Minnesota Duluth visits Denver in another rematch of last year s National Championship game, though the Pioneers swept UMD in a pair of one-goal games in Duluth back on Dec St. Cloud State also already earned a road sweep against this weekend s opponent as the Huskies host Omaha, which they swept in Omaha also Dec The third series between Western Michigan and Miami ended in a split in Kalamazoo on Dec Six NCHC teams are ranked in the USCHO.com Poll this week, tying for the most ranked teams from one conference, while all six teams are in the top 15 of the USCHO.com Poll. The NCHC s five ranked teams in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll are two more than any other conference. With no NCHC teams higher than fourth in the USCHO.com poll, this is only the sixth week since the start of the season that an NCHC team has not been No. 1 in the USCHO Poll. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD), while only four other NCAA teams have total (Boston University, Penn State, Notre Dame and Cornell, this week). (page 9) Omaha senior forward Tyler Vesel became the second active NCHC player to join the Century Club last weekend as he sits on exactly 100 career points (38g, 62a) in 139 games played. He joins Denver junior forward Dylan Gambrell (40-81=121) in the 100-point club. Fellow DU junior forward Troy Terry is next in line, needing only three points for 100 with 42 goals and 55 assists for 97 career points in 102 games. Omaha senior forward Jake Randolph is only seven points away (25-68=93). Four of the top five largest individual point improvements from last season to this season are by NCHC players. CC sophomore Nick Halloran leads the country with a 30-point improvement as he is tied for the NCAA lead with 39 points this year after only nine all last season. Western Michigan sophomore Dawson DiPietro is second with a 26-point improvement as he has 27 points this year after only one assist as a rookie. CC junior Trey Bradley and Omaha sophomore Zach Jordan are tied for fourth as both have a 19-point improvement from last season (Bradley was hurt much of last season). DiPietro, Halloran and Jordan are all tied for the biggest goal improvement in the NCAA this year, each with an 11-goal improvement from their freshman seasons. Omaha senior forward David Pope leads the NCAA with 10 power play goals this season, two more than any other player. He needs just one more power play goal to tie the NCHC single-season record, set by St. Cloud State s Jonny Brodzinski in when he tallied 11. Colorado College junior Mason Bergh and Denver junior Jarid Lukosevicius are both tied for second nationally with eight power play goals each. 3 Team Notes/Match-Ups Colorado College Tigers Head Coach: Mike Haviland (4th year) Record at CC: Record: ( /0, 8th) Record: ( /0 NCHC, 7th) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 19/10 Colorado College picked up a 6-3 win and 4-4 overtime tie against Miami last weekend, while also earning an extra NCHC point with a 3-on-3 overtime goal Saturday. The 3-on-3 OT goal marked the first time CC collected at least five points in an NCHC series since sweeping Miami at home on Dec. 4-5, Sophomore forward Nick Halloran recorded five points against Miami with a career-high-tying three assists Friday and a career-high-tying two goals Saturday. He now leads the NCHC and is tied for first nationally with 39 points this season (16g, 23a), after only totaling five goals and nine points in 29 games as a freshman last season. His 30-point improvement from last season is the best in the NCAA, while his 11-goal improvement ties for tops nationally. Junior forward Mason Bergh is fourth in the NCHC and ninth in the country with 34 points (15g, 19a) this season after a three-goal, fourpoint weekend against Miami. Bergh and Halloran mark the first time CC has had multiple 30-point scorers since season (Rylan Schwartz, Alexander Krushelnyski, William Rapuzzi). Denver Pioneers Head Coach: Jim Montgomery (5th year) Record at DU: Record: ( /2, 1st) Record: ( /0 NCHC, 1st) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 15/7 Denver settled for a pair of ties at North Dakota last weekend, but still earned four points, scoring in 3-on-3 overtime both nights. After 3-3 and 1-1 draws, junior forward Troy Terry scored in Friday s 3-on-3 overtime, while freshman defenseman Ian Mitchell tallied in Saturday s second extra session. The Pioneers are now in 3-on-3 overtime in conference play this season, while Denver is riding a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) overall. Heading into its National Championship game rematch with Minnesota Duluth, the Pioneers have not lost a conference game at home since Nov. 17 against North Dakota, going since. The Pioneers are against ranked opponents this season. Senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet has posted a 1.56 goals-against average and a.938 save percentage since Dec. 1, while logging all four of his shutouts on the season since then. Overall, he ranks eighth nationally with a.925 save percentage on the year, while his 1.98 goals-against average ranks sixth in the country. 4 Team Notes/Match-Ups Miami RedHawks Head Coach: Enrico Blasi (19th year) Record at MU: Record: ( /1, 7th) Record: ( NCHC, 8th) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 17/4 Miami picked up one point at Colorado College, falling 6-3 in Friday s opener, before earning a 4-4 overtime tie on Saturday. Since a Jan. 5 win over Denver, the RedHawks have gone 0-4-1, being outscored, in those five games. Miami went 4-for-9 on the power play at Colorado College and now owns the top power play unit in the country as the RedHawks are converting on 27.8 percent of their man advantages (30-for-108). With 22 points (8g, 14a) in 24 games, senior defenseman Louie Belpedio is sixth nationally among defensemen with 0.92 points per game. Junior Grant Hutton leads all NCAA blue liners with nine goals this season, while Belpedio is tied for second among defensemen with his eight goals. Hutton s seven power play goals lead all defensemen, as well. Junior forward Kiefer Sherwood enters the weekend on a career-best seven-game point streak with 11 of his 18 points this season coming during this stretch, including three goals and eight assists. Since starting NCHC play 2-7-0, the Bulldogs have gone with Saturday s loss snapping a six-game win streak in the conference. Senior captain Karson Kuhlman tallied a career-high-tying two goals in Friday s win for his third career multi-goal game, with his other two coming during his sophomore campaign. Freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich had an assist in Friday s win, giving him 24 points (6g, 18a) on the season, which is first nationally among rookie blue liners. He is fifth in scoring among all NCAA rookies. As a freshman class, the Bulldogs are tops in the NCHC and tied for fourth in the country, totaling 80 points on 17 goals and 63 assists. Since leading scorer sophomore Wade Allison was lost for the season to injury at St. Cloud State on Jan. 13, the Broncos are just Sophomore forward Dawson DiPietro scored a goal in Saturday s loss, giving him 11 goals and 27 points on the season after only one point, an assist, all last season. His 26-point improvement from a season ago is the second-biggest improvement in the country so far, while his 11-goal improvement ties for the biggest jump in the country. WMU scored three power play goals at Omaha with one Friday and two more on Saturday. WMU s power play has now netted at least two goals in six of its last seven games, going 14-for-36 during the stretch for 38.9 percent. Hunter Shepard Minnesota Duluth Sophomore Goaltender Cohasset, Minn. Halloran led CC to a five-point weekend against Miami with a five-point showing of his own. On Friday, he tied his career high with three assists, setting up the Tigers first three goals, in a 6-3 victory. Two of his assists were primary helpers, while he was named Second Star of the Game. The next night, he scored the game s first two goals in the first three minutes of the contest in an eventual 4-4 overtime tie. Halloran earned First Star of the Game after putting six shots on goal and logging a +2 plus/minus. He finished the weekend with two goals, three assists, six shots on goal and a +3 plus/minus. Co-Offensive Player of the Week Tyler Vesel Omaha Senior Forward Rochester, Minn. Vesel compiled five points to lead Omaha to a sweep of WMU. On Friday, the Oilers draft pick handed out a pair of assists, including on the game-winning goal in the third period of an eventual 6-2 win. A night later, Vesel had a hand in Omaha s final three goals in a 7-3 victory, scoring back-to-back goals, with his first tally short-handed. His last assist gave him 100 points for his career. The assistant captain ended the series with two goals, three assists, eight shots on goal and +3. Messner contributed at both ends of the ice to help Omaha sweep Western Michigan. On Friday, he scored the game-winning goal on the power play in the third period to break a 2-2 tie in an eventual 6-2 victory. He also fired three shots on goal, was +1 and blocked six shots to earn the game s First Star. In the series finale, the team captain handed out a pair of assists on UNO s first and third goals, blocked four more shots and was +1 in a 7-3 win. Messner finished the series with a goal, two assists, 10 blocked shots and was +2, while firing five shots on goal. He also helped Omaha s penalty kill go 11-for-14 vs. WMU. Swaney helped UMD earn a split against in-state rival St. Cloud State with a three-point weekend, while also getting it done defensively. In Friday s 5-1 victory, the Minnesota Wild draft pick handed out a pair of assists, setting up the Bulldogs first and last goals with the latter coming short-handed. Brian Williams, Fr., F, CC Scored the first two goals of his career in Friday s win over Miami, tallying the game-winner and sealing the victory with an empty-netter NCHC Players of the Week (previous winners) Shepard started all three games for UMD, all against top-10 opponents, and allowed only four goals in those games. He made 23 saves in a 1-0 loss last Tuesday at Minnesota State. In Friday s series opener against St. Cloud State, Shepard again allowed only one goal while stopping 24 shots, including 12 in the third period, in a 5-1 victory. He then capped his week by making 26 more saves in a 2-1 loss to SCSU on Saturday, including half of them coming in the second period. Shepard finished the week with a.948 save percentage and a 1.35 GAA, while totaling 73 saves and helping kill off all 13 opponent power plays. 8 Players of the Month/Awards NCHC Monthly Honors - January Player of the Month Nick Halloran Colorado College Sophomore Forward Draper, Utah Halloran tied for the NCHC scoring lead and tied for fifth nationally in January with 12 points in only six games, while his 2.00 points per game and 1.17 assists per game both led the conference, with the 2.00 points per game also ranking second nationally during the month. He scored five goals in January, while also tying for the NCHC lead with seven assists in the month, including six on the power play. Halloran recorded points in five of six games in January, including four multi-point games. Halloran logged four points in a pair of games against UMD Jan In the series opener, he notched three points, including a career-high-tying two goals, in a 6-5 loss, while adding an assist the next night. After being held scoreless in CC s series opener at WMU Jan. 19, his only game without a point during the month, he again recorded three points the next night in a 6-5 overtime win, handing out two assists before scoring the game-winner in overtime to nab First Star of the Game and give the Tigers their first ever win at WMU. Halloran concluded his month with a five-point outing against Miami Jan , which earned him NCHC co-offensive Player of the Week. In Friday s 6-3 victory, he tied a career high with three assists, as he was named Second Star of the Game. The sophomore then scored two goals in Saturday s 4-4 overtime tie for his second multigoal game of the month and First Star of the Game as he was +2. Rookie of the Month Phil Knies Miami Freshman Forward Phoenix, Ariz. Knies doubled his season point total and tripled his goal total in the month of January, recording eight points in six games, which tied for the NCHC lead among rookies and tied for fifth nationally among freshmen. His six goals in the month led all NCHC players and all rookies nationally, as did his 1.00 goals per game. His 1.33 points per game led all NCAA freshmen in January, as well. Knies started his month handing out an assist in Miami s win over Denver Jan. 5. The next weekend, he was named NCHC Rookie of the Week after a four-goal, five-point showing at Omaha. He tallied a career-high three points in a record-setting 18-goal contest Jan. 12 against the Mavericks, including his first career multi-goal game. The next night, Knies did it again, scoring two more goals, including one on the power play, in a narrow loss as he earned Third Star of the Game. Knies closed out January with a goal in each game at Colorado College Jan , tallying again on the power play in last Saturday s tie to stretch his goal-scoring streak to four games. He put 12 shots on goal during the month for a.500 shooting percentage, while he finished January with a +2 plus/minus and also blocked six shots. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regularseason standings. 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, JAN. 26 On the first full night of conference play since early December, home teams protected their ice, picking up three victories as the top half of the standings tightened, while No. 4/5 Denver extended its lead in first place with a tie and 3-on-3 overtime win. The Pioneers rallied, took the lead and then settled for a 3-3 overtime tie at No. 11/7 North Dakota, before scoring in 3-on-3 overtime to pick up the extra point in the NCHC standings. No. 9/13 Minnesota Duluth continued its climb up the NCHC standings, vaulting into a tie for third with a 5-1 win over No. 5/3 St. Cloud State in Duluth. The Bulldogs are now tied with No. 12/11 Western Michigan, which fell at No. 19/15 Omaha, 6-2, as the Mavericks scored four goals in the final six minutes. Colorado College kept pace with Omaha in a tie for sixth as the Tigers knocked off Miami, 6-3, behind a strong power play effort in Colorado Springs. Jumping out to a 3-0 first period lead, No. 9/13 Minnesota Duluth never looked back in a 5-1 win over in-state rival No. 5/3 St. Cloud State Friday at AMSOIL Arena. Behind senior forward Karson Kuhlman s two goals, the Bulldogs ( , NCHC) won their sixth straight NCHC game to move into a tie for third place. Kuhlman opened the scoring only 2:36 into the game, while midway through the period junior forward Peter Krieger doubled the lead. Sophomore forward Joey Anderson, who set up Krieger s goal, capped the first frame, scoring with only 11 ticks left to make it 3-0 UMD. The Bulldogs added a pair of short-handed goals in the final three minutes of the second period, the latter coming from Kuhlman, to make it 5-0 after 40 minutes, before the Huskies (14-6-3, NCHC) broke through in the final frame. Despite the loss, SCSU outshot UMD, 25-18, including 13-5 in the third period, but sophomore Hunter Shepard made 24 saves to earn the win in net. In a game of back-and-forth momentum, No. 4/5 Denver earned two points on the road against No. 11/7 North Dakota with a 3-3 overtime tie and 3-on-3 overtime win Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Fighting Hawks (12-8-7, /2 NCHC) jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first 5:18 of the game with junior forward Shane Gersich, who had a two-point night, scoring on the power play for the second goal. The Pioneers (14-6-5, /0 NCHC) started to rally in the second period when junior forward Dylan Gambrell found the back of the net, while two goals in the first six minutes of the third period put DU ahead with junior forward Troy Terry notching the go-ahead goal on the power play. UND had an answer, however, as junior defenseman Hayden Shaw scored with an extra attacker to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime. After the first OT went scoreless, the teams went to a 3-on-3 OT for the extra standings point where Terry sniped a goal to give DU two points. UND finished with a slight, edge in shots on goal. Behind a strong power play, Colorado College cruised past Miami, 6-3, Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena. The Tigers scored three times on the power play, including two from junior forward Mason Bergh. CC ( , /0 NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame with junior forward Westin Michaud scoring the second goal on the man advantage. Miami (9-12-2, NCHC) answered a minute later, however, to make it a one-goal game after 20 minutes. Bergh and freshman forward Brian Williams each tallied in the second stanza for the Tigers with Williams adding an empty-netter late for the first two goals of his career. Bergh made it 5-1 before Miami started a comeback with back-to-back power play goals, but the Red- Hawks would get no closer. Sophomore forward Nick Halloran and sophomore defenseman Kristian Blumenschein each dished out three assists in the win. CC finished with a edge in shots on goal, while going 3-for-3 on the power play. After the two teams combined for four goals through 50 minutes of play, No. 19/15 Omaha scored four goals by themselves in the final seven minutes to pull away from No. 12/11 Western Michigan for a 6-2 victory Friday at Baxter Arena. The Mavericks ( , NCHC) scored once in each of the first two periods to grab a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes. The Broncos ( , NCHC) roared back in the third period with goals from senior defenseman Neal Goff and freshman forward Austin Rueschhoff, the latter on the power play that tied the game midway through the final frame. Omaha took over from there, however, with senior captain Joel Messner tallying the game-winner on the power play with 6:18 remaining, while the Mavericks added a pair of empty-net goals and another power play goal in the final 1:03 to seal the victory. WMU outshot Omaha, 34-29, despite the loss, but the Mavericks went 3-for-7 on the man advantage and junior goalie Evan Weninger compiled 32 saves in the win. SATURDAY, JAN. 27 Only one team was able to complete a weekend sweep Saturday, while another series resulted in a split and two NCHC games ended in 3-on-3 overtime. No. 19/15 Omaha continued to roll at home, piling up seven goals in a 7-3 win over No. 12/11 Western Michigan to earn its third straight sweep at Baxter Arena. No. 5/3 St. Cloud State crept closer to first place with a 2-1 win at No. 9/13 Minnesota Duluth, securing a series split. No. 4/5 Denver remained atop the NCHC standings as they tied No. 11/7 North Dakota a second straight night, doing so 1-1 on Saturday, while collecting the extra standings point with a 3-on- 3 overtime goal for the second straight night as well. In Colorado Springs, Colorado College rallied in the third period to tie Miami, 4-4, and also earned an extra standings point with a 3-on-3 overtime tally. In a narrow top-10 in-state battle, No. 5/3 St. Cloud State edged No. 9/13 Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, late in the third period Saturday at AMSOIL Arena to earn a weekend split. With the game tied, 1-1, junior forward Patrick Newell potted a rebound with 5:10 remaining in the game to give SCSU (15-6-3, NCHC) the victory.
