In March 9, UM became the first play-in game participant to ever claim the Final Five title and, later that spring, strung together a school-record six-game postseason winning streak before it fell to Miami University - in the NCAA est Regional final. Nine years ago, Sandelin, 49, turned UM into a NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly a generation, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were 8--4 overall) and highest CHA finish (second place on a 9-7- mark) since For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., native was chosen the CHA Coach of the Year as well as the national coach of the year by both insidecollegehockey.com and uscho.com. In -, Sandelin s charges went -5-5 overall and captured fifth place in the CHA with a 4--4 mark while experiencing the greatest one-season turnaround of any league member that winter. One year earlier, he guided UM to a -4- record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of victories from the previous season (7-8-4). Sandelin officially signed on with the Bulldogs on March, following six years of assistant coaching deployment at North akota (which won two NCAA titles during his tenure). Prior to that, Sandelin spent the season as the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the previous winter with the American Hockey Association s Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year playing career at North akota in by being named one of finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. An All-CHA first team pick and an AllAmerican second team selection as a senior, Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional hockey, which included National Hockey League stints with the Montreal Canadiens (986-88), Philadelphia Flyers (99-9) and Minnesota North Stars (99-9). Sandelin, one of just two active National Collegiate Hockey Conference coaches to do time in the NHL, was the Montreal Canadiens second-round pick in The Numbers on Sandelin YEAR Totals the 98 NHL draft (4th choice overall). He served as Team USA s head coach at the 5 International Ice Hockey Federation orld Junior Championships, directing that club to a fourth-place finish, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. entry at that same event in -. on Lucia (University of Notre ame, 98) is 58-6 in his 5 seasons at the Minnesota helm and directed the Gophers to a pair of NCAA championships ( and ), four CHA regular season championships and three CHA playoff titles. Prior to his appointment with the Gophers, Lucia served a six-year head coaching stint at Colorado College where his Tigers laid claim to three CHA regular season crowns (99-96) and posted a mark. The Grand Rapids, Minn., native also was employed for six additional seasons (987-9) as head coach at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. He fashions a collegiate coaching record and is 5-6 all-time against UM (5-6-6 at Minnesota, -4- at Colorado College and -- while with the Alaska-Fairbanks program). 4 uring that same stretch, UM has been scored on seven times while a man up. Krause is the only - 4 Bulldog with a shorthanded goal to his collegiate credit. UM has also yet to score on the penalty kill at AMSOIL Arena, its home for 5 games since opening on ec.,. BULLOG BITS: It s been almost a half century since UM and Minnesota last collided in a non-conference series. On Feb. 5-6, 965, the host Gophers swept the Bulldogs (9- and 5-), who were competing in their fourth, and final, year as a NCAA I independent. UM joined the CHA the following season (as its first expansion team) and became league partners with Minnesota. The six goals the Bulldogs rolled up last Saturday night were their most against North akota since a 7- blanking on Feb. 8, 998 at the ECC. The last time North akota gave up that many goals to a visiting UM team was on Feb., 965 (7-5). All but one of Alex Iafallo s team-leading points this season have been registered on the road. UM has butted heads with Minnesota on more occasions () than all but two opponents -- Michigan Tech (4) and North akota () -- during its 7- year history. In addition, the Bulldogs have also met both the Gophers and Michigan Tech at least once on an annual basis since the 96-6 season, making each UM s longest continuous rivalry. After being kept off the scoresheet in the first four games of his collegiate career, rookie defenseman illie Raskob has accumulated six points (all assists) in the five outings since. The former Shattuck-St. Mary s standout will bring a three-game scoring streak into this weekend s series with Minnesota. The Bulldogs blocked a season-high shots last Friday in their 4- setback at North akota and six of those blocks (another -4 UM best) were recorded by sophomore defenseman illie Corrin. Junior co-captain Adam Krause has now played in 64 straight games -- the top ironman streak on the club. Rookie center ominic Toninato is part of the th father-son combination to skate for the Bulldogs. ominic s dad, Jim Toninato, was a four-year winger/ center (98-86) at UM. Junior defenseman erik Johnson s father, Jim Johnson, is also a UM hockey alumnus (98-85) and now an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks. The Bulldogs are -- in rematch games this season and have averaged.6 goals per outing. In contrast, they are -- on Friday nights while scoring at a. goals a game clip. Senior defenseman Tim Smith leads all -4 Bulldogs in plus-minus rating (+8) and is a teamleading +7 for his career. UM s last shutout against Minneapolis came on Feb., 97. Goaltender Jerome Mrazek stopped a whopping 5 shots in backstopping the Bulldogs to an 8- win that night.
