The Wildcats and Buckeyes will meet at 12:05 p.m. Friday in a Veterans Day matinee and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. OPPONENT Ohio State is overall and in the CCHA. The Buckeyes are currently on a 3-game winning streak and a 5-game unbeaten streak. OSU has CCHA splits with Notre Dame and Michigan State and had a win and tie with Alaska. Nonconference opponents have been at split with Quinnipiac and a sweep of Alabama-Huntsville. SERIES HISTORY Northern Michigan and Ohio State have met 72 times, dating back to 1977 when the Cats lost 3-2 in Columbus on Jan. 14. OSU leads in Columbus. NMU has won three of the last five games and six of the last 10. The last matchup in Columbus was Nov. 6-7, 2009, when the squads split (1-0 NMU, 5-4 OSU). WILDCATS AGAINST BUCKEYES Andrew Cherniwchan and Justin Florek have played six games against the Buckeyes in their careers. Cherniwchan has three goals and two assists. Florek has a goal and an assist and Tyler Gron has two goals and two assists in five games. All three goalies, Devan Hartigan, Jared Coreau and Reid Ellingson have played in two games against OSU. LAST MEETINGS NMU swept the Buckeyes on Oct from the Berry Events Center in the lone series last season. The Cats won 2-1 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday. Jared Coreau picked up both wins between the pipes, stopping 59 shots on the weekend. Tyler Gron and Greger Hanson scored on Friday and Erik Higby, Andrew Cherniwchan Kyle Follmer and Justin Florek scored on Saturday. CCHA GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK Senior goaltender Ellingson made 44 saves in a 1-1 tie against Notre Dame on Saturday and stopped 69-of-72 shots on the weekend with a 1.50 GAA and.958 save percentage. 2 This Week s Notes (11/7) WILDCATS RANKED NMU is ranked No. 14 in the latest USCHO.com/CSTV Poll after receiving 290 points. The Cats were No. 17 last week. The Cats are ranked No. 15 in the USA Today/ American Hockey Magazine Poll after receiving 46 points. LAST WEEKEND NMU and Notre Dame tied on both Friday (Nov. 4) and Saturday (Nov. 5). The Wildcats won the shootout both nights. NMU and Notre Dame have an even alltime record of , including in Marquette. COACH KYLE Walt Kyle is in his 10th season on the bench for the Wildcats. His all-time record is He has led NMU to six 20-win seasons and the NCAA Tournament in The Cats have been to the CCHA Tournament at Joe Louis Arena six times under Kyle. CROWD CONTROL 21,748 fans have turned out for games at the Berry Events Center. NMU has sold out two consecutive Saturday nights when 4,260 Cat fans attended the Michigan tie on Oct. 22 and the Notre Dame tie on Nov. 5. NMU AT BEC The Wildcats are unbeaten at home this season. The home schedule opened with a nonconference sweep of St. Cloud State (Oct ). The Cats defeated Michigan on Friday (Oct. 21) and tied on Saturday (Oct. 22) in the first CCHA home series and NMU had two ties with Notre Dame (Nov. 4-5). EXTRA PERIOD NMU has played in five overtime games this season and are in those games. Reed Seckel has the only NMU overtime goal. He scored it at Wisconsin in the first game of the season. CATS ON THE ROAD NMU is 1-3 on the road this season. The Cats split at Wisconsin (Oct. 7-8) to start the season and were swept in their first CCHA road series at Western Michigan (Oct ). TOUGH OPPONENTS Four of the five NMU opponents this season have been ranked in the nation s top 25. Wisconsin was No. 17, Michigan No. 1, Western Michigan No. 7 and Notre Dame No. 4. PINK EXPERIENCE The Wildcats and referees wore pink jerseys on Nov. 5 against Notre Dame that were auctioned off after the game with a minimum bid of $100. All proceeds went to Marquette General s Cancer Center. Pink towels and wristbands were also sold for $1. The Fighting Irish used pink hockey tape and wore pink skate laces. OCTOBER REVIEW NMU finished overall and in the CCHA during the month of October. NMU split at Wisconsin, swept St. Cloud State at home, won a game and tied Michigan and was swept at Western Michigan. Justin Florek led the Cats in Oct. with nine points on five goals and four assists. Three of Florek s goals were on the power-play. Stephan Vigier scored five goals and had an assist and Tyler Gron scored four goals and had two assists. Reid Ellingson was 3-2 in the month with a 2.24 goals against average and a.922 save percentage. Jared Coreau was with a 3.10 goals against average and.886 save percentage. LOOKING AHEAD The Cats host Michigan State at the Berry Events Center next weekend. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. both nights. Saturday s game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Detroit. It will be the first time since 2002 that FSD broadcasted a game from Marquette. 3 This Week s Notes (11/7) WILDCATS ON THE RADIO FM The Point is the official radio station of the NMU Wildcats. Dave Danis brings you the play-by-play all season long. CAPTAINS Seniors Justin Florek and Andrew Cherniwchan and junior Scott Macaulay will serve as captains this season. Florek will wear the C at home while Macaulay wears it on the road. CATS ON TELEVISION NMU plays four other TV games this season. Fox Sports Detroit will broadcast form the Berry Events Center on Saturday (Nov. 19) against Michigan State. 8 Walt Kyle NMU Head Coach Coaching Staff Office Phone: Career Record: Walt Kyle, who enters his tenth season, was named the second head hockey coach in Northern Michigan University history on June 13, He took over for Rick Comley, who left to become the head coach at Michigan State University. Kyle has led the Wildcats to six 20-wins seasons and is at NMU. Kyle guided the Cats to the NCAA Tournament during the season and to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Championship Tournament at Joe Louis Arena in seven of his nine years. He was the head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team, which placed fourth at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in British Columbia, Canada. The Cats lost in the CCHA Tournament Champion and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in NMU finished and in the conference. NMU has won the third-place game at the CCHA Championship three times (02-03, 07-08, 08-09) under coach Kyle. NMU has three-22 win seasons (02-03, 04-05, 05-06), a 21-win season (03-04) and two 20-win seasons (07-08, 09-10) in the Walt Kyle era. Prior to his NMU return Kyle was an assistant coach with the National Hockey League s New York Rangers for two years under coach Ron Lowe. Glen Sather, the Rangers general manager who was the previous GM in Edmonton, brought Kyle to New York. Kyle was the coach of the American Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs, the Oilers top affiliate club. Kyle s other NHL experience came with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim under Ron Wilson. He has coached NHL stars such as Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. His other professional coaching positions were with the AHL s Baltimore Bandits, the International Hockey League s San Diego Gulls and the Western Hockey League s Seattle Thunderbirds ( ). Kyle was a two-time NMU letterman after transferring from Boston College. He captained the 1980 and 81 Wildcat squads that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. Kyle appeared in 85 games for the Cats and scored 31 goals and had 59 assists for 90 points. He became the first person in NCAA hockey history to score a goal in two tournaments for two separate teams. Following graduation, he became a graduate assistant coach under Comley and was promoted to assistant coach in 1982, a position he held until Kyle was the program s top assistant in 1991 when Northern won the NCAA Division I national title. He attended graduate school at Northern, where he studied exercise physiology. Kris Rowe Athletic Trainer An active participant in USA Hockey, Kyle was an assistant coach under Lou Vairo in 2001 for Team USA, which finished fourth at the World Championships in Germany, and under Wilson for the 1994 squad that competed in Milan, Italy. He also was a coach with the 1992 and 93 U.S. Junior National Teams, the former which won the bronze medal the highest finish ever by an American squad under the old format, and one of only three U.S. teams to medal at the World Championships at the time. He was the assistant coach of the national junior squad under Kevin Constantine in Kyle was named to the USA Hockey s International Council in June Kyle and his wife, Ann, have four children: two daughters, Erin and Quinn; and two sons, Evan and Walt.
