Senior forward Pat Leahy ranks second on the team in scoring and paces Miami in assists with and is tied for sixth in the CCHA in helpers. Junior Ken Marsch, who was the team s leading scorer from the blueline with , has been declared academically ineligible and will miss the remainder of the season. At Munn Ice Arena: The Spartans are (.797) all-time vs. the RedHawks in East Lansing Current Streak: MSU enters tonight s game with a two-game win streak against Miami. Longest MSU Win Streak vs. Miami: 16, Nov. 19, 1982-Oct. 25, 1986 Longest MSU Unbeaten Streak vs. Miami: 16 (16-0-0), Nov. 19, 1982-Oct. 25, 1986 Longest MSU Losing Streak vs. Miami: 4, Oct. 30, 1992-Oct. 29, 1993 Longest MSU Winless Streak vs. Miami: 4 (0-3-0), Oct. 30, 1992-Oct. 29, 1993 First Meetings: Dec. 5-6, 1980 The Spartans took three of four points from the then- Redskins by tying Miami, 4-4, and beating them, 6-3, in East Lansing. Last Season: Nov , 1999 The RedHawks stunned the Spartans by posting a 3-2 and 3-0 victories over MSU at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford. March 10-11, 2000 MSU avenged its earlier sweep at the hands of the RedHawks by handing Miami 6-2 and 5-1 defeats in the first round of the CCHA playoffs. MSU-MIAMI NOTES: The Spartans are in the midst of a season-high four-game home winning streak that started with a 5-0 win vs. Lake Superior State on Nov. 21. Miami is the last team to sweep MSU in Munn Ice Arena. The RedHawks downed the Spartans by 1-0 and 3-2 scores in East Lansing on Feb , The Spartans are vs. Miami at Munn since that sweep. The RedHawks are also the last CCHA team to take a two-game league set from the Spartans. Miami turned the trick at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford on Nov , 1999, taking 3-2 and 3-0 decisions from MSU. 2

3 The Spartans have hung five or more goals on Miami in six of the last nine meetings between the two teams dating back to Jan. 31, Seven of those contests during that span have been decided by three or more goals. INJURY REPORT Junior centerman Joe Goodenow (Detroit, Mich.) is listed as questionable for the Miami series after reinjuring his right shoulder vs. Yale at Munn Ice Arena on Jan 5. He missed the Yale game on Jan. 6 and was out for both games of last weekend s sweep of Lake Superior State. He sat out eight games earlier this season with a similar injury. LAST WEEKEND S RECAP It was a long, strange weekend as Michigan State ventured to Sault Ste. Marie for a twogame set with a determined Lake Superior State team but the Spartans returned to the Lower Peninsula a day later than expected with four additional points in the CCHA standings and a 20-game unbeaten streak. On Friday, John Nail (Brampton, Ont.) scored a bizarre game-winning goal with 1:26 left in regulation and Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) made 18 saves in a record-setting shutout as the top-ranked Spartans escaped Taffy Abel Arena with a 2-0 victory over the Lakers. Nail s goal, a blast from just inside the center line, somehow eluded Lake Superior State netminder Jayme Platt. The Spartan senior notched his fourth game-winning goal of the year, fourth among NCAA Division I skaters in that category. The Spartans outplayed Lake Superior State for most of the first two periods, outshooting the Lakers over the game s first 40 minutes. MSU s power play, which had clicked at a.333 scoring rate in its last four outings, was shut down, however, and Platt did his best to keep the Spartans at bay. Ironically, junior defenseman Andrew Hutchinson (Rochester Hills, Mich.) let loose with a blast in the first period from about the same spot where Nail scored his winner. The puck deflected off Platt s glove and caromed off the goal post. While MSU notched the only goals of the final period, it was Miller that made the lategame heroics possible. The sophomore denied the Lakers all night, including an acrobatic save with 3:21 left in regulation when he dove back into the crease to smother a puck batted out of the air by LSSU s Jason Nightingale. Miller s shutout was his second in a row and 13th of his MSU career. He now owns the school record outright, having passed Chad Alban for sole possession of first place. He also moved out a first-place tie with Alban on the CCHA s shutout list by posting his 11th whitewash in league play. Senior Andrew Bogle (Calgary, Alta.) scored an empty-net goal with four seconds left to provide the final margin of victory. The series finale was originally set for Saturday, but ice maintenance issues forced the postponment of the game until the following afternoon. On Sunday, Rustyn Dolyny (Fort Frances, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left in overtime as the Spartans notched an improbable 2-1 victory over the Lakers, extending the MSU unbeaten streak to 20 (17-0-3) dating back to Oct. 20. MSU sent the game in the extra session when Bogle scored the Spartans first goal a power-play tally with five seconds left in the third period. With Miller pulled for an extra attacker, the senior centerman picked up a loose rebound in front of the Laker net and batted it past sprawling Laker netminder Jayme Platt. Dolyny s notched the winning tally when he and linemate Damon Whitten (Brighton, Mich.) broke into the LSSU zone two-on-one. Whitten sprung Dolyny with a pretty pass and the senior captain deked Platt for his seventh goal of the year. Lake Superior State took the 1-0 lead late in the second quarter, snapping Miller s scoreless streak at 182:04 in the process. The Lakers took advantage of a two-on-one advantage of their own when forward Kyle Anderson jumped off the bench and onto the ice as a penalty to teammate Matt Frick expired. Anderson fired a shot on goal, but the puck deflected off the stick of defenseman Brad Fast (Fort St. John, B.C.) and slid between Miller s legs. The shutout was the 13th of Miller s MSU career, giving him sole possession of first place on the school s all-time list, breaking a tie with Chad Alban. Miller s shutout was the 11th of his career against a CCHA opponent, giving him the conference record in that category, also formerly held by Alban. The Brampton, Ont., native had his career-high four-game point streak snapped Sunday. Nail has already set a personal best for goals in a season this year (eight) and needs just two more points to top his previous season best of 14 set last year. He also leads the Spartans with four game-winning goals on the year and entered the weekend ranked tied for sixth among NCAA skaters in that category. OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMEN MSU blueliners Andrew Hutchinson and Brad Fast each notched assists in Sunday s Spartan win vs. LSSU. Hutchinson has in the Spartans six games following the Christmas break and is in his last 15 games played. Fast has five assists since the holiday break and has scored in MSU s last 15 games played. SPARTANS TOP NATIONAL POLL AGAIN The MSU hockey team maintained its status as the nation s unanimous No. 1 team as the Spartans received every first-place vote in the U.S. College Hockey Online and USA Today/American Hockey Magazine polls the second straight week. MSU, which pulled off a two-game sweep at Lake Superior State over the weekend, received 600 points and 40 first-place tallies in the USCHO rankings released Monday (Jan. 15). Boston College, North Dakota, St. Cloud State and New Hampshire comprised the rest of the top five. The Spartans captured all 18 first-place votes and 270 total points in the USA Today rankings, also Jan. 15. As in the USCHO poll. BC, North Dakota, St. Cloud and UNH made up the rest of the top five. CURRENT, FUTURE SPARTANS RANKED IN NHL DRAFT REPORT One current MSU player and three future Spartans are listed as potential National Hockey League draft picks according to mid-season rankings released last week by the league s Central Scouting Service. The CSS report consists of four separate lists the top 240 North American skaters, the 30 best North American goaltending prospects, the top 100 European forwards and defensemen and the seven best netminders in Europe. Forward Jim Slater, who plays with Cleveland of the North American Hockey League and will be an MSU freshman next season, is projected as a third-round draft pick (76th overall). Current freshman Jeremy Jackson is tabbed as a fourth-round pick (91st overall).

7 Two members of next year s crop of newcomers are projected as fifth-round selections. They are defenseman Duncan Keith (134th overall), who is a member of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League s Chilliwack Chiefs, and forward Brock Radunske, who now plays with Newmarket of Ontario s Provincial Junior Hockey League. Forward Lee Falardeau, another MSU recruit who now plays with the U.S. National Development Team, is projected as a sixth-round pick (151st overall). Ohio State s R.J. Umberger, who is ranked fourth overall, is the highest-rated college player on the January CSS list. The CSS will release a final ranking combining drafteligible North American and European skaters in April. I VE GOT THE POWER Three individuals with MSU ties are among those highlighted in the annual rankings of the 100 most powerful individuals in hockey according to The Hockey News. They are: Bob Goodenow (No. 2), president of the NHL Players Association, father of Spartan junior center Joe Goodenow. Harley Hotchkiss (No. 22), a 1950 MSU graduate and captain of the Spartan hockey team as a senior, who currently owns the NHL s Calgary Flames and heads the league s Board of Governors. Tom Anastos, a four-year letterwinner under Ron Mason in the early 80s and current commissioner of the CCHA who graduated from MSU in 1985, is mentioned as one of four rising influences in the game. DETROIT S WDFN TO CARRY SPARTAN HOCKEY GAMES Six Michigan State hockey regular-season games will be broadcast on WDFN-AM 1130 in Detroit, the station and the university announced. The agreement marks the first time Spartan hockey games have been carried by a Detroit radio station. Five MSU games are currently on WDFN s broadcast schedule with a sixth to be named at a later date. Scott Moore, the voice of Spartan hockey since , will serve as playby-play announcer and will be joined by analyst Jim Mullin. The games WDFN has committed to carry are: Jan. 6 (Sat.) Yale at Michigan State 7:05 p.m. EST Jan. 20 (Sat.) Miami at Michigan State 7:05 p.m. EST Jan. 27 (Sat.) Michigan vs. Michigan State (at Detroit) 7:35 p.m. EST Feb. 17 (Sat.) Although the PWR does not precisely duplicate the method used by the selection committee, the PWR has exactly predicted the NCAA Tournament field in each of the last three years. HOW IT WORKS The PWR compares teams at or above.500, judging them by five criteria: record against common opponents, record in last 16 games, head-to-head competition, record against other teams at or above.500, and the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). The RPI takes results from games between two teams that each play 20 or more games against Division I opponents and from them, produces a statistical rating. Factors involved are the team s winning percentage, the average winning percentage of the team s opponents, and the average winning percentage of the team s opponents opponents. These factors are multiplied by 35%, 50%, and 15% respectively. Remember the RPI is just one part of the PWR. For each head-to-head comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based upon the number of points won against teams at or above.500. Ties are settled by the RPI. WHAT IT MEANS Remember, the PWR is not used by the NCAA selection committee to determine the tournament field. However, the raw data that is combined to form the PWR is utilized by the selection group to determine who makes the tournament and who doesn t. Basically, the PWR is an overview of what the selection committee looks at when deciding which teams get at-large bids and which don t. WHO GETS IN The playoff champion in five leagues the CCHA, ECAC, HOCKEY EAST, MAAC and WCHA all receive automatic berths in the NCAA Tournament. That leaves seven at-large bids for the selection committee to hand out in mid-march. WHO S LEFT OUT For the most part, the top 12 teams in the PWR over the last three years have been part of the NCAA Tournament field. However, the selection committee has the wherewithal to override statistical comparisons in cases where the numbers don t tell the whole story. For example, MAAC member Quinnipiac was not invited to the NCAA Tournament last year despite a top-10 PWR rating because its winning percentage and strength of schedule numbers were skewed high. IS IT BETTER THAN THE BCS? Yes. It s based solely on facts head-to-head record, strength of schedule, record over the last 16 games, and so on. There are no elements of the weekly polls involved. And no one benefits by running up the score, so MSU s 1-0 win over Michigan in November means no more than Boston College s 8-5 victory against the Wolverines at the Great Lakes Invitational last month. THE PWR IS KEEPING ME UP AT NIGHT AND GIVING ME A HEADACHE. DO I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT? If you re a fan of a team in the top eight of the PWR, then probably not. If you follow a MAAC or CHA school or a team in spots nine through 15, then you might want to keep an eye on it. But remember, there are still six weeks left in the regular season anything can happen. Your team could also win its conference s playoff championship, rendering this entire discussion moot.
