Besides capturing the school s first NCAA championship three years ago, his Bulldogs have won 22 or more games in four of the last five seasons while advancing to four NCAA tournaments (24, 29, 2 and 22), two Frozen Fours (24 and 2) and seven of the past Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Five playoff events. He has also helped produce a pair of Hobey Baker Memorial Award winners (Jack Connolly in 2-2 and Junior Lessard in 2-4), six NCAA All-Americans and 7 different All-WCHA selections. Sandelin has also seen 2- NCAA Champions Home of 5 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners

2 6 of his UMD pupils go on to do time in the National Hockey League, with the latest being winger Justin Fontaine earlier this season (Minnesota Wild). During the course of the 2-2 season, the Bulldogs set a team record by going unbeaten in 7 straight games and were ranked first in both major weekly polls (USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine for a program-best nine consecutive weeks. In March 29, UMD became the first play-in game participant to ever claim the Final Five title and, later that spring, strung together a school-record six-game postseason winning streak before it fell to Miami University 2- in the NCAA West Regional final. Nine years ago, Sandelin, 49, turned UMD into a NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly a generation, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were overall) and highest WCHA finish (second place on a mark) since For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., native was chosen the WCHA Coach of the Year as well as the national coach of the year by both insidecollegehockey.com and uscho.com. In 22-, Sandelin s charges went overall and captured fifth place in the WCHA with a 4--4 mark while experiencing the greatest one-season turnaround of any league member that winter. One year earlier, he guided UMD to a -24- record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of victories from the previous season (7-28-4). Sandelin officially signed on with the Bulldogs on March, 2 following six years of assistant coaching deployment at North Dakota (which won two NCAA titles during his tenure). Prior to that, Sandelin spent the season as the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the previous winter with the American Hockey Association s Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year playing career at North Dakota in by being named one of finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. An All-WCHA first team pick and an All-American second team selection as a senior, Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional hockey, which included National Hockey League stints with the Montreal Canadiens (986-88), The Numbers on Sandelin YEAR Totals Philadelphia Flyers (99-9) and Minnesota North Stars (99-92). Sandelin, one of just two active National Collegiate Hockey Conference coaches to do time in the NHL, was the Montreal Canadiens second-round pick in the 982 NHL draft (4th choice overall). He served as Team USA s head coach at the 25 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, directing that club to a fourth-place finish, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. entry at that same event in 2-2. The 22- WCHA Coach of the Year, Mike Hastings is in his second year at the Minnesota State helm and has a record to show for it, including a 2-- lifetime mark versus UMD. Last winter, he guided the Mavericks to their second NCAA playoff berth ever and their first upper division WCHA finish in five years (tied for fourth place). Hastings joined the Maverick program in April 22, fresh off a three-year associate head coaching stint at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. THE RIVALRY: Friday afternoon s bout will mark the 49th meeting ever between UMD and MInnesota State. The Bulldogs hold a lead in the rivalry, which began back on Oct. 7, 997 in Duluth and are unbeaten in six of their last eight confrontations against the Mavericks (5-2-). Minnesota State did, however, sweep the Bulldogs in the two clubs lone WCHA series one year ago (4-2 and 5- on Feb. 8-9 in Duluth.) LAST WEEKEND: The Bulldogs and then 6th-ranked Denver were involved in a pair of overtime decisions last weekend at AMSOIL Arena. The Pioneers took the opener, -2, scoring with just 46 seconds remaining in the extra session, before the two long-time rivals settled for a 2-2 deadlock the next night. That game, played before a record UMD home crowd of 6,889, featured the first NCHC shootout ever for the Bulldogs, who went on to pick up the extra point (outscoring the Pioneers, 2-, in four rounds). Junior center Caleb Herbert and sophomore center Tony Cameranesi accounted for the UMD goals Friday while rookie left winger Alex Iafallo scored twice in the rematch (both off centering feeds from junior right winger Adam Krause). Senior goaltender Aaron Crandall turned aside 6 of 65 shots over the weekend in just under minutes of work. Minnesota State swept No. 2 Ferris State University in a two-game WCHA home set, following up a convincing 6-2 triumph on Friday with a 4- win the next night. Senior forward Johnny McInnis racked up three goals (including a pair of game-winners) and one assist and also put 6 shots on net en route to securing WCHA Ofensive Player of the Week honors. NCHC FORECAST: In the inaugural NCHC Preseason Media Poll, UMD was projected for a sixth-place finish in the upstart league this winter while Miami University received top billing among the conference s eight schools with 5 points and seven first-place votes. The RedHawks were followed by North Dakota 2- NCAA Champions Home of 5 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners

AYE, AYE CAPTAIN: Senior right winger Joe Basaraba and junior right winger Adam Krause have both been entrusted with team captaincy responsibilities for the Bulldogs in this, their 7th season of intercollegiate hockey. That occurred last year at the Florida College Hockey Classic in Estero, Fla.(- to the University of Maine and 6-2 to Ferris State on Dec , 22). TOURNEY TIDBITS II: The last time UMD laid claim to a regular season tournament title was in 2-2 when it launched that season with successive victories over host Nebraska-Omaha (5-2) and the University of Michigan (-2) on is way to capturing the Maverick Stampede championship. YOU RE KILLING ME: UMD will enter the weekend possessing the fifth-best penalty kill efficiency rating in the country (88.6 percent) while Minnesota State ranked third (89.). Over the past seven games, the Bulldogs have given up just one power play goal (opponents are -for-29 with the man advantage during that stretch).. HITTING HIS STRIDE: Sophomore Andy Welinski, a 22- WCHA All-Rookie Team selection, picked up an assist in both ends of the Denver series to push his scoring streak to a career-high seven games. UMD s eight defenseman have collectively scored just two goals (to go with 29 assists) this winter and Welinkski has both of them. OHH-VERTIME: Since besting visiting Minnesota State -2 in double overtime in the opening round of the 22 WCHA Playoffs, UMD is --7 in extra session games (--2 this winter). No current Bulldog has an overtime goal to his collegiate credit. THERE S NO PLACE LIKE ROAD: The Bulldogs have compiled a 6-4- road record this season (compared to a -5-2 home mark) and are averaging nearly a goal a game more away from AMSOIL Arena (.2) than they are at home (2.). UMD has won four of its last five road assignments, including three straight heading into Friday night. THERE S NO PLACE LIKE ROAD II: All but four of rookie left winger Alex Iafallo s team-leading 5 points this season have been registered in an opponent s arena. 4 attempt last Saturday night against Denver. The Eden, N.Y, product is one of six Bulldogs to skate in all 2 games to date. The Bulldogs are just -7- on Friday nights this season but have lost only twice in Saturday/ Sunday engagements. Aaron Crandall has started four consecutive games in goal for the Bulldogs and during that time the fifth year senior has gone 2-- with a.92 goals against average and a.949 saves percentage. Two weeks ago in his last outing away from AMSOIL Arena (Jan. ), the fifth-year senior made 52 stops while backstopping the Bulldogs to a 2- win at Nebraska-Omaha. In the process, he became the first UMD goaltender to eclipse the 5-stop plateau since March, 27 (Josh Johnson with 62 saves in a -2 triple overtime WCHA playoff loss at St. Cloud State) and the first to do so in a regulation win in almost 5 years. (Bill Perkl had 5 stops in UMD s 8-7 road triumph over Wisconsin on Nov. 9, 979). Crandall currently ranks sixth in three different categories among NCHC netminders -- goals against average (2.64), saves percentage (.92) and winning percentage (.56 off a 7-6- record) Going back to a 5-4 home loss to Minnesota on Oct. 5, 2, the Bulldogs are unbeaten in the 8 games that they ve struck for four or more goals (4--4) That includes a 9--2 mark last winter and a 5-- record in 2-4. Junior right winger Justin Crandall has established a career-best for goals this season with eight, a NCHCleading six of which have come on the power play. The Bulldogs are still in search of their first shorthanded goal at AMSOIL Arena, which opened its doors for business on Dec., 2 and has hosted 59 UMD games thus far. Overall, UMD has generated three shorties over the past three seasons with two of those coming at Michigan Tech University (by current junior Adam Krause on Nov., his first tally at UMD -- and by Keegan Flaherty on Dec. 2, 2) and the other by rookie Dominic Toninato in UMD s 6-2 thrashing of Minnesota on Nov. 24, 2. Over that same period, the Bulldogs have been scored on seven times while a man up, including once this season. Toninato is the lone NCHC freshman with a shorthanded goal this season. UMD is -6- against nationally-ranked opponents in 2-4 with those wins coming against No. Minnesota (6-2 on Nov. 24 in Minneapolis, Minn.), No. 2 Notre Dame (5- on Oct. 26 in Duluth) and No. North Dakota (6- on Nov. 6 in Grand Forks, N.D.) Krause has now played in 74 straight games -- the longest active ironman streak on the club The seven-member Bulldog freshmen class has collectively racked up 2 goals and assists for 52 points -- the best rookie output among any NCHC club outfit and the ninth highest total nationally. Leading the charge is Alex Iafallo (5 pts), fellow left winger Kyle Osterberg, October s NCHC Rookie of the Month and UMD s fourth leading scorer ( points on six goals and five assists), and center Dominic Toninato (tied for eighth with nine points). Dominic Toninato is part of the th father-son combination to skate for the Bulldogs. Dominic s dad, Jim Toninato, was a four-year winger/center (982-86) at UMD. Junior defenseman Derik Johnson s father, Jim Johnson, is also a UMD hockey alumnus (98-85) and now an assistant coach with the National Hockey League s San Jose Sharks. Derik Johnson has blocked more shots this winter (, including a UMD seasonbest eight against Western Michigan on Dec. 4) than any other Bulldog. UMD has outscored the opposition 2-2 in the first period this season and has trailed at the first intermission on just five occasions all year. Among NCHC teams, only St. Cloud State (with 2) and Miami (22) has amassed more goals in the opening 2 minutes of play this year than the Bulldogs. The last time the Bulldogs overcame a secondintermission deficit to win was on Nov., 2 when they erased a 2- Michigan Tech University advantage by scoring four goals in the final 2 minutes to upend the Huskies 5- at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. UMD is -4- in that situation since then (-8- in 2-4). 2- NCAA Champions Home of 5 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners

5 Senior winger/center Max Tardy has not picked up either a goal or an assist since Jan. 2, 2. That 5-game pointless drought is second longest of any active Bulldog. Senior defenseman Tim Smith is mired in a 6-game skid. 2-4 BULLDOG SALUTATIONS Tim Smith is a team-leading + for his career while rookie winger Kyle Osterberg tops the 2-4 Bulldogs in that department at +. UMD s average home attendance thus far (6,24 per night) is the sixth highest in the country. In his two road appearances this season, sophomore netminder Matt McNeely is -- and has compiled a.92 saves percentage compared to an.875 mark in four outings at the AMSOIL Arena (where he is -2-). Freshman winger Sammy Spurrel leads UMD in shooting percentage this winter, scoring on three of the 2 shots he s put on net this season (a.25 mark) The Bulldogs have gotten on the board first in 4 of their 2 engagements thus far and are 9--2 when they ve done so. This Friday will be the Bulldogs first visit to the Xcel Energy Center since the 22 WCHA Final Five Tournament semifinals (a 4- double-overtime setback to Denver on March 6). UMD is 9-6- lifetime at that downtown St. Paul facility. ON DECK: UMD will be in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Jan. -Feb. for its second NCHC series of the season with Western Michigan University.
