The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second Penrose Cup last season, after also winning it in the NCHC s inaugural season. North Dakota has also won two Penrose Cups ( , ), while Denver is the only other team to win it ( ). NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regularseason play (March 15-17, 2019). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-outof-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 22. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regular-season standings. The winners of the two semifinal games (4:08/7:38 p.m. CT) will then meet in the Championship Game (7:38 p.m. CT) on Saturday, March 23 for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games will face each other in the thirdplace game (3:38 p.m. CT) earlier in the day. 18 Previous Week Round-Up SATURDAY, OCT. 6 The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) officially dropped the puck on its sixth season Saturday night, as two teams opened the season with regular-season victories and another earned a tie against a rival. Three other NCHC squads opened with exhibition wins. Colorado College highlighted the night with a 10-2 drubbing of Alaska Anchorage on the road, while Miami also earned a win over a WCHA foe with a 5-1 win in Oxford over Alabama-Huntsville. In a top-15 clash, top-ranked Minnesota Duluth and No. 13 Minnesota battled to a 1-1 overtime tie at AMSOIL Arena. In exhibition action, No. 19 Western Michigan cruised to a 4-1 win over Lethbridge, while No. 9/11 Denver topped Alberta, 6-4. No. 11/12 North Dakota needed overtime to edge Manitoba, 3-2, despite outshooting the Bisons, Colorado College came out on fire in its opening game of the season, crushing Alaska Anchorage, 10-2, Saturday night at Sullivan Arena. CC tacked on two more in the final frame for its most goals since Senior forwards Westin Michaud, who scored both of his goals in the first period, and Trevor Gooch each tallied twice. Four other Tigers chipped in a goal and an assist in the win. CC outshot the Seawolves (0-1-0), 31-27, in the victory. Miami scored the game s final four goals to win its season opener for the first time since with a 5-1 victory over WCHA foe Alabama-Huntsville Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena. After the teams traded goals in the first six minutes, junior forward Karch Bachman scored the game-winner only 42 seconds after the Chargers (0-1-0) had tied it. He then added an assist on a power play goal in the second stanza to help Miami (1-0-0) distance themselves in the win. Senior defenseman Grant Hutton, junior forward Gordie Green and freshman blue liner Derek Daschke all matched Bachman with a goal and an assist each, Daschke s marking his first career points and goal. The Red- Hawks outshot UAH, Saturday. In a top-15 clash, top-ranked Minnesota Duluth and No. 13/13 Minnesota tied 1-1 after overtime Saturday at AMSOIL Arena in the season opener for both teams. Sophomore forward Blake Lizotte, who also tallied an assist, and Poehling capped the scoring in the third period for SCSU, which outshot MRU, The Huskies open the regular season next weekend at Alaska in Fairbanks. TUESDAY, OCT. 9 In the only NCAA hockey game Tuesday night, No. 18 Western Michigan struck first, but former CCHA rival and 20th-ranked Bowling Green scored the next three goals as the Broncos dropped their regular-season opener, 6-2, at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo. Sophomore forward Austin Rueschhoff put WMU (0-1-0) on the board with a power play tally in the opening period, but the Falcons (2-0-0) took the lead for good with two goals (one power play, one short-handed) in the final four minutes of the first frame. After BGSU made it 3-1 in the second, sophomore forward Josh Passolt tallied the Broncos second power play goal of the night to close the deficit to one after 40 minutes. But the Falcons tacked on three goals in the third to seal the win. WMU outshot BGSU, 36-19, despite the loss, and went 2-for-8 on the power play. Senior defenseman Corey Schueneman assisted on both WMU markers. The Broncos and Falcons complete their home-and-home series Tuesday, Oct. 23 in Bowling Green. Omaha scored two goals each period and cruised to a 6-1 exhibition-opening win over Manitoba Sunday evening at Baxter Arena in Omaha. Junior forward Teemu Pulkkinen recorded a hat trick, scoring the Mavericks first (on the power play), fifth and sixth tallies. Senior forward Fredrik Olofsson dished out four assists, including on both of Omaha s first period goals, along with both third period goals. Senior forward Ryan Galt and freshman forward Tyler Weiss combined for UNO s two second period goals with a goal and assist each. The Mavericks outshot the Bisons, 56-23, in the win, with Manitoba s lone goal coming midway through the third period on the power play. Omaha opens the regular season next weekend with two games at Union. Oct. 8-14, 2018 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 19
