The Wildcats are and in the CCHA. OPPONENT The MHL Red Stars is an all-star team of 25 players from the 51-team Junior Hockey League (MHL), players aged 19 to 21. The league is the younger brother of the KHL, the professional hockey league in Russia. Two of its recent players, Nail Yakupov and Mikhail Grigorenko, are widely projected to be the first two selections in the 2012 NHL draft. The Red Stars are making their second tour to North America in as many seasons, playing eight games from Dec. 17 through Jan. 5 (six against college teams, two against NAHL teams). The MHL is in its third year of existence and is the first junior hockey league that unites Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia. More than 2,000 players currently play for the league s 51 teams. 2 COACH KYLE Walt Kyle is in his 10th season on the bench for the Wildcats. His all-time record is He has led NMU to six 20-win seasons and the NCAA Tournament in The Cats have been to the CCHA Tournament at Joe Louis Arena seven times under Kyle. CATS ON THE ROAD NMU is 2-6 on the road this season and 1-5 on the road in CCHA play. The Cats split at Wisconsin (Oct. 7-8) to start the season and were swept in CCHA road series at Western Michigan (Oct ) and at Ohio State (Nov ). The other road win came at LSSU on Dec. 9. NMU is being outscored on the road. Stephan Vigier has six of his nine goals away from Marquette. The home schedule opened with a non-conference sweep of St. Cloud State (Oct ). NMU swept Miami (Dec. 2-3) for its first conference series sweep at home and defeated non-conference Michigan Tech (Dec. 16). The Cats defeated Michigan on Friday (Oct. 21) and tied on Saturday (Oct. 22) in the first CCHA home series and NMU had two ties with Notre Dame (Nov. 4-5). A Friday (Nov. 18) loss to Michigan State was the first home loss of the season. The Cats defeated the Spartans the next night (Nov. 19). CROWD CONTROL 37,864 fans have turned out for the 11 games at the Berry Events Center for an average of 3,442. NMU has sold out two Saturday nights when 4,260 Cat fans attended the Michigan tie on Oct. 22 and the Notre Dame tie on Nov. 5. EXTRA TIME NMU has played in five overtime games this season and are in those games. Reed Seckel has the only NMU overtime goal. He scored it at Wisconsin in the first game of the season. The Cats lost at Western Michigan in overtime and have two shootout wins and a shootout loss in overtime. The Cats finish their series with Michigan Tech in Houghton on Jan. 21 and travel to Miami (Jan ) before February. NOVEMBER NMU finished the month of November with a record of The lone victory was over Michigan State (Nov. 19). A pair of ties with shootout victories over Notre Dame (Nov. 4-5) opened the month. Ohio State swept a series in Columbus (Nov ) and the Spartans won the first game of the series (Nov. 18). NMU was outscored Justin Florek and Tyler Gron had two goals each in November and Kyle Follmer had three assists. Goaltender Reid Ellingson appeared in five games with a 2.38 goals against average and 92.8 save percentage. Jared Coreau registered the only win in the net, playing in two games with a 1.98 GAA and 92.1 save percentage. OCTOBER NMU finished overall and in the CCHA during the month of October. NMU split at Wisconsin, swept St. Cloud State at home, won a game and tied Michigan and was swept at Western Michigan. Justin Florek led the Cats in Oct. with nine points on five goals and four assists. Three of Florek s goals were on the power-play. Stephan Vigier scored five goals and had an assist and Tyler Gron scored four goals and had two assists. Reid Ellingson was 3-2 in the month with a 2.24 goals against average and a.922 save percentage. Jared Coreau was with a 3.10 goals against average and.886 save percentage. He added two assists in a 3-3 tie with the Wolverines on Saturday (Oct. 22). CCHA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior forward Tyler Gron was named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week after his performance against Miami (Dec. 2-3). He scored a power-play goal in the first period on Friday and added an assist on Jake Baker s game-winning goal late in the third. Saturday, he had a careerhigh three assists. He assisted on Justin Florek s two power-play goals and Stephan Vigier s power-play goal. CCHA GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK Senior goaltender Reid Ellingson was named CCHA Goaltender of the Week after his performance against Notre Dame (Nov. 4-5). He made 44 saves in a 1-1 tie on Saturday and stopped 69-of-72 shots on the weekend with a 1.50 GAA and.958 save percentage. He stopped all six shots in two shootout wins. CCHA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior forward Justin Florek was named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week after his performance against Michigan (Oct ). He scored an empty-net goal to seal the 5-3 victory Friday night. He also assisted on Tyler Gron s game-winning goal with less than three minutes to go in the third period. Saturday, Florek assisted on Gron s two power-play goals in the second period. CCHA PRESEASON POLL NMU was picked sixth in the CCHA Preseason Coaches Poll. The media selected the Wildcats tied for seventh. Notre Dame, Miami, Michigan, Western Michigan and Alaska were ranked above the Cats. Ferris State was tied with NMU in the media poll. Nov. 7, 2011 CCHA Goaltender of the Week Reid Ellingson Sr. (Cloquet, MN) Ellingson made 44 saves in a 1-1 tie against Notre Dame on Saturday (Nov. 5) and stopped 69-of-72 shots on the weekend with a 1.50 GAA and.958 save percentage. He stopped all six shots in two shootout wins. IN THE SHOOTOUT NMU is 2-1 in the shootouts. Reed Seckel and Tyler Gron are the only Wildcats to score in the shootout. Seckel scored his only chance of the season against Notre Dame on Nov. 4 while Gron scored against the Fighting Irish on Nov. 5. Gron is 1-for-2, Andrew Cherniwchan is 0-for-2, and Justin Florek and Brian Nugent are 0-for-1. Reid Ellingson has two wins in the net, stopping six chances. Coreau stopped 2-of-3 in the lone shootout loss to Michigan (Oct. 22). 8 Coaching Staff Walt Kyle NMU Head Coach Office Phone: Career Record: Walt Kyle, who enters his tenth season, was named the second head hockey coach in Northern Michigan University history on June 13, He took over for Rick Comley, who left to become the head coach at Michigan State University. Kyle has led the Wildcats to six 20-wins seasons and is at NMU. Kyle guided the Cats to the NCAA Tournament during the season and to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Championship Tournament at Joe Louis Arena in seven of his nine years. He was the head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team, which placed fourth at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in British Columbia, Canada. The Cats lost in the CCHA Tournament Champion and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in NMU finished and in the conference. NMU has won the third-place game at the CCHA Championship three times (02-03, 07-08, 08-09) under coach Kyle. NMU has three-22 win seasons (02-03, 04-05, 05-06), a 21-win season (03-04) and two 20-win seasons (07-08, 09-10) in the Walt Kyle era. Prior to his NMU return Kyle was an assistant coach with the National Hockey League s New York Rangers for two years under coach Ron Lowe. Glen Sather, the Rangers general manager who was the previous GM in Edmonton, brought Kyle to New York. Kyle was the coach of the American Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs, the Oilers top affiliate club. Kyle s other NHL experience came with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim under Ron Wilson. He has coached NHL stars such as Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. His other professional coaching positions were with the AHL s Baltimore Bandits, the International Hockey League s San Diego Gulls and the Western Hockey League s Seattle Thunderbirds ( ). Kyle was a two-time NMU letterman after transferring from Boston College. He captained the 1980 and 81 Wildcat squads that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. Kyle appeared in 85 games for the Cats and scored 31 goals and had 59 assists for 90 points. He became the first person in NCAA hockey history to score a goal in two tournaments for two separate teams. Following graduation, he became a graduate assistant coach under Comley and was promoted to assistant coach in 1982, a position he held until Kyle was the program s top assistant in 1991 when Northern won the NCAA Division I national title. Kyle graduated from NMU in 1981 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. He attended graduate school at Northern, where he studied exercise physiology. An active participant in USA Hockey, Kyle was an assistant coach under Lou Vairo in 2001 for Team USA, which finished fourth at the World Championships in Germany, and under Wilson for the 1994 squad that competed in Milan, Italy. He also was a coach with the 1992 and 93 U.S. Junior National Teams, the former which won the bronze medal the highest finish ever by an American squad under the old format, and one of only three U.S. teams to medal at the World Championships at the time. He was the assistant coach of the national junior squad under Kevin Constantine in Kyle was named to the USA Hockey s International Council in June Kyle and his wife, Ann, have four children: two daughters, Erin and Quinn; and two sons, Evan and Walt. NR NMU Hockey History Northern Michigan played its first varsity hockey season in Rick Comley was the first Wildcat coach. Comley led the Cats to a (.553) record in 26 seasons before taking the same job at Michigan State. NMU joined the CCHA in but left to join the WCHA from NMU rejoined the CCHA for the season and will again be going to the WCHA in NMU played its first 23 seasons in Lakeview Arena just down the street from the Berry Events Center. NMU won the 1991 NCAA Championship over Boston University. NMU has appeared eight times in the NCAA Tournament. Two CCHA regular season and tournament titles ( & ). Three WCHA tournament titles ( , , ) One WCHA regular season title ( ) Nine Hobey Baker finalists 15 All-Americans Berry Events Center Facts Opened its doors in 1999 Home of the NMU hockey team, the men s and women s basketball teams and the USOEC short track speedskating squad. The facility is named in honor of the John Berry family, who made a gift of $2 million to Northern Michigan University to help build the facility. John Berry is a 1971 NMU alumnus. One of only two CCHA arenas to have Olympic size ice (200 x 100 ). There are 16 luxury suites on the north side. Sellout for hockey games is 4,260. Conversion from hockey to basketball is completed in approximately five hours. A weight room, athletic training room and meeting rooms are located in the hockey area. Also designed to host concerts and community events, the Berry Events Center is equipped with moveable theatrical rigging and lighting. Some of the entertainers to recently perform at the Berry have been Maya Angelou, Dierks Bentley, Bill Cosby, Earvin Magic Johnson, and Jason Mraz.
