The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regularseason standings. The winners of the two semifinal games (4:08/7:38 p.m. CT) will then meet in the Championship Game (7:38 p.m. CT) on Saturday, March 17 for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games will face each other in the third-place game (3:38 p.m. CT) earlier in the day Final NCHC Standings Conference Overall Pts. 16 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, DEC. 15 In the lone National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) game, and only non-conference game in the NCAA Friday, No. 2/2 Denver downed Dartmouth, 1-0, at Magness Arena behind senior goalie Tanner Jaillet s shutout in the series opener. Jaillet stopped all 23 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season and sixth of his career. After both teams had power play chances go empty in the first period, the Pioneers (10-3-4) took advantage in the second stanza when freshman forward Jaakko Heikkinen buried the puck in the back of the net on the man advantage with four minutes to play in the middle period. Junior forward Colin Staub and freshman forward Kohen Olischefski set up the tally with tic-tac-toe passing. DU controlled much of the play in the final frame, but neither team was able to score again as the Pioneers held on for the victory. Denver outshot Dartmouth (2-8-1), 32-23, and went 1-for-5 on the power play, compared to 0-for-3 for the Big Green. Devin Buffalo made 31 saves in net for Dartmouth. SATURDAY, DEC. 16 For the second straight night, a National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) team recorded a shutout, but NCHC teams went just 1-1 Saturday night in non-conference action. Colorado College earned the victory, as sophomore goaltender Alex Leclerc logged his second shutout of the season to backstop CC to a 4-0 win over Arizona State in the teams first-ever meeting. Up the road at Magness Arena, second-ranked Denver jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead, but Dartmouth rattled off five straight goals to upset the Pioneers, 5-4, as the teams split their weekend series. Behind a big first period and a shutout from sophomore goaltender Alex Leclerc, Colorado College downed Arizona State, 4-0, Saturday evening at the Broadmoor World Arena in the first-ever meeting between the non-conference foes. After a scoreless first 10 minutes, the Tigers (8-7-2) pounced with two goals in a span of 17 seconds midway through the first frame. Junior forward Westin Michaud scored the first of his two goals in the game, finishing a one-timer to open the scoring, while sophomore forward Nick Halloran doubled the CC lead ticks later when he potted his eighth goal of the season. Freshman forward Christiano Versich made it 3-0 with 4:07 left in the opening period, finishing a spinning pass from junior forward Trevor Gooch on the power play, while Versich also handed out a pair of assists for a career-high three-point night and his first collegiate multi-point game. Michaud then capped the scoring with his second tally of the night early in the second stanza, wristing home a feed from Gooch, who had a two-assist game. Leclerc totaled 36 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career, as the Tigers outshot the Sun Devils (4-10-3), 43-36, in the win. CC went 1-for-5 on the power play and killed both ASU man advantages. Following a narrow, 1-0, victory on Friday, No. 2/2 Denver came out firing on Saturday, grabbing a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes, but Dartmouth stormed back with three in the second and pulled off a 5-4 upset over the Pioneers at Magness Arena to earn a series split. Freshman forward Kohen Olischefski scored the first two goals of his collegiate career as part of the threegoal first frame for the Pioneers (10-4-4), two of which came on the power play with one of them from junior forward Troy Terry. The Big Green (3-8-1) came out strong in the second stanza, as Cam Strong got Dartmouth on the board early, while a little more than a minute later Will Graber made it a one-goal game. Late in the middle period, Shane Sellar scored the first of his two goals to tie the game. With only 1:37 remaining in regulation, Collin Rutherford beat senior goalie Tanner Jaillet to give the Big Green the lead and Sellar tacked on an empty-netter to seal the win, which turned out to be the game-winner after freshman forward Jack Doremus notched his first career goal for DU in the waning seconds. Despite the loss, Denver outshot Dartmouth, 42-28, but Devin Buffalo made 38 saves to earn the win in net. The Pioneers are now off until Dec. 29 when they host Merrimack and Dec. 30 when they welcome Air Force. SUNDAY, DEC. 17 In the only National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) game Sunday and the final NCAA game in the unofficial first half of the season, Colorado College battled Arizona State to a 4-4 overtime tie at the Broadmoor World Arena in their series finale. With the result, the NCHC heads into the holiday break with a combined non-conference record of , with the.664 non-conference winning percentage second among the six Division I men s conferences (Big Ten at.697). After earning a 4-0 shutout over Arizona State on Saturday night, Colorado College found the Sun Devils a bit more devilish on Sunday, settling for a 4-4 overtime tie in the series finale at the Broadmoor World Arena. ASU (4-10-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first frame, but the Tigers (8-7- 3) roared back with three goals in the final five minutes of the opening period, including two on the power play. Sophomore forward Nick Halloran scored for the second time this weekend to put CC on the board on the power play, while junior forward Trevor Gooch then tacked on two goals for his first career multigoal game, the second of which also came on the man advantage and put the Tigers in front, 3-2. Junior co-captain Tanner Ockey made it 4-2 Colorado College early in the second stanza, but the Sun Devils struck twice in a span of 32 seconds midway through the middle period to even the game, with the game-tying goal coming short-handed by Anthony Croston, who had a two-point night. Neither team managed to find the net in the third period or overtime as the game ended a 4-4 draw. Freshman forward Christiano Versich handed out two assists in the tie and also scored in the exhibition shootout following overtime. ASU finished with a slight, edge in shots on goal, after outshooting CC, 5-0, in the 5-on-5 overtime. The Tigers went 2-for-7 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, while sophomore goalie Alex Leclerc made 35 saves in net for Colorado College. CC returns to action Dec. 29 at crosstown rival Air Force, before hosting Merrimack Dec. 30. #NCHCHockey Dec , 2017
