The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, DEC. 1 With three top-20 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) match-ups on the schedule, Friday night did not disappoint, as all three contests provided excitement, while in the lone non-conference game, Miami upset a top-five foe. No. 2/2 St. Cloud State moved into a first-place tie atop the NCHC standings with a 7-4 win at No. 20 Omaha. The Huskies are now tied with No. 10/8 Western Michigan, which couldn t complete a late rally in a 4-3 loss at No. 6/6 North Dakota. In a rematch of last year s national championship game, top-ranked Denver pulled out another one-goal win over No. 16/15 Minnesota Duluth, as senior Tanner Jaillet pitched a shutout in a 1-0 victory. And Miami knocked off No. 5 Cornell behind a strong special teams performance, 2-1, in Oxford in the NCHC s only non-conference game Friday. No. 2/2 St. Cloud State showed why they re the highest-scoring team in the country, potting seven goals in a 7-4 win at No. 20 Omaha Friday night at Baxter Arena. The Mavericks (6-6-1, NCHC) jumped in front early, but the Huskies (10-2-0, NCHC) answered a few minutes later with two goals in less than two minutes to take the lead, the second of which came off the stick of sophomore forward Jake Wahlin, for the first of his two goals. Senior forward Tyler Vesel pulled Omaha level midway through the first frame, but SCSU grabbed the lead for good when freshman forward Easton Brodzinski scored late in the opening period. The Huskies tacked on two more goals in the second period to extend the lead to 5-2, but senior forward David Pope, who had a two-point night, and sophomore forward Zach Jordan scored in the first five minutes of the third to bring UNO within one. Wahlin sealed the win, however, with his second goal and third point of the night, while junior forward Mikey Eyssimont added an empty-netter for his own two-goal, three-point night. Junior goalie Jeff Smith made 40 saves to earn the win for SCSU, as Omaha outshot the Huskies, In a goaltending duel, senior Tanner Jaillet was one save better than sophomore Hunter Shepard as top-ranked Denver edged No. 16/15 Minnesota Duluth, 1-0, Friday at AMSOIL Arena in a rematch of last year s national championship game. Jaillet compiled 28 saves for the defending national champion Pioneers (8-3-2, NCHC) to earn his first shutout of the season and fifth of his career. After an even first period, junior forward Logan O Connor knocked in a loose puck for the game s only goal early in the second stanza. Shepard totaled 25 saves to keep the Bulldogs (7-7-2, NCHC) in the game, but Jaillet could not be beaten. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play, while UMD held a slight, 28-26, edge in shots on goal. In a back-and-forth top-10 clash, No. 6/6 North Dakota outlasted No. 10/8 Western Michigan, 4-3, Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The first three goals of the game all came on the power play with two from senior forward Austin Poganski for UND, sandwiched around a tally from WMU sophomore forward Dawson DiPietro. The Fighting Hawks (9-4-4, /1 NCHC) then made it 3-1 less than two minutes after Poganski s second marker with an even strength goal, but again WMU (9-6-1, NCHC) had an answer as freshman forward Brett Van Os scored his first career goal to make it a one-goal game after 20 minutes. Freshman forward Collin Adams tallied the game-winner for UND in the second period, as sophomore forward Wade Allison struck late in the game on the power play to bring the Broncos within one, but WMU couldn t find the equalizer with an extra attacker and a power play for a three-man advantage. UND outshot Western Michigan, 29-21, in the win, while both teams were 2-for-7 on the power play. In the lone non-conference game Friday, Miami used strong special teams and good goaltending to knock off No. 5/5 Cornell, 2-1, Friday at Steve Cady Arena. Alex Rauter put the Big Red (9-2-0) up early in the game, but Miami (7-6-2) killed a five-minute power play for Cornell, to help turn the tide. The RedHawks then struck on the power play late in the first period off the stick of freshman forward Casey Gilling to tie the game. Sophomore forward Gordie Green tallied the game-winner for the RedHawks on the man advantage late in the second stanza with an assist from Gilling as both had two-point nights. Sophomore netminder Ryan Larkin totaled 29 saves to earn the win in net for Miami, as the RedHawks were outshot, Miami finished 2-for-2 on the power play and was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. SATURDAY, DEC. 2 Brooms could be found all across the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Saturday night as three top-10 teams completed weekend sweeps of their conference opponent, while the NCHC dropped its lone non-conference game on Saturday. Second-ranked St. Cloud State, the nation s top-scoring offense, continued to roll, putting up another five goals in a 5-0 win at No. 20 Omaha to complete a sweep, as freshman David Hrenak logged his second career shutout to push SCSU into first place in the NCHC. Also finishing off a road sweep was top-ranked Denver, which scored only three goals all weekend, but got a late goal from rookie Jake Durflinger Saturday to break a tie and give DU a 2-1 win over No. 16/15 Minnesota Duluth. The third NCHC team to cap a sweep was No. 6/6 North Dakota, which used a three-goal third period to down No. 10/8 Western Michigan, 4-1, in Grand Forks and move into second place in the conference, one point back of the Huskies. In the only non-conference game involving an NCHC team Saturday, Miami was held off the scoreboard in a 4-0 setback to No. 5/5 Cornell, as the RedHawks settled for a series split. A night after tallying a season-high seven goals, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State kept its offense in high gear, potting another five in a 5-0 win at No. 20 Omaha Saturday night at Baxter Arena to complete a weekend sweep. Freshman goaltender Dávid Hrenák made a career-high 40 saves to earn his second career shutout in only his fifth start, as the Mavericks (6-7-1, NCHC) outshot the Huskies (11-2-0, NCHC), 40-33, doing so for a second straight night. After a scoreless first period, sophomore forward Jake Wahlin, who also handed out an assist, opened the scoring with his third goal of the weekend, while the first of two SCSU power play goals made it 2-0 a few minutes later. The Huskies then tacked on three goals in the third period with junior defenseman Jon Lizotte scoring even strength to cap a two-point night, while sophomore forward Jack Poehling tallied short-handed and junior forward Robby Jackson added the second power play marker to cap the scoring and push SCSU into first place in the NCHC. The Huskies finished 2-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. Next weekend, St. Cloud State returns home to host No. 6/6 North Dakota, while Omaha remains at home to welcome in No. 16/15 Minnesota Duluth. In the most exciting game of the night, top-ranked Denver scored with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to Dec. 4-10, 2017 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 17

18 Previous Week Round-Up break a tie and knock off No. 16/15 Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, Saturday at AMSOIL Arena, finishing off a series sweep. With the game even at 1-1, freshman forward Jake Durflinger found the back of the net with only 4:04 left in the third period for his fourth goal of the season and the game-winner. After a scoreless first frame, junior forward Jarid Lukosevicius put the Pioneers (9-3-2, NCHC) on top with only 21 ticks left in the second stanza. The Bulldogs (7-8-2, NCHC) then pulled even when senior forward Blake Young scored his second goal of the year midway through the third, setting the stage for Durflinger s first career game-winning goal. Despite the loss, UMD heavily outshot the Pioneers, 28-15, but senior goalie Tanner Jaillet made 27 saves to earn the win in goal for DU. Denver heads back to Colorado next weekend for a home-and-home series with rival Colorado College, while the Bulldogs hit the road for two games at No. 20 Omaha next Friday and Saturday. Behind a three-goal third period, No. 6/6 North Dakota downed No. 10/8 Western Michigan, 4-1, Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena, capping a series sweep of the Broncos and moving UND within one point of first place in the NCHC. WMU (9-7-1, NCHC) jumped in front when freshman forward Austin Rueschhoff scored the game s first goal midway through the middle period, but junior forward Nick Jones answered for the Fighting Hawks (10-4-4, NCHC) with only 23 ticks left in the second stanza to tie the game. Sophomore forward Cole Smith then tallied the game-winner for UND only seven seconds into the third period, the fastest goal to start a period in NCHC history. After a power play goal made it 3-1 midway through the final frame, freshman forward Grant Mismash sealed the North Dakota win a few minutes later off a feed from Jones, as each assisted on the other s goal for two-point nights. UND outshot WMU, 25-20, in the win, while going 1-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Next weekend, UND faces second-ranked St. Cloud State for two games in St. Cloud, while Western Michigan returns to Kalamazoo to host Miami for a pair of NCHC contests. One night after using strong special teams to upset No. 5/5 Cornell, Miami couldn t get its special teams going on Saturday, falling to the Big Red, 4-0, at Steve Cady Arena as the teams split their weekend series. Cornell (10-2-0) struck twice on the power play, both in the first period, to help them jump out to a 3-0 lead, scoring the third goal 35 ticks after the Big Red s second power play marker. Alex Rauter, who had a three-point night for Cornell, sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute. Despite the loss, the RedHawks (7-7-2) outshot the Big Red, 26-23, but CU s Hayden Stewart stopped all 26 shots for the shutout. Cornell finished 2-for-4 on the power play while Miami was 0-for-3 a man up. The RedHawks resume NCHC play next weekend with two games at rival No. 10/8 Western Michigan. #NCHCHockey Dec. 4-10, 2017
