Buckeyes head to Grand Forks, N.D., for matchups with North Dakota and Bemidji State COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State men s hockey team steps away from conference action, traveling to Grand Forks, N.D., for the Subway Holiday Classic. The event, featuring four 2009 NCAA tournament teams, will be held in the Ralph Engelstad Arena Friday and Saturday. THE SETUP The Buckeyes (5-8-1, CCHA) will take on host No. 4-ranked North Dakota (7-4-1, WCHA) at 7:37 p.m. CT Friday and No. 6-ranked Bemidji State (10-1-1, CHA) at 4 p.m. CT Saturday. No. 1-ranked Miami (9-1- 4, CCHA), Ohio State s rivalry partner for CCHA scheduling purposes, also is participating in the event and will play the Beavers at 4 p.m. Friday and the Fighting Sioux at 7:37 p.m. Saturday. The Buckeyes are scoring 2.50 goals a game while allowing 3.07 goals an outing. The team has converted 9-of-76 (11.8 percent) of its power-play chances and has stopped 55-of-77 (.714) opponent chances. Sophomore forward Zac Dalpe is first with eight goals and 16 points. Dalpe and junior forward Peter Boyd are tied for first with eight assists each and Boyd ranks second with 12 points. Junior forward Sergio Somma is second with five goals, followed by Boyd with four. Junior forward John Albert is third with seven assists and is tied for third in points with Albert with 10 each. Dalpe has a team-high three power-play goals and ranks first with a +8 mark, followed by junior defenseman Chris Reed at +7. BEMIDJI STATE - THE SERIES Series History...First Meeting Goalies junior Dustin Carlson and sophomore Cal Heeter have rotated starts throughout the year. Carlson has a 2.77 goals-against average and.913 save percentage. Heeter is with a 3.05 goals-against average and.903 save percentage. A LOOK BACK The Buckeyes were swept on the road last weekend at Ferris State, losing 8-1 and 6-5 in overtime. The Buckeyes lost to Ferris State, 8-1, last Friday night in the series opener. The Bulldogs scored three times in a 3:44 span in the first period and never looked back. Blair Riley, who ended the game with a hat trick, opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 5:11, followed by Cody Chupp s power-play tally at 7:31 and a Mike Embach score at 8:55. The Buckeyes got on the board just 54 seconds into the second period but the Bulldogs went on to score four goals in the stanza, including three power play tallies, to lead 7-1 after two. Eric Alexander scored the lone goal of the third with less than four minutes remaining. Dustin Carlson started between the pipes for the Buckeyes but was pulled at 8:55 of the first. Cal Heeter came in and played the next 25:25, allowing four goals on 13 shots, but was then replaced by Carlson, who made 13 saves on 14 shots to close out the game. Saturday, the Buckeyes led 5-2 early in the third period but the Bulldogs scored four unanswered for the win. The game-tying goal came on the power play at 19:09 and the winner was put home on the power play at 4:38 of overtime. Ohio State led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Taylor Stefishen (on the power play) and Sergio Somma. Somma added his second goal of the game and extended the lead to 3-0 3:36 into the second period. The Bulldogs got on the board at 8:54 with a power-play tally before Dalpe found the back of the net to make the score 4-1 at 9:55. The Bulldogs scored the final goal of the period on a delayed penalty at 12:31, sending the teams into intermission with OSU ahead 4-2. In the third Dalpe tallied at 2:45 to regain the Buckeyes two-goal lead. The Bulldogs converted on the power play less than three minutes later when Cody Chupp scored at 5:42 followed by a Riley tally at 11:47 to cut the lead to one (5-4). The Buckeyes thought they had gained another two-goal edge when a power-play shot was called a goal on the ice but was overturned because the puck had been knocked in with a high stick. With time winding down a Buckeye was assessed a penalty with 1:06 remaining and the Bulldogs tied the game when Chupp scored on the rebound with 51 seconds left in regulation. The teams were nearly through overtime when a penalty was called on Ohio State with 28 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs wasted no time getting the winner, with Casey Haines scoring just six seconds later following a faceoff win. It was the first time the Buckeyes were swept in a road series since losing two games at Michigan Oct. 31-Nov. 1, OHIO STATE VS. NORTH DAKOTA Ohio State and the Fighting Sioux have met just twice, as they played a two-game series in Grand Forks Dec , North Dakota swept that series with 7-2 and 8-2 wins. OHIO STATE VS. THE WCHA North Dakota is a member of the WCHA. Ohio State faced WCHA member Denver in October in Columbus, splitting the series with a 2-0 loss and 4-0 win. North Dakota is joined by Alaska Anchorage, Colorado College, Denver, Michigan Tech, Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Wisconsin in the WCHA. Ohio State is all-time vs. current WCHA teams, with three wins against the Seawolves, Pioneers and MTU Huskies, two victories vs. the Bulldogs and single wins vs. the Tigers, Gophers, Mavericks and Badgers. SIOUX STUFF No. 4-ranked North Dakota enters the weekend overall and in WCHA action. The team is winless in its last three games, dropping a game to St. Cloud State before back-toback losses to Denver on the road last weekend. All four of the team s losses have been by one goal, as the other loss came at Alaska Anchorage, 2-1. Senior Chris VandeVelde is first on the team with eight assists and 12 points. Senior defenseman Chay Genoway, sophomore David Toews and junior Evan Trupp all have four goals and six assists to tie for second with 10 points each. Sophomore Jason Gregoire has a team-best five goals. Sophomore Brad Eidsness has a record between the pipes, with a 1.69 goals-against average and.929 save percentage. Freshman Aaron Dell is 1-1-0, with a 2.26 GAA and.870 svpct. REUNION Buckeye junior Hunter Bishop began his college career at North Dakota, spending the first semester of his freshman year playing with the Fighting Sioux (Fall 2006). Bishop saw action in four games, posting one assist. He was roommates with current North Dakota senior Chay Genoway and also skated with Darcy Zajac and Chris VandeVelde. BEAVER BANTER Bemidji State, a 2009 Frozen Four participant, enters the weekend overall and in College Hockey America action. The Beavers lone loss came on the road at Minnesota, 4-1, Nov. 14. The squad is coming off a two-game sweep of Alabama-Huntsville, posting 6-1 and 6-3 wins at home. The squad was at CCHA-member Northern Michigan earlier this year. The squad averages 4.08 goals a game while holding opponents to 1.67 goals an outing. The team has converted 17.7 percent of its powerplay chances (11-for-62) and stopped 85.5 percent of its opponents opportunities (59-of-69). Junior Matt Read has a team-high 10 goals and 20 points and ranks third with 10 assists. Freshman Jordan George is second with 17 points, followed by sophomore Brad Hunt with 16. George and Hunt are tied for the team lead with 11 assists each. Sophomore Dan Bakala has a ledger with a 1.64 goals-against average and.938 save percentage. Freshman Mathieu Dugas is with a 1.67 GAA and.903 svpct.

OHIO STATE AND THE CHA Bemidji State is a member of College Hockey America, a league that is in its last year of existence. The Beavers will join the WCHA next season, along with current CCHA member Nebraska-Omaha. Ohio State is all-time vs. current CHA teams, including a sweep of Robert Morris a year ago. The Buckeyes are vs. RMU, 1-1 vs. Niagara and vs. Alabama-Huntsville. AAA LINE Against Ferris State last Saturday the Buckeyes were led by the line of alternate captains Zac Dalpe, Sergio Somma and Peter Boyd as the trio combined for 11 points. Dalpe posted a career-best four points on two goals and two assists. Somma had two goals and a helper for a personal-best three-point night and Boyd recorded helpers on all four goals scored by the line for a personal-high four assists and points. The line has skated together through five games and has 27 points in the stretch. Boyd has 11 points (3g, 8a) in the five games combined, Dalpe has six goals, four assists and 10 points and Somma has a line. POSTING POINTS Ohio State lost two games at Ferris State last weekend, the first time in five league series this year the team did not earn a point in a league series. The team has a sweep of Western Michigan, splits with Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan and a shootout win at Notre Dame. ON THE OFFENSIVE After they were held to one goal last Friday at Ferris State the Buckeyes rebounded with five goals in the second game vs. the Bulldogs. The squad is averaging 3.8 goals over the last five outings but just 2.5 on the year. The team has scored four or more goals in four of its last five games. EVEN UP The Buckeyes have outscored opponents, 24-18, at even strength this year but have been outscored on the power play, The Buckeyes have scored and allowed two shorthanded goals. ZAC ATTACK Sophomore Zac Dalpe, the Buckeyes leading scorer with eight goals, eight assists and 16 points, is on a five-game scoring streak, with points in 10 of his last 11 outings. Fourteen of his 16 points have come in CCHA contests, ranking him first among league players in conference-games only. He is tied for third in all games. Dalpe had a career-high four points at Ferris State last Saturday, topping the two three-point outings he had last year (last Feb. 8 vs. Notre Dame). He has two two-goal games and two two-assist games in his last four outings, with points over the stretch. Dalpe was a personal-best +4 in the Saturday contest vs. the Bulldogs and had a goal in the opener at Ferris State for a five-point weekend. BOYD SETS THEM UP Against Ferris State last Saturday junior Peter Boyd had a career-high four assists after eight games with two assists in his Buckeye career. It was his first career four-point game after six three-point nights, including one earlier this season against Northern Michigan. It was the Buckeyes first four-assist game since Andrew Schembri against Michigan Feb. 24, Boyd s +4 rating vs. the Bulldogs was a career high. He is on a five-game scoring streak, with three goals and eight assists for 11 points in the stretch. TOP HEAVY Four players have recorded 51.6 percent of the Buckeyes points this season. Zac Dalpe (16), Peter Boyd (12), Sergio Somma (10) and John Albert (10) have combined for 48 points, with the team recording 93 total on the year. IN OT The Buckeyes have played in two overtime contests this season. The team tied at Notre Dame Oct. 31 and won the shootout. The loss Saturday at Ferris State was the squad s first OT loss since Feb. 6, 2009 vs. Notre Dame. GET BACK ON TRACK Ohio State has allowed two or more power play goals in four of the last five games, with opponents scoring 13 power play goals on 33 chances (39.4 percent) during the streak. Last weekend the Buckeyes gave up four power play goals in each game against Ferris State. SHOOTING GALLERY Ferris State had a Buckeye opponent seasonhigh 43 goals last Saturday, the first time the Buckeyes gave up 40 or more shots since Jan. 17, 2009, also at Ferris State. The Buckeyes are allowing 31.8 shots a game this season, while putting 32.6 on net. RALLY MONKEY Ohio State has rallied to earn points in four games this year. At Lake Superior State the team was down 2-0 and 3-2 before winning 4-3 Oct. 24. 4 shootout to earn two points. Against Northern Michigan Nov. 14 the Buckeyes rallied three times (down 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3) for the 5-4 win. Nov. 13 vs. Western Michigan the Buckeyes were down 1-0 after the first and second periods but scored three times in 49 seconds for a 4-2 win. ON THE PLUS SIDE Freshman defenseman Devon Krogh and Stefishen were each a personal-best +3 in the game vs. Ferris State. BETWEEN THE PIPES Junior Dustin Carlson and sophomore Cal Heeter have rotated starts in the Buckeye net through the first 14 games of the season. Heeter is (with a shootout win) and has a 3.05 goals-against average and.903 save percentage. He held opponents to three or fewer goals in each of his first six starts, including a 39-save shutout of Denver Oct. 16. Carlson has a 2.77 goals-against average and.913 save percentage. He has been the tough-luck loser most nights, with the Buckeyes averaging 1.4 goals in the games he has started. Carlson (1-6-0) has held opponents to three or fewer goals in five of his seven games. FRESHMAN FUN Two Buckeye rookies - Paul Kirtland and Alex Carlson - have scored goals this year. Defenseman Devon Krogh leads the rookies with two assists and points. THE CENTURY CLUB Mathieu Picard, the only senior on the Buckeye squad, played in his 100th game Oct. 30 at Notre Dame and has now seen action in 107 contests. John Albert, Sergio Somma and Peter Boyd are all tied for second among current Buckeyes with 97 career games played. Chris Reed is next up with 95 games played in the Scarlet and Gray. DALPE, SIMS HONORED Sophomore forward Zac Dalpe and junior Shane Sims were named CCHA Offensive and Defenseman of the Week, respectively, after leading the Buckeyes to a series sweep of Western Michigan Nov in Columbus with back-toback 4-2 victories. Paris, Ontario, native Dalpe had a team-best four points, with two goals and two assists, along with a +3 mark, in the sweep of Western Michigan. Dalpe was a three-time CCHA Rookie of the Week last season. This is his first career offensive player of the week accolades Sims, from East Amherst, N.Y., was a teambest +4, had two assists and four blocked shots and was not on the ice for a goal against in the sweep of Western Michigan. 5 BUCKEYES IN THE BIGS R.J. Umberger has played in 23 games for the Blue Jackets, with 14 points on six goals and eight assists. He has played in 333 NHL games in his career, with a line. Ryan Kesler, an alternate captain for the Canucks, has played in 23 games and has 19 points, with 14 assists. Kesler, who is featured in the NHL 2K10 commerical, has skated in 343 NHL contests with a line. Rod Pelley, now a member of the New Jersey Devils, has played in 20 NHL games this season and has two assists. He has skated in 87 NHL games, all with the Devils, and has six assists and eight points. Washington Capital David Steckel has seen action in 24 games this year and has two assists. He is in his third full season with the Caps and has played in 179 NHL games, with 33 points, on 13 goals and 20 assists. Tyson Strachan has played in six NHL games with the St. Louis Blues this year, posting two assists, but is currently in the AHL with the Peoria Rivermen. He has played in 36 NHL games and has five helpers. Former Buckeye defenseman Nate (Nathan) Guenin ( ) was called up to the Pittsburgh Penguins last week and skated in his first two games for his hometown team before he was returned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL.
