The Bulldogs opened the campaign with a pair of upset victories over top-10 teams Boston College and New Hampshire but have dropped six of eight since. The Bulldogs are paced by senior forward Jeff Hamilton. A 1999 Hobey Baker Award finalist and a second-team Titan East All-American selection in 1998 and 1999, Hamilton missed most of the campaign with an injury but has returned to lead Yale and the ECAC with seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points through 12 games. Hamilton s linemates senior captain Ben Stafford ( ) and sophomore Nick Deschenes ( ) are the only other Bulldog skaters who ve reached double fig ures in scoring this season. Defenseman Jeff Dwyer, with on the year, leads Yale freshmen and blueliners in points. Junior Dan Lombard has started every game in goal for the Bulldogs this season. He s posted a record in 12 contests to go along with a 3.89 goals against average and a.881 saves percentage. THE SERIES VS. THE BULLDOGS: Overall: The weekend series marks the first meetings between Michigan State and Yale. Special Series Note: By agreement of both teams, Friday s game will feature two referees and two linesmen. One referee and two linesmen will work Saturday s contest. MSU-YALE NOTES: The Spartans own a (.807) regular-season record against non-conference opponents at home during the Ron Mason era. Three of those seven losses came in Mason s first season at MSU. In its last ten home games against non-conference foes, MSU is (.850), with the lone loss coming vs. Wisconsin as part of the 1999 College Hockey Showcase. MSU is unbeaten in four home games against ECAC competition during Ron Mason s tenure with the Spartans. MSU earned a win and a tie against Rensselaer at Munn Ice Arena last season and owns single victories over Princeton (1980) and Cornell (1995) in East Lansing. The Spartans all-time record against ECAC opponents stands at (.644) entering the Yale series. The weekend set vs. Yale marks the Spartans last non-conference contests of the regular season. MSU is in the midst of four straight games against opponents from outside of the CCHA. MSU is this year against non-conference foes but have not faced an ECAC team this season. MSU is vs. HOCKEY EAST opponents and against WCHA rivals. LAST WEEKEND S RECAP MSU solidified its claim as the nation s top team with a pair of victories at the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Wins over Boston College and Michigan 2

3 Tech gave the Spartans their fourth-straight Great Lakes championship, marking the second time in school history that MSU has won four GLI titles in a row. In the tournament s first round on Friday (Dec. 29), senior winger Rustyn Dolyny (Fort Frances, Ont.) scored two goals and added two assists as MSU downed second-ranked Boston College, 4-1, earning the right to advance to the GLI title match against Michigan Tech, who knocked off fourth-ranked Boston College, 7-3, in the other semifinal match. We take a lot of pride in coming down here and defending our title, said Dolyny. It was an uneventful first period for the Spartans with Boston College scoring the first goal of the game with 22 seconds remaining in the opening frame on a four-on-four situation. The Eagles Krys Kolanos took a pass from Brooks Orpik, then skated into the slot uncontested before wristing the puck past MSU netminder Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.). I thought the first five to seven minutes we were still practicing and we couldn t get our feet going, said MSU head coach Ron Mason. The second period we really got it going. We played a solid game once we laid back and played defensively. It was a good team effort all the way around. Andrew Hutchinson (Rochester Hills, Mich.) tallied MSU s first goal 1:23 into the second period to tie the game. The goal, Hutchinson s first of the season, was set up by senior Damon Whitten (Brighton, Mich.). Whitten was breaking toward the Eagle net down the center of the ice and found Hutchinson all alone near the goalmouth to BC netminder Scott Clemmensen s left. Dolyny had enough time to look back at the clock as the second period came to a close before blasting the puck past Clemmensen top-shelf at 19:56 for a power-play goal. Jeremy Jackson (Langley, B.C.) and Brian Maloney (Bassano, Alta.) each received assists on MSU s eventual game-winner. The play was set up by Jackson, who was stationed behind the BC net and threaded a perfect pass to Dolyny as he was breaking to the net. For his second goal of the night and sixth of the year, Dolyny gave the Spartans a 3-1 lead with an insurance goal at 10:01 into the third period. John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind.) received the helper. Whitten provided the final margin of victory with a goal at 16:56 of the third off a backhanded pass from Dolyny. Brad Fast (Fort St. John, B.C.) also received an assist on Whitten s marker. Miller made 26 saves for the Spartans. Clemmensen stopped 27 shots for Boston College. On Saturday, it was only fitting that a senior notch the game-winning goal for MSU in the Great Lakes Invitational championship game. John Nail (Brampton, Ont.) scored the winner with 56 seconds left in overtime as the top-ranked Spartans ( overall) dealt Michigan Tech a 3-2 defeat in front of 18,363 in a game that will be talked about for years to come. The win gives MSU s senior class an unblemished 8-0 mark in the nation s top regular-season hockey tournament. I saw the puck in the defenseman s feet, went for it, and chipped it ahead, said Nail of his unassisted tally that ended the three-and-a-half hour marathon. Then I made the only move that I could think of at the time. Nail s marker atoned for a third period in which Michigan Tech rallied to send the game into the extra session, erasing a 2-0 Spartan lead with a pair of goals. Tech s Justin Brown halved the MSU edge halfway through the final regulation frame when he scored a virtual empty-net goal. MSU goaltender Ryan Miller was taken out by Tech s Tab Lardner, who was driving toward the net and managed to get a shot on goal. Lardner s rebound caromed to Brown, who was breaking into the slot for the easy finish. The Huskies ( overall) tied the game at 5:42 on a controversial goal by Jeff Keiver. Keiver and teammate Chris Durno were driving to the net as a Tech power play expired when the puck careened in front of the goalmouth and off Keiver s skate past Miller. Referee Steve Piotrowski immediately signaled the goal, a decision upheld by the video officials, ultimately determining the Tech player did not intentionally kick the puck into the net. MSU took a two-goal edge with late scores in each of the first two frames. Damon Whitten, stationed to the left of Tech netminder Brian Rogers, opened the scoring by tipping a wrist shot off the stick of defenseman Brad Fast (Fort St. John, B.C.) with 1:19 remaining in the first period. Andrew Hutchinson scored his second goal of the tournament with four seconds left in the second stanza, picking up a loose puck in the slot and firing it high over Rogers into the net. The Huskies thought they had jumped out to a 1-0 edge just 40 seconds into the game when the aforementioned Keiver knocked the puck into the Spartan net. The tally was disallowed, however, because the puck was played past Miller with a glove. Boston College captured GLI third-place honors. The Eagles defeated Michigan, 8-5, on Saturday to earn a split in tournament play. 3 USCHO POLL (Jan. 2) Rank Team (first-place votes) Votes 1 Michigan State (39) Boston College (1) North Dakota Colorado College Western Michigan New Hampshire St. Cloud State Michigan Minnesota Providence Wisconsin Rensselaer Vermont Denver Maine 76 Others receiving votes: Northern Michigan 67, Cornell 13, Ohio State 10, Quinnipiac 10, Boston University 6, MSU-Mankato 2, Harvard 1, Merrimack 1, Miami 1, Northeastern 1, St. Lawrence 1 USA TODAY/AMERICAN HOCKEY MAGAZINE POLL (Jan. 2) Rank Team (first-place votes) Votes 1 Michigan State (17) Boston College (1) North Dakota Colorado College Western Michigan New Hampshire Michigan St. Cloud State Minnesota Wisconsin Providence Rensselaer Vermont Denver Maine 28 Others receiving votes: Northern Michigan 27, Harvard 8, Ohio State 4, Cornell 3 POLLS: WEEK-BY-WEEK USCHO USA Today 10/ / / / / / / / / / / / / /8 1/15 1/22 1/29 2/5

MSU won the Great Lakes Invitational for the fourth straight year, marking the second time the Spartans have won four consecutive GLI titles. Coach Ron Mason s charges also accomplished the feat from The Spartans overtime win vs. Michigan Tech in Saturday s GLI title match ended a sixgame MSU winless stretch in OT games. The team had been in extra-session affairs since beating Northern Michigan in overtime at Munn Ice Arena on Feb. 11, MSU is now all-time in overtime games at Joe Louis Arena following Saturday s victory over Michigan Tech. The Spartans are in GLI overtimes and now have four wins in four OT games against Michigan Tech in GLI play. Including Saturday night s overtime thriller, eight of the last 10 games between Michigan State and Michigan Tech at the Great Lakes Invitational have been decided by one goal. MSU s record in GLI title games improved to overall with Saturday s win, including all-time vs. Michigan Tech. The Spartans unbeaten streak reached 16 (13-0-3) with win against Boston College and Michigan Tech at the GLI. It s MSU s best stretch since , when the team was unbeaten in 23 straight (18-0-5) from Dec. 4, 1998-March 5, The team s record away from Munn Ice Arena this season marks the Spartans best road start ever. MILLER TIME MSU netminder Ryan Miller earned Great Lakes Invitational Most Valuable Player and all-gli honors after stopping 68 of 71 shots in 139:04 of action, leading the Spartans to their fourth straight tournament crown. He also posted a shutout streak of 92:09 during the tournament extending from the first period of MSU s game vs. Boston College to the third frame of the championship match against Michigan Tech. The East Lansing product, who has started 24 consecutive games in goal for MSU, has allowed two or fewer goals in 17 of his last 18 starts and all but two games this season. 4

5 Miller avenged his performance vs. Boston College in the first round of last year s NCAA Tournament in Minneapolis by allowing one goal on 27 shots against the Eagles in the GLI first round. HEY, DON T FORGET ABOUT US! Three Spartan skaters joined Miller on the Great Lakes Invitational all-tournament team. They were: Senior forward Rustyn Dolyny, who matched a career-high with a four-point outburst (two goals and two assists) vs. Boston College. Dolyny has scored four points in a game on two other occasions, the most recent coming Feb. 13, 1998 vs. Western Michigan. His two goals also matched a career best. The Fort Frances, Ont., native also earned GLI all-tournament honors in Junior defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, who scored a pair of goals in the tournament, including the Spartans first goal in Friday s semifinal against Boston College Senior wing Damon Whitten, who notched a goal and an assist vs. BC and added a tally vs. Michigan Tech. His assist on Hutchinson s goal vs. the Eagles was his 60th career point and his first-period goal against the Huskies was his 30th in a Spartan uniform. The 2000 GLI marked the third straight year that MSU placed four players on the alltournament team. WHO DOES NO. 2 WORK FOR? The Spartans are now this season in No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups following last Friday s win vs. Boston College. MSU handed Minnesota a 3-2 defeat in a College Hockey Showcase game in Minneapolis on Nov. 24. Incidentally, both the Spartans and Gophers were top-ranked teams in that game. MSU was No. 1 and Minnesota No. 2 in the USCHO poll while the team s swapped positions in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine rankings. MSU s win over Boston College also gave the Spartans a record this season against teams that have been No. 1 at one point this season. The Eagles were ranked first in the Nov. 6 USA Today poll. Other former No. 1 s MSU has defeated Michigan (Oct. 31, both polls), Minnesota (Nov. 6 USCHO poll, Nov. 20 USA Today poll) and Wisconsin (Oct. 23, both polls). I VE GOT THE POWER Three individuals with ties to Michigan State are among those highlighted in the annual rankings of the 100 most powerful individuals in hockey according to The Hockey News. They are: Bob Goodenow (No. 2), president of the NHL Players Association, father of Spartan junior center Joe Goodenow. Harley Hotchkiss (No. 22), a 1950 MSU graduate and captain of the Spartan hockey team as a senior, who currently owns the NHL s Calgary Flames and heads the league s Board of Governors. Tom Anastos, a four-year letterwinner under Ron Mason in the early 80s and current commissioner of the CCHA who graduated from MSU in 1985, is mentioned as one of four rising influences in the game. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman tops the rankings. SPARTANS TOP NATIONAL POLL The Michigan State hockey team did last week what the rest of the nation s top-ranked squads couldn t make it through the holiday season without a loss. Coach Ron Mason s Spartans, who captured their fourth straight Great Lakes Invitational title with wins over Boston College and Michigan Tech, held on to the top spot in this week s U.S. College Hockey Online and USA Today/American Hockey Magazine polls. MSU received 39 of 40 first-place votes and 599 points in the USCHO poll. Despite losing to the Spartans in the GLI first round, Boston College held on to the second spot in the rankings, receiving one first-place vote. North Dakota, which also dropped a game to Boston University at the Badger Showdown in Milwaukee, stayed in the third position. Colorado College and Western Michigan, both winners over the holiday week, each climbed two spots. The Spartans captured 17 of 18 first-place votes and 269 total points in the USA Today rankings, with Boston College, North Dakota, Colorado College and Western Michigan rounding out the top five. The Eagles received the other first-place vote in the USA Today poll. Other Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams in this week s rankings in addition to MSU and Western Michigan are Michigan (8 th USCHO, 7 th USA Today), Ohio State and Northern Michigan (receiving votes in both polls) and Miami (receiving votes USCHO). TOP-RANKED MONOPOLY Not only does Michigan State boast the nation s top-ranked college hockey team, but East Lansing is also home to the country s No.-1 rated men s basketball team as the defending national champion Spartans held onto their position at the top of this week s Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. The dual No. 1 s mark the first time in history that a school s hockey and men s basketball teams have been ranked as the nation s top teams simultaneously during the regular season. Michigan s men s hoops and hockey squads were both preseason No.-1 picks prior to the start of the teams campaigns but the Wolverine icers had fallen from the top spot by the time the basketball season started. 6
