The puck drops at 7:38 p.m. Central. The first semifinal features No. 2 seed Western Michigan against No. 3 seed Denver. The winners of the semifinals advance to Saturday night s tournament championship. The losing teams will square off in the thirdplace game on Saturday afternoon. About Miami The RedHawks advanced to the Frozen Faceoff by sweeping NCHC regular season champion St. Cloud State in the NCHC Quarterfinals. On Friday, Riley Barber scored midway through the first overtime period to give Miami a 5-4 win. The following night, the Red- Hawks scored four times in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit in an eventual 4-3 win. Forwards Austin Czarnik (45 points) and Barber (43) rank 1-2 in the NCHC scoring race, including a combined seven points in the series against SCSU. Forward Anthony Louis led all freshmen in scoring during the first round with three points. Miami Coaching Staff Enrico Blasi (Miami 94) is in his 15th season at the helm of his alma mater and owns a career record of (.593). Blasi s staff includes associate head coach Brent Brekke (Western Michigan 94), assistant coach Nick Petraglia (Miami 04), and volunteer assistant Derek Edwardson (Miami 04). Series History UND is (.786) all-time against Miami after taking three of the four regular season meetings this year. Friday will mark the first-ever playoff matchup between the two programs. Junior forward Michael Parks (St. Louis, Mo.) leads all UND skaters with eight points (2g, 6a) in four games against the RedHawks, while classmates Brendan O Donnell (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Mark MacMillan (Penticton, British Columbia) each have five points. Poll Position UND dropped one spot to No. 11 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls that were released on Monday. Miami was unranked in both polls. Refer to Page 3 for complete poll information. Last Weekend North Dakota defeated No. 7 seed Colorado College in three games in the NCHC Quarterfinals to advance to the NCHC Frozen Four. Brendan O Donnell s (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) early third-period goal on Sunday proved to be the series clincher in a 4-3 Game 3 victory. The line of Stephane Pattyn (Jr., Ste. Anne, Manitoba), Derek Rodwell (Sr., Taber, Alberta) and Connor Gaarder (Jr., Edina, Minn.) combined for five points, all in the first period as UND built a 3-1 lead. CC forced Game 3 with a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday, keyed by 44 saves from Josh Thorimbert. UND claimed the opener on Friday with a 4-2 win behind a goal and an assist from Drake Caggiula (So., Pickering, Ontario). Tourney Talk UND is playing in its conference tournament for the 12th straight season, the longest active streak in the nation. The last time UND failed to advance to its conference tournament was in , when it was swept by eventual national champion Minnesota in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs. UND won 11 playoff titles as a member of the WCHA, four of which came under current head coach Dave Hakstol. Most recently, UND won a league-record three straight Broadmoor Trophies from 2010 to UND is (.712) in conference and NCAA playoff games under Hakstol, which is 18 wins more than any other NCHC program during that 10-year span. UND is (.756) in conference playoff games under Hakstol, 10 more wins than any other NCHC program in that time. UND is 7-3 this season against the rest of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff field, going 3-1 against both Miami and Western Michigan and 1-1 against Denver. We re Going Streaking! He allowed exactly three goals in each of the other three starts, with all three of those coming against Colorado College. During his current 19-start stretch, Gothberg owns a 1.78 goals against average, a.929 save percentage and the first two shutouts of his collegiate career. In last Sunday s NCHC Quarterfinal series clincher against Colorado College, O Donnell s early third-period goal proved to be the game winner. It was his career-high third gamewinning goal of the season, tying him for the team lead, and came on the eve of St. Patrick s Day. This season O Donnell has also established career highs for games played (30), points (15), goals (7), assists (8) and plus/minus (+4). Block Party Senior captain Dillon Simpson (Edmonton, Alberta) blocked a team-leading nine shots in UND s 3-game first-round series against Colorado College, upping his NCHC-leading total to 93. Roaring Twenties With a record this season, 10th-year head coach Dave Hakstol is the only active coach in Division I men s hockey to reach the 20-win plateau in each of the last 10 seasons. Only John Gino Gasaprini, who won 20 games for 13 straight years from 1978 to 1991, had a longer streak of 20-plus wins at UND. Hakstol has also clinched a winning percentage of.600 or better for the 10th time in as many seasons. UND s lowest winning percentage in 10 years under Hakstol is.605 in That season included a MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular season champions and a WCHA Coach of the Year award. Quick on the Draw UND won 60.9 percent of its faceoffs in last weekend s 3-game series, going against the Tigers. All four of UND s primary centers won more than half of their draws in the series. Mark MacMillan (Jr., Penticton, British Columbia) went (.673), Rocco Grimaldi (So., Rossmoor, Calif.) went (.636), Bryn Chyzyk (So., Virden, Manitoba) went (.545) and Connor Gaarder (Jr., Edina, Minn.) went (.519). Additionally, Colten St. Clair (So., Gilbert, Ariz.) won eight of the nine (.889) faceoffs he took. On the season, UND has won 52.4 percent of its faceoffs, led by Grimaldi at He is just shy of Corban Knight s school record of 59.9 percent set in Hot Rod Senior forward Derek Rodwell (Taber, Alberta) had a team-leading three assists in three NCHC Quartefinal games last weekend against CC -- tying him for second-most in the league -- after entering the weekend with just two helpers in his first 25 games. Rodwell also established a new single-season high for points with 10, eclipsing the careerhigh nine he had as a freshman in Game Reunion The forward line of Stephane Pattyn (Jr., Ste. Slump Busters A pair of underclassmen snapped lengthy goal-scoring droughts last weekend in UND s 3-game series win over Colorado College. Freshman defenseman Troy Stecher (Richmond, British Columbia) scored his second goal of the season in Sunday s 4-3 win. It was his first goal since Nov. 2 against St. Cloud State, ending a 30-game drought. Sophomore forward Bryn Chyzyk (Virden, Manitoba) scored the game-winner in Friday s 4-2 victory, ending his own 15-game drought. In the Nick of Time Junior defenseman Nick Mattson (Chanhassen, Minn.) had one goal and five assists with a minus-5 rating in his first 12 games this season. But over his last 23 games, Mattson has racked up three goals and 10 assists to go with a plus- 13 rating. Gaarder opened the season without a single point through the first 11 games, but has since rebounded with five goals and eight assists in his last 26, giving him a career-high 13 points. Gaarder had two goals in a Feb win at St. Cloud State, improving UND s all-time record when Gaarder scores a goal to Kind of a Big Dill Senior captain Dillon Simpson (Edmonton, Alberta) scored his 11th career power-play goal on Feb. 22, giving him sole possession of eighth all-time among UND defensemen. It was Simpson s team-leading sixth PPG of the season, also tying him for eighth on UND s single-season list for defensemen. Rocco s Modern Life Sophomore forward Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) won UND s Virg Foss 3-Star Award for collecting the most 3-star voting points during the home schedule. UND s three stars are voted on by the print media in attendance. Foss covered UND and college hockey for the Grand Forks Herald for 35 years until retiring in He continues to cover UND home games for UNDsports.com. Previous winners of the award, which was introduced four years ago, include Danny Kristo in and and Matt Frattin in Five Spot UND scored five goals in the second period of a 5-2 win at St. Cloud State on Feb. 28. It was the most goals scored in a single period all season for UND, and marked the team s first 5-goal period since a 6-3 win over Minnesota in the 2012 WCHA Final Five semifinal. Hey Now, You re An All-Star Three North Dakota skaters earned All-NCHC honors earlier this month: senior defenseman Dillon Simpson (1st team), sophomore defenseman Jordan Schmaltz (2nd team) and junior forward Michael Parks (2nd team). Additionally, freshman defenseman Paul LaDue (Grand Forks, N.D.) was named to the all-rookie team. Simpson, who was the top vote-getter among defensemen, scored 19 points in 24 NCHC games to tie for the league lead among defensemen. The Edmonton, Alberta, native also led all rearguards in goals (6), power-play goals (5) and game-winning goals (2) while anchoring UND s power play and penalty killing units. Schmaltz, Simpson s defensive partner, was named to the second team after collecting four goals and 11 assists during conference play to tie for fourth in the defenseman scoring race. Parks scored a team-leading nine goals in 24 NCHC games and added 13 assists for 22 points. LaDue had four goals and eight assists in 23 conference games and led all NCHC freshmen with a plus-12 plus/minus rating. Head of the Class Ten UND players earned Academic All-NCHC honors, including senior captain Dillon Simpson (Edmonton, Alberta), who was also UND s representative on the NCHC Scholar Athlete Team. In addition to Simpson, the following players earned academic all-conference honors: Connor Gaarder (Jr., Edina, Minn.), Zane Gothberg (So., Thief River Falls, Minn.), Rocco Grimaldi (So., Rossmoor, Calif.), Matt Hrynkiw (Fr., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Mark MacMillan (Jr., Penticton, British Columbia), Mitch MacMillan (Sr., Penticton, British Columbia), Nick Mattson (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn.), Derek Rodwell (Sr., Taber, Alberta), and Coltyn Sanderson (So., Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan). Caggiula scored the goal one week after being stretchered off the ice after a mid-ice collision in UND s exhibition win over the U.S. Under-18 Team. He was released from the hospital later that night after all tests came back negative. National Parks Junior forward Michael Parks (St. Louis, Mo.) ensured his name will be a part of NCHC history when he scored the first goal in the firstever NCHC game on Oct. 18 at Miami. Conference Call The campaign marks UND s first year as a member of the brand new National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). Formed July 13, 2011, by charter members North Dakota, Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth and Western Michigan, the NCHC added St. Cloud State and Western Michigan two months later to give the league eight teams. UND departed the WCHA having won a league-record 15 regular season championships, as well as an additional 11 WCHA playoff titles. Many Happy Returns Tenth-year head coach Dave Hakstol returns 18 letterwinners from last year s team that went ( WCHA) and advanced to the NCAA West Region championship game. Sophomore Rocco Grimaldi (40 GP, ) and junior Mark MacMillan (42 GP, ) are the team s top returning scorers, while Simpson (42 GP, ), junior Nick Mattson (38 GP, ) and sophomore Jordan Schmaltz (42 GP, ) anchor the defensive unit. Feeling a Draft North Dakota s roster features an NCAA-leading 14 National Hockey League draft picks, including 2012 first-rounder Jordan Schmaltz (St. Louis). Four of UND s incoming freshmen were selected in the 2013 draft: Keaton Thompson (Anaheim, 3rd round), Gage Ausmus (San Jose, 5th round), Luke Johnson (Chicago, 5th round) and Wade Murphy (7th round, Nashville). Local Flavor Four of UND s eight freshmen have significant local ties. Forward Luke Johnson and defenseman Paul LaDue are both from Grand Forks, while defenseman Gage Ausmus is from neighboring East Grand Forks, Minn., across the Red River. On Nov. 2, Tippett became the winningest coach in Phoenix Coyotes franchise history when he won his 165th game behind the bench, surpassing Bob Francis. Additionally, Anaheim strength coach Sean Skahan (pronounced skane ) is a former UND assistant strength coach, and former UND football letterwinner Mark Chipman is the chairman of True North Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Winnipeg Jets. Soaring in Sochi Former UND All-American Jonathan Toews ( ), now the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, won his second consecutive Olympic gold medal with Canada in February at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Toews opened the scoring in Canada s 3-0 gold medal victory over Sweden, a goal that proved to be the game-winner. He was named the game s No. 2 star by CBC s Hockey Night in Canada. He became the first 2-time gold medalist in UND Athletics history. Canadian goalie Ed Belfour (2002) and American forward Dave Christian (1980) each won one gold medal. Former UND defenseman Brad Pascall ( ), who played with Dave Hakstol at UND, also received a gold medal, serving as the vice-president of hockey operations for Hockey Canada and as a member of Canada s Olympic management committee. Two more former UND All-Americans, Zach Parise ( ) and T.J. Oshie ( ), represented the United States at the Olympics and played in the bronze medal game, falling to Finland. Nickname/Logo The University of North Dakota officially retired its longtime Fighting Sioux nickname and logo prior to the athletics season. UND s varsity athletics teams will operate without an official nickname until at least 2015, when the University will undertake the process of adopting the third official nickname in school history. Until a new nickname is officially adopted, the University s varsity athletics teams will be referred to as the University of North Dakota, North Dakota, or UND. 14 PAGE 14 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES MARCH 18, 2014 Now in his 10th season as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, Dave Hakstol has established himself as one of the most accomplished and well-respected bench bosses in NCAA hockey. The only active Division I coach with a winning record in every season of his career, Hakstol has guided his teams to either an NCAA Frozen Four berth, a conference regular season championship or a conference playoff title in nine of his 10 seasons. Through his first nine seasons as UND head coach, Hakstol has become the third-winningest coach in program history, compiling a (.648) overall record. A six-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year, Hakstol has guided UND to five NCAA Frozen Four appearances, four WCHA Final Five playoff championships, two WCHA regular season titles and has advanced to the NCAA postseason in each of his nine years. He was named WCHA Coach of the Year in Last season Hakstol guided the men s hockey program to its 11th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, the longest active streak in Division I men s hockey. Seniors Danny Kristo and Corban Knight were both named Hobey Baker Award finalists and All-Americans, while sophomore defenseman Nick Mattson distinguished himself in the classroom by earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. UND also reinforced its reputation as the top draw in NCAA Division I men s hockey by leading the nation in average home attendance (11,592), the only program in the country to average better than 10,000 fans per home game. In , Hakstol led an injury-depleted team to an unprecedented third consecutive Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA Final Five champions and was named Inside College Hockey s National Coach of the Year. With eight players missing 110 games due to injury, UND was forced to dress fewer than 18 skaters on 14 occasions, yet went 11-3 in those games, earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional, and advanced to the regional championship game for the sixth time in eight years. In the classroom, senior Brad Eidsness was named WCHA Most Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year while also receiving postgraduate scholarships from the WCHA and NCAA. Hakstol, 35 years old when he was named UND s head men s hockey coach on July 9, 2004, is just the 15th head men s hockey coach in school history and only the program s fourth head coach in the past 44 years. Hakstol, who wore the Kelly Green and White from , is also just the fifth former UND player to also become head coach at North Dakota. Hakstol joined rare company when he took UND to the Frozen Four in his first four seasons as a collegiate head coach, joining Jack Parker and Doug Woog as the only three coaches to accomplish that feat. In Hakstol s first season ( ) as head coach, he led a team with nine seniors to the Frozen Four. In his second season ( ), he led a team with 13 freshmen and just two seniors to the Frozen Four. Three of Hakstol s players garnered All-America honors in : forward Matt Frattin (first team), defenseman Chay Genoway (first team) and goalie Aaron Dell (second team). Frattin, who led the nation with 36 goals, was also a Hobey Baker Award Hobey Hat Trick finalist and the WCHA Player of the Year. He would debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada that same season. Genoway was named the WCHA s Most Outstanding Student-Athlete, while Dell won a school-record 30 games, toppling a 24-year-old record previously held by Hockey Hall of Famer Ed Belfour. The trademark of North Dakota hockey during Hakstol s tenure has been UND s ability to play its best hockey at the most crucial time of the year in the playoffs. During his first nine years, Hakstol has led UND to an overall postseason record of (.714) that includes a WCHA playoff record and 13-9 NCAA playoff mark. UND s 45 combined NCAA and conference playoff wins the last nine seasons are 15 more than any other WCHA team during that time. UND has also furthered its reputation for doing an outstanding job in preparing players for professional hockey careers and careers beyond hockey. Last season, more than 50 products of the program played professionally, including 13 who played in the National Hockey League. Among the 13 was former All-American Jonathan Toews, who captained the Chicago Blackhawks to their second Stanley Cup in the last four years. In the last seven seasons alone, 12 of Hakstol s former UND players have debuted the NHL the year after completing their collegiate careers, including Chay Genoway ( ), Brad Malone ( ), Matt Frattin ( ), Chris VandeVelde ( ), T.J. In , Toews made the jump directly to the NHL s Chicago Blackhawks after playing two years at UND. Toews was 20 years and 79 days old when he assumed the role as Chicago s captain. In , junior defenseman Chay Genoway, was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team. In , 10 UND men s hockey players earned WCHA All-Academic honors, most in the league. In , 11 UND players were named to the WCHA All-Academic team, tying for the WCHA league high. Taking over a tradition-rich program that is synonymous with the word excellence was no small task, but Hakstol s background prepared him for the challenge. Prior to taking over as UND s head coach, the former Fighting Sioux captain was a member of Dean Blais s coaching staff for four seasons and in that stint helped coach the program to a (.662) overall record and (.634) WCHA record. During Hakstol s four years under Blais, UND won two WCHA titles, made three NCAA appearances and finished as the 2001 national runnerup. Named a UND assistant coach on July 1, 2000, Hakstol was elevated to associate head coach in December 2000, and he served as the team s recruiting coordinator in his four seasons working under Blais. Prior to joining the UND staff on July 1, 2000, Hakstol spent four seasons ( ) as the general manager and head coach of the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League, posting winning seasons in his last three seasons. Overall, Hakstol had a record with the Musketeers. He was named the USHL Coach of the Year in , when he led Sioux City to a record.
