His other hat trick came on Oct. 23, 2010 against Northern Michigan. He also had an assist Oct. 14 against the Raiders, giving him a career-best four points, and added a goal the next night. He also scored two goals Nov. 12 vs. Michigan and two goals Nov. 26 at Denver, giving him 12 multigoal games for his career, which leads active RedHawks. SCORING EARLY AND OFTEN: Miami has scored first in 11 of its 16 games this year, going in those contests with Miami s only win when it didn t score first coming Nov. 26 at Denver but the Hawks still tied the game within the first five minutes. During Miami s current eight-game unbeaten streak, the RedHawks have scored first six times. Miami has outscored its opponent in the first period this year, scoring within the first 10 minutes of the game nine times this year and four times within the first five minutes. CLOSE CONTESTS: Of Miami s 16 games this year, 14 have been decided by two goals or less, including each of the first 12 as Miami has never opened a season with 12 straight games decided by such a small margin. The lone games not decided by two goals or less were a 4-0 win over Bowling Green Nov. 18 and a 6-2 win vs. Providence Nov. 25. The RedHawks are 5-2 in one-goal games in but are just 1-4 in two-goal games, two of which include an empty-net goal late, while Miami also has two ties. Miami won both games at Alaska (Nov. 4-5) and beat Michigan Nov. 11 by scoring just two goals (all 2-1), something it hadn t done since March 27, 2010, a 2-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville in the NCAA Tournament, as the Hawks were when scoring two goals or less last year. DYNAMIC DUO: Senior goalies Connor Knapp and Cody Reichard are two of the top goalies in Miami history, despite splitting time in net during their careers. With a whitewash Nov. 18 vs. Bowling Green, Reichard now has 11 career shutouts, one shy of tying David Burleigh ( 03) for Miami s career whitewashes record of 12. Reichard s 50 career wins rank third, as he needs five more to tie for second in Miami history and 11 victories to become Miami s all-time winningest goalie, surpassing Burleigh (60). With a win Nov. 25, Knapp moved into sole possession of seventh in Miami history with 33 wins. Reichard sits ninth on Miami s career saves list with 1,739. Reichard and Knapp currently rank second and fourth, respectively, in career save percentage (.915,.910) and second and third in career GAA (2.03, 2.10). All-time goalie wins list: 1. 5 New Hampshire (10) and North Dakota (9). CONSISTENTLY AT THE TOP: Miami finished CCHA regular-season play with a record, earning them third place in the standings. Miami has finished in the top three in the CCHA standings each of the last six years, something no other team in the league has done. During that stretch, the Hawks have won the regular-season title twice, finished runner-up once and have three third-place finishes. That trend is expected to continue in as Miami was picked to finish second in the CCHA in both preseason polls (coaches and media) this year while Notre Dame was picked first in each preseason poll. The complete preseason polls are below. BROTHERLY LOVE:.The RedHawks have a pair of brothers on their team for the first time since , as freshman forward Alex Wideman joins his brother, Chris Wideman, a senior defenseman, on the Miami roster in The last pair of brothers to play at Miami together was Matt and Nathan Davis when Matt was a senior and Nathan was a sophomore. In Miami s exhibition win over Windsor Oct. 2, the duo each had an assist on Miami s third goal while on Oct. 8 vs. Bemidji State, Alex had an assist on Chris game-tying power play goal. CODY S ALL CLASS: Senior goalie Cody Reichard was named one of 20 candidates for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award for ice hockey. The 10 finalists will be announced mid-season with the winner being declared on April 6 at the Frozen Four. To be considered for the prestigious award, a senior student-athlete must exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. To learn more about Reichard s foundation, Swoop s Stoop, visit sports/m-hockey/swoopsstoop.html. CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN: Senior forward Alden Hirschfeld and senior defenseman Will Weber have been named co-captains for Miami for the season. Both were assistant captains on the squad. Hirschfeld has now played in 109 career games, with his 100th game as a Miami at Northern Michigan Dec. 2-3, RedHawk coming Oct. 27 against Lake Superior State, while Weber has suited up for 130 career contests. Preseason Picks: Four RedHawks were named to the Preseason All-CCHA Teams, while no other team had more than two players on either squad. Junior forward Reilly Smith, who was tabbed First-Team All-CCHA last year, was one of two unanimous selections. Joining Smith on the First Team was senior goalie Cody Reichard, the 2010 CCHA Player of the Year, who was a Preseason First-Team All-CCHA recipient last year as well. Miami grabbed both defensive spots on the Second Team as senior defensemen Will Weber and Chris Wideman were both tabbed Preseason Second- Team All-CCHA. Wideman was a Preseason First-Team All-CCHA honoree last year and earned Second-Team All-CCHA accolades at the end of Going Polling: Miami fell out of both national polls Oct. 31 for the first time since Oct. 17, 2005, a span of 145 polls, but are back at No. 18 in the USCHO.com Poll this week and are second among others receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. For the second time in three years, Miami started the season ranked No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, marking the 21st time in the last 57 polls that the Hawks have held the top spot, doing so 18 times in and twice last year. Miami was also selected No. 1 in the College Hockey News Preseason Top 10 and the Preseason INCH Power Rankings. FUTURE PROS: Although Miami lost a lot of talent from its squad, including three players who signed NHL contracts in Carter Camper (Boston), Pat Cannone (Ottawa) and Andy Miele (Phoenix), the RedHawks brought in a talented freshman class of eight players. Included in that group are three players who were already selected in the NHL Draft. Forward Tyler Biggs was taken with the 22nd overall pick of the 2011 Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, forward Blake Coleman was selected in the third round of the 2011 Draft by the New Jersey Devils (75th overall) and forward Jimmy Mullin was drafted by CCHA Preseason Polls Media Poll Pts. 1.
