After jumping to a 2-0 lead Friday, the Lakers gave up five unanswered goals in a 5-2 loss. On Saturday, Miami took a 2-0 lead, which LSSU trimmed to 2-1 in the second period. The Lakers also out-shot the RedHawks 10-5 in the third period, but failed to tie the game. Power play success helped the RedHawks sweep LSSU in Sault Ste. Marie for the first time in school history. Despite dropping to 1-2-1, opponents hold only a slim 20.2 to 20.0 average shot advantage over the Lakers. Last season, opponents out-shot LSSU by an average of 37.2 to This Week LSSU s opponent from the 1988 NCAA Championship game, St. Lawrence, will play at non-conference series in the Sault this weekend. The Lakers lead the all-time series against the Saints, 9-4-2, and have a record at home. St. Lawrence, with an enrollment of 2,200, is the LSSU s only opponent on the schedule with a smaller enrollment. LSSU s enrollment this year is approximately 3,100. The Lakers will attempt to avenge last season s 6-1 loss and 2-2 overtime tie in Canton, N.Y. LSSU goaltender Matt Violin stopped what was then a career-high 50 shots in Game 2 of the series. Later in the year, he totaled a school-record 60 saves at Alaska Fairbanks. St. Lawrence (1-4-2) has gone since a season-opening 3-1 victory over Miami. Last weekend, the Knights lost 3-2 and 7-2 to then fifth-ranked Maine. The Black Bears scored three goals in a 5:06 span of the first period to beat the Saints on Saturday. Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Tony Bosbous, Judge Nick Lambros and LSSU President Betty Youngblood are expected to be on hand to judge the Halloween costume contest during the first intermission of Friday s game. Prior to the game, children in costume are invited to trick or treat in the dorms. They can also trick or treat around the upper bowl of Taffy Abel Arena during second intermission.

2 Lake Superior State coach Frank Anzalone Frank Anzalone is entering his 11 th season overall and the third year of his second stint with the Lake Superior State University hockey team. Anzalone built Laker Hockey into a national powerhouse in the 1980s and led the program to its first NCAA Division I National Championship in During his first collegiate tenure, Anzalone s Lakers made four NCAA Tournament appearances. After leaving LSSU, he coach in the professional ranks for 10 years. For the second time in his career, Anzalone is rebuilding Laker Hockey from the ground up. With two recruiting seasons under his belt, he is getting closer to putting together a blue collar team that fits the traditional Laker mold. Anzalone coached two seasons in the United States Hockey League before joining the Lakers in 1982 as an assistant to Bill Selman. He LSSU v. The Lakers advanced to the conference championship at Joe Louis Arena and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in The Lakers lost in a two-game series to eventual NCAA-champion Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y. In 1986, they finished fourth in the CCHA. The next year, they were third in the league, then lost to Ohio State in a disappointing playoff series on home ice. That led to 1988, Lake Placid, N.Y., and the NCAA National Championship. Mark Vermette scored 45 goals in , and freshman goaltender Bruce Hoffort anchored the defense. Lake Superior beat St. Lawrence 3-2 in overtime to win the title. The tournament run brought Sault Ste. Marie and LSSU immense national exposure, including a feature article in Sports Illustrated. Anzalone was also named NCAA Coach of the Year in In 1989 and 1990, the Lakers finished sec- Laker Hockey Game Notes, page 2 ond in the CCHA and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal before losing out, at Harvard and Colgate, respectively. Prior to his return to LSSU, Anzalone coached the Pee Dee Pride of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), where his team won the 2000 Palmetto Cup and he was named the ECHL all-star coach. His Lowell (Massachusetts) Lock Monsters won the Atlantic Division in the American Hockey League (AHL). Anzalone spent five years building the ECHL expansion team Roanoke Express and won the Northwest Division in Nine of his players went on to sign free agent contracts with the AHL or IHL. He coached the Toms River North (N.J.) High School team to a state title in after spending a season each with the Nashville Knights (ECHL) and Newmarket Saints (AHL). He is the first repeat coach in 35 years of Laker Hockey, both the fifth and eighth coach at LSSU. Anzalone and his wife, Teresa, have a son, Francis (16).
