Two of the series resulted in splits the first time around as North Dakota and No. 7/7 Denver each won a game in Grand Forks, while Omaha and No. 8/8 Western Michigan split a pair in Kalamazoo. A third series was a split of sorts as Miami and top-ranked St. Cloud State skated to a pair of ties in Oxford, with each earning one extra point after 5-on-5 overtime. The lone sweep came from No. 3/3 Minnesota Duluth, which topped the Tigers of Colorado College twice in Duluth to open NCHC play. SCSU, which hosts Miami this weekend, is the only team in the country without a loss at home this year as SCSU is a perfect at the National Hockey Center. St. Cloud State remained in the top spot in both national polls this week for the second straight week. SCSU has now been No. 1 in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine Poll for nine of the last 10 weeks, marking 13 times in 17 weeks an NCHC team has been atop that poll this season. The NCHC has four teams in the top 8 of both national polls this week, while no other conference has more than one team in the top 8. WMU's No. 8 ranking this week marks its highest since being No. 6 on Feb. 20, The four ranked teams in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll lead all conferences. (page 9) This weekend is the Headway Foundation's third annual Concussion Awareness Weekend and marks the second straight year the NCHC and its member teams have participated. Fans will notice special Headway Foundation stickers on the backs of players' helmets this weekend, showing their support for the cause. The purpose of Concussion Awareness Weekend is to promote a safer sports culture surrounding concussions through Headway s New Tough Campaign, spreading awareness, and providing educational resources for student-athletes. Concussion Awareness Weekend provides a platform for athletes to unite in creating a positive mental shift in athletes' approach to concussions. The NCHC is home to three of the top four teams in the country that allow the fewest shots on goal against per game. North Dakota leads the NCAA, giving up only shots against per game, while Minnesota Duluth is third at and St. Cloud State is fourth at shots allowed per game. Those three also rank in the top four nationally in shots on goal margin per game with UMD first at , while SCSU (+9.96) and UND (+9.44) are third and fourth, respectively. The Bulldogs and Huskies also own the top two penalty kill units in the country, with UMD first at 91.2 percent (83/91) and SCSU second at 89.6 percent (69/77). The eight power play goals allowed by each tie for the fewest in the NCAA. Three NCHC players are among seven players tied for the NCAA lead with five game-winning goals this season: Denver senior forward Jarid Lukosevicius, St. Cloud State senior forward Patrick Newell and Western Michigan sophomore forward Josh #NCHCHockey TheNCHC NCHC.tv

The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second Penrose Cup last season, after also winning it in the NCHC s inaugural season. North Dakota has also won two Penrose Cups ( , ), while Denver is the only other team to win it ( ).
