Conference games still tied after a five-minute overtime advance to a three-player shootout with the team that wins the shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (SW in the standings). A shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the shootout receives just one point for the tie. The NCHC improved to (.672) in non-conference play this season, best among the six NCAA Division I conferences, with ECAC Hockey second at only a.520 win clip. The NCHC is also now against the WCHA this season and against the Chargers as Colorado College swept UAH to open the season. The Mavericks won their fourth straight game Saturday, the longest active win streak in the NCHC. With the victory, Omaha improved to in non-conference play and at home this season, winning four straight home games as well. UNO is now all-time against Alabama-Huntsville. Omaha junior defenseman Brian Cooper had a hand in both goals Saturday, scoring the first and assisting on the second. It was his second multi-point game this season and just the second of his career. He tallied goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his career, also scoring last Saturday against St. Cloud State, giving him four goals on the season. Sophomore forward Justin Parizek notched the second UNO goal Saturday, which was the game-winner. It was his second game-winner of the season while he scored a goal for a third straight game after scoring in both games against St. Cloud State last weekend. After scoring just once his entire freshman year, Parizek already has eight goals this season. UNO freshman forward Tyler Vesel assisted on both goals for the Mavericks. It was his third career multi-point game and second career multi-assist game as a rookie. The two points tied a career high. His 12 points this year rank him in the top 20 nationally in rookie scoring. Omaha sophomore goaltender Kirk Thompson came within 11 seconds of pitching his first career shutout while he did earn his second win of the season in goal Saturday (also Nov. 8 at Ohio State). He made 24 saves in just his fourth appearance this season while the one goal allowed marked a season low and tied a career low for goals allowed when playing a full game. On Friday night, three NCHC players took the ice as part of Team USA in a pre-world Junior Championship exhibition against Boston University. Denver sophomore defenseman Will Butcher, Miami sophomore forward Anthony Louis and North Dakota freshman forward Nick Schmaltz all tallied an assist in the 5-2 win over the Terriers. Louis assist came on the game-winning goal while Butcher s came short-handed. The trio is competing for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team, with the final roster being announced Dec. 24.

2 Saturday Recaps Omaha Tops Alabama-Huntsville, 2-1, in Series Opener Cooper, Parizek score for Mavs, Thompson makes 24 saves in near shutout Saturday, Dec. 20 No. 12/12 OMAHA 2, ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE 1 OMAHA, Neb. No. 12/12 Omaha received goals from junior defenseman Brian Cooper and sophomore forward Justin Parizek while sophomore goaltender Kirk Thompson nearly pitched a shutout to lead the Mavericks to a 2-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday night at CenturyLink Center. With the victory, Omaha (11-4-2) won its fourth straight game while the Chargers (3-14-2) of the WCHA dropped their sixth straight contest. The game was the only game in the NCAA Saturday. Although the Chargers outshot the Mavs, 10-9, in the opening 20 minutes, Omaha struck first when Cooper scored on the power play with 1:04 to go in the first frame. Freshman forward Tyler Vesel started the play, passing the puck up to Cooper at the point from below the circle. Cooper then fired a shot that deflected off the stick of a Charger player and bounced on the ice before hopping past UAH goalie Carmine Guerriero through a screen. UNO carried its 1-0 lead into the second period, and that s where the score remained through 40 minutes. Omaha was able to put 10 shots on goal in the middle 20 minutes and nearly scored short-handed but Guerriero made a big save to keep it a onegoal game. Thompson stopped all six shots he faced in the second stanza, including helping kill a UAH power play, to keep his shutout intact. In the third period, the Mavericks doubled their lead when Parizek found the back of the net 9:45 into the final frame. Just after a power play expired, Parizek fired a hard wrister from the top of the circle to Guerriero s left that snuck in near post, glove-side for his eighth goal of the season. Vesel collected his second helper of the night while Cooper also earned an assist, holding the puck in the neutral zone to start the play for his second point of the night. With less than a minute to go, UAH pulled Guerriero for an extra attacker and broke up the shutout with 11 ticks remaining when Jeff Vanderlugt fluttered a shot over Thompson s shoulder. Omaha killed off the remaining seconds, however, to seal the 2-1 victory. The Mavericks finished with a advantage in shots on goal, including over the final 40 minutes. Thompson compiled 24 saves and came 11 seconds from his first career shutout but still earned his second win of the season in net. Guerriero totaled 29 saves while suffering the loss. Omaha went 1-for-4 on the power play while killing both Charger power plays. The Mavericks go for a sweep of the Chargers Sunday when the two teams complete their series at 5:07 p.m. CT at CenturyLink Center. Sunday s game will be available on NCHC.tv and is the only game in the NCAA on Sunday. The NCHC vs....
