Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings), making all games worth three (3) points. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings, while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. NCHC Facts and Figures NCHC teams wrapped up non-conference play for the season last weekend, finishing with a combined record of in non-conference play this season, with the.659 win percentage tops among the six Division I men s hockey conferences (Big Ten is second at.590). The.659 win percentage tops last season's NCHC combined non-conference record of (.649) in regular-season play. The NCHC has compiled the best combined non-conference record among the six conferences in three of the last four seasons ( , , ). (page 9) St. Cloud State remains No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll for the seventh straight week this week, marking the 10th straight week and 11 times in 14 weeks an NCHC team has been atop that poll. Three NCHC teams are now in the top 5 of both polls with Denver, on a five-game win streak, moving up to No. 3 in the USCHO Poll and Minnesota Duluth at No. 5. Western Michigan, riding an NCAA-best eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1), entered the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll for the first time this season at No. 14. The four ranked teams in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll lead all conferences, while the five teams in the USCHO.com Poll tie for the most with ECAC Hockey. (page 9) Coming into last weekend, there were no active NCHC players with 100 career points, but three players joined the Century Club last weekend. Miami senior forward Josh Melnick (35g, 65a in 128 GP), St. Cloud State senior defenseman Jimmy Schuldt (33g, 67a in 135 GP), and SCSU senior forward Robby Jackson (41g, 59a in 129 GP) all now sit on 100 career points. SCSU senior forward Patrick Newell is the next-closest NCHC player to joining the club with 94 career points (28g, 66a), while Denver senior forward Jarid Lukosevicius has 93 points in 136 games (54g, 39a). There's plenty of intrigue in the top-5 series taking place between St. Cloud State and UMD in Duluth this weekend. SCSU first-year head coach Brett Larson was a UMD assistant coach from and again the last three seasons ( ), helping the Bulldogs win two national titles under head coach Scott Sandelin. In addition, Sandelin, UMD sophomore defensemen Mikey Anderson and Dylan Samberg and freshman forward Noah Cates all return to UMD after helping the U.S. National Junior Team win a silver medal at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship in Vancouver. Sandelin was an assistant coach for Team USA, while the UMD trio was teammates with SCSU junior forward Ryan Poehling, who rejoins the Huskies to play against his teammates from last week. Poehling was named MVP of the World Juniors tournament, as well as the Top Forward (5g, 3a in 7 GP). WMU freshman blue liner Mattias Samuelsson also won a silver with Team USA, rejoining the Broncos to face No. 20 Miami. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second Penrose Cup last season, after also winning it in the NCHC s inaugural season. North Dakota has also won two Penrose Cups ( , ), while Denver is the only other team to win it ( ). 18 Previous Week Round-Up WEDNESDAY, JAN. 2 MAINE 4, COLORADO COLLEGE 2 ORONO, Maine Colorado College comfortably outshot Maine, but a three-goal second period by the Black Bears doomed the Tigers in a 4-2 loss Wednesday at Alfond Arena in the NCHC s first game of CC (8-10-2) finishes non-conference play with a record of after topping Merrimack on Monday to start its East Coast swing. The Tigers started strong, grabbing the lead only 2:41 into the game when freshman Erik Middendorf finished a feed in front of the net with a one-timer from sophomore Troy Conzo. The Black Bears (6-9-2) answered just over a minute later when Chase Pearson popped in the puck. Less than a minute after that, CC regained its lead when senior Trey Bradley scored top-shelf on his back-hand from close range after a nice dumpoff pass from classmate Mason Bergh. The Tigers led 2-1 after only five minutes, but CC would not score again. Maine tied the game 8:06 into the second stanza when Brendan Robbins put home a rebound after a shot from Adam Dawe was stopped by junior Alex Leclerc. Three minutes later the Black Bears grabbed their first lead of the night when Tim Doherty took advantage of a turnover and scored unassisted. With less than two minutes left in the middle period, Patrick Shea doubled Maine s lead to make it 4-2. The Tigers made a push for a comeback in the final frame, outshooting Maine, 14-6, over the last 20 minutes, but CC couldn t find the back of the net. Colorado College finished with a edge in shots on goal, but Maine s Jeremy Swayman totaled 33 saves in net. The teams went a combined 0-for-5 on the power play. FRIDAY, JAN. 4 No. 17 WESTERN MICHIGAN 5, UCONN 1 LAS VEGAS Playing its first game in 27 days, No. 17 Western Michigan showed no signs of rust, dominating from start to finish in a 5-1 win over UConn Friday evening in the first game of the Ice Vegas Invitational at T-Mobile Arena, home of the Vegas Golden Knights. Sophomore forward Austin Rueschhoff and junior defenseman Cam Lee each tallied a goal and an assist to help extend the Broncos (10-6-1) unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1). Lee opened the scoring only 4:41 into the game when senior Colt Conrad forced a turnover and quickly found Lee in close to finish in an open net. WMU then doubled its lead five minutes later when sophomore Josh Passolt tallied his team-leading 11th goal of the season with a wrister from the left circle off a feed from Rueschhoff. Rueschhoff made it 3-0 early in the second stanza with a goal of his own, redirecting a shot from the point. The Huskies (6-12-1) broke up the shutout late in the middle period with a power play tally, but junior defenseman Luke Bafia added an unassisted goal early in the third period to put the game out of reach and sophomore Ethen Frank notched WMU s final goal of the game. The Broncos outshot UConn, 41-23, in the win, including 15-2 in the first period. No. 8/7 DENVER 6, WISCONSIN 3 MADISON, Wis. Behind a four-goal third period, No. 8/7 Denver pulled away from Wisconsin Friday night at the Kohl Center in a match-up of old WCHA foes, as the Pioneers stretched their winning streak to four games. Junior Liam Finlay compiled three points in the victory on a goal and two assists, while sophomore Ryan Barrow and freshman Tyler Ward each chipped in a goal and an assist. Fellow freshman Slava Demin opened the scoring for DU (11-4-2) only 4:15 into the game when he buried a wrister from the left circle after taking a cross-ice feed from Finlay on the power play. The Badgers (8-8-3) pulled even early in the second stanza, but Barrow restored Denver s lead with 4:29 left in the middle period on a wrap-around from behind the net. It didn t last long, however, as Seamus Malone potted a power play goal for UW to tie the contest at 2-2 in the final minute of the second period. The Pioneers came out firing in the final frame, striking three times in the first 5:24. Finlay made it 3-2 only 2:43 into the third when he put home a rebound in front of the net after Ward s shot was saved, while Ward notched the eventual game-winner a few minutes later, burying a one-timer after sophomore defenseman Ian Mitchell circled the zone and found the open man. Sophomore forward Kohen Olischefski then capped the outburst 19 seconds after Ward s goal, popping in his own rebound to put the game out of each. Denver finished with a edge in shots on goal. No. 10/10 PROVIDENCE 4, No. 16 MIAMI 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. Tenth-ranked Providence struck twice in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and top No. 16 Miami, 4-2, Friday night at Schneider Arena, defeating the RedHawks for the second time this season. After Tyce Thompson put the Friars (12-4-3) ahead on a wrister only 4:22 into the game, Miami (9-7-3) grabbed the lead with a pair of power play goals in the first frame. Senior Ryan Siroky tied it for MU less than two minutes after Thompson s tally, burying a one-timer in the slot off a feed from sophomore Phil Knies. With 2:50 left in the opening period, senior captain Josh Melnick put the RedHawks ahead on a wrister from the right circle. The Friars started to take control in the second stanza, tying the game with a power play goal of their own from Scott Conway, but Miami junior goalie Ryan Larkin made 13 saves in the frame to keep it tied at 2-2 after 40 minutes. Midway through the final frame, however, Matt Koopman notched the game-winner for PC, deflecting a shot out of mid-air. The Friars then added one more goal in the closing minutes to seal the victory. Providence outshot Miami, 42-15, in the win, while MU ended 2-for-4 on the power play and Larkin totaled 38 saves. CANISIUS 3, No. 13 NORTH DAKOTA 1 BUFFALO, N.Y. Despite heavily outshooting Canisius, No. 13 North Dakota struggled to find the back of the net, falling 3-1 to the Golden Griffins Friday night at HarborCenter, suffering UND s first ever loss to an Atlantic Hockey school. North Dakota (9-8-1) fired 33 shots on goal to only 14 for Canisius (7-9-2), but Blake #NCHCHockey Jan. 7-13, 2019

19 Previous Week Round-Up Weyrick compiled 32 saves to stymie the Fighting Hawks. The Golden Griffins grabbed the lead late in the first frame when David Parrottino scored on the power play. North Dakota pulled even late in the second stanza with a short-handed goal from freshman forward Mark Senden, as UND forced a turnover behind Canisius net and after a scramble, Senden poked in a loose puck in the crease. The game went to the final frame knotted at 1-1, but Canisius Cameron Heath broke the deadlock only 1:40 into the third period, finishing tic-tac-toe passing on a 3-on-1 rush for the game-winner. UND tried to rally, outshooting the Golden Griffins, 17-5, over the final 20 minutes, and even hit the post, but Canisius sealed the victory with an empty-netter in the closing seconds. No. 14 UNION 7, No. 1/1 ST. CLOUD STATE 2 CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. Top-ranked St. Cloud State saw its 10-game unbeaten streak come to crashing halt Friday evening in the opening game of the Three Rivers Classic, as No. 14 Union downed the Huskies, 7-2, at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. SCSU (13-2-2) outshot the Dutchmen (10-4-4), 38-25, but Darion Hanson totaled 36 saves for Union in the win. Sophomore forward Kevin Fitzgerald tallied both goals for the Huskies, while Ryan Walker and Brandon Estes each had two for Union, and Cole Maier dished out four assists for the Dutchmen. The game was scoreless for the first 15 minutes, until Walker and Estes scored two minutes apart to put Union up 2-0 after 20 minutes. Parker Foo made it 3-0 midway through the middle period, before Fitzgerald put the Huskies on the board with a power play tally. The Dutchmen made it 4-1 a minute later, however, thwarting any chance of a comeback. Estes and Brett Supinski upped the score to 6-1 only 1:32 into the final frame, before Fitzgerald poked in his second goal of the game. SATURDAY, JAN. 5 No. 17 WESTERN MICHIGAN 4, AIR FORCE 1 LAS VEGAS Sophomore forward Ethen Frank scored two goals to power No. 17 Western Michigan to the Ice Vegas Invitational title with a 4-1 win over Air Force Saturday night in the championship game at T-Mobile Arena. With the win, the Broncos (11-6-1) extended their unbeaten streak to an NCAA-best eight games (7-0-1). Junior defenseman Luke Bafia opened the scoring with his second goal of the weekend and of the season when he skated in from the left side and snuck the puck between the post and the goalie s skate with five minutes left in the first frame. WMU doubled the lead early in the second stanza when Frank carried the puck from his own zone up the right side to the opposite end before deking the Falcon netminder to make it 2-0. Air Force (11-8-1) cut its deficit in half with a 5-on-3 power play goal in the latter part of the middle period, but wouldn t get any closer as senior goaltender Trevor Gorsuch totaled 24 saves to earn tournament MVP honors. Frank and junior Lawton Courtnall each added an empty-netter in the closing minutes to seal the championship. WMU outshot the Falcons, 43-25, in the win, while Bafia, Frank and Gorsuch were named to the All-Tournament Team. Western Michigan looks to continue its unbeaten streak when it returns to NCHC play next weekend at home against No. 16 Miami. No. 8/7 DENVER 4, WISCONSIN 3 (OT) MADISON, Wis. Erasing an early two-goal deficit, No. 8/7 Denver pushed its winning streak to five games with a 4-3 overtime win over Wisconsin Saturday at the Kohl Center to complete a weekend sweep of its old WCHA foe. Freshman defenseman Slava Demin, who had a two-point night, played the role of hero, scoring the game-winner 1:42 into the extra session with a top-shelf snipe from the slot after classmate Brett Stapley set him up with a nifty pass from behind the goal line. The Pioneers (12-4-2) had to rally in the third period just to force overtime as another freshman Cole Guttman knotted the game at 3-3 with a wrister. The Badgers (8-9-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead only 5:16 into the game as Dominick Mersch and Brock Caufield scored 28 seconds apart. Freshman Tyler Ward put DU on the board when he potted a rebound from Demin s shot midway through the first frame and junior Erich Fear tied it early in the middle period. Wisconsin regained the lead, 3-2, on a power play goal later in the second stanza, paving the way for DU s third-period rally. Denver heavily outshot UW, 40-16, in the win. The Pioneers return to NCHC play next weekend, hosting Omaha for a pair. No. 1/1 ST. CLOUD STATE 5, ROBERT MORRIS 2 PITTSBURGH After seeing its 10-game unbeaten streak snapped by No. 14 Union in Friday s Three Rivers Classic semifinals, top-ranked St. Cloud State rebounded with a 5-2 win over host Robert Morris Saturday in the consolation game at PPG Paints Arena, home of the Penguins. It was a tight contest for much of the game, with SCSU (14-2-2) taking a 1-0 lead 8:17 into the game when senior Patrick Newell skated into the zone, slammed on the brakes to lose his defender, before skating to the slot and blasting a shot for his 11th marker this season. RMU (8-11-1) answered less than 30 seconds later, however, to tie the game. It remained that way until sophomore Kevin Fitzgerald broke the deadlock with his third goal of the weekend late in the second stanza. Again the Colonials had answer, knotting the game on the power play early in the final frame. Senior Robby Jackson then went to work, scoring two goals in a six-minute span to put SCSU up for good as he finished a feed from freshman Nolan Walker each time. The two tallies moved Jackson into the Century Club with 100 career points, along with fellow senior Jimmy Schuldt, who had an assist in the victory. The Huskies outshot RMU, 35-22, in the win. SCSU returns to NCHC play next weekend with a showdown at No. 4/5 Minnesota Duluth. No. 16 MIAMI 3, No. 10/10 PROVIDENCE 3 (OT) PROVIDENCE, R.I. Behind a three-goal third period, No. 16 Miami rallied from two down to earn a 3-3 overtime tie with No. 10/10 Providence Saturday at Schneider Arena in the teams third meeting this season. 20 Previous Week Round-Up ods. Senior Ryan Siroky put Miami (9-7-4) on the board with a power play tally of his own 5:58 into the third period when his shot near the slot snuck through Hayden Hawkey s pads. Only 13 ticks later, however, Providence restored its two-goal lead. Redshirt sophomore Christian Mohs made it a 3-2 game with his first collegiate goal on a deflection with 5:21 left in regulation. Miami then pulled goalie Ryan Larkin for an extra attacker in the final minute and with 42 ticks left, junior Gordie Green sent a one-timer from the slot into the back of the net to force overtime. Despite a 4-1 edge in shots for Providence in the extra session, neither team scored as the game ended in a tie. PC outshot Miami, 34-30, for the game, with Larkin totaling 31 saves. The RedHawks head to Kalamazoo next weekend for two NCHC games at No. 17 Western Michigan. CANISIUS 2, No. 13 NORTH DAKOTA 1 BUFFALO, N.Y. Despite a more than 3-to-1 margin in shots on goal, No. 13 North Dakota once again could not find the back of the net in a stunning, 2-1 setback against Canisius Saturday night at HarborCenter. The Fighting Hawks (9-9-1) came out on fire, outshooting the Golden Griffins (8-9-2), 23-2, over the first 20 minutes, but it only resulted in a 1-1 tie at the end of the first period. UND opened the scoring when senior Nick Jones backhanded a rebound from a shot by freshman Jacob Bernard-Docker into the open net with 4:48 left in the first frame. The lead lasted exactly two minutes until Felix Chamberland tied things up for Canisius. A more even second period went scoreless, while Grant Meyer tallied the unassisted game-winner for the Golden Griffins 1:29 into the final frame when UND turned the puck over in its own zone and Meyer quickly fired a wrister that snuck behind goalie Adam Scheel. UND pulled Scheel for an extra attacker late, but the Fighting Hawks couldn t find the equalizer. North Dakota finished with a edge in shots on goal despite the loss. UND looks to find its scoring touch in NCHC play next weekend when it hosts Colorado College for two games. U.S. U-18 NATIONAL TEAM 4, No. 4/5 MINNESOTA DULUTH 2 (EXH.) DULUTH, Minn. Missing its head coach and three players to the U.S. National Junior Team, No. 4/5 Minnesota Duluth fell in exhibition play to a different U.S. National Team the Under-18 squad 4-2 Saturday at AMSOIL Arena. The U-18 Team jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of power play goals midway through the first frame and early in the second stanza. The Bulldogs (11-5-2) cut their deficit in half midway through the middle period when freshman Tanner Laderoute deflected a shot from junior blue liner Nick Wolff. The U-18s would not be denied, however, adding two more goals in the first 5:25 of the final frame, including Cole Caufield s second of the night coming on a UMD turnover, to make it 4-1. Sophomore Justin Richards added the Bulldogs final goal with 5:02 left, finishing from close range after a nice feed from freshman Hunter Lellig, who found Richards cutting to the net. The U.S. U-18s outshot the Bulldogs, 39-28, in the game, including 13-6 in the opening period. Minnesota Duluth returns to NCHC play next weekend, hosting top-ranked and in-state rival St. Cloud State for a series. #NCHCHockey Jan. 7-13, 2019
