It marks UND s meetings with the Seawolves since when the two programs were last conference rivals. UND last visited Anchorage in Oct Media Coverage All UND men s hockey games, home and away, can be heard on 96.1 FM (The Fox) and on stations across the UND Sports Home of Economy Radio Network, as well as through the iheart Radio app. Longtime broadcaster Tim Hennessy, in his 39th season as the voice of UND men s hockey, calls the action while Steve Olson provides color analysis for all home games. About Alaska Anchorage The Seawolves made their debut last Saturday with a 6-1 exhibition win over Simon Fraser University in Eagle River, Alaska. Senior F Austin Azurdia had a hat trick and added an assist, while Matt Anholt and Nicolas Erb-Ekholm each had three assists. Anholt led the team in scoring last season as a junior with 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) in 34 games. Senior Olivier Mantha returns in goal after starting 29 of UAA s 34 games last season, going with a 2.82 goals against average and a.913 save percentage. Series History UND owns a (.713) advantage in the all-time series, which has been dormant since when the two teams were both members of the WCHA. UND is unbeaten (6-0-1) in the last seven meetings between the two programs and has a all-time mark in Anchorage. Last Action The Fighting Hawks tuned up for the regular season with a 6-2 exhibition win over the University of Manitoba last Saturday night. Sophomore Ludvig Hoff (Oslo, Norway) getting the first crack at centering UND s top line, scored twice to lead the offensive attack. Freshman forward Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn.) and junior defenseman Christian Wolanin (Detroit, Mich.) chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Senior Cam Johnson (Troy, Mich.) started the game and stopped 10 of 12 shots through two periods. He was relieved by freshman Peter Thome (Minneapolis, Minn.), who stopped all five shots he faced. Conference Call UND was picked third in the NCHC Preseason Media Poll released in September. Defending national champion Denver was the unanimous preseason conference favorite, with St. Cloud State voted runner-up: NCHC PRESEASON MEDIA POLL Rk. Team, Points 1. Poll Position UND was ranked No. 7 in both the USCHO and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason polls released in September, and maintained that same ranking in this week s edition of the USA Today poll. USCHO did not release a poll this week. The Seawolves enter the series unranked. Seven of the top 20 schools in the USCHO preseason poll are on UND s schedule: No. 1 Denver, No. 3 Minnesota, No. 6 Minnesota Duluth, No. 9 St. Cloud State, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 16 Union and No. 20 Western Michigan. Four other opponents received votes in the USCHO preseason poll: Bemidji State, Miami, St. Lawrence and Omaha. Refer to Page 3 for the complete national polls. Last Season UND advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 15th consecutive season, the secondlongest streak in the history of the sport. Shane Gersich (Chaska, Minn.) earned All- NCHC Honorable Mention recognition after leading the team in points (37) and goals (21). He was UND s first sophomore to hit the 20- goal plateau since Brock Nelson in Junior defenseman Tucker Poolman earned All-America honors and signed with the NHL s Winnipeg Jets, one of three players to sign NHL contracts following the season. Linemates Brock Boeser (Vancouver) and Tyson Jost (Colorado) also turned pro and made their NHL debuts prior to the end of the season. Tourney-Tested UND s aforementioned streak of 15 straight national tournament berths has been topped only by Michigan s streak of 22 in a row from 1991 to 2012: CONSECUTIVE NCAA TOURNEY BERTHS Rk. Many Happy Returns North Dakota welcomes back 18 letterwinners from last year s team, including 11 forwards, five defensemen and two goaltenders. Shane Gersich (40 GP, ) returns as the team s top scorer, followed by Austin Poganski (40 GP, ), Joel Janatuinen (36 GP, ), Trevor Olson (38 GP, ) and Ludvig Hoff (36 GP, ). On the blueline, UND returns Christian Wolanin (37 GP, ), Colton Poolman (40 GP, ), Hayden Shaw (28 GP, ), Andrew Peski (29 GP, ) and Casey Johnson (37 GP, ). Senior Cam Johnson returns between the pipes and is the school s career leader in goals against average (2.08). Sharp-Shootin Shane Junior forward Shane Gersich (Chaska, Minn.) was named to the NCHC Preseason All-Conference Team prior to the season. Gersich (21 goals) and fellow preseason allconference teamers Henrik Borgström (22) and Troy Terry (22) of Denver are the only returning 20-goal scorers in the entire NCHC. The rest of the preseason all-conference team included defensemen Louie Belpedio (Miami) and Jimmy Schuldt (St. Cloud State), along with DU goaltender Tanner Jaillet. Oshie, as well as that season s Hobey Baker Award winner, Ryan Duncan. Fresh Faces UND brings eight newcomers into the fold this year, including seven freshmen and former Ohio State forward Nick Jones (Jr., Edmonton, Alberta). Jones played the past two years with the BCHL s Penticton Vees after spending his freshman season and three games of his sophomore year at OSU. UND s seven freshmen include NHL draft picks Collin Adams (New York Islanders, 2016), Grant Mismash (Nashville, 2017) and Peter Thome (Columbus, 2016). Thome is the cousin of former UND pitcher Andrew Thome, now in the Houston Astros organization. The rest of the group features defensemen Gabe Bast (Red Deer, Alberta), Matt Kiersted (Elk River, Minn.) and Josh Rieger (Regina, Saskatchewan), along with forward Jordan Kawaguchi (Abbotsford, British Columbia). UND s coaching staff also underwent some changes in the offseason, with former goaltender Matt Hrynkiw replacing Karl Goehring as volunteer coach after Goehring was hired by the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. Additionally, former UND captain Matt Smaby returned to the program as a student-manager while he completes his degree. Smaby retired from an 11-year pro playing career that included four seasons with Tampa Bay. Leader(s) of the Pack Senior forward Austin Poganski (St. Cloud, Minn.) will serve as the captain of the Fighting Hawks in Poganski scored a career-high 12 goals as a junior in and matched his career high with 25 points. The St. Cloud, Minn., native was named to his third straight NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and was an NCHC Scholar-Athlete for the second year in a row. Berry began his head-coaching career in by leading UND to its eighth NCAA championship, becoming the first person in the history of NCAA Division I men s hockey to win a national title in his first year behind the bench. Last season, Berry guided the defending national champions to the program s 15th straight NCAA Tournament berth, the second-longest streak in the history of the sport. Berry has also continued UND s reputation for developing professional hockey players, churning out 12 such players in just two years, including six who have already played in the National Hockey League heading into the season: Brock Boeser (Vancouver), Drake Caggiula (Edmonton), Tyson Jost (Colorado), Paul LaDue (Los Angeles), Nick Schmaltz (Chicago) and Troy Stecher (Vancouver). A former NHL defenseman himself, Berry masterfully guided his alma mater to the program s eighth national title in his debut season of , bringing to a halt a 16-year drought for the storied program. Berry and the Fighting Hawks went , establishing a team record for most wins by a rookie head coach, and their.818 winning percentage was the second best in program history. Berry also led UND to its second straight Penrose Cup as National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular-season champion, resulting in NCHC Herb Brooks Coach of the Year honors. TOURN st t-3rd Champion th 2nd Regionals TOTALS Berry had recently completed his ninth season as an assistant coach at UND in He served two stints in that role, first from through and again from through He also previously spent time as an assistant coach with the NHL s Columbus Blue Jackets ( ) and the AHL s Manitoba Moose ( ). During his nine years on the UND staff, Berry helped lead the program to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, five NCAA Frozen Four berths ( , , , and ), three regular season conference titles ( , and ), and one conference tournament championship ( ). Berry oversaw the team s defensemen during both of his stints at UND and routinely produced blue line units that ranked among the conference national leaders, both offensively and defensively. In each of the last two seasons, UND led the nation in both points and points per game by defensemen. At the other end of the ice, UND allowed a league-low 2.24 goals against per game in and ranked among the top three in the conference in that category in five of Berry s last six seasons with the program. Before returning to UND prior to the season, Berry spent two years ( ) as an assistant coach with the NHL s Columbus Blue Jackets. Prior to that, Berry founded The Hockey Academy in Grand Forks, which focuses on developing and training youth hockey players within Grand Forks and surrounding areas. During that time ( ), he doubled as a parttime scout with the NHL s Vancouver Canucks. Berry was an assistant coach with the Manitoba Moose from and helped lead the Vancouver Canucks AHL affiliate to a playoff appearance in each of his two years, including a North Division title in At every stop during his career, Berry has enhanced his reputation as a coach who develops NHLdefensemen. Fourteen of his former UND pupils have played in the NHL, including two-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Greene of the Los Angeles Kings. While with the AHL s Manitoba Moose, Berry mentored future Vancouver Canucks stalwart Alexander Edler. During his two years with Columbus, Berry coached the likes of James Wisniewski, Mike Commodore, Jack Johnson and Kris Russell. Berry himself was a standout defenseman as a player, first at UND where he collected 74 points (12 goals, 62 assists) in 112 games from under legendary head coach John Gino Gasparini. Berry also won a gold medal with Canada at the 1985 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. A second-round draft pick (29th overall) of the Winnipeg Jets in 1983, Berry went on to play in 241 NHL games over eight years, including stints with Winnipeg, Minnesota and Dallas. His professional playing career also included stops in the Swedish Elite League and the International Hockey League (IHL). While with the IHL s Michigan K-Wings, Berry was a three-time IHL All-Star and was named the K-Wings Defenseman of the Year three times. After his playing career ended, Berry was a professional scout with the Dallas Stars team that advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.
