No. 3/3 St. Cloud State hosts the Mavericks this Saturday on Hockey Day Minnesota, which is hosted in St. Cloud this year, while No. 14/13 Minnesota Duluth travels to Mankato on Tuesday night. Both SCSU and UMD defeated Minnesota State in the first half of their home-and-home series earlier this season, while NCHC teams are a combined against WCHA foes this season. Overall, NCHC teams are a combined in non-conference play this season, with the.665 win percentage second among the six conferences behind only the Big Ten at.688. The NCHC is right on pace to match, or perhaps surpass, last year s non-conference record when NCHC teams finished a combined in the regular season. (page 9) Six NCHC teams are ranked in both the USCHO.com Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll this week, with all six in the top 15. The six ranked teams are the most from one conference in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll and tie for the most in the USCHO Poll. With St. Cloud State sitting at No. 3, it s only the fourth week since the start of the season that an NCHC team has not been No. 1 in the USCHO Poll. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD), while only three other NCAA teams have total. (page 9) Two NCHC skaters are approaching the century club for points. Omaha senior forward Tyler Vesel has 95 career points (36g, 59a), while Denver junior forward Troy Terry sits only six points from 100 with 39 goals and 55 assists for 94 points. The only active NCHC player with 100 career points is Denver junior forward Dylan Gambrell (39-77=116). Four of the top eight offenses in the NCAA play in the NCHC, led by SCSU s 3.95 goals per game, which rank second in the country (SCSU s opponent Saturday, Minnesota State, is third at 3.79 gpg). Omaha (3.77 gpg) moved up to fourth nationally after 15 goals last weekend, while Western Michigan ranks sixth in the NCAA scoring 3.64 gpg and Denver (3.55 gpg) is eighth. The NCHC also has four of the top eight power play units nationally with Omaha leading the way at 27.7 percent, which is third in the country. Miami (26.3 percent) and Denver (24.8 percent) are fifth and sixth, while St. Cloud State is tied for seventh at 23.8 percent. (pages 29-30) Fifteen NCHC players were among 74 NCAA skaters nominated for the Hobey Baker Award this week. Among the 15, one is a freshman, six are sophomores, five juniors and three are seniors, while 12 are forwards and three are defensemen. (list on page 8) Omaha senior forward Jake Randolph earned NCAA First Star of the Week Tuesday for his six-point weekend (3g, 3a) against Miami. He is the third NCHC player to garner NCAA First Star of the Week this season and the ninth NCHC player overall to nab an NCAA Star this year. (page #NCHCHockey TheNCHC NCHC.tv

The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, JAN. 12 On one of, if not the wildest night in National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) history, all seven NCHC offenses in action Friday night exploded, with each team tallying at least five goals and the seven teams combining for a total of 46 goals (6.57 per team). At Baxter Arena in Omaha, 17th-ranked Omaha tied an NCHC record for most goals in a game with 11, which broke a school record, while No. 20 Miami still potted seven in an 11-7 defeat as the teams combined for an NCHC-record 18 goals, shattering the old mark of 14. In a game that only saw 12 total goals, No. 12/12 Western Michigan scored four goals in the second period to erase a two-goal first-period deficit and come away with a 7-5 victory at No. 2/2 St. Cloud State, handing the Huskies their first home loss of the season. In the final conference game of the night, No. 15/15 Minnesota Duluth used a strong power play and a three-goal second period to pull away and then hold on for a 6-5 win at Colorado College. Not wanting to miss out on the score-fest, No. 7/8 North Dakota also potted five goals despite playing a non-conference opponent, as UND collected a 5-1 victory over Bemidji State in their home-andhome series opener. In the highest-scoring game in NCHC history, No. 17 Omaha outscored No. 20 Miami, 11-7, Friday night at Baxter Arena. Omaha s 11 goals set a school record and tied the NCHC record for goals in a game. Senior forward David Pope led the Mavericks (11-9-1, NCHC) with a career-high five points, tying the school record, on a goal and four assists, with the four helpers matching his own school record from last year. Fellow senior forward Jake Randolph notched a career-high four points on two goals and two assists as he was the lone Maverick to tally multiple goals, while senior defenseman Joel Messner and sophomore forward Zach Jordan each logged a career-high four points as well, on a goal and three helpers. Omaha jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led 4-1 after 20 minutes. The RedHawks (9-10-2, NCHC) mounted a comeback in the second stanza, closing within 4-3 midway through the middle period, but Jordan answered for UNO to regain a two-goal cushion as they took a 7-4 advantage into the second intermission after a late power play goal from Pope. Miami closed within two at 7-5 early in the final frame, but would get no closer. Freshman forwards Phil Knies and Ben Lown led the RedHawks with three points each, Knies on two goals and an assist, Lown on the opposite. Omaha went 4-for-6 on the power play and outshot Miami, In another wild, high-scoring affair, No. 12/12 Western Michigan used a four-goal second period to overcome a first-period deficit and top No. 2/2 St. Cloud State, 7-5, Friday, handing the Huskies their first loss at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center this season. Sophomore forward Hugh McGing scored the first of his two goals in the game on a breakaway to open the scoring early for the Broncos (12-8-1, NCHC), but the Huskies (13-4-3, NCHC) answered with three straight goals, including the latter two on the power play, to grab a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. McGing, who had a three-point night, scored his second goal of the game on the power play to start a second-period rally that saw four different Broncos find the back of the net to take a 5-3 lead. The third period was quiet until the teams traded four goals in the final 1:21 of the game, with WMU sophomore forward Lawton Courtnall scoring two empty-net goals, while the Huskies quickly answered with an even strength goal after each one, but were unable to get closer than two. Junior forward Robby Jackson notched two goals for the Huskies in the loss. SCSU outshot WMU, 31-28, despite the loss, but was only 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Broncos were 2-for-5. In the final conference game of the night, No. 15/15 Minnesota Duluth and Colorado College combined for 11 goals with UMD holding off the Tigers for a 6-5 win Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena. Junior forward Peter Krieger and sophomore forward Riley Tufte both tallied a career-high four points on two goals and two assists each to pace the Bulldogs (10-9-3, NCHC). The teams traded three goals each in the first period with Krieger opening the scoring, while CC sophomore forward Nick Halloran, who had a three-point game, scored the first of his two goals to tie the game and the Tigers (9-9-3, /0 NCHC) grabbed the lead 26 seconds later. UMD freshman forward Kobe Roth scored his first career goal on the power play to tie the game, while Halloran struck again for CC on the man advantage only to see UMD answer with another power play goal to tie the game again at 3-3 after 20 minutes. The Tigers took a 4-3 lead two minutes into the second stanza, but Tufte scored two straight goals and Krieger made it three straight by the Bulldogs to put UMD ahead, 6-4, as they set up each other s goals. CC junior forward Westin Michaud closed the deficit to one with a power play goal in the third but the Tigers couldn t find the equalizer. The teams finished even on shots, 31 all, and went a combined 5-for-11 on the power play. In the lone non-conference game of the night, No. 7/8 North Dakota scored two goals in the second and third periods each to pull away from Bemidji State for a 5-1 win Friday at the Sanford Center in the opener of a home-and-home series. Senior forward Austin Poganski and junior forward Nick Jones each tallied two goals in the win with Jones adding an assist for a threepoint game. Poganski put the Fighting Hawks (12-6-5) in front only 18 ticks into the contest with his first of the night, while the Beavers (11-7-5) answered midway through the opening period. Jones and Poganski each scored in a three-minute stretch in the middle of the second stanza to put UND up for good. Jones then added a power play goal early in the final frame for good measure and an empty-net goal completed the scoring. UND outshot Bemidji State, 31-29, with senior goalie Cam Johnson making 28 saves to earn the win in net. SATURDAY, JAN. 13 One night after NCHC teams combined to put up 46 goals, scores were a bit more normal on Saturday as two teams completed conference sweeps, while the third NCHC series ended in a split with one team taking sole possession of first place in the NCHC. In the battle for the top spot in the NCHC standings, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State avenged Friday s loss by edging No. 12/12 Western Michigan, 4-3, behind a late goal from freshman forward Easton Brodzinski to earn a series split and regain first place in the NCHC by themselves. After setting a record with 18 combined goals Friday, No. 17 Omaha and No. 20 Miami combined for only seven Saturday as the Mavericks held off a third-period rally from the RedHawks for a 4-3 victory and a weekend sweep. Also collecting a series sweep was No. 15/15 Minnesota Duluth, which downed Colorado College, 5-1, on the Jan , 2018 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 17

18 Previous Week Round-Up road behind a big third period. In non-conference play, No. 7/8 North Dakota skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with Bemidji State to finish their home-and-home series. In the only series to end in a split this weekend, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State tallied a late goal to break a tie and pick up a 4-3 victory over No. 12/12 Western Michigan Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Freshman forward Easton Brodzinski broke a 3-3 deadlock with only 4:28 remaining in regulation for the game-winner. Junior forward Mikey Eyssimont, who set up the game-winner, finished with three points on two assists and a third-period power play goal. The Broncos (12-9-1, NCHC) jumped in front in the closing seconds of the first period when sophomore forward Dawson DiPietro, who had a two-point night, scored with only seven ticks left. The Huskies (14-4-3, NCHC) pulled even in the second stanza, striking twice in the period, sandwiched around a short-handed WMU tally as the teams went to the third even at 2-2. That set the stage for Brodzinski s late goal after Eyssimont and WMU junior defenseman Corey Schueneman traded power play markers. SCSU finished with a commanding, edge in shots on goal, but sophomore Ben Blacker made 36 saves in defeat for the Broncos to keep it close. SCSU hosts No. 8/6 Minnesota State next Saturday on Hockey Day Minnesota, while WMU returns home to host Colorado College for a pair of NCHC games. games at No. 12/12 Western Michigan. In the lone non-conference game Saturday, No. 7/8 North Dakota skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with border rival Bemidji State at Ralph Engelstad Arena as the teams concluded their homeand-home series and UND wrapped up out-of-conference play. After a scoreless first frame, junior forward Nick Jones opened the scoring 3:28 into the second stanza to put the Fighting Hawks (12-6-6) in front. Leo Fitzgerald pulled BSU (11-7-6) even on the power play midway through the middle period, with junior defenseman Christian Wolanin answering with his own power play goal minutes later to regain the lead. The Beavers had their own answer, however, as Dillon Eichstadt scored midway through the final frame for the game-tying goal, while neither team struck in overtime. UND, which went 1-for-5 a man up, finished with a edge in shots on goal in the draw. North Dakota returns to NCHC play next weekend at No. 15/15 Minnesota Duluth. After combining for an NCHC record 18 goals in Friday s contest, No. 17 Omaha and No. 20 Miami only managed seven goals Saturday as the Mavericks held on for a 4-3 win to complete a sweep at Baxter Arena. Omaha (12-9-1, NCHC) struck four times in the second period, all in an 11-minute stretch in the later half of the stanza from four different Mavericks. Senior forward Tyler Vesel notched the eventual game-winner on the power play with 1:20 to go in the middle period. Miami ( , NCHC) attempted to rally in the third period, scoring three times, first on the power play by freshman forward Phil Knies early in the frame. Junior forward Josh Melnick made it a two-goal game five minutes later, while Knies tallied for a second time with 2:32 to play but the RedHawks couldn t find the equalizer. Despite the loss, Miami outshot Omaha, 31-27, including 16-4 in the final frame, but junior goalie Evan Weninger made 28 saves to earn the win in net. The Mavericks are back in action next weekend at No. 5/5 Denver, while the RedHawks are off until playing at Colorado College Jan Earning its first NCHC sweep of the season, No. 15/15 Minnesota Duluth downed Colorado College, 5-1, Saturday at the Broadmoor World Arena, scoring the game s final five goals. The Tigers (9-10-3, /0 NCHC) pounced on the board first when junior forward Westin Michaud struck on the power play midway through the opening period. But it was all UMD ( , NCHC) from there, with sophomore defenseman Nick Wolff tying the game with his own power play goal seven minutes later. Freshman forward Kobe Roth, who scored his first career goal in Friday s win, potted the game-winner Saturday with only 1:21 to play in the second stanza. The Bulldogs then tacked on three more tallies in the final frame with Roth capping the outburst for his first multi-goal game. UMD outshot CC, 45-19, including 36-9 over the final 40 minutes. Sophomore goalie Hunter Shepard earned the win in net with 18 saves.
