1 NCHC WEEKEND UPDATE National Collegiate Hockey Conference Saturday, October 22, 2016 Volume 4, Issue 4-A Michael Weisman O: C: NCHC Standings 1631 Mesa Avenue, Suite C Colorado Springs, CO Phone: Fax: Conference Overall Pts. GP W L T 3/SW Win Pct. GF GA GP W L T Win Pct. GF GA 1. Colorado College / Denver / Miami / Minnesota Duluth / North Dakota / Omaha / St. Cloud State / Western Michigan / Teams are awarded three points for each conference win in regulation or 5-on-5 overtime, and one point for a 5-on-5 overtime tie. Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings). A 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the 3-on-3 overtime/shootout receives just one point for the tie. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. NCHC teams improved to combined in non-conference play this season with its.618 win percentage tops among the six conferences. NCHC teams went against Hockey East foes Friday and are on the season with three more games against Hockey East Saturday. The NCHC is against the Big Ten after picking up both wins Friday and completes those series Saturday. NCHC teams improved to against WCHA foes on Friday, as well. Two NCHC players recorded hat tricks on Friday night as North Dakota sophomore forward Brock Boeser and St. Cloud State junior forward Judd Peterson each tallied three goals to rally their teams to victory. It was Boeser s second career hat trick, both of which have come against Bemidji State, while it was the first of Peterson s career. Last Saturday, UND sophomore forward Joel Janatuinen and Western Michigan sophomore forward Matheson Iacopelli each notched hat tricks as well, marking the second straight game night two NCHC players had a hat trick. Prior to the last two weeks, that had only occurred once in NCHC history (Feb. 1, 2014 when Omaha s Dominic Zombo and SCSU s Kalle Kossila each recorded one in the same game). Nine different NCAA players have a hat trick this season with four coming from the NCHC. UND is the only team with two different players to tally a hat trick this season. Denver freshman forward Henrik Borgström had a hand in both goals in the 10th-ranked Pioneers 2-1 win at Michigan State. He scored the first goal while assisting on the game-winner. He now has five points in his last two games, having a hand in all five DU goals, after going pointless in his first three collegiate contests. No. 14/14 St. Cloud State erased a three-goal third period deficit at No. 7/7 Minnesota to force overtime and freshman forward Jake Wahlin tallied in the extra session to complete the comeback win. It was the first time since a win at Alaska-Anchorage on Nov. 30, 2012 that the Huskies were able to come back from a three-goal deficit to win a game. It was SCSU s third straight win at Mariucci Arena over the Gophers, as well. The Catamounts battled back to grab a 4-3 lead in the third period before senior forward Austin Ortega tied the game in the closing minutes. Omaha (2-0-1) outshot Vermont (1-1- 1), The two sides complete their series Saturday night. Despite jumping out to an early lead, Colorado College was the lone NCHC team to fall on Friday, as No. 10/10 Boston College (3-2- 0) scored the final four goals to defeat CC (1-4-0), 4-1.
