Junior forward Josh Archibald scored the overtime game-winners both nights, earning NCHC Offensive Player of the Week honors in the process. Archibald, the son of former UND forward Jim Archibald ( ), leads the Mavericks with six goals and is tied for the team lead with 10 points. Freshman forward Jake Guentzel was named NCHC Rookie of the Week after assisting on both of Archibald s overtime goals. Guentzel leads the NCHC in rookie scoring with seven points. UNO Coaching Staff Head coach Dean Blais (Minnesota 73) is in his fifth year behind the UNO bench and owns a (.518) record with the Mavericks. A two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA s Coach of the Year Award, Blais has posted a career coaching record of (.633). He coached UND to national championships in and Blais staff includes assistant coaches Troy Jutting (Minnesota State 87) and Alex Todd (Union 01). Series History UND has won five of the eight previous meetings between the two schools, including each of the last three. Last season, UND picked up a road sweep over the Mavericks, winning 2-1 and 5-2. The series finale was played outdoors at TD Ameritrade Park, the home of the NCAA s College World Series. Zane Gothberg started both of those games for UND, stopping 62 of 65 shots for a.954 save percentage. No current UND skater has more than two career points against the Mavericks. Poll Position UND was ranked No. 11 in the most recent USCHO.com poll and No. 10 in the latest USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, which were released on Monday. Nebraska Omaha was unranked in both but received votes in the USCHO poll. Refer to Page 8 for complete poll information. St. Clair Out Sophomore forward Colten St. Clair (Gilbert, Ariz.) will not play this weekend and is expected to remain sidelined for approximately six weeks with a lower body injury. St. Clair had one goal in five games this season and was a regular member of UND s penalty killing unit. Last season as a freshman, St. Clair had three goals and four assists in 40 games. Last Week UND suffered its first home sweep in four years when it fell last weekend to No. 9 St. Cloud State, losing 3-2 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. SCSU junior goalie Ryan Faragher stopped 45 of 48 shots in the series to earn NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors. Forwards Drake Caggiula (So., Pickering, Ontario) and Mark MacMillan (Jr., Penticton, British Columbia) scored UND s goals on Friday, while freshman defenseman Troy Stecher (Richmond, British Columbia) scored the lone goal on Saturday, the first of his career. Sophomore goalie Zane Gothberg (Thief River Falls, Minn.) started both games and turned aside 53 of 59 shots. Kill or Be Killed A bright spot for UND last weekend was the continued play of its penalty killing unit, which went a perfect 5-for-5 in the series against St. Cloud State. Since that time, UND has successfully killed 28 consecutive opponent power plays. If the two exhibition games are included, UND has killed 39 of 40 shorthanded situations this season. Cagg-Ooh-La-La Drake Caggiula s (So., Pickering, Ontario) highlight-reel goal last Friday against SCSU received national attention later that night when it was named the top play on FOX Sports Live.

Caggiula is tied for the team lead in both goals (3) and points (5) through the first six games of the season. A Rare Rut Following last weekend s sweep at the hands of St. Cloud State, UND is stuck in its first 3-game losing skid since last October. UND has not lost four straight games since December The last time UND was swept at home was Jan , 2010 against Denver. Stech Artist Freshman defenseman Troy Stecher (Richmond, British Columbia) figured in on all three of North Dakota s goals last weekend. On Friday night, he assisted on both goals for the first multi-point game of his career. The following night, Stecher scored a power-play goal for his first collegiate goal. With four points (1G, 3A) in four conference games, Stecher is tied for the NCHC rookie scoring lead with UNO s Jake Guentzel. Crowded House UND has played before a capacity crowd in each of its six games this season, including four at home. After playing before sold-out crowds of 11,828 (Friday) and 11,962 (Saturday) last weekend against St. Cloud State, UND once again leads NCAA Division I men s hockey in average attendance at 11,829.5 fans per game. Minnesota ranks second at 9, UND led NCAA Division I men s hockey in home attendance in , averaging 11,592 fans in its 21 home games, the only program in the country to average better than 10,000 fans per home game. Parks Productivity Junior forward Michael Parks (St. Louis, Mo.) leads the NCHC in scoring with five points (1G, 4A) through four conference games. Parks is already more than halfway to the eight points (7G, 1A) he scored in 25 games during an injury-riddled sophomore campaign. Rally Rarity St. Cloud State achieved a rare feat last Friday when it overcame a 1-0 deficit after two periods in an eventual 3-2 win. Prior to that game, UND had lost just six of its last 107 games when leading after two periods, going since : UND When Leading After 2 Periods Year Record Totals Tippetting Point Former UND standout Dave Tippett ( to ) became the winningest coach in Phoenix Coyotes franchise history last Saturday night with a 3-2 shootout win over San Jose. Tippett, who took over in Phoenix in 2009, won his 165th game to surpass the previous record held by Bob Francis. Tippett won the Jack Adams Award in 2010 as the NHL s Coach of the Year. A native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Tippett was a member of UND s 1982 NCAA championship team and collected 87 points (28G, 59A) in 79 career games. He went on to enjoy an 11-year playing career in the NHL, playing in 721 career games with Hartford, Washington, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. National Parks Junior forward Michael Parks (St. Louis, Mo.) ensured his name will be a part of NCHC history when he scored the first goal in the firstever NCHC game on Oct. 18 at Miami. Parks history-making goal came at 7:55 of the first period of an eventual 4-2 North Dakota victory. O Captain! My Captain! Senior defenseman Dillon Simpson (Edmonton, Alberta) was named team captain prior to the season, while junior forwards Michael Parks (St. Louis, Mo.) and Stephane Pattyn (Ste. Anne, Manitoba) were chosen assistant captains. At 20 years, 7 months, 26 days, Simpson is UND s youngest captain since Greg Johnson in and is the 10th-youngest captain in program history. Dave Hudson holds the distinction of being the young captain in program history. He was 19 years, 10 months and 17 days when the season began. Pipe Dream UND returns a pair of veterans between the pipes in senior Clarke Saunders (Brockville, Ontario) and sophomore Zane Gothberg (Thief River Falls, Minn.). UND allowed a WCHA-low 2.12 goals per game over that season-ending stretch. Famous Dave UND head coach Dave Hakstol, now in his 10th season behind the bench of his alma mater, is the only active head coach in Division I men s hockey who has recorded a winning record in every season as a head coach. With 237 career victories behind the bench, head coach Dave Hakstol is approaching his predecessor, Dean Blais, as the secondwinningest coach in UND history. Blais amassed 262 victories from 1994 to 2004, to trail only John Gino Gasparini s 392 wins from Hakstol played for Gasparini at UND and coached alongside Blais as an assistant coach from Conference Call The campaign marks UND s first year as a member of the brand new National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). Many Happy Returns Tenth-year head coach Dave Hakstol returns 18 letterwinners from last year s team that went ( WCHA) and advanced to the NCAA West Region championship game. Sophomore Rocco Grimaldi (40 GP, ) and junior Mark MacMillan (42 GP, ) are the team s top returning scorers, while Simpson (42 GP, ), junior Nick Mattson (38 GP, ) and sophomore Jordan Schmaltz (42 GP, ) anchor the defensive unit. Feeling a Draft North Dakota s roster features an NCAA-leading 15 National Hockey League draft picks, including 2012 first-rounder Jordan Schmaltz (St. Louis). UND had six players (including five incoming freshmen) selected in the 2013 draft, which was the most of any NCAA school. The five incoming draft picks include Adam Tambellini (New York Rangers, 3rd round), Keaton Thompson (Anaheim, 3rd round), Gage Ausmus (San Jose, 5th round), Luke Johnson (Chicago, 5th round), Wade Murphy (7th round, Nashville). Local Flavor Four of UND s eight freshmen have significant local ties. Forward Luke Johnson and defenseman Paul LaDue are both from Grand Forks, while defenseman Gage Ausmus is from neighboring East Grand Forks, Minn., across the Red River. Additionally, defenseman Keaton Thompson hails from Devils Lake, N.D. The last time UND had at least three North Dakotans on its roster was : Mario Lamoureux (Grand Forks), Jake Marto (Grand Forks) and Aaron Walski (Fargo). Bleeding Green Every member of UND s coaching staff played at and graduated from the University of North Dakota. Head coach Dave Hakstol ( ), assistant coaches Brad Berry ( ) and Dane Jackson ( ), and volunteer assistant Karl Goehring ( ) each played for the Fighting Sioux. Additionally, nearly every member of the program s support staff is also a graduate of UND, including director of hockey operations Patrick Swanson (2002), athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach Mark Poolman (1992), team physician Dr. Greg Greek (1977) and media relations director Jayson Hajdu (2000). Pro-Files Former UND captain Chris Porter was recalled by the St. Louis Blues last week, giving UND 10 NHLers so far this season. Nine other UND products made National Hockey League opening-night rosters, more than any other National Collegiate Hockey Conference school. Those nine include Matt Frattin (Los Angeles), Matt Greene (Los Angeles), Brian Lee (Tampa Bay), Brock Nelson (New York Islanders), T.J. Oshie (St. Louis), Zach Parise (Minnesota), Drew Stafford (Buffalo), Jonathan Toews (Chicago), Travis Zajac (New Jersey). Toews captained the Blackhawks to their second Stanley Cup in four years in while receiving the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL s Best Defensive Forward. Greene, Oshie, Parise and Zajac each serve as assistant captains for their respective clubs. Last season, 13 UND products played at least one game in the NHL. Three other former UND standouts currently serve on NHL coaching staffs, including Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett, Phoenix video coach Steve Peters and Minnesota assistant coach Rick Wilson. Last Saturday night, Tippett became the winningest coach in Phoenix Coyotes franchise history when he won his 165th game behind the bench, surpassing Bob Francis. 12 PAGE 12 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES NOVEMBER 6, 2013 Now in his 10th season as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, Dave Hakstol has established himself as one of the most accomplished and well-respected bench bosses in NCAA hockey. The only active Division I coach with a winning record in every season of his career, Hakstol has guided his teams to either an NCAA Frozen Four berth, a conference regular season championship or a conference playoff title in nine of his 10 seasons. Through his first nine seasons as UND head coach, Hakstol has become the third-winningest coach in program history, compiling a (.648) overall record. A six-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year, Hakstol has guided UND to five NCAA Frozen Four appearances, four WCHA Final Five playoff championships, two WCHA regular season titles and has advanced to the NCAA postseason in each of his nine years. He was named WCHA Coach of the Year in Last season Hakstol guided the men s hockey program to its 11th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, the longest active streak in Division I men s hockey. Seniors Danny Kristo and Corban Knight were both named Hobey Baker Award finalists and All-Americans, while sophomore defenseman Nick Mattson distinguished himself in the classroom by earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. UND also reinforced its reputation as the top draw in NCAA Division I men s hockey by leading the nation in average home attendance (11,592), the only program in the country to average better than 10,000 fans per home game. In , Hakstol led an injury-depleted team to an unprecedented third consecutive Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA Final Five champions and was named Inside College Hockey s National Coach of the Year. With eight players missing 110 games due to injury, UND was forced to dress fewer than 18 skaters on 14 occasions, yet went 11-3 in those games, earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional, and advanced to the regional championship game for the sixth time in eight years. In the classroom, senior Brad Eidsness was named WCHA Most Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year while also receiving postgraduate scholarships from the WCHA and NCAA. Hakstol, 35 years old when he was named UND s head men s hockey coach on July 9, 2004, is just the 15th head men s hockey coach in school history and only the program s fourth head coach in the past 44 years. Hakstol, who wore the Kelly Green and White from , is also just the fifth former UND player to also become head coach at North Dakota. Hakstol joined rare company when he took UND to the Frozen Four in his first four seasons as a collegiate head coach, joining Jack Parker and Doug Woog as the only three coaches to accomplish that feat. Frattin, who led the nation with 36 goals, was also a Hobey Baker Award Hobey Hat Trick finalist and the WCHA Player of the Year. He would debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada that same season. Genoway was named the WCHA s Most Outstanding Student-Athlete, while Dell won a school-record 30 games, toppling a 24-year-old record previously held by Hockey Hall of Famer Ed Belfour. The trademark of North Dakota hockey during Hakstol s tenure has been UND s ability to play its best hockey at the most crucial time of the year in the playoffs. During his first nine years, Hakstol has led UND to an overall postseason record of (.714) that includes a WCHA playoff record and 13-9 NCAA playoff mark. UND s 45 combined NCAA and conference playoff wins the last nine seasons are 15 more than any other WCHA team during that time.
