NCHC teams are now against Hockey East teams this season, the only conference the NCHC does not have a winning record against. The Broncos could pull the NCHC even with a win at Notre Dame Saturday night. WMU is 2-0 this year at Compton Family Ice Arena after winning the Shillelagh Tournament, hosted by Notre Dame, Nov In the first conference games in nearly a month, No. 7/7 Minnesota Duluth took over sole possession of first place in the NCHC with a 4-1 win at No. 1/1 North Dakota. UMD is now in its last 12 games. The Bulldogs scored three goals in the final 8:48 of the game to break a 1-1 tie. Junior forward Tony Cameranesi scored the game-winning goal, his second game-winner of the season, which extended his point streak to six games, tying a career long. UMD freshman goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo earned the win in net with 23 saves, as he improved to on the year after making his 16th straight start in net. His 12 wins lead all rookie goalies in the NCAA, three more than any other freshman, and tie for fifth among all netminders. No. 12/13 Omaha erased a 3-0 deficit in the second period with three goals in less than four minutes and then scored twice in the final 3:12 to overcome a 4-3 hole and beat No. 10/10 Denver 5-4. Senior forward Dominic Zombo tallied the game-winner while freshman forward Avery Peterson had three points (1g, 2a), tying a career high (Nov. 8 at Ohio State). This was Peterson s first multi-assist game. Omaha sophomore forward Austin Ortega (12g, 11a) and Denver freshman forward Danton Heinen (8g, 15a) each had an assist in Friday s game as they now share the NCHC scoring lead with 23 points each. St. Cloud State beat No. 6/5 Miami, 3-1, behind two goals from junior forward David Morley. It was his first multi-goal game since his freshman season and the fourth of his career. Senior forward Joe Rehkamp scored the game-winner in the final frame, his first goal of the year. SCSU sophomore goaltender Charlie Lindgren recorded a career-high 37 saves to get the win in net against Miami. His previous career high was 36 stops Nov. 22 against North Dakota earlier this season. WMU scored the game s final three goals in its win over Notre Dame. Senior forward Justin Kovacs notched the game-winner while freshman forward Willem Nong-Lambert tallied his first career goal, both in the third period.

2 Friday Recaps UMD Tops UND, Omaha Rallies Past DU, SCSU Upsets Miami Broncos win lone non-conference game over Notre Dame Friday, Jan. 9 After no conference games for nearly a month, the return of National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) play Friday lived up to expectations, featuring three exciting games that saw a crazy comeback and two top-five teams fall to conference foes. The NCHC also won its only non-conference game Friday night. In a battle of top-10 teams, No. 7/7 Minnesota Duluth came out on top in the series opener at No. 1/1 North Dakota, taking down top-ranked UND, 4-1, behind a trio of goals in the final nine minutes of the third period. Junior forward Tony Cameranesi s game-winner moved the Bulldogs into sole possession of first place in the NCHC. Just one point behind UMD is No. 12/13 Omaha, which erased a 3-0 deficit to collect a 5-4 win over No. 10/10 Denver and move into second place in the NCHC. Senior forward Dominic Zombo scored the game-winner with 2:13 remaining marking UNO s second goal in the final four minutes of regulation. The team that was tied for first place, No. 6/5 Miami, fell on the road at St. Cloud State, as the Huskies knocked off the Red- Hawks, 3-1, behind a pair of goals from junior forward David Morley. Miami is now in third in the NCHC, three points back of UMD. In the only non-conference game Friday, Western Michigan scored twice in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and earn a 4-2 win over former CCHA rival Notre Dame with senior forward Justin Kovacs notching the game-winner early in the final frame. No. 7/7 MINNESOTA DULUTH 4, No. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA 1 GRAND FORKS, N.D. No. 7/7 Minnesota Duluth scored three goals in the final nine minutes to break a 1-1 tie and earn a 4-1 win over No. 1/1 North Dakota Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena as both teams resumed NCHC play for the first time in a month. With the win, UMD (13-6-0, NCHC) moved into sole possession of first place in the NCHC while UND (13-5-2, NCHC) remained in fourth place. The first period was full of action as both teams had quality scoring changes. North Dakota appeared to get on the board first but after a review, the goal was waved off as UND had a player in the crease interfering with the goaltender. A few minutes later, it looked as though the Bulldogs had jumped in front, tapping in a loose puck, but senior forward Adam Krause made contact with the goalie before his goal as that was also taken off the board after a review. Neither team took advantage of a power play chance in the first frame either as the game was scoreless after 20 minutes. In the second period, a goal finally did stand as UMD went ahead 1-0. Junior forward Cal Decowski started the play with a cross-ice back-hand pass in the offensive zone, which senior forward Justin Crandall attempted to back-hand in the net but he only connected slightly and the puck redirected to the front of the net where sophomore forward Kyle Osterberg buried the loose puck in the slot. UMD had a chance to extend its lead with a power play late in the second stanza but again was unable to convert. With UMD clinging to its one-goal lead, North Dakota finally broke up the shutout 10:05 into the final frame when sophomore defenseman Gage Ausmus left a drop pass for senior forward Connor Gaarder, who ripped a shot from the left circle that snuck past UMD freshman goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo s glove, hit the far post and banked in the net to tie the game. Only 1:07 later however, the Bulldogs went back on top when sophomore defenseman Willie Raskob deked a UND defenseman and then dished to junior forward Tony Cameranesi on the back side for an easy putaway on a one-timer. Another 1:02 later and UMD doubled its lead as a turnover at the UND blue line allowed sophomore defenseman Carson Soucy to carry the puck all the way up ice before firing a wrister from the left circle that beat UND junior goalie Zane McIntyre in the top corner near post for an unassisted tally. With just over two minutes to play, North Dakota pulled McIntyre for the extra attacker but with 14 ticks left UMD sealed the game as sophomore forward Alex Iafallo found the empty net for the 4-1 final. Minnesota Duluth outshot UND, 37-24, for the game, including over the final 40 minutes. Kaskisuo earned the win in net with 23 saves, while McIntyre suffered the loss despite stopping 33 shots. The Bulldogs went 0-for-3 on the power play while UND failed to score on its only power play chance. The two long-time rivals complete their series Saturday at 7 p.m. CT with the game televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. ST. CLOUD STATE 3, No. 6/5 MIAMI 1 ST. CLOUD, Minn. Junior forward David Morley scored two goals and St. Cloud State overcame a slow start to earn a 3-1 win over No. 6/5 Miami Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The victory moved the Huskies (8-10-1, NCHC) into sixth place in the NCHC while snapping the RedHawks (14-7-0, NCHC) three-game winning streak and moving Miami from first to third in the standings. The RedHawks came out firing on all cylinders, controlling play for much of the first period. Miami outshot SCSU, 17-8, over the first 20 minutes, but Huskies sophomore goaltender Charlie Lindgren denied every chance, including help kill a MU power play, as the game was scoreless after one period. The RedHawks did break through 5:06 into the second stanza when junior forward Sean Kuraly grabbed a rebound out wide, circled back toward goal and fired a wrister from the high slot that deflected off a SCSU defenseman and into the net. After killing two penalties, Miami was not able to kill a third straight in the middle period as the Huskies tied the game on Morley s first goal. Junior forward Joey Benik had the puck in the right circle and sent a crossice pass to Morley on the back door for the one-timer power play goal. With the game still tied 1-1 in the third period, SCSU started to take control of the contest. The Huskies grabbed their first lead 4:09 into the final frame when senior defenseman Andrew Prochno sent in a shot from the blue line that was blocked in front of goal, but senior forward Joe Rehkamp grabbed the rebound with his back to goal, spun and scored on a shot in the low slot to make it 2-1. The Huskies then sealed the game with Morley s second tally with 1:37 to play on a give-and-go. Morley chipped the puck down to freshman forward Patrick Russell in the corner, where he back-handed a pass back to a cutting Morley, who beat Miami junior goalie Ryan McKay five-hole from close range to make it 3-1. Despite the loss, Miami did outshoot SCSU, 38-37, but the Huskies outshot the RedHawks, 29-21, over the final 40 minutes. Lindgren totaled a career-high 37 saves to earn the win, recording double-digit saves each frame. McKay stopped 34 shots in the loss for Miami. SCSU finished 1-for-3 on the power play while MU was 0-for-1. The two teams complete their series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT. The game will be available on NCHC.tv. WESTERN MICHIGAN 4, NOTRE DAME 2 KALAMAZOO, Mich. Western Michigan scored the game s final three goals, including two in the third period, to pull away for a 4-2 win over rival Notre Dame Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena in non-conference action. With the win, the Broncos (8-9-2) improved to in their last seven games while avenging a shutout sweep at the hands of the Fighting Irish (9-10-2) last season. 3 Friday Recaps/Inter-Conference Records WMU started strong and grabbed a 1-0 lead 8:33 into the game on a highlight-reel goal from junior forward Colton Hargrove. Hargrove started the play by poking the puck to classmate Nolan LaPorte in neutral ice, creating an odd-man rush. LaPorte carried the puck into the zone and sent a saucer pass back to Hargrove, who dove on his stomach and redirected the puck into the net just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. With 17 seconds left in the first frame, Notre Dame tied it when Vince Hinostroza sent a centering pass from the corner that Mario Lucia redirected in front of net and past WMU junior goalie Lukas Hafner. Only 1:27 into the second stanza, the Irish grabbed the lead when Jordan Gross sent a simple shot from the point that snuck under Hafner, who was screened by traffic in front. The Broncos answered with 3:41 remaining in the middle period when senior forward Will Kessel won a draw cleanly back to senior defenseman Matt Stewart, who quickly sent in a sharp wrister from the top of the left circle that went over ND goalie Cal Petersen s glove and into the corner of the net to make it 2-2. After the teams each controlled a period over the first 40 minutes, the third period belonged to Western Michigan. Just 4:06 into the final frame, WMU took the lead for good when senior forward Justin Kovacs used a nifty move to beat an Irish defenseman entering the zone and then ripped a wrister inside the near post from a sharp angle for a 3-2 Bronco lead. Four minutes later, WMU doubled their lead, cashing in on a Notre Dame turnover. Freshman forward Willem Nong-Lambert grabbed the puck along the half wall in the offensive zone after a giveaway and skated in alone, scoring top shelf on the near side for his first career goal. The Irish pulled Petersen briefly late in the game for an extra attacker, but a slashing call on Gross with 1:33 to go ended any hopes of a Notre Dame comeback. WMU finished with a shots on goal advantage while Hafner compiled 18 saves to earn the win in net. Petersen suffered the loss while making 22 saves. Neither team had success on the power play as they combined to go 0-for-5. The former CCHA foes complete their home-and-home series Saturday in South Bend at 6:05 p.m. ET. The game will be on TV on NBC Sports Network and online at nbcsports.com. No. 12/13 OMAHA 5, No. 10/10 DENVER 4 OMAHA, Neb. Senior forward Dominic Zombo capped a furious third-period rally with a late power play goal to help No. 12/13 Omaha edge No. 10/10 Denver, 5-4, on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center in the first conference action for either team in nearly a month. With the win, UNO (13-5-3, ) moved into second place in the NCHC, while the Pioneers (11-6-1, ) remained in fifth place in the standings. The Mavericks rallied from 3-0 and 4-3 deficits to earn the win. With the game tied at three entering the third period, each team had potential goals waved off by lengthy video reviews. Denver finally retook the lead when senior forward Matt Tabrum s wrist shot from just inside the blue line fooled UNO sophomore goalie Kirk Thompson. The goal, with just under 10 minutes left in the game, was his first of the season. The Mavericks answered however, tying the game during a delayed penalty. Freshman forward David Pope scooped up a pass from classmate Avery Peterson, curled the net and slipped a wrist shot past DU sophomore goaltender Evan Cowley with 3:12 remaining in regulation. On the ensuing power play, freshman defenseman Luc Snuggerud threw the puck on goal from the left point. Cowley made the save, but the puck fell at his knees. Before he could find it, Zombo crashed the net, poking the puck between Cowley s pads for the game-winner and his fifth goal of the season just 59 seconds after Pope s tying goal and with only 2:13 left on the clock. Freshman netminder Brock Crossthwaite, who was inserted for Thompson following Tabrum s goal, picked up his first collegiate win with five saves in 9:58 of work. His best was on a one-timer by senior forward Daniel Doremus on a power play just after Denver had retaken the lead. The Pioneers opened the scoring just 2:40 into the game. Doremus beat Thompson through a screen for his fifth goal of the season. Denver doubled its lead after weathering two UNO power plays. Freshman forward Danton Heinen hit sophomore forward Matt Marcinew in the open on the left wing and he wristed the puck past Thompson at 17:21 of the opening period. Early in the second stanza, senior forward Zac Larraza added his sixth goal of the year to put Denver up 3-0. But the momentum turned, ironically, off a timeout taken by DU coach Jim Montgomery following an icing. Not long after, the Mavericks finally solved Cowley off a turnover. A pass behind the net bounced off the leg of senior defenseman Joey LaLeggia to the slot. Peterson, who tallied three points in the win, pounced on it and fired home his sixth goal of the season at 14:09 of the period, unassisted. Less than three minutes later, the Mavericks closed the gap to one goal. Sophomore forward Austin Ortega threw the puck into the feet of a Denver defenseman. The puck ricocheted out to classmate Jake Guentzel, who zipped a shot over Cowley s shoulder for his seventh goal of the year to make it 3-2 with 2:52 left in the middle period. Sophomore forward Jono Davis then evened the game just 45 seconds later. From below the goal line, he fired the puck into Cowley s feet and it caromed in for his first collegiate goal. Peterson finished with a goal and two assists while Guentzel had an assist to go with his goal. Snuggerud finished with two assists. Denver did outshoot UNO, 28-27, but Thompson and Crossthwaite combined for 24 saves (19 from Thompson). Cowley made 22 saves in the loss. The Mavericks went 1-for-3 against the NCHC s best penalty kill while holding DU to no goals on two power plays. The series concludes on Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT with the game available on NCHC.tv.
