The Northern Michigan University hockey team will drop the puck for real this weekend. NMU is hosting WCHA member St. Cloud State University for two games. LIFETIME SERIES... The Huskies lead the overall series with a record. NMU is 1-6 in the past seven games. But there is a gap as the two teams met last year in St. Cloud as the Huskies won the first night (2-1) and the Cats won on Saturday night (4-2). Before last year the last time the two met was in 1997 when both were members of the WCHA. RECENT NORTHERN MICHIGAN GAMES... Northern Michigan 9 vs. York University 2 - Oct. 8, 2005 The Lions were called for 23 penalties and 92 penalty minutes. The Cats answered by going 5-13 on the power play.andrew Contois scored the first goal of the game 21 seconds into the contest. Nick Sirota added a marker a little over a minute later at 1:22. NMU added three goals in the second period and four in the third for the win. Bill Zaniboni had 22 saves between the pipes for the Cats. Dirk Southern scored 31 seconds into the game then Zach Tarkir added a marker later in the period. The third period saw Mike Santorelli and Southern add his second goal of the game. Derek Janzen had 23 saves on the night. NMU had 32 shots on the night. Northern Michigan 3 vs. Alaska Fairbanks 6 - March 17, 2005 (CCHA Super Six - Quarterfinals) It was all tied up after 20 minutes of play at two-all. The Nanooks scored four goals over the final 40 minutes of play to win the game and end the Cats season. Rob Lehtinen, Tim Hartung and Nathan Oystrick all scored for NMU. 1

2 Head Coach W alt Kyle W alt Kyle is in his fourth season in Marquette at Northern Michigan University as he was named the second head hockey coach in Northern Michigan University history on June 13, He is at the helm of the Wildcats. Kyle picked up his first collegiate win behind the Wildcat bench with a 4-1 win at Michigan Tech on the night of Oct. 5, Kyle will be behind the bench as the U.S. National Junior Team Coach at the W orld Junior Championship in Vancouver, B.C. in late December and early January. For two years ( ) Kyle was an assistant coach with the National Hockey League s New York Rangers under coach Ron Lowe. Glen Sather, the Rangers general manager who was the previous GM in Edmonton, brought Kyle to New York. Kyle was the coach of the American Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs, the Oilers top affiliate club, from Kyle s other NHL experience came with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim ( ) under Ron Wilson. He has coached NHL stars such as Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. His other professional coaching positions were with the A H L s Baltimore Bandits ( ), the International Hockey League s San Diego Gulls ( ) and the W estern Hockey League s Seattle Thunderbirds ( ). Kyle was a two-time NMU letterman after transferring from Boston College. He captained the 1980 and 81 Wildcat squads that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. Kyle appeared in 85 games for the Cats and scored 31 goals, with 59 assists for 90 points. Following graduation, he became a graduate assistant coach under Comley and was promoted to an assistant coach in 1982, a position he held until Kyle was the program s top assistant in 1991 when Northern won the NCAA I national title. He graduated from NMU in 1981 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. Kyle attended graduate school at Northern where he took a graduate level curriculum in exercise physiology. An active participant in USA Hockey, Kyle was an assistant coach under Lou Vairo for Team USA, which finished fourth at the 2001 W orld Championships in Germany, and under W ilson for the 1994 squad that competed in Milan, Italy. He also was a coach with the 1992 and 93 U.S. Junior National Teams, the former which won the bronze medal the highest finish ever by an American squad, under the older format, and one of only three U.S. teams to ever medal at the W orld Championships. He was the assistant coach of the national junior squad under Kevin Constantine in Kyle was named to the USA Hockey s International Council in June of In his position on the council, Kyle will be asked to provide administrative direction and advise the organization with respect to its international activities, including player evaluation and selection, training and participation in International Ice Hockey Federation-sanctioned events such as W orld Championships for men s and women s teams at all age levels, and the Olympic Winter Games. Kyle, a native of W aterloo, Iowa, and his wife, Ann, have four children: two daughters, Quinn and Erin; and two sons, Evan and W alt. W estern Michigan 1 at Northern Michigan 4 - March 13, 2005 Faced with a game three the loser s season would be over. NMU came out and struck for two first period goals by Kevin Gardner (shorthanded) and Tim Hartung. Pat Bateman s goal at 4:49 of the second period gave the Cats the 3-1 lead. The Broncos added a goal at 15:11 of the second frame, then Gardner scored his second goal of the night at 17:21 of the third period for the final margin. Gardner s both goals were unassisted. The Cats had 21 shots on goal for the night as WMU had 30. W estern Michigan 2 at Northern Michigan 4 - March 12, 2005 The W estern Michigan University Broncos held the 2-0 lead after two periods of play. But the Cats were not dead as the home team scored three goals within the first six-and-ahalf minutes of the final frame. Andrew Contois scored a shorthanded goal at 2:08 of the third period which was followed by Jamie Milam s power-play goal at 5:20 and Dirk National Polls... W estern Michigan 2 at Northern Michigan 1 - March 11, 2005 The opening game of the 2005 CCHA Playoffs saw the Cats take the early 1-0 lead on Rob Lehtinen s goal at 12:33 of the first period. The Broncos scored a goal in the final minute of the first period (19:11) and added the game-winner at 4:21 of the second period. Northern Michigan 3 at Lake Superior 2 - March 5, 2005 NMU and LSSU traded goals in the first period as Kevin Gardner scored the Cats marker at 5:37 of the period. NMU did hold the lead after two periods of play as Jamie Milam and Pat Bateman scored goals for the Cats. The Lakers added a goal in the second period for the final margin. Tuomas Tarkki had 33 saves on the night. The Lakers scored both of their goals on the power play. Lake Superior 2 at Northern Michigan 4 - March 4, 2005 Four straight goals by Dusty Collins, Andrew Contois (short-handed), Jamie Milam and Pat Bateman gave the Cats the 4-0 lead. The Lakers added two goals in the third period for the final margin. NMU was 2-6 on the power play and Tuomas Tarkki had 24 saves on thenight. NORTHERN MICHIGAN NOTES... A Look At The Huskies... St. Cloud State is coming off a 2-1 loss to the University of Alberta on Saturday (Oct. 8). Casey Borer scored the lone goal for the Huskies. SCSU was overall last year and in the WCHA, which was good for ninth place. SCSU returns three of its top four scorers from last year, Joe Jensen ( ), Justin Fletcher ( ) and Billy Hengen ( ). Both goaltenders from last year are back. Tim Boron ( ; 3.01;.904) and Jason Montgomery (4-5-0; 2.92;.886) are the net minders back for the Huskies. 2

NMU was picked third in both preseason polls conducted by the CCHA. The Cats collected 96 points in the coaches poll and 494 with one firstplace vote in the media poll. Current Streaks... NMU has won 20 or more game six of the past seven years. Record Crowds... NCAA Stats... Following is where NMU ranks as a team and individually The Berry Events Center has seen five from 4,000+ crowds for hockey games. The first game with over 4,000 fans was against Lake Superior State (3/3/01) as 4,039 people went through the gates. The second crowd was 4,052 against Notre Dame (1/24/04). The top three crowds were during the season as a new record was set against Michigan Tech as 4,216 (2/17/05) people went through the gates, 4,163 saw the Michigan State game (10/23/04) and 4,197 were C at the Michigan Tech game (11/6/04). NHL Picks... NMU has 11 NHL draft picks on the roster the most among CCHA teams. The Cats who have been drafted: Dusty Collins (T.B.), Spencer Dillon (FLA), Patrick Murphy (EDM), Darin Olver (NYR), Nathan Oystrick (ATL), Mike Santorelli (NSH), Andrew Sarauer (VAN), Matt Siddall (ATL), Dirk Southern (ANA), Zack Tarkir (N.J.), and Geoff W augh (DAL). Olver, second-round pick of the New York Rangers in 2004 (36th overall), is the highest draft choice in school history. No Place Like Home... During the season the Cats were at the Berry Events Center. NMU went at home before suffering a Feb. 5 loss to the Nanooks of Alaska Fairbanks. Who Is Between The Pipes... For the second year in a row the Cats must find a replacement in goal. Last year Tuomas Tarkki stepped in and was named the CCHA Player of the Year. This year Bill Zaniboni and Derek Janzen will battle for some playing time. Both played last weekend in the exhibition games. All Back... Everyone who lettered last year as a defenseman is back. Nathan Oystrick who was the CCHA s Best Defensive Defenseman last year leads the group. Top10... Nine of the top 10 scorers from last year return to the squad. Darin Olver leads the way ( ) followed by Andrew Contois ( ), Mike Santorelli ( ) and Dirk Southern ( ). Olver led the team in assists and points, and Contois in goals. A 3

Motzko served as the assistant coach at the University of Minnesota from DebutII... The Cats will also have someone new on the bench. John Olver makes his NMU debut on Friday night. He is the new assistant coach, who took over for Dave Shyiak. Olver must recently was a coach in the ECHL with Idaho. Cluster Standings... Under the CCHA s rivalry pairing cluster scheduling format, NMU, whose rivalry partner is Lake Superior State, is joining W estern Michigan and Ferris State for the campaign. Players from each school earn points throughout the season each time they are named a star of the game (5 points for 1st star, 3 points for 2nd star and 1 point for3rdstar). At the end of the season, the CCHA will crown a Perani Cup champion as well as honor individual winners from each school.
