26, 2005 (3-2). Last season, U-M scored 20 goals over the four contests, going against the Badgers. The last meeting at Yost in the was a wild 6-6 tie that ended with a Wolverines shootout win. Last night Michigan jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but five goals in the second period by Wisconsin proved to be too much of a comeback to overcome for the Wolverines, despite a strong third period of play that saw a short-handed goal by Cutler Martin.

Head coach Red Berenson returns for his 33rd season behind the bench this season. Berenson was named 2016 Big Ten Coach of the Year, leading Michigan to a record 36th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, and the 23rd NCAA bid in his tenure at Michigan. Michigan is (.661) in the Berenson era, including the 1996 and 1998 NCAA national championships. Michigan will be led by its six-man senior class, the largest group of true seniors for U-M Hockey since the season. This group includes forwards Evan Allen, Alex Kile, and Max Shuart, defensemen Nolan De Jong and Kevin Lohan, and goaltender Zach Nagelvoort. Up front, Alex Kile is Michigan s most experienced scorer, with 66 points (33G, 33A) in 102 games played. In , Kile finished fifth on the team in scoring with a career-best 34 points (16G, 18A) in 38 games, including five power play goals. He recorded his first career hat trick last season in a 6-2 win at Minnesota on Feb. 25. Michigan also returns five forwards that topped 15 points last season, including sophomore Cooper Marody (10G, 14A), junior Tony Calderone (11G, 9A), junior Dexter Dancs (7G, 10A), sophomore Brendan Warren (5G, 12A), and senior Max Shuart (6G, 9A). Defenseman Nolan De Jong is coming off his best season in a Michigan uniform and will lead a blue line corps that returns six experienced players. De Jong played in all 38 games, notching a career best 11 assists and leading all Big Ten defensemen with a plus-22 rating. Joining De Jong (90 career games played) on defense are five players who have all seen regular time on the blue line during their Michigan careers. Junior Cutler Martin (67 GP), senior Kevin Lohan (55 GP), sophomore Nicholas Boka (38 GP), sophomore Joe Cecconi (38 GP), and junior Sam Piazza (26 GP) give Michigan a lot of depth on defense heading into the season. In net, senior goaltender Zach Nagelvoort has been a starter in parts of each of his three seasons at Michigan. Nagelvoort enters the season with a career record of , a 2.49 GAA and.916 Save percentage in 57 games played. Michigan adds 11 freshmen into the fold in , the largest incoming freshman class for U-M Hockey since the season. Six freshman forwards will join Michigan, including Will Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), Steven Merl (Coral Springs, Fla.), Nick Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.), James Sanchez (Northbrook, Ill.), Jake Slaker (San Diego, Calif.), and Adam Winborg (Stockholm, Sweden). Three freshman defensemen join a talented defensive corps, as Michigan adds Griffin Luce (Williamsville, N.Y.), Luke Martin (St. Louis, Mo.) and Christian Meike (Arlington, Va.). Luce s grandfather, Don Luce, was a longtime NHLer who was a teammate of Red Berenson with the Detroit Red Wings during the season. Martin, considered one of the top defensive prospects for the 2017 NHL Draft, was invited to USA Hockey s 2016 National Junior Evaluation Camp, held in Plymouth, Mich. this summer. Martin made the final evaluation camp roster, and will likely participate in the team s pre-tournament camp in December. Two freshmen goaltenders will compete with Nagelvoort and Chad Catt for the starting spot in net, as Michigan welcomes Jack LaFontaine (Mississauga, Ontario) and Hayden Lavigne (Brampton, Ontario). LaFontaine was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round (75th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and is the first incoming freshman goalie to be selected in the NHL Draft since Josh Blackburn (1998). Lavigne is coming off his best year for the Bloomington Thunder of the United States Hockey League, finishing the season with a record, 2.26 goals-against average and.914 save percentage.

4 A proven winner at the collegiate and professional levels as both a player and coach, Gordon Red Berenson is in his 33rd season behind the bench at Michigan in Berenson was named 2016 Big Ten Coach of the Year, leading Michigan to a record 36th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, and the 23rd NCAA bid in his tenure at Michigan. Michigan is (.659) in the Berenson era, including the 1996 and 1998 NCAA national championships -- the eighth and ninth in school history. His accomplishments behind the bench at Michigan put him among the greatest coaches in college hockey history. When he took over a struggling program in 1984, his goal was to return Michigan to its glorious success of the 1950s. Introduced by then-athletic director Don Canham on May 17, 1984, in the M Club Room at the University of Michigan Golf Course, a 44-year-old Berenson first hoped to restore the image of the hockey team. I d like to improve the image of the Michigan hockey team on campus and with the alumni, Berenson said at his opening press conference. I think that now people will be thinking more highly about the program. Berenson has more than banked on his promise, building Michigan into a powerhouse that has spanned over three decades. Under Berenson, the Wolverines have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 23 of the past 26 season His run of 22 consecutive appearances from marks the longest streak ever in college hockey. Over that time, Michigan reached the NCAA Frozen Four 11 times: back-to-back appearances in 1992 and 1993; four consecutive appearances in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998; three consecutive showings between , 2008 and Besides 1996 and 1998 U-M also reached the national title game in 2011, losing 3-2 in overtime to Minnesota-Duluth. On six occasions the Maize and Blue has swept the CCHA regular season and postseason titles, last doing so in U-M s most improbable CCHA Tournament crown came in After placing seventh in the regular season, U-M won six straight CCHA playoff games, including two at Michigan State and a semifinal upset of top-seeded Miami, to receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. U-M s last regular season crown was in , when it won its final six games to overtake Notre Dame. Berenson, who has fashioned an record (.659) in 33 seasons with the Wolverines, is the fourth collegiate ice hockey coach to record 800 career victories, reaching the milestone with a 7-5 win vs. Minnesota on Jan. 10, Berenson s 836 victories place him fourth on the NCAA ice hockey coaches all-time win list. He stood behind the U-M bench for the 1,000th time of his career on Feb. 22, 2008 at Michigan State. In 2008, Berenson earned the American Hockey Coaches Association s Spencer Penrose Award as the National Coach of the Year for the first time in his tenure at Michigan. The U-M squad went , reached the NCAA Frozen Four, won the CCHA regular season and tournament championships and boasted the Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner, Kevin Porter. Berenson also earned the CCHA s Coach of the Year laurel for the second time of his career (1994). In the 17 years of the College Hockey Showcase -- a Thanksgiving tournament that pits U-M and Michigan State versus Minnesota and Wisconsin -- the Maize and Blue has the highest win total (20) and the highest winning percentage (.603, ) record against the Golden Gophers and Badgers. Since the season -- when U-M s 22-year streak of NCAA Tournament appearances started -- Berenson has guided the Wolverines to an impressive (.715) record against non-conference, regular-season opponents. Adding to the legend of Berenson s tenure with the Michigan program is an incident from the 1999 East Regional in Worcester, Mass. In the first tournament game, U-M trailed the University of Denver 3-0 at the 17:44 mark of the second period. Berenson called a timeout which some say changed that game more than any other timeout they had ever witnessed. When play resumed, Michigan held Denver to a single shot on goal for the remaining 22:16 of the game while scoring five goals to take the win and advance to the second round of the tournament. Before the team arrived home in Ann Arbor, calls and s were pouring into the ice hockey office inquiring what coach Berenson told his players in that huddle. Berenson is the fourth former Michigan ice hockey captain to coach the Wolverines program, accepting the position from athletic director Don Canham in May A threeyear U-M varsity letterwinner under head coach Al Renfrew, Berenson is one of the top players in Wolverine ice hockey history, earning All-America and Michigan Most Valuable Player honors in both his junior and senior seasons (1961, 62). As a senior, Berenson led the Wolverines to a second-place finish in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) and third place at the NCAA National Championships. Berenson led the WCHA in scoring with 41 points (24 goals, 17 assists) in 18 games, and was named the league s MVP. Berenson completed his Wolverine career by scoring a season record 70 points (43 goals and 27 assists) in just 28 games. His 43 goals and nine hat tricks in his last season still stand as Michigan records. (Berenson scored his 43 goals in 28 games, but shares the record with Dave Debol who scored 43 goals in his All-American season while playing 45 games.) Following his final Michigan contest in the 1962 NCAA Consolation Game win vs. St. Lawrence, Berenson was driven from Utica, New York, to Boston where he played for the Montreal Canadiens at the Boston Garden the next night. He played in nine games for Montreal in the last month of the season, becoming the first collegiate player to step immediately into the National Hockey League. Berenson holds two degrees from the University of Michigan, his bachelor s degree from the School of Business Administration in 1962 and a Master of Business Administration degree in He returned to Ann Arbor from Montreal one day after the Canadiens 1965 Stanley Cup championship parade to begin graduate classes. The commitment to education Berenson illustrated over three decades ago remains an integral part of the Wolverine Head Coach Red Berenson ice hockey program as Michigan s graduation rate has ranked near the top of collegiate ice hockey since Berenson played in the NHL for 17 years as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues. He accumulated 261 goals and 397 assists in 987 games -- the most by any Michigan alumnus in the NHL -- leaving an indelible mark on league history. Berenson scored at least 20 goals in seven NHL seasons. On Nov. 7, 1968, while playing for the St. Louis Blues in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Berenson scored six goals, including four over a nine-minute span. The six-goal effort was one shy of the all-time NHL record, and marked the first time since 1944 that an individual had scored six goals in an NHL game. It is a feat that has been accomplished only once since. In that game, Berenson also set the NHL records for most goals in a road game and most goals in a period (four), records which stand today. Only eight other NHL players, including the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Bryan Trottier, have scored four goals in a period. Berenson played in the original and legendary eight-game Canada Cup series for Team Canada vs. the Soviet Union in 1972 as well as the old-timers rematch of the Canada Cup in In the fall of 2005 he, along with the entire 1972 Team Canada roster, was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. In August 1982, Berenson joined former St. Louis Blues coach Scotty Bowman on the Buffalo Sabres staff, serving as an assistant under Bowman until accepting the head coaching job at Michigan in Berenson has not lost touch with the NHL, presenting the 1989 Coach of the Year award to Pat Burns, then coach of the Montreal Canadiens, at the NHL Awards Banquet.
