REDHAWKS ( OVERALL; CCHA, 1st) REDHAWKS BACK TO NO.1: After winning both games of last weekend s series against Alaska, combined with a Michigan loss and tie, the RedHawks have overtaken the Wolverines for the No. 1 ranking in both men s hockey polls. This is the eighth week this season that Miami has owned the top spot. With its record of , Miami earned 510 points and all 34 first-place votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, and 999 points and 49-of-50 first-place votes in the USCHO/CSTV poll. Miami also owns the top spot in the PairWise Rankings, a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I Men s Hockey Tournament. A BATTLE FOR THE AGES: The No. 1 ranked RedHawks will welcome the current No. 2 team in the nation, Michigan, to Steve Cady Arena February 8-9 for an interconference matchup of historic proportions. This will mark the first time in the school s history that it will face off against the second ranked team while being ranked No. 1. Along with playing for the nation s top rank, four valuable CCHA points are up for grabs. Miami currently has a three-point edge over the Wolverines for first-place in the conference standings, though, Michigan has played two fewer games than MU this season. THAT S A LOT OF WINS: With last Friday s victory over the Nanooks, the current Miami senior class won its 89th game, becoming the winningest class in school history, passing the 2006 graduating class, which had 88 victories. ZATKOFF SETS SCHOOL RECORD: Junior goaltender JEFF ZATKOFF (G, Chesterfield, MI) held opponents without a goal for 216:02, setting a new record for netminders at Miami. Zatkoff held Lake Superior State without a goal in MU s 5-0 victory over the Lakers, then followed that performance up with a 2-0, blanking of Alaska. This was the first time in Zatkoff s career that he pitched back-to-back shutouts, and he now has six shutouts during his time at Miami. 20-SOMETHINGS: Junior forward JUSTIN MERCIER (F, Erie, PA) scored his 20th goal of the year last Saturday to make Miami the only team in the country with two 20-goal scorers (Ryan Jones 22 goals). Fifty-seven NCAA Division I teams do not have a single 20-goal scorer. Mercier is behind only senior captain RYAN JONES (F, Chatham, ONT) and Michigan s Kevin Porter, each with 22 goals, for the most goals in Division I hockey.
2 Week of Jan. 28, MORE 20-SOMETHINGS: With his 13th goal of the year last Saturday night, freshman forward TOMMY WINGELS (F, Wilmette, IL) became the ninth RedHawk to record 20 points this season. Miami boasts the most 20-point scorers for any team in the nation. Of the 59 D-I teams, 16 teams do not roster a player with 20 points. WE RE GOING STREAKING!: After winning its seventh consecutive game, the Red and White are tied with North Dakota for the nation s longest winning streak. Only Michigan State has a longer unbeaten streak (eight games, 5-0-3) than Miami. PRODUCTIVE ON THE PK: With junior forward JUSTIN MER- CIER scoring while Miami was down a man last Saturday, the RedHawks have now scored seven shorthanded tallies on the year, tying the team with four others for the third most in the nation. Along with turning offensive while on the penalty kill, MU has shutdown the opponent on 141-of-156 (90.4 percent) man-advantage opportunities, placing the team third in the country. WHAT DOESN T HE LEAD?: Nationally, junior goaltender JEFF ZATKOFF ranks at the top of every goaltending category, including goals-against average (1.50), saves percentage (tied with UM s Billy Sauer,.937) and winning percentage (.870). Zatkoff and Sauer are the only two netminders in Division I hockey with 20 victories this season. Should Zatkoff continue the pace he s on, he would break the school s alltime records for goals-against average (CHARLIE EFFINGER ) and saves-percentage (JEFF ZATKOFF -.923) He needs just two more victories this season to tie Richard Schulmistra s record for the most wins by a Miami netminder in a single season (22). ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END: Freshman forward CARTER CAMPER s point streak ended at 10 games in Friday s 2-0 win at Alaska. He came back strong in Saturday s contest though, scoring twice and assisting on another goal. He has registered 19 points in his last 12 games and, with overall, is second in the nation in rookie points. COACH S WINNING WAYS: Since taking the helm of Miami hockey nine years ago, head coach ENRICO BLASI has won games unlike any other coach in Miami s 30-year history. Of the 507 wins in the team s history, Blasi has been on the bench for 179 of them, just over 35 percent of the time. When it comes to CCHA games, MU has won 328 all-time leaguecontests, with Blasi guiding Miami to victory in 130 of those games. NCAA ALL-TIME RANKINGS: If Miami continues its pace for scoring defense and scoring margin, it would rank amongst the NCAA s top-10, all-time, in each category. The RedHawks boast a scoring margin, which would place the team in fifth-place all-time on the Division I list. Ohio State s 1970 squad holds the record with a differential. Miami gives up an average of 1.54 goals per game, currently the sixthlowest in D-1 history. MU currently leads the nation in both categories. A WINNING PERSONALITY: Senior captain RYAN JONES leads the country in game-winning goals, tallying seven this season. Jones is Miami s all-time leader for game-winners (21), and has given himself a 10-goal cushion between first and second place. Jones needs just two more game-winners this season to tie Brett Sterling for the most GWG (23) in NCAA history. Should he score three more, Jones would tie the Division I record for the most game-winners in one season, with 10. HOBEY BAKER FAN BALLOTING UPDATE: Three Miami players have been nominated to the Hobey Baker Award ballot, an award given to the nation s best collegiate hockey player. Here s a breakdown of how Miami s nominees have fared through Tuesday night: RYAN JONES - 50,131 votes percent JEFF ZATKOFF - 14,246 votes... 7 percent JUSTIN MERCIER - 7, percent Fan balloting runs now through March 9. To cast votes for the three Miamians on the ballot, please go to com/voting. HISTORICALLY VICTORIOUS: With a record of 25-3, coach ENRICO BLASI s team needs just two more wins this season to tie the school s record for most wins in a single season. The accomplisment has been achieved twice; once in (the team included Blasi as a player) and again in The Blasi-led team finished the season with 26 victories, the most wins he has earned in a season as the team s head coach. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: By netting his 22nd goal of the season in the third period of last Saturday s victory over Alaska, senior captain RYAN JONES caught Michigan s Kevin Porter for the both the CCHA and national lead in goals scored. The goal was Jones 81st for his career at Miami, moving him past Vern Sketchley for second place on the school s all-time goal scoring list. Should he win the conference scoring title, Jones would be the first Miamian since Derek Edwardson in to be named the league s top goal scorer.
