Flynn, a defenseman from Lino Lakes, Minn., is second in the league and fourth in the nation in points by a defenseman with 30 points ( ). His +15 is tied for the team lead and best among the Falcon defensemen. He was named the AHA Player of the Week, Oct. 22, the first league honor of his career, when he scored three points (1-2-3) in AFA s sweep of 14th-ranked Quinnipiac. Flynn is one of just four defensemen in the nation to have 30 or more points and is the first Falcon defenseman with 30 or more points since Beau Bilek had 37 points in He had four points in the AHA quarterfinal series vs. Bentley, March 7-9, to help Air Force advance to the AHA Final Five. AFA has led the nation in shots allowed in each of the last two seasons, giving up just 25 shots per game. The Falcons have been even less generous this season. AFA has allowed just 24.1 shots per game this season. The national average for shots per game is 29. Air Force has held its opponents to 20 shots or less 12 times this season. In the last seven games, Air Force has allowed an average of 18 shots per game. 7 AIR FORCE HOCKEY PAGE 7 LAST WEEK - AHA CHAMPIONS March 15: Brent Olson and Matt Fairchild each scored two goals and Andrew Volkening posted his fourth shutout in the last seven games to lead Air Force to a 5-0 win over RIT in the semifinals of the Atlantic Hockey Association Tournament, Saturday, March 15, at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. An AHA record crowd of 3,933 watched as Air Force advances to the championship game for the second consecutive year. Air Force struck first on the power play when Brent Olson scored at the 6:32 mark. Defenseman Matt Charbonneau skated around a defenseman and made a centering pass to Olson right in front. The junior winger netted his 16th of the season for a 1-0 lead. AFA outshot RIT, 10-7, in the opening period and killed two Tiger power-plays, the No. 4 unit in the nation. The Falcons dominated the second period with three goals, two of them on special teams. Mike Phillipich gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the 5:49 mark with an even-strength goal. Charbonneau started the rush in his own end and fed Josh Schaffer down the left wing. Schaffer s centering pass was right on the tape of Phillipich coming down the slot. Midway through the period, RIT was trailing 2-0 and had a 5-on-3 power play for 57 seconds. Not only did Air Force kill the penalty, but the Falcons added to their lead. Brett Nylander fed Matt Fairchild in the neutral zone and the sophomore winger skated down the left side with an RIT player hanging all over him. He netted his third short-handed goal of the season, and his 10th of the year, to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the 10:04 mark. Then, with 2:42 remaining, Olson scored his second of the game on the power play. With a 4-on-3 advantage, Olson scored from Charbonneau and Jeff Hajner for a 4-0 lead. In the third period, Fairchild s second of the game gave Air Force a 5-0 lead at the 10:34 mark from Michael Mayra and Hajner. The shutout was the first ever in an AHA semifinal game and the largest margin of victory ever in the league semifinals. AFA is the first team to ever play in the championship game in consecutive years. Volkening stopped all 24 shots he faced in the game and now has four shutouts in his last seven games. RIT goalie Louie Menard made 22 saves for RIT. AFA was 2-for-7 on the power play while RIT was 0-7. Air Force out-shot RIT, 29-22, in the game. March 16: Josh Frider s goal 56 seconds into the second overtime lifted Air Force to a 5-4 win over Mercyhurst in the championship game of the Atlantic Hockey Association Tournament, Sunday, March 16, at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. With the win, Air Force ( ) wins its second consecutive AHA championship and earns the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Air Force, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will play in one of the four regionals on March The opponent and site will be determined on Selection Sunday, March 23. Mercyhurst ends the season with a overall record. Air Force is the first AHA team to ever win back-to-back titles. Air Force broke the scoreless tie with 1.9 seconds left in the first period. Midway through the period, Air Force killed off 34 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play. Then, with 21 seconds left, Ben Cottreau was called for charging, putting the Falcons on the power-play. Mike Phillipich took a shot fro the slot that was saved and Brent Olson collected it on the right side. His tough-angle shot from near the goal line got past Matt Lundin for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the second period when Frank Schiavone scored with a shot from the center point at the 13:23. Scott Kozlak made a no-look pass from the goal line to Schiavone who netted his fifth of the season. However, the final three minutes of the period was all Mercyhurst. Back-to-back penalties called on Greg Flynn and Frank Schiavone gave the Lakers 1:41 of a 5-on-3 advantage. The Lakers were buzzing around the net and Matt Fennell hit the cross bar with a shot on the power play. Just seconds later, Ben Cottreau scored on the flurry in front from Jeff Terminisi. After a penalty on AFA s Jeff Hajner, Laker winger Steve Cameron scored with a wrister from the left side to tie the game at 2-2 with 13.8 seconds left in the period. A wild third period saw Mercyhurst twice take the lead, only to have Air Force tie the game each time and force overtime. The Lakers took their first lead of the game less than four minutes into the third period when Nick Vandenbeld scored fro Chris Risi for a 3-2 Laker lead. The Falcons came back to tie the game at the 9:50 mark when senior Josh Schaffer scored on a flurry in front of the net. Mike Phillipich and Sean Bertsch assisted on the play to tie the game at 3-3. Just over a minute later, the Lakers took a 4-3 lead on a goal by Brett Robinson. His goal, a rebound of his own shot at the 11;09 mark, came from Matt Pierce and Kirk Medernach. AFA again tied the game 19 seconds later on a goal by Josh Frider. Olson took a shot from the left side that bounced off the back wall. Frider collected the puck and beat Lundin short side for his 12th of the season. Each team had chances late in the game, but it was the Lakers that had the final opportunity in regulation. Cottreau skated with the puck down the slot and Volkening made a save as the buzzer sounded, forcing overtime. In the first overtime, each team had 12 shots on goal. Mercyhurst had several odd-man rushes that were poked away by the Falcon defensemen or saved by Volkening. In the second overtime, Olson skated the puck down the right side and took a shot that was saved. Frider cleaned up the rebound for his second goal of the game and his 13th of the season. Mercyhurst outshot Air Force, 53-47, in the game. Volkening made a career-high 49 saves. Lundin made 42 for the Lakers. AFA was 1-for-6 on the power play while MC was 2-for-7.

8 AIR FORCE HOCKEY PAGE 8 SEASON STANDING NOTES TEAM CAPTAINS Junior winger Mike Phillipich will wear the C this season. Senior center Eric Ehn and defensemen Matt Charbonneau and Frank Schiavone will wear an A. The team captains are selected by vote of the players. HISTORIC VICTORY OVER DU Air Force s win over Denver was the Falcons first over DU since 1980, ending a 19-game losing streak to the Pioneers. The win was also AFA s first ever win over Denver at the Academy, ending an 11-game losing streak at home to the Pioneers. It was also the Falcons first win over a WCHA team since beating Colorado College, 6-5 in overtime, in 1985 at the Broadmoor World Arena. The win was the first over a top five team since beating fourth-ranked Colorado College, 7-6 in overtime in 1975 at the Academy. The win over the No. 4 team in the nation ties as the highest ranked team Air Force has ever beaten. TOSS YOUR HAT Sophomore Matt Fairchild netted his first career hat trick on Friday vs. Denver. It was the first hat trick by a Falcon this season and the first since Andrew Ramsey scored four vs. AIC, Nov. 17, 2006 Fairchild entered the game with just three goals this season and just six in the previous 61 games of his career. Fairchild tallied the second short-handed goal of his career and the second in the last four games. He also had a SHG vs. Sacred Heart to seal the 3-1 win. TOY TRICK For the eighth consecutive year, the Air Force hockey team helped brighten the holiday season for area children. At the Canisius series, Dec 7-8, the hockey team collected 560 toys which will be distributed to children in hospitals, clinics and shelters during the holiday season. In the eight years of the Toy Trick, the team collected and distributed more than 4,360 toys. The Air Force hockey team handed toys to children at the Colorado Springs Children s Hospital at Memorial and at the Denver Children s Hospital on Jan. 1, FROM JUNIORS TO THE ACADEMY For the first time in school history, the Falcons have a roster made up entirely of players who played junior hockey. Prior to Frank Serratore s arrival at the Academy in 1997, AFA rarely had a player with junior hockey experience. While most college hockey teams were older and more experienced because of players from the junior ranks, the Falcons relied almost strictly on players who came directly from high school. However, over the last few years, that fact has changed. Serratore s first team in had two players with junior hockey experience (Dan Davies and James Ord) and 29 that came straight from high school. Each year, the Falcons took more players from junior hockey. Last season, the Falcons had two players who came to the Academy straight from high school, but Andrew Ramsey and Ben Worker both have graduated. FIRST TIME IN PRESEASON RANKINGS For the first time in school history, the Air Force hockey team received votes in both preseason national polls. The Falcons have received votes before, but never in the preseason poll. Air Force was 20th in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine with seven votes. The Falcons were 29th in the USCHO/CSTV poll with six votes. SERRATORE IS ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH AT AFA Head coach Frank Serratore is the all-time winningest coach in the history of Air Force hockey. Serratore earned his 155th victory with a 3-2 win over UConn, Nov. 16. Serratore passed Chuck Delich ( ) and John Matchefts ( ) who each won 154 games at Air Force. Delich earned 154 wins in 12 seasons. Matchefts collected 154 wins in 11 years. Serratore s 155th win came in just over 10 full seasons. Serratore tied Delich and Matchefts with the win over RIT, Nov. 9. Serratore reached two milestones in the Quinnipiac series. The win on Friday was his 150th at the Academy. The win on Saturday was his 200th as a collegiate head coach. MOST GOALS SINCE... Air Force s seven goals vs. Mercyhurst are the most this season and the most since scoring seven vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Oct. 26, 2006, in the first game of the Lightning College Hockey Classic in Tampa, Fla. The seven goals ties as the most since scoring nine vs. Union in the Icebreaker Tournament at the Colorado Springs World Arena, Oct. 8, The seven goals are the most AFA has ever scored in an Atlantic Hockey Association game and are the second most AFA has ever scored in a conference game. In Air Force s first ever conference game vs. College Hockey America opponent Findlay, AFA defeated the Oilers, 8-1, at Cadet Ice Arena. VOLKENING SETS SCHOOL RECORD SCORELESS STREAK Sophomore goaltender Andrew Volkening set a new school record by shutting out Division I opponents for 133 consecutive minutes beginning with the Feb. 8 win over Mercyhurst. The Lakers scored at the 14:33 mark of the third period in a 3-1 AFA loss. He then blanked the Lakers, 7-0, the next night. After a weekend off, Volkening beat Canisius, 3-0, Feb. 22. In the second game, the Griffins scored at the 12:37 mark of the first period. Volkening broke the record of 131 consecutive Division I minutes set by Peter Foster in Volkening s streak is the second-longest in school history against all opponents. Pat Kielb s streak of 168 consecutive scoreless minutes came against Division II teams in Kielb posted back-to-back shutouts vs. Mankato State (then Division II) and still holds the school record with eight straight shutout periods. Volkening is the first goalie in school history to have back-to-back shutouts vs. Division I teams. SENIOR NIGHT Saturday night s game vs. AIC, March 1, marked the final regular-season home game for seven Falcon seniors. Bryan Becker, Matt Charbonneau, Eric Ehn, Ian Harper, Josh Print, Josh Schaffer and Frank Schiavone will make their final regular-season home appearance at Cadet Ice Arena. This senior class was part of the first service academy team to ever win a league championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The class has won more Division I games, 60, than any other in school history. The group has played in a combined 707 games with 295 points and eight wins from the goaltender (Harper).
