Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings). A 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the 3-on-3 overtime/shootout receives just one point for the tie. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. No. 18 Western Michigan hosts Air Force in the nonconference series with the Broncos the lone undefeated NCHC team at home this season at WMU is also unbeaten in non-conference play at 3-0-1, helping the NCHC boast a combined.635 non-conference winning percentage ( ) this season, which is tops among the six NCAA Division I men s conferences for the third straight season. NCHC teams are against Atlantic Hockey foes this season though Air Force faces two more NCHC foes next weekend. (page 9) For the third time this season, a different NCHC team is No. 1 in the country as Denver replaced Minnesota Duluth atop the polls. The NCHC is still home to the top two teams in the country for the fourth straight week with DU and UMD and is the only conference to have a team ranked No. 1 at any point this season. Five NCHC teams are now ranked in the USCHO. com Poll this week as Western Michigan entered the rankings for the first time this season at No. 18. It is the first time WMU has been ranked since March 17, 2014 when WMU was No. 19. North Dakota is now No. 8 and St. Cloud State moved up to No. 12. (page 9) The NCHC is home to three of the top seven goal-scorers in the country. WMU sophomore forward Matheson Iacopelli, who tallied only one goal as a freshman, is tied for second nationally with 10 goals this year. Omaha senior forward Austin Ortega and Miami senior forward Anthony Louis are both tied for fourth in the NCAA with nine goals each. Miami s Louis became the second active NCHC player to reach the Century Club with 100 career points last weekend, joining Omaha s Ortega, who leads active NCHC players with 107 career points (59g, 48a). Ortega s 59 career goals lead all active NCAA players, while his 22 career game-winning goals are only one shy of tying the NCAA career gamewinning goals record. Louis now has 102 career points (41g, 61a), while UMD senior forward Alex Iafallo is next-closest at 86 points (35g, 51a). Two of the best power play teams in the nation call the NCHC home as Omaha is home to the best power play unit in the country, scoring 32.7 percent of the time on the man advantage (18-for-55). Western Michigan leads the country with 19 power play goals and is sixth with a 25.0 percent conversion rate (19-for-76). Omaha s 18 power play goals are second. UMD freshman goalie Hunter Miska is tied for the NCAA lead with three shutouts this season, though he is the lone rookie in the group. Denver junior goalie Tanner Jaillet is sixth nationally with both a.934 save percentage and a 1.66 goals-against average. 3 Colorado College Tigers Head Coach: Mike Haviland (3rd year) Record at CC: Record: ( , 8th) Record: ( , 6th NCHC) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 21/5 The Tigers dropped a pair of NCHC games last weekend, falling to then No. 13 St. Cloud State twice at home. In Friday s 7-3 loss, senior captain Sam Rothstein collected the second two-goal game of his career. His first came last season on Nov. 28, 2015 vs. Air Force. Freshman goaltender Alex Leclerc made a career-high 33 saves against SCSU on Saturday night in a 4-1 defeat. His previous career high was 22 saves against UMass Lowell back on Oct. 14. Sophomore goalie Jacob Nehama recorded the first point of his career with an assist last Friday against the Huskies. CC has scored 14 first-period goals this season in 10 games, topping its entire total for the first period from last season (13 goals, last in the NCAA). The 14 first-period markers rank second in the NCHC this season and in the top 15 nationally. However, the Tigers only have 13 goals in the second and third periods combined this season. Team Notes/Match-Ups Denver Pioneers Head Coach: Jim Montgomery (4th year) Record at DU: Record: ( , t-2nd) Record: ( , 2nd NCHC) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 18/6 Denver extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-1 overtime tie and a 3-2 win at North Dakota last weekend. DU has gone over that stretch after dropping its first two games of the season. The Pioneers have outscored their opponent, 23-12, during the unbeaten streak, which is the third longest active unbeaten streak in the NCAA. Denver s 1.50 goals allowed per game over its eight-game unbeaten streak rank second nationally (since Oct. 14) behind only Bemidji State (1.40). Junior goaltender Tanner Jaillet has allowed only one goal in five of his last seven starts and given up only nine goals in those seven games after allowing a combined six goals in his first two starts this season. On the season, Jaillet is sixth nationally with both his 1.66 goalsagainst average and his.934 save percentage (both tops in the NCHC). Denver is ranked No. 1 in the country in both national polls this week. 4 Team Notes/Match-Ups Miami RedHawks Head Coach: Enrico Blasi (18th year) Record at MU: Record: ( , 5th) Record: ( , 8th NCHC) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 10/12 Miami was swept at home by Omaha last weekend as the RedHawks are stuck in a five-game losing streak. Miami has been outscored over its five-game losing streak after allowing just six goals during its five-game unbeaten streak prior to this skid. Senior forward Anthony Louis has put up at least one point in eight of his last nine games with five multi-point and three multi-goal games during that stretch. He leads the team with 15 points (9g, 6a) this season with his nine goals tying for fourth nationally. After two goals Saturday against Omaha, sophomore forward Kiefer Sherwood has recorded 16 goals and 30 points in his last 34 games dating back to last season. He already has six multi-point games this season after notching just one as a freshman. After killing off 37 straight penalties from Oct. 7-29, Miami has allowed 10 power play goals its last 28 times short-handed, killing off power plays at only a 64.3 percent rate. The Bulldogs bounced back for a 2-0 win Saturday to stay in first place in the NCHC. Both senior left winger Alex Iafallo and senior defenseman Carson Soucy will come into this weekend armed with career-long six-game scoring streaks. Iafallo continues to top the NCHC in points with 16 (8g, 8a) and is tied for ninth nationally. He has 12 of those points during his six-game scoring streak (6g, 6a). Freshman goalie Hunter Miska pitched his third shutout of the season already in Saturday s win over WMU with 30 saves. His three whitewashes tie for first nationally while he is the lone rookie to do so. Right winger Joey Anderson is tied for third among NCAA freshmen in both scoring (14 points) and assists (10). 5 Team Notes/Match-Ups North Dakota Head Coach: Brad Berry (2nd year) Record at UND: Record: ( , 1st) Record: ( /0, 7th NCHC) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 18/9 UND s winless skid reached six games after a tie and a loss to NCHC rival Denver last weekend in Grand Forks. The six-game streak is the program s longest winless skid since a seven-game streak (0-5-2) during the season (Feb. 8-March 2). On Friday, he dished out an assist and posted a plus-3 rating to help the Mavericks rally for a 6-4 win. The next night, Ortega totaled three points on two goals and an assist, tallying his first goal short-handed to extend his point streak to six games. He was named the game s Second Star Saturday, logging a plus-2 rating and putting seven shots on goal in a 6-2 victory. Ortega finished the series with two goals, two assists, a plus-5 rating and nine shots on goal. Snuggerud chipped in four points while helping Omaha go 8-for- 11 on the penalty kill at Miami. In Friday s 6-4 comeback win, the Blackhawks prospect handed out the primary assist on the game-winning goal in the third period to break a 4-4 tie. The next night, Snuggerud recorded a season-high three points, notching the game-winning goal to break a 2-2 tie, while adding an assist and a power play goal later. He was named First Star in Saturday s 6-2 win, putting five shots on goal. Snuggerud ended with two goals, a pair of assists, a plus-2 rating and a blocked shot. Ahcan helped SCSU sweep at Colorado College with a threepoint weekend, while SCSU limited the Tigers to four goals in the series. In Friday s 7-3 victory, he tallied two points, scoring the game-winning goal in the second period on the power play while assisting on a power play goal earlier in the game. The next night, Ahcan set up another power play goal as the Huskies rolled to a 4-1 win. He played on SCSU s top defensive pair both nights, while helping SCSU s penalty kill go 9-for-11 against the Tigers in the series. Ahcan totaled a goal, two assists and a blocked shot. Jaillet backstopped Denver to a four-point weekend at then No. 6 North Dakota with a win and a tie. He allowed only three goals at UND while posting a 1.44 goals-against average and compiling a.944 save percentage. In Friday s 1-1 overtime tie, Jaillet compiled 29 saves, while helping kill both UND power plays, as he was named the game s Third Star. A night later he again earned Third Star of the Game, totaling 22 saves in a 3-2 victory, while helping kill 3-of-4 Fighting Hawks power plays. Jaillet finished the weekend with 51 saves on 54 shots faced. 8 Players of the Month/Awards Player of the Month Brock Boeser North Dakota Sophomore Forward Burnsville, Minn. NCHC Monthly Honors - October Boeser started his sophomore campaign with a bang, tallying points in each of his first five games this season, including four multi-point games to lead North Dakota to a start. He totaled 12 points in seven games in October, which led the NCHC and tied for third nationally in scoring, while his 1.71 points per game also led the NCHC. Boeser tied for the NCHC lead with his six goals and six assists. He was twice named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week during the month and was named the game s First Star four times. Boeser opened his season with a four-point outing in a shutout of Canisius Oct. 7, scoring a goal and dishing out three assists, including on the game-winner. The next night he handed out two more helpers, again on the game-winning goal to complete a sweep, as he garnered his first NCHC weekly honor. The Vancouver Canucks first round draft pick was the game s First Star both nights as well, finishing the series with a plus-5 rating. Boeser had a monster weekend Oct against Bemidji State, scoring five of UND s eight goals in the series. In Friday s opener, he recorded a natural hat trick, his second career hat trick, as he led the Fighting Hawks to a 3-2 comeback win. Boeser capped his series with the Beavers by scoring two more goals in Saturday s victory while posting a plus-3 rating. UND s assistant captain was named First Star of the Game both nights, while he picked up his second NCHC weekly honor and was also named NCAA Third Star of the Week for his efforts. Boeser finished October with a plus-5 rating, which tied for fifth in the NCHC, while he fired 30 shots on goal, which was third in the conference. Of his six goals, five came even strength and one on the power play, while he tallied one game-winning goal. Rookie of the Month Henrik Borgström Denver Freshman Forward Helsinki, Finland After a slow start, Borgström caught fire in October, tallying points in four of his final five games during the month, including three multi-point games, to lead Denver to a record. In eight games, he tallied nine points on four goals and five assists with his nine points leading all NCHC rookies and tying for fifth nationally among freshmen. His four goals tied for the NCHC rookie lead and tied for third among NCAA freshmen. He was named First Star of the Game three times throughout October. Borgström was held pointless in his first three collegiate games, but exploded in his fourth for three points, scoring his first two career goals, including the game-winning goal, while also notching his first assist in a 3-1 win over then No. 2 Boston University Oct. 15. The Florida Panthers first round draft pick was named the game s First Star after having a hand in all three goals. The following weekend, Borgström added another three points in a sweep at Michigan State. He again had a hand in both goals in a 2-1 win Oct. 21, scoring the first goal and setting up the game-winner, while he dished out an assist in the series finale Saturday, as well a 3-1 victory. He was tabbed First Star of the Game in Friday s victory while logging a plus-2 rating each night against the Spartans. Borgström wrapped up his month by tying his career high with three points in a 4-2 win over Western Michigan Oct. 29. The 6-foot-3 center scored the game s first goal, while tallying a career-high two helpers, including on the game-winning goal, and was again named the game s First Star. Borgström led all NCAA rookies with 29 shots on goal in October, while two of his goals came on the power play and one was a game-winner. He also finished the month with a plus-5 rating and had an even or positive plus/minus rating in seven of his eight games. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post- Graduate Scholarship. North Dakota has won back-to-back Penrose Cups after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament consists of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 10-12, 2017). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Target Center in Minneapolis for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 17. (Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regular-season standings). 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, NOV. 11 On the first full night of conference play this season, road teams reigned supreme Friday as three teams went into opposing arenas and earned three points, while the fourth NCHC game ended in the first tie in conference play this season. Western Michigan handed top-ranked Minnesota Duluth its first NCHC loss with a 4-3 victory earned in the final minute, while Omaha scored the game s final five goals to dig out of a three-goal hole and top Miami, 6-4. No. 13 St. Cloud State erupted for seven goals in a 7-3 victory at Colorado College and No. 2 Denver and No. 6 North Dakota settled for a 1-1 overtime tie, with UND earning the extra point in the conference standings with the 3-on-3 overtime win. Sophomore forward Colt Conrad scored the deciding goal with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Western Michigan to a 4-3 win over No. 1/1 Minnesota Duluth Friday at AMSOIL Arena. The teams combined for six goals in an explosive first period, with the Bulldogs (7-2-2, NCHC) grabbing a 3-1 lead, before the Broncos (6-2-1, NCHC) scored twice in the final 3:10 of the period to pull even. Conrad tallied the game-tying goal with four seconds left in the opening frame, then buried the game-winner in the final minute for a two-goal night. Classmate Matheson Iacopelli continued his tear with a goal and an assist in the win, while UMD freshman forward Joey Anderson also tallied a goal and an assist in the loss for his third straight multi-point game. In another comeback effort Friday, Omaha rattled off five consecutive goals to close the game and earn a 6-4 win over Miami at Steve Cady Arena. The RedHawks (3-5-2, NCHC) jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the second period with three goals in a four-minute span in the middle frame, including two goals from senior forward Anthony Louis. The Mavericks (5-3-1, NCHC), however, scored four goals in the third period to steal the victory, with junior forward David Pope getting the game-winner. UNO sophomore forward Mason Morelli had two goals, book-ending the scoring. Seven different players scored a goal as No. 13/13 St. Cloud State powered past Colorado College, 7-3, for its first NCHC win this season at the Broadmoor World Arena. SCSU (5-4-0, NCHC) opened the game with three goals in a four-minute span in the first period, and pushed the lead to 5-0 in the second stanza before the Tigers (3-6-0, NCHC) got on the board. Junior forward Judd Peterson led the Huskies with three points on a goal and two helpers, while three other Huskies had multi-point games. Senior forward Sam Rothstein tallied two goals for CC. The lone home team to earn points Friday was No. 6/6 North Dakota, which earned a 1-1 tie with No. 2/2 Denver and picked up two points on the night by winning 3-on-3 overtime at Ralph Engelstad Arena. After a scoreless first 40 minutes, freshman forward Cole Smith opened the scoring 1:40 into the third period to put UND (5-3-2, NCHC) in front. The Pioneers (6-2-1, NCHC) pulled even on a power play goal from freshman forward Henrik Borgström with 5:13 left in regulation. After a scoreless first overtime, sophomore forward Shane Gersich tallied in 3-on-3 overtime to earn the Fighting Hawks the extra point in the standings. SATURDAY, NOV. 12 For the second straight night, three road teams were victorious in National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) play as two NCHC teams earned road sweeps Saturday. Omaha produced six goals for the second consecutive night to sweep Miami with a 6-2 win in Oxford, while No. 13/13 St. Cloud State scored the game s final four goals to top Colorado College, 4-1, and wrap up a sweep. Top-ranked Minnesota Duluth rebounded from its first NCHC loss Friday to blank Western Michigan, 2-0, and earn a split at home, while remaining in sole possession of first place in the NCHC. No. 2/2 Denver held off No. 6/6 North Dakota for a 3-2 win in Grand Forks, capping a four-point weekend for the Pioneers. Just like Friday night, Omaha potted six goals, including the final four of the game, to complete a road sweep of Miami Saturday with a 6-2 win at Steve Cady Arena. The Mavericks (6-3-1, NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of special teams goals, including the first of two goals from senior forward Austin Ortega, which came short-handed. Miami (3-6-2, NCHC) answered with a pair of power play goals from sophomore forward Kiefer Sherwood late in the first frame to pull even, but junior defenseman Luc Snuggerud tallied the game-winner on the man advantage in the second period, the first of four straight Omaha goals to close out the victory. Snuggerud finished with three points on the night, including two power play goals and an assist, as the Mavericks went 3-for-8 on the man advantage. Omaha returns home next weekend to host No. 1/1 Minnesota Duluth for a pair of NCHC games, while the RedHawks hit the road for two games at No. 2/2 Denver, looking to snap a five-game losing streak. Extending its unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1), No. 2/2 Denver escaped Ralph Engelstad Arena with a 3-2 win over No. 6/6 North Dakota. Sophomore forward Shane Gerisch tallied both UND (5-4-2, NCHC) goals, putting the Fighting Hawks ahead only 33 ticks into the game. The Pioneers (7-2-1, NCHC) answered with a pair of first-period goals to take the lead while Gersich drew UND even in the second stanza. DU freshman forward Henrik Brogström broke the tie for good, scoring the game-winning goal less than a minute after Gersich tied it. Shots were nearly even with UND holding a slight, 24-23, edge. Next weekend, UND hits the road for two games at No. 13/13 St. Cloud State looking to snap a six-game winless skid, while Denver returns home to host Miami for a pair of NCHC games. Rebounding from its first NCHC loss on Friday, top-ranked Minnesota Duluth pitched its third shutout of the season to earn a 2-0 win over Western Michigan at AMSOIL Arena and a weekend split. Both goals by the Bulldogs (8-2-2, NCHC) came on the power play as UMD went 2-for-8 on the man advantage. Senior forward Alex Iafallo had a hand in both goals, opening the scoring in the first period while setting up the other goal in the second stanza. Senior defenseman Carson Soucy had the primary helper on both goals while freshman goalie Hunter Miska stopped all 30 shots he faced for his third career shutout already. The Bulldogs outshot WMU (6-3-1, NCHC), 35-30, in the win. First-place UMD heads to Omaha for two games next weekend while the Broncos host Air Force in a pair of non-conference clashes. In the final game of the night, No. 13/13 St. Cloud State overcame an early deficit to score the final four goals and a 4-1 victory over Colorado College at the Broadmoor World Arena to cap a weekend sweep. The Tigers (3-7-0, NCHC) went up 1-0 on a power play goal by freshman forward Bryce Van Horn, but sophomore forward Mikey Eyssimont tied the game in the final minute of the first frame and put the Huskies (6-4-0, NCHC) in front for good with a power play marker early in the second stanza.
