Series History UND leads the all-time series (.536), although the Pioneers took four of six points from the host Fighting Hawks back in November. This will be the third NCHC Frozen Faceoff matchup between the two programs, with both previous meetings coming in the league s third-place game. UND and DU skated to a 1-1 overtime tie last year, while DU claimed a 5-1 win in the 2015 tournament. The two teams met 25 times in the conference playoffs as longtime WCHA rivals, with UND going (.540). Poll Position UND climbed to No. 11 in both the latest USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, released on Monday. Denver remained the nation s top-ranked team in both polls. As of Tuesday morning, UND held the 11th spot in the PairWise Rankings and the Pioneers were No. 1. Please refer to Page 3 for complete rankings and poll information. Last Action North Dakota advanced out of the NCHC Quarterfinals with a sweep of No. 20 St. Cloud State. UND won 5-2 on Friday and 6-5 in overtime on Saturday. Five different goal-scorers found the net on Friday for UND, while Cam Johnson (Jr., Troy, Mich.) stopped 26 of 28 shots, allowing only a pair of power-play goals. Junior Trevor Olson (Duluth, Minn.) scored the overtime winner on Saturday after sophomore defenseman Christian Wolanin (Detroit, Mich.) had tied the game at 5-5 with 4:02 remaining in regulation. The two teams combined for five goals in the third period alone on Saturday. Frozen Faceoff Facts UND is playing in its conference tournament for the 15th straight season, the longest active streak of any NCHC program. The last time UND failed to advance to the conference semifinals was in , when it was swept in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs by eventual national champion Minnesota. UND has lost in the semifinals in each of the first three years of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. The Fighting Hawks are 8-1 all-time in the NCHC Quarterfinals but just at the Frozen Faceoff. UND is this season against the rest of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff field, going vs. Denver, vs. Minnesota Duluth and vs. Western Michigan. UND won 11 playoff titles as a member of the WCHA, most recently winning three straight Broadmoor Trophies from Tourney Tidbits The Fighting Hawks are looking to secure their 15th straight NCAA Tournament berth, which would extend the second-longest streak in the history of Division I men s hockey: MOST CONSECUTIVE NCAA TOURN. Johnson is in those 10 starts with a 2.07 goals against average and.917 save percentage. Four-Play The four-goal mark has proven to be vital to UND s fortunes once again this year. UND is unbeaten at when scoring four or more goals in a game and has gone just when failing to reach the 4-goal plateau. Last season, UND went when scoring four times and when failing to do so. Gardner s Specialty When sophomore Rhett Gardner (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) opened the scoring last Friday night with his seventh goal of the season, it was just his second at even strength all year. Gardner also has three power-play goals and a team-leading two short-handed tallies this season. Gardner has scored half of his 18 career goals on special teams: five on the power play and four while shorthanded. Hit Me With Your Best Shot North Dakota is giving up an average of just shots per game this season, a number that ranks second nationally behind only Michigan Tech (23.02). UND ranks sixth nationally in both shots-ongoal differential (+323) and shots-on-goal differential per game (+8.73). Fancy Stats North Dakota also fares well nationally in a variety of advanced stats. The Fighting Hawks rank second in the nation in total Corsi (57.3%), trailing only Penn State (60.8). UND also ranks third in power-play Corsi (59.4%), fourth in even-strength Corsi (56.8%), and seventh in close Corsi (56.2%). Source: College Hockey News. Corsi measures the percentage of shot attempts by a team compared to that of its opponents. Close Corsi involves only tied or one-goal situations. 14 PAGE 14 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA GAME NOTES MARCH 13, 2017 BRAD BERRY Head Coach Years at UND: 11th Years as Head Coach: 2nd Hometown: Bashaw, Alberta Alma Mater: North Dakota ( 02) Few individuals have ever had more impact in their first year at the helm of a program than North Dakota men s hockey coach Brad Berry, who became the first person in the history of NCAA Division I men s hockey to lead his team to a national title in his first year as head coach. The former National Hockey League defenseman and coach masterfully guided his alma mater to the program s eighth national championship in his debut season, bringing to a halt a 16-year drought for the storied program. Berry and the Fighting Hawks went , establishing a team record for most wins by a rookie head coach, and their.818 winning percentage was the second best in program history. Berry also led North Dakota to its second straight Penrose Cup as National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular-season champion, resulting in NCHC Herb Brooks Coach of the Year honors. He also garnered national coach of the year honors from U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) and was one of eight finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given to the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Coach of the Year. Four of Berry s players forwards Brock Boeser and Drake Caggiula, defenseman Troy Stecher, and goaltender Cam Johnson earned All-America honors, joining UND s team as the only entries in school history to boast four All-Americans. Following the season, eight players signed professional contracts: Caggiula (Edmonton Oilers), Stecher (Vancouver Canucks), Paul LaDue (Los Angeles Kings), Keaton Thompson (Anaheim Ducks), Nick Schmaltz (Chicago Blackhawks), Luke Johnson (Chicago Blackhawks), Bryn Chyzyk (AHL s Rockford IceHogs) and Coltyn Sanderson (ECHL s Orlando Solar Bears). Highly-regarded within the hockey world as an outstanding recruiter and teacher, Berry boasts a wealth of coaching and playing experience at the professional, collegiate and international levels. Berry was named head coach at North Dakota on May 18, 2015, becoming the 16th head coach in program history and the sixth former UND player to take the helm. Berry had recently completed his ninth season as an assistant coach at UND in He served two stints in that role, first from through and again from through He also previously spent time as an assistant coach with the NHL s Columbus Blue Jackets ( ) and the AHL s Manitoba Moose ( ).
