Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings), making all games worth three points. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. NCHC teams finished with a combined record of in non-conference play this season, with the.649 win percentage second among the six conferences behind only the Big Ten at.688. The NCHC just missed matching last year s non-conference record when NCHC teams finished a combined (.663) in the regular season. (page 9) Six NCHC teams are ranked in both the USCHO.com Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll this week, with five teams in the top 12 of the USCHO.com Poll. The six ranked teams are the most from one conference in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll and tie for the most in the USCHO Poll. With no NCHC teams higher than fourth in the poll, it s only the fifth week since the start of the season that an NCHC team has not been No. 1 in the USCHO Poll. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD), while only three other NCAA teams have total. (page 9) Two NCHC skaters are approaching the century club for points. Denver junior forward Troy Terry sits only four points from 100 with 41 goals and 55 assists for 96 career points, while Omaha senior forward Tyler Vesel has 95 career points (36g, 59a). The only active NCHC player with 100 career points is Denver junior forward Dylan Gambrell (39-80=119). North Dakota sophomore forward Ludvig Hoff was named to Norway s Olympic hockey team this week, as the Oslo native becomes the third current NCHC player set to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Hoff joins Denver s Terry and St. Cloud State junior defenseman Will Borgen, who are both on Team USA, as Olympians headed to South Korea this February. (page 8) The NCHC is home to some of the top-scoring defensemen in the country as four of the top six blue liners nationally in points per game play in the NCHC. SCSU junior Jimmy Schuldt continues to lead all NCAA defensemen averaging 1.05 points per game, while Minnesota Duluth freshman Scott Perunovich is third at 0.96 points per game, which is tops among rookies. Western Michigan junior Corey Schueneman is fourth at 0.95 ppg, while his 0.82 assists per game are first among NCAA blue liners. Miami senior Louie Belpedio rounds out the group in sixth averaging 0.91 points per game. Two of the top power play goal-scorers in the country reside in the NCHC as Omaha senior forward David Pope and Denver junior forward Jarid Lukosevicius each have eight power play goals this year, which ties with four other players for the NCAA lead. NCHC players earned two of the NCAA s Three Stars of the Week this week as DU senior goalie Tanner Jaillet was Second Star, while UMD sophomore forward Joey Anderson was Third Star. 3 Team Notes/Match-Ups Colorado College Tigers Head Coach: Mike Haviland (4th year) Record at CC: Record: ( /0, 8th) Record: ( /0 NCHC, 7th) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 19/10 Colorado College split its series at Western Michigan last weekend with both games going to overtime. The Tigers fell on Friday, 3-2, in the extra session, but rebounded for a 6-5 overtime win on Saturday. Saturday s victory marked CC s first ever win at Western Michigan, while the six goals tied a season high (Oct. 13 vs. UAA). After splitting the pair of one-goal games, the Tigers are 7-3 in one-goal games this season. Colorado College also reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since the season when they finished Sophomore forward Nick Halloran recorded three points in Saturday s win, assisting on a pair of goals and scoring the game-winner in overtime. He is tied for third nationally and is second in the NCHC in scoring with 34 points (14g, 20a) this season, after only totaling five goals and nine points in 29 games as a freshman last season. Sophomore goalie Alex Leclerc, who leads the NCHC and is sixth in the country with 653 saves, hit the 40-save mark for the fifth time in his career last Friday at Western Michigan. Denver Pioneers Head Coach: Jim Montgomery (5th year) Record at DU: Record: ( /2, 1st) Record: ( /0 NCHC, 1st) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 15/7 Denver swept Omaha last weekend, blanking the Mavericks both nights, 5-0 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday. The victories extended DU s win streak over Omaha to 12 games. Denver has posted three shutouts in its last five games, recording a 1.00 goals against average during that stretch. On the season, DU ranks seventh nationally and first in the NCHC, allowing 2.21 goals per game. Senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet pitched both shutouts against Omaha with a season-high 34 saves on Friday and another 30 saves on Saturday. He now has four shutouts on the season, which is first in the NCHC and ties for fourth nationally, while he now has eight whitewashes for his career. He is riding a shutout streak of 130:02 into this weekend, dating back to a Jan. 6 win at Miami. Jaillet is the first DU goalie to log back-toback shutouts since Sam Brittain on Oct , 2013 vs. Merrimack. Sophomore forward Henrik Borgstrom recorded five points against Omaha with a goal and four assists. He is now on a seven-game point streak with 12 points (3g, 9a) in that span. He ranks second nationally with 35 points (16g, 19a) on the season. 4 Team Notes/Match-Ups Miami RedHawks Head Coach: Enrico Blasi (19th year) Record at MU: Record: ( /1, 7th) Record: ( NCHC, 8th) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 17/4 Miami was idle last weekend, but was swept in NCHC play for the first time this season at Omaha in its last action. The RedHawks fell, 11-7, in a record-setting game Jan. 12, and dropped a tight, 4-3 decision on Jan. 13. The RedHawks enter this weekend s series at Colorado College on a season-long three-game losing streak. The seven goals on Jan. 12 tied a season high for Miami, the third time the RedHawks have hit the mark. They first did so in a win Oct. 20 at Maine and then again Oct. 28 vs. UConn. Miami also topped seven goals in both exhibitions. The 11 goals allowed were a season high. Previously it was six in a loss at Maine. Miami is when scoring three or more goals this season, but when netting two or fewer. With 20 points (8g, 12a) in 22 games, senior defenseman Louie Belpedio is sixth nationally among defensemen with 0.91 points per game. He and junior teammate Grant Hutton are also tied for the NCAA lead among blue liners with eight goals each. The victories extended UMD s win streak over the Fighting Hawks to a program-best eight games. The Bulldogs were also riding a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) before having it snapped on Tuesday in a 1-0 loss at Minnesota State. The loss put UMD s final non-conference record for the season at Junior forward Peter Krieger and sophomore forward Riley Tufte each tallied a goal in Friday s win against UND, while Tufte also scored on Saturday. Krieger now has four goals in his last six games after four goals in his first 20 games this season. Tufte now has six goals in his last six games as a Bulldog. Freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich tallied two assists in Friday s win over UND, while notching his first career multi-goal game Saturday, including the game-winner. It was his first career goal and point as a Bronco in his 18th career varsity game (eighth this year), after playing his freshman season on WMU s club team. Tanner Jaillet Denver Senior Goaltender Red Deer, Alberta Anderson led UMD to a sweep of UND last weekend, piling up six points in the series, including five on the power play. On Friday, the New Jersey Devils draft pick had a goal and an assist in a 5-3 victory. His two-point night and four shots on goal earned him Third Star of the Game Friday. The next night, Anderson tallied a career-high four points, all on assists, in a 5-2 victory as he was named Second Star of the Game. He set up UMD s final four goals in the comeback win, with three primary assists, including on the game-winning goal. Anderson finished the weekend with a goal, five assists and eight shots. Mitchell led Denver to a sweep of Omaha, tallying a career-best five points in the series, while helping the Pioneer defense record a pair of shutouts. On Friday, the Chicago Blackhawks prospect recorded a career-high four points, including a career-best three assists, in a 5-0 win. He also scored a goal as he was named Third Star of the Game. On Saturday, Mitchell tallied another assist on a power play goal in a 4-0 win. Mitchell finished the weekend with a goal, four power play assists, two blocked shots and +2s, going +1 each night, while putting four shots on goal and leading a penalty kill that finished 8-for-8. Perunovich helped UMD sweep North Dakota, tallying four points in the series. On Friday, the draft-eligible defenseman handed out a pair of assists, both in the second period of a 5-3 win. The next night, Perunovich recorded his first career multi-goal game, striking twice on the power play in the second period 16 seconds apart to lead a UMD comeback. His first goal tied the game at 2-2, while ticks later he scored the game-winner in an eventual 5-2 victory to earn First Star of the Game. Perunovich ended the series with two goals, two assists, four shots on goal and one blocked shot. Other Standout Performers (Week of Jan ) Henrik Borgström, So., F, Denver Tallied five points and was +3 in a sweep of Omaha, handing out three assists on Friday, including on the game-winner, while scoring a goal and adding another helper Saturday. Troy Conzo, Fr., F, CC Tallied three points and was +2 in a split at WMU, scoring a goal each night, while also adding an assist in Saturday s win for his first career multi-point game. Andrew Farny, Jr., D, CC Blocked five shots, put five shots on goal and was +2 in a split at Western Michigan. Jaillet was perfect in Denver s series against Omaha, not allowing a goal as he pitched a pair of shutouts to backstop DU to a sweep. In doing so, he recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time iand is the first Denver goalie to do so since Oct , In Friday s 5-0 win, Jaillet made a season-high 34 saves, which earned him Second Star of the Night. In the series finale, he stopped all 30 shots he faced in a 4-0 win as he was named First Star of the Game. The two shutouts give him four on the season, while he has now played 130:02 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. 8 Players of the Month/Awards NCHC Monthly Honors - December Player of the Month Nick Halloran Colorado College Sophomore Forward Draper, Utah Halloran racked up eight points in six games, helping the Tigers post a record in December. He led all NCHC players with six goals during the month, while his 1.00 goals per game in December also led the conference. Halloran tallied a goal in five of his six games during the month with one multigoal game. He fired 32 shots on goal in the six games with his 5.33 shots on goal per game tops in the NCHC in December. Halloran opened December strong, recording three points, including two goals for his second career multi-goal game, in a 4-4 tie at then No. 1 Denver Dec. 8. He set up the game-tying goal in the final minute and put 10 shots on goal to earn First Star of the Game. The following weekend the Draper, Utah, native potted a goal each night against Arizona State Dec. 16 and 17, scoring on the power play in the series finale. Halloran wrapped up his month by stretching his goal-scoring streak to a career-long four games. He notched two points in a loss to Air Force Dec. 29, scoring CC s first goal and assisting on another, while he scored the game s first goal in a 2-1 win over Merrimack the next night when he was Second Star of the Game. Halloran was tabbed NCHC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts over his final four games of the month. Rookie of the Month Jaakko Heikkinen Denver Freshman Forward Helsinki, Finland Heikkinen had a breakout month, recording seven points in eight games in December, after entering with only three points all season. His seven points led all NCHC rookies and ranked second nationally among freshmen, while his three goals tied for second in the NCAA during the month among freshmen. The Finn also dished out four assists and had a +1 plus/minus during the month to help DU go After being held off the scoresheet in his first series of December, Heikkinen tallied the go-ahead goal in the third period Dec. 8 against Colorado College in an eventual 4-4 tie. The following weekend, the draft-eligible forward compiled three points against Dartmouth. He scored the game s only goal, and hence the game-winner, on the power play in a 1-0 series-opening win Dec. 15 to earn Second Star of the Game. He then handed out a pair of helpers in the series finale for his first two collegiate assists and his first career multi-point game. Heikkinen wrapped up December with a career-best three points in a 6-0 shutout of Air Force Dec. 30. He scored a power play goal and dished out two assists, including the primary helper on the game-winning goal and another primary helper on the final goal, while logging a +1 plus/minus. Heikkinen finished December with 10 shots on goal and went (.571) in the faceoff circle. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regularseason standings. 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, JAN. 19 Home teams won all three NCHC games Friday night, which saw an overtime thriller, a shutout and a high-scoring contest on national TV. In the first game of the night, No. 11/11 Western Michigan used a strong power play to rally in the third period and then top Colorado College, 3-2, only 35 seconds into overtime when junior forward Richard Zehnal scored his first career goal. The Broncos moved into a second-place tie with No. 5/5 Denver, which blanked No. 15/15 Omaha, 5-0, behind three power play goals and senior goalie Tanner Jaillet s third shutout of the season. In the night-cap of a doubleheader on CBS Sports Network, No. 14/13 Minnesota Duluth also potted three power play goals to edge No. 7/7 North Dakota, 5-3, in Duluth. In an unlikely ending, junior forward Richard Zehnal scored his first career goal in overtime to lift No. 11/11 Western Michigan to a 3-2 win over Colorado College Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena. Zehnal, who played on WMU s club team as a freshman, tallied only 35 ticks into the extra session for his first collegiate point in his 18th career varsity game. The Broncos (13-9-1, NCHC) scored both goals in regulation on the power play, the first coming late in the second stanza on a one-timer from senior defenseman Scott Moldenhauer that put WMU in front. The Tigers (9-11-3, /0 NCHC) struck twice in the third period to take the lead, the first on a delayed penalty early in the frame to tie the game, while going ahead with less than eight minutes left in regulation on a rebound. The Broncos pulled even two and a half minutes later, however, on the man advantage, to force overtime. Modenhauer set up the game-tying goal for a two-point night. WMU outshot CC, 43-32, in the victory, while going 2-for-5 on the power play and 7-for-7 on the penalty kill. Striking three times on the power play, while not allowing a goal, No. 5/5 Denver rolled to its 11th straight victory over No. 15/15 Omaha, 5-0, Friday at Magness Arena. Senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet stopped all 34 shots he faced for his fifth career shutout and third this season, as Denver (13-6-4, /0 NCHC) outshot the Mavericks ( , NCHC), Junior forward Jarid Lukosevicius scored a pair of power play goals to lead the way, opening the scoring late in the first frame. Freshman defenseman Ian Mitchell then doubled DU s lead in the second stanza, while he also assisted on all three power play goals for a career-high four points. Denver tacked on three more tallies in the third period, including the first two on the power play, to seal the victory. Sophomore forward Henrik Borgström dished out three helpers in the win, as well. The Pioneers finished 3-for-5 on the man advantage and killed all four Omaha power plays. Extending its unbeaten streak to six games, No. 14/13 Minnesota Duluth topped No. 7/7 North Dakota, 5-3, Friday at AMSOIL Arena, downing the Fighting Hawks for the seventh straight time. The teams traded first period goals with UMD sophomore forward Joey Anderson, who also had an assist, opening the scoring on the power play off a feed from junior forward Parker Mackay. The Fighting Hawks (12-7-6, /2 NCHC) pulled even minutes later with their own power play goal. The second period proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs (12-9-3, NCHC) struck twice, with Mackay setting up the first and scoring the second on the power play for a three-point night to give UMD a 3-1 lead. Freshman forward Grant Mismash pulled UND within one 40 seconds into the final frame, but senior forward Karson Kuhlman scored the eventual game-winner a minute later to regain a two-goal cushion. SATURDAY, JAN. 20 With No. 3/3 St. Cloud State, which entered the night in first place in the NCHC, playing out of conference this weekend, that opened the door for other teams to take over the top spot and No. 5/5 Denver took advantage Saturday night. The Pioneers completed a sweep of No. 15/15 Omaha, as senior goalie Tanner Jaillet pitched his second straight shutout to give DU a 4-0 win, the Pioneers 12th straight victory over the Mavericks. With the win, Denver moved past the Huskies into sole possession of first place in the NCHC. Also earning a sweep on Saturday was No. 14/13 Minnesota Duluth, which won its eighth straight game over No. 7/7 North Dakota with a 5-2 comeback win, scoring the game s final five goals, including three on the power play to extend its unbeaten streak to seven games.
