The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings, while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. Tonight s Games on NCHC.tv National Collegiate Hockey Conference Friday s Notes/Saturday Set-Up On the first full night of conference play, top-ranked Minnesota Duluth and No. 11/11 North Dakota both won their NCHC openers on Friday. UMD defeated Colorado College for its NCAA-best seventh straight win, while UND s win at No. 19 Miami gave the Fighting Hawks their fifth straight win after starting No. 5/5 Denver became the last NCAA team to suffer a loss, falling at No. 2/2 St. Cloud State. Minnesota Duluth blanked Colorado College, 3-0, for its first shutout of the season. Junior goaltender Hunter Shepard stopped all 19 shots he faced for his first shutout this year and ninth of his career, which ties the Bulldogs career program record also held by current Minnesota Wild netminder Alex Stalock. Shepard set UMD and NCHC single-season records last year with his other eight shutouts. St. Cloud State rallied past Denver, 4-3, behind three second-period goals on Friday. SCSU freshman forward Nolan Walker tallied a careerhigh three points in the win, notching his second multi-goal game as a Husky (also Oct. 25 at Boston College). Walker now has five goals on the season, which is tied for first nationally among NCAA rookies. He has 11 points on the season, which rank second among NCAA freshmen, trailing only his competitor this weekend, Denver forward Emilio Pettersen. Pettersen also tallied a goal Friday, and leads all NCAA rookies with 12 points (4g, 8a) on the season. Saturday s series finale between Denver and SCSU features two of the top four scoring offenses in the country, and the top two in the NCHC. The Huskies are third nationally, scoring 4.22 goals per game, while DU ranks fourth in the NCAA, averaging 4.14 goals per game. North Dakota won its fifth straight game with a 3-1 win at Miami. Freshman forward Mark Senden tallied his first career goal in the win, which served as the game-winner. UND is now on its first five-game winning streak since March of 2017 and hasn t enjoyed a six-game win streak since its NCAA championship season. Western Michigan snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over Omaha Friday. WMU improved to at home this season, while the seven goals marked a season high as the Broncos had tallied five goals in a game three times previously this year. WMU freshman forward Cole Gallant tallied two goals in the win, including the game-winner, for his first career multi-goal and multi-point game. Junior defenseman Cam Lee dished out a career-high-tying three assists in the win, as well. The three points also matched his career high, while his other three-helper game came on Jan. 19, 2018 against Colorado College last #NCHCHockey TheNCHC NCHC.tv

2 Friday s Recaps UMD, UND Win NCHC Openers, while SCSU, WMU Earn Home Victories Friday Bulldogs blank CC for seventh straight win; UND tops MU for fifth straight win; Huskies rally past DU to hand Pioneers first loss On the first full night of conference play, three home teams skated away with victories Friday night, while one team nabbed a win on the road. Top-ranked Minnesota Duluth showed little signs of rust coming off a bye, blanking Colorado College, 3-0, in Duluth to win its NCHC opener and extend its win streak to an NCAA-best seven games behind junior goaltender Hunter Shepard s ninth career shutout. The second-ranked team in the country also won at home as St. Cloud State scored the game s final three goals to rally past No. 5/5 Denver, 4-3, handing the Pioneers their first loss of the season. In Oxford, No. 11/11 North Dakota was the lone NCHC team to win on the road, downing No. 19 Miami, 3-1, in its first conference game of the season. In Kalamazoo, Western Michigan used a big first period to cruise past Omaha, 7-2, tallying a season high for goals to pick up its first NCHC win of NO. 2/2 ST. CLOUD STATE 4, NO. 5/5 DENVER 3 ST. CLOUD, Minn. - In the most exciting game of the night, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State scored three goals in the second period to rally past No. 5/5 Denver Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, handing the Pioneers their first loss of the season. Denver (5-1-1, NCHC) jumped out to a 3-1 lead behind goals from three different freshmen. Cole Guttman opened the scoring midway through the first frame, using a screen. SCSU rookie Nolan Walker, who tallied a career-high three points in the game, answered a minute later, finishing a nice feed from junior Ryan Poehling at the back door. With three minutes left in the first frame, Brett Stapley restored DU s lead, forcing a turnover in the neutral zone and deking the goalie on a breakaway, while Emilio Pettersen scored early in the second stanza on the man advantage to make it 3-1 Pioneers. The Huskies (8-1-0, NCHC) started the comeback with Walker s second goal of the night 39 ticks after Pettersen s tally. Walker then set up the tying goal midway through the period, feeding senior Patrick Newell in front of the net, while senior captain Jimmy Schuldt buried the game-winner on the power play with 2:10 left in the middle period, firing a snipe into the top corner of the net. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final frame, while SCSU finished with a advantage in shots on goal. The two teams complete their top-5 series on Saturday at 6:07 p.m. CT. NO. 1/1 MINNESOTA DULUTH 3, COLORADO COLLEGE 0 DULUTH, Minn. - Scoring a goal in each period and not allowing a goal all game, top-ranked Minnesota Duluth opened NCHC play with a convincing 3-0 victory over Colorado College Friday at AMSOIL Arena, extending UMD s win streak to an NCAA-best seven games. Sophomore forward Justin Richards opened the scoring midway through the first frame, deflecting a shot from classmate Matt Anderson. Junior defenseman Nick Wolff then doubled the Bulldogs lead midway through the second stanza with a wrister from inside the blue line, while senior captain Parker Mackay sealed the victory with a power play wrister in the slot in the final frame. Sophomore defenseman Scott Perunovich and senior forward Peter Krieger assisted on both of UMD s final two markers. UMD (7-1-1, NCHC) outshot the Tigers (4-4-1, NCHC), 32-19, in the win, as junior goaltender Hunter Shepard turned aside all 19 shots for his first shutout of the season and ninth of his career, tying the Bulldogs program record. CC and UMD finish their series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT. NO. 11/11 NORTH DAKOTA 3, NO. 19 MIAMI 1 OXFORD, Ohio A dominating first period powered No. 11/11 North Dakota to a 3-1 win over No. 19 Miami Friday at Steve Cady Arena in the Fighting Hawks NCHC opener. UND (5-2-1, NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame with a power play tally from sophomore defenseman Matt Kiersted in the slot and a snipe from freshman forward Mark Senden in the right circle. Senden s goal was the first of his career and served as the game-winner. Miami (7-4-0, NCHC) tried to rally in the second stanza when senior forward Ryan Siroky deflected a shot from distance that made its way through traffic and into the net with only 1.5 ticks left in the period to cut the deficit in half. The RedHawks were unable to find the equalizer in the final frame, however, as senior Rhett Gardner sealed UND s fifth straight win with an empty-netter in the final 10 seconds of the game.
