The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation also issued a grant for the Penrose Cup. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament consists of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 11-13, 2016). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. NCHC #NCHCHockey Oct. 5-11, 2015

9 New NCHC Overtime and Standings Format New NCHC Overtime/Shootout Protocol Beginning with the season, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference adopted a new overtime and shootout format to award an extra point within the conference standings. After using a three-man shootout to decide tie games following the NCAA-mandated 5-on-5 overtime period during the NCHC s first two seasons, the NCHC Board of Directors and NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee approved the use of a 3-on-3 overtime between the NCAA-mandated overtime and the shootout, should a game remain tied after the 5-on-5 overtime. As has been the case in previous seasons, any conference game that remains tied after regulation will play the NCAA-mandated 5-on-5 (plus goalies) 5-minute overtime period, which is also done throughout all NCAA hockey conferences. If one team scores, they receive all three points in the conference standings while the losing team receives none. The game also counts as a win and loss nationally in the PairWise rankings. If no goal is scored, the game is considered a tie with both teams receiving one point in the conference standings and it is also called a tie nationally, also the same as previous seasons. Beginning with the season, if a conference game is still tied after the 5-minute overtime, the two teams will then play a 3-on-3 (plus goalies) 5-minute overtime period for the extra point in the conference standings, keeping all conference games worth three points. The result of the 3-on-3 overtime will not affect the PairWise rankings as the game is still considered a tie. If a team scores during the 3-on-3 overtime, the winning team will receive the extra point for two points in the standings while the losing team will receive the one point for the tie. The final score of the game will still reflect a tie, however. If the game is still tied after the 5-minute 3-on-3 overtime period, the game will then go to a sudden-death shootout for the extra point (rather than the three-man shootout in previous seasons). Each team will get one shooter, if one shooter scores and the other doesn t, that team wins the shootout and extra point in the standings (two points total). If both shooters score or neither scores, the shootout will continue with another round until a winner is determined. In summary, each conference game will be worth three points. Three points will be awarded to any team that wins a game in regulation or within the 5-minute sudden-death 5-on-5 overtime period. One point will be awarded to each team in a game that remains tied at the conclusion of the 5-on-5 overtime period (65 minutes). One additional point will be awarded to the team who wins the 3-on-3 overtime or sudden-death shootout, giving that team two points total. A team that loses in regulation or during the 5-minute 5-on-5 overtime period will receive zero points. Statistics accumulated during the 3-on-3 overtime period will NOT count in the conference or national statistics. Only statistics recorded during regulation and 5-on-5 overtime will count for statistical purposes, however 3-on-3 overtime statistics will be kept so they can be seen on live statistics during games and will be noted in the box score. The lone exception is a game misconduct or game disqualification penalty issued during the 3-on-3 overtime or shootout, which would be recorded at 5:00 of the 5-on-5 overtime. All other penalties will be enforced during the 3-on-3 overtime, however they will not count in conference or national statistics. A penalty called during 3-on-3 overtime will result in a 4-on-3 power play (or 5-on-3 power play if a two-man advantage). Non-conference games at NCHC member venues will follow the same overtime protocol upon receiving consent from the visiting non-conference opponent. NCHC Tournament games will not feature 3-on-3 overtime or shootouts, but rather 20-minute sudden death overtime periods, which will be played until a winner is declared (exception: The third-place game of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff will use a 5-minute overtime followed by 3-on-3 overtime and a sudden-death shootout, if necessary). New Conference Standings Format With the NCHC introducing a new overtime format for conferences games beginning this season, the NCHC has also slightly adjusted its conference standings format to reflect the new procedures. Although the point distribution and column point values within the standings are not changing, the look of the standings will be slightly altered. The first three columns of the conference standings will remain the same as they have the first two seasons with the first column representing a regulation or 5-on-5 overtime win (worth 3 points), the second column representing a regulation or 5-on-5 overtime loss (worth 0 points) and the third column still indicates games that end in a tie after the 5-on-5 overtime (worth 1 point). The slight modification is occurring in the fourth column (far right column), which previously was listed as SW and indicated a shootout win worth an additional point after the tie. In order to include results from the new 3-on-3 overtime format the NCHC announced on August 17, the far right column will now be listed as 3/SW to indicate either a 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win, both of which are still worth one additional point after the tie regardless of whether the game ends during the 3-on-3 overtime or has to be decided by a sudden victory shootout. During the NCHC s first two seasons, the conference standings/record were displayed as W-L-T-SW. Beginning this coming season, the conference standings format and conference record will be displayed as W-L-T-3/SW. When possible, conference records will be listed to include the backslash in the final column (Ex /1), otherwise the 3-on-3 overtime and shootout wins will be listed as one combined number (Ex ). The 3-on-3 overtime and shootout will not affect a team s overall record, nor will it affect the national PairWise Rankings, which determine the NCAA Tournament field. The result of the game following the 5-on-5 overtime is considered final by NCAA standards and would be reflected as such in a team s overall record and in the PairWise Rankings. Should a conference game remain tied after the 5-on-5 overtime, it would be considered a tie nationally regardless of the 3-on-3 overtime or shootout result. Oct. 5-11, 2015 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 9
