The Northern Michigan University hockey team will stay in the WCHA when they go home-and-home with the Michigan Tech Huskies. Friday the puck will drop in Houghton before moving the action to Marquette on Saturday. LIFETIME SERIES... The Wildcats hold the overall edge against the Huskies ( ). The Cats are in Marquette, in Houghton and on neutral ice. NMU is in the past eight games against MTU. Last year NMU took care of MTU in the two games as the Cats won in Marquette 5-1 and then in Houghton the next night 2-1 (10/21-22/ 05). RECENT NORTHERN MICHIGAN GAMES... Northern Michigan 3 vs. Wisconsin 3 (OT) - Oct. 7, 2006 (Green Bay, Wis.) NMU jumped on to a 2-0 lead with two second period goals. Zach Tarkir opened up the scoring with a goal at 2:54 then Mike Santorelli scored at 8:50. The Badgers cut the lead in half with a power-play goal at 13:18 (Jake Dowell), Dusty Collins then gave the Cats the 3-1 lead with a goal at 6:50 of the third period. The Badgers added a powerplay and short-handed goal for the tie. Bill Zaniboni had 29 saves. Northern Michigan 0-1-1, CCHA Northern Michigan 2 vs. Michigan 3 - March 18, 2006 (CCHA Consolation Game) Matt Ciancio scored his first goal of the season at 5:30 of the first period as NMU jumped ahead of the Wolverines. UM would tie the game with a goal at 10:54 of the opening period and then take the 2-1 lead with a goal at 16:01 of the second 1 at/vs. Michigan Tech 0-0-0, WCHA Oct. 13, :07 p.m. Houghton, Mich. Berry Events Center (3,902) SERIES INFORMATION Overall: In Marquette: In Houghton: Neutral: Meetings: None RADIO Northern Star Broadcasting (93.1FM WIMK and 94.1 FM WUPK) Play-by-Play: John Focke Updated Stats: Northern Michigan 0 vs. Wisconsin 3 - Oct. 6, 2006 (Green Bay, Wis.) The defending national champions scored a goal in the second period (Michael Davies) and two in the third (Davis Drewiske and Davies) for the win. UW had 13 more shots than the Wildcats on the night (36-23). Bill Zaniboni had 33 saves on the night. Northern Michigan 5 vs. University of Toronto 2 - Sept. 30, 2006 The Wildcats opened the season with an exhibition game against the University of Toronto. Mike Santorelli opened up the scoring with a goal at 12:35 of the first period. Darin Olver added another goal later in the period (18:50). Andrew Sarauer added a power-play goal at 6:51 of the second frame to give the Cats the 3-0 lead. UT added a marker at 10:35 for a 3-1 game. Santorelli added his second marker of the game for the 4-1 lead at 7:45 of the third period. UT made it 4-2 before Nick Sirota scored the final goal of the game at 13:36.

2 Head Coach Walt Kyle Walt Kyle is in his fifth season in Marquette at Northern Michigan University as he was named the second head hockey coach in Northern Michigan University history on June 13, He is at the helm of the Wildcats. Kyle picked up his first collegiate win behind the Wildcat bench with a 4-1 win at Michigan Tech on the night of Oct. 5, He has led the Cats to Joe Louis Arena and the CCHA Championships in each of his four seasons. Kyle was the U.S. National Junior Team Coach at the 2006 World Junior Championship in Vancouver, B.C. He led the U.S. to a fourthplace finish. For two years ( ) Kyle was an assistant coach with the National Hockey League s New York Rangers under coach Ron Lowe. Glen Sather, the Rangers general manager who was the previous GM in Edmonton, brought Kyle to New York. Kyle was the coach of the American Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs, the Oilers top affiliate club, from Kyle s other NHL experience came with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim ( ) under Ron Wilson. He has coached NHL stars such as Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. His other professional coaching positions were with the AHL s Baltimore Bandits ( ), the International Hockey League s San Diego Gulls ( ) and the Western Hockey League s Seattle Thunderbirds ( ). Kyle was a two-time NMU letterman after transferring from Boston College. He captained the 1980 and 81 Wildcat squads that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. Kyle appeared in 85 games for the Cats and scored 31 goals, with 59 assists for 90 points. Following graduation, he became a graduate assistant coach under Comley and was promoted to an assistant coach in 1982, a position he held until Kyle was the program s top assistant in 1991 when Northern won the NCAA I national title. He graduated from NMU in 1981 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. Kyle attended graduate school at Northern where he took a graduate level curriculum in exercise physiology. An active participant in USA Hockey, Kyle was an assistant coach under Lou Vairo for Team USA, which finished fourth at the 2001 World Championships in Germany, and under Wilson for the 1994 squad that competed in Milan, Italy. He also was a coach with the 1992 and 93 U.S. Junior National Teams, the former which won the bronze medal the highest finish ever by an American squad, under the older format, and one of only three U.S. teams to ever medal at the World Championships. He was the assistant coach of the national junior squad under Kevin Constantine in Kyle was named to the USA Hockey s International Council in June of In his position on the council, Kyle will be asked to provide administrative direction and advise the organization with respect to its international activities, including player evaluation and selection, training and participation in International Ice Hockey Federation-sanctioned events such as World Championships for men s and women s teams at all age levels, and the Olympic Winter Games. Kyle, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, and his wife, Ann, have four children: two daughters, Quinn and Erin; and two sons, Evan and Walt. period. Northern Michigan 2 vs. Miami 5 - March 17, 2006 (CCHA Semifinals) NMU scored two first-period goals to take the quick 2-0 over the RedHawks. Mike Santorelli scored at 14:14 (Pat Bateman and Nathan Oystrick) to get the Cats on the board. Bateman then scored the second goal at 16:56, unassisted. Miami would score three in the second period and two in the third for the win. NMU did have the shot advantage at National Polls... Northern Michigan 3 vs. Nebraska- Omaha 2 - March 11, 2006 (CCHA Second Round) The Wildcats wrapped up the series with a three-goal outburst in the second period and held on for the win. The second period has been the most productive for the Cats this season. Goals were scored by Pat Bateman (1:41) and Andrew Contois. Contois scored twice in the period at 5:22 and a short-handed marker at 12:03. UNO scored twice in the final frame on two power-play goals. Bill Zaniboni turned away 28 shots. Matt Siddall gave the Cats the 1-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season at 4:06 of the period. The Mavericks tied the game with a power-play goal by Bill Thomas (16:22). Dirk Southern scored the final goal of the period which gave the Cats the lead for good (2-1) at 17:57. Rob Lehtinen scored twice for the final margin. He scored at 8:40 of the second period and at 7:00 of the third period. Bill Zaniboni had 25 saves. Northern Michigan 4 vs. Ohio State 2 - Feb. 25, 2006 Ohio State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in the first period. But the Cats would answer with three goals in the middle frame. Jamie Milam scored first with a power-play goal at 13:55. Nick Sirota (14:23) and Dusty Collins (19:49) added goals in the period. Collins goal was with an extra attacker. Darin Olver (19:23) added an empty-net goal in the third period. Bill Zaniboni turned away 19 of OSU s 21 shots. NORTHERN MICHIGAN NOTES... A Look At The Huskies... The Huskies have only played an exhibition game against Lakehead in its only action of the season. MTU defeated Lakehead 6-1. Friday s game is the regular season opener for MTU. Tyler Shelast leads the Huskies with four career goals against NMU. Lars Helminen has three career goals. Sophomore goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak was in He had a 3.68 goalsagainst average with a.902 save-percentage. Record Crowds... For the first time in Berry Events Center history back-to-back capacity crowds of 4,260 were on hand against Michigan (11/11-12/05). The season saw capacity crowds three times as the other time was against Michigan Tech (10/21/05). 2

The first game with over 4,000 fans was against Lake Superior State (3/3/01) as 4,039 people went through the gates. The second time was 4,052 against Notre Dame (1/24/04). Three of the top six crowds were during the season against Michigan Tech as 4,216 (2/17/05) people went through the gates, 4,197 were at Michigan Tech (11/ 6/04) and 4,163 saw the Michigan State game (10/23/04). NHL Picks... NMU has nine NHL draft picks on the roster, the second-highest among CCHA teams. The Cats who have been drafted: Matt Butcher (VAN), Dusty Collins (T.B.), Spencer Dillon (FLA), TJ Miller (N.J.), Darin Olver (NYR), Mike Santorelli (NSH), Andrew Sarauer (VAN), Matt Siddall (ATL) and Zack Tarkir (N.J.). Walt Kyle has guided the Wildcats to Joe Louis Arena and the CCHA Championships in each of his four seasons behind the bench. He has guided the Cats to 20 or more wins each season and needs 13 wins to reach 100 in his career. Olver... Darin Olver could become only the second player in NMU history to lead the Cats in scoring all four years. He had 32 points as a freshman, 43 as a sophomore and 35 last year as a junior. Gary Emmons was the first Cat to accomplished this in his NMU career. He played for NMU from Olver has nine career game-winning goals, just four short of the NMU record held by Steve Bozek and Roger Trudeau. Open The Season... NMU was shutout in its opening game of the season for the second time in school history against Wisconsin. The Cats lost 3-0 to the Badgers on Friday night in Green Bay. Wis. The other time was to St. Louis (0-5) to open up the season. At The Resch... The Wildcats played its first two games ever at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. The team snapped its five-game skid against the Badgers with the 3-3 tie on Saturday. Zaniboni... Bill Zaniboni blocked 62-of-68 shots against the Badgers (.911). First... Matt Butcher notched his first career point on Saturday against Wisconsin with an assist on Zach Tarkir s goal at 2:54 of the second period. Blake Cosgrove assisted on Mike Santorelli s goal at 8:50 of the second period for his first career point. Power Play... NMU was 0-11 on the power play against UW last week.

Cosgrove after not seeing any action during the season has one point after one game...he appeared in 14 games during the season NMU will have one or two more neutral ice games next week in Omaha, Neb. Dusty Collins has played in 98 games for the Cats Next Week... The NMU hockey team will be at the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Tournament. The Cats face UMass-Lowell in the opening game on Friday. NMU will either face Nebraska-Omaha or Niagara on Saturday. Cluster Standings... Under the CCHA s rivalry pairing cluster scheduling format, NMU, whose rivalry partner is Lake Superior State, is joining Ohio State and Miami for the campaign. At the end of the season, the CCHA will crown a Perani Cup champion as well as honor individual winners from each school.
