UMD Coaching Staff Former North Dakota All-America defenseman Scott Sandelin (UND 86) is in his 14th season as UMD head coach and is (.503). Sandelin s staff includes another former standout UND defenseman in Jason Herter (UND 05), as well as former Bulldogs Derek Plante (UMD 09) and Bill Watson (UMD 90). Series History UND leads the all-time series (.639), including a (.705) record in Grand Forks. During Dave Hakstol s tenure as head coach, UND owns a (.707) edge in the series. UND has lost just twice in the last 10 meetings between the two programs, including a record last season. Junior forward Mark MacMillan (Penticton, British Columbia) leads all active UND skaters with five points (2G, 3A) in four career games against the Bulldogs. Senior netminder Clarke Saunders (Brockville, Ontario) has made three career starts against Minnesota Duluth, making 46, 54 and 47 saves in those three appearances and totaling a.932 save percentage. Poll Position UND was ranked No. 13 in the most recent USCHO.com poll and No. 14 in the latest USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, which were released on Monday. Minnesota Duluth was ranked No. 20 in the USCHO poll but was unranked in the USA Today poll. Refer to Page 8 for complete poll information. Last Week UND picked up a series split at Nebraska Omaha last weekend, snapping a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win in Sunday s series finale. Senior netminder Clarke Saunders stopped 36 of 38 shots in Sunday s victory, with Derek Rodwell (Sr., Taber, Alberta), Michael Parks (SHG) (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Drake Caggiula (So., Pickering, Ontario) providing UND s goals. It was UND s first victory this season when scoring three or fewer goals after having previously gone in such games. Freshman forward Luke Johnson s (Grand Forks, N.D.) first collegiate goal (PPG) highlighted Saturday s 4-2 loss. Sophomore defenseman Jordan Schmaltz (Verona, Wis.) scored UND s other goal, his first of the season. Kill or Be Killed This weekend s series features two of the nation s top three penalty killing teams. In fact, five NCHC teams rank among the top 10 nationally, with Minnesota Duluth No. 1 at 93.6 percent and UND No. 3 at 92.5 percent: National Penalty Kill Leaders Rk. Team Totals Pct. 1. That also ended UND s streak of 32 consecutive successful penalty kills dating back to the 2:55 mark of the season opener against Vermont on Oct. 11. Get Shorty While UND saw its penalty killing streak come to an end in Sunday s win at UNO, it did manage to score its first shorthanded goal of the season. Junior forward Michael Parks (St. Louis, Mo.) scored on a 2-on-0 rush to give UND a 2-1 lead at 6:11 of the second period in an eventual 3-2 win. It was Parks first career shorthanded goal. It was also Parks sixth point of the season, just two shy of the eight he scored in 25 games during an injury-plagued sophomore season. Famous Dave Friday night s game against Minnesota Duluth will be Dave Hakstol s 400th game as North Dakota head coach. That s a milestone previously reached only by Hakstol s two predecessors, Dean Blais (410) and Gino Gasparini (664).

3 NOVEMBER 13, 2013 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES PAGE 3 Hakstol s 238 coaching wins also trail only Gasparini (392) and Blais (262). Crowded House UND has played before a capacity crowd in each of its four home games this season and is averaging an NCAA-leading 11,830 fans per home game in the 11,634-seat Ralph Engelstad Arena. UND is averaging just under 2,300 fans more per home game than any other school in Division I hockey. Minnesota ranks second nationally in average home attendance at 9,534. UND led NCAA Division I men s hockey in home attendance in , averaging 11,592 fans in its 21 home games, the only program in the country to average better than 10,000 fans per home game. A Rare Rut Following a home sweep at the hands of visiting St. Cloud State Nov. 1-2, North Dakota is looking to avoid its first 3-game home losing streak since December 2006, when it suffered back-to-back sweeps to Wisconsin (Dec. 8-9) and Michigan Tech (Dec ). UND actually enters the series winless in its last three at home, including a 2-2 non-conference tie against Vermont on Oct. 12. Last season UND went at home (.667) and is (.691) since moving into the new Ralph Engelstad Arena prior to the season. Saunders Stellar Sunday Senior goalie Clarke Saunders (Brockville, Ontario) received the starting nod in last Sunday s 3-2 win at Nebraska Omaha, his first start since UND s season opener on Oct. 11 against Vermont. Saunders responded by stopping 36 of 38 shots, the most saves by a UND goaltender in a single game this season. The game also marked the 75th career appearance for Saunders, who spent his first two seasons at Alabama-Huntsville before arriving at UND prior to the season. Block Party Senior captain defenseman Dillon Simpson (Edmonton, Alberta) blocked a game-high eight shots in Saturday s 4-2 loss at Nebraska Omaha. Simpson ranks second in the NCHC with 20 blocked shots, totalling exactly one-fourth of UND s team total of 80. Only Miami sophomore defenseman Taylor Richart (21) has blocked more shots this season than SImpson. Milestone Watch A pair of UND forwards achieved career firsts in last weekend s series split at Nebraska Omaha. In Saturday s 4-2 loss, Luke Johnson (Fr., Grand Forks, N.D.) scored his first collegiate goal with a power-play tally midway through the second period. In Sunday s 3-2 victory, sophomore Coltyn Sanderson (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) collected his first collegiate point when he assisted on Derek Rodwell s (Sr., Taber, Alberta) goal 2:26 into the first period. Simpson Up for National Award On Nov. 7, senior captain Dillon Simpson (Edmonton, Alberta) was named one of 20 national men s hockey candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. UND s youngest team captain in more than 20 years, Simpson was named to the College Hockey News Preseason All-CHN Second Team. He was named UND s Most Improved Player last season after leading the team s defensemen with a career-high five goals and 19 assists in 42 games. A fourthround draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 2011, Simpson enters the weekend with nine goals and 45 assists in 122 career games. In the classroom, Simpson is a managerial finance and corporate accounting major with a cumulative grade point average. He is both a two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete and a two-time All-WCHA Academic Team selection. One of UND s most active student-athletes in the community, Simpson had already given his time to more than 30 community service events as of October 2013, including Special Olympics, Northlands Rescue Mission, Great Grand Forks Senior Center, Grand Forks Public Library and more. Simpson is UND s third national candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, joining Robbie Bina in and Chay Genoway in Genoway was also named to the Senior CLASS Award All-America First Team. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Men s Frozen Final Four in April. USCHO.com DI Men s Poll (November 11, 2013) Rk Team (1st votes) Record Pts. PR 1. 12 PAGE 12 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES NOVEMBER 13, 2013 Now in his 10th season as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, Dave Hakstol has established himself as one of the most accomplished and well-respected bench bosses in NCAA hockey. The only active Division I coach with a winning record in every season of his career, Hakstol has guided his teams to either an NCAA Frozen Four berth, a conference regular season championship or a conference playoff title in nine of his 10 seasons. Through his first nine seasons as UND head coach, Hakstol has become the third-winningest coach in program history, compiling a (.648) overall record. A six-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year, Hakstol has guided UND to five NCAA Frozen Four appearances, four WCHA Final Five playoff championships, two WCHA regular season titles and has advanced to the NCAA postseason in each of his nine years. He was named WCHA Coach of the Year in Last season Hakstol guided the men s hockey program to its 11th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, the longest active streak in Division I men s hockey. Seniors Danny Kristo and Corban Knight were both named Hobey Baker Award finalists and All-Americans, while sophomore defenseman Nick Mattson distinguished himself in the classroom by earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. UND also reinforced its reputation as the top draw in NCAA Division I men s hockey by leading the nation in average home attendance (11,592), the only program in the country to average better than 10,000 fans per home game. In , Hakstol led an injury-depleted team to an unprecedented third consecutive Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA Final Five champions and was named Inside College Hockey s National Coach of the Year. With eight players missing 110 games due to injury, UND was forced to dress fewer than 18 skaters on 14 occasions, yet went 11-3 in those games, earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional, and advanced to the regional championship game for the sixth time in eight years. In the classroom, senior Brad Eidsness was named WCHA Most Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year while also receiving postgraduate scholarships from the WCHA and NCAA. Hakstol, 35 years old when he was named UND s head men s hockey coach on July 9, 2004, is just the 15th head men s hockey coach in school history and only the program s fourth head coach in the past 44 years. Hakstol, who wore the Kelly Green and White from , is also just the fifth former UND player to also become head coach at North Dakota. Hakstol joined rare company when he took UND to the Frozen Four in his first four seasons as a collegiate head coach, joining Jack Parker and Doug Woog as the only three coaches to accomplish that feat. In Hakstol s first season ( ) as head coach, he led a team with nine seniors to the Frozen Four. In his second season ( ), he led a team with 13 freshmen and just two seniors to the Frozen Four. In his third season, Hakstol took UND to the Frozen Four yet again, and sophomore forward Ryan Duncan won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the best player in college hockey. In , his fourth season, Hakstol led UND to a overall record and WCHA mark (second place). UND went overall and in conference play in en route to their WCHA-leading 14th league championship. Hakstol was also recognized as WCHA Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. In , Hakstol and UND added another piece of hardware to the program s championship lore with a Broadmoor Trophy as the WCHA Final Five champions, the second Broadmoor Trophy of Hakstol s distinguished tenure. Hakstol led The DAVE HAKSTOL File Hometown Warburg, Alberta Education Bachelor s Degree: Financial Management (UND 96) Family Wife, Erinn; daughter, Avery; son, Brenden Coaching 2004-present: Head Coach, UND : Associate Head Coach, UND : General Manager/Head Coach, Sioux City (USHL) 1998: Head Coach, USA/USHL Team, IIHF Four Nations Cup 1998: Head Coach, Central District Team USA, Select 16 Festival Coaching Awards Six-time Spencer Penrose Award finalist ( , 2011) : Inside College Hockey National Coach of the Year : WCHA Coach of the Year : USHL Coach of the Year Playing Career : Minnesota Moose (IHL) : Indianapolis Ice (IHL) : University of North Dakota UND to a overall record and a WCHA mark, landing an eighth straight NCAA postseason appearance, the third-longest streak in the nation. In , Hakstol led UND to a second MacNaughton Cup in three years as WCHA champions, giving UND an NCAA men s hockey-leading 15 conference titles. UND also won its second straight Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA playoff champions. In the process, Hakstol s squad turned in the third-winningest season (32 wins) in the program s illustrious history. Three of Hakstol s players garnered All-America honors in : forward Matt Frattin (first team), defenseman Chay Genoway (first team) and goalie Aaron Dell (second team). Frattin, who led the nation with 36 goals, was also a Hobey Baker Award Hobey Hat Trick finalist and the WCHA Player of the Year. He would debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada that same season. Genoway was named the WCHA s Most Outstanding Student-Athlete, while Dell won a school-record 30 games, toppling a 24-year-old record previously held by Hockey Hall of Famer Ed Belfour. The trademark of North Dakota hockey during Hakstol s tenure has been UND s ability to play its best hockey at the most crucial time of the year in the playoffs. During his first nine years, Hakstol has led UND to an overall postseason record of (.714) that includes a WCHA playoff record and 13-9 NCAA playoff mark. UND s 45 combined NCAA and conference playoff wins the last nine seasons are 15 more than any other WCHA team during that time. UND has also furthered its reputation for doing an outstanding job in preparing players for professional hockey careers and careers beyond hockey. Last season, more than 50 products of the program played professionally, including 13 who played in the National Hockey League. Among the 13 was former All-American Jonathan Toews, who captained the Chicago Blackhawks to their second Stanley Cup in the last four years. In the last seven seasons alone, 12 of Hakstol s former UND players have debuted the NHL the year after completing their collegiate careers, including Chay Genoway ( ), Brad Malone ( ), Matt Frattin ( ), Chris VandeVelde ( ), T.J. Oshie ( ), Chris Porter ( ), Taylor Chorney ( ), Brian Lee ( ), Brock Nelson ( ), Matt Smaby ( ), Drew Stafford ( ) and Travis Zajac. In , Toews made the jump directly to the NHL s Chicago Blackhawks after playing two years at UND. He was a finalist for the NHL s Rookie of the Year Award and in the summer of 2008 was named the captain of the Blackhawks, becoming the third-youngest captain in NHL history. Toews was 20 years and 79 days old when he assumed the role as Chicago s captain. In 2010, Toews led the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years, capturing Conn Smythe Trophy honors as playoff MVP in the process. Earlier that same
