1 NCHC WEEKEND UPDATE National Collegiate Hockey Conference Saturday, February 11, 2017 Volume 4, Issue 19-A Michael Weisman O: C: NCHC Standings 1631 Mesa Avenue, Suite C Colorado Springs, CO Phone: Fax: Conference Overall Pts. GP W L T 3/SW Win Pct. GF GA GP W L T Win Pct. GF GA 1. Minnesota Duluth / Denver / Western Michigan / North Dakota / St. Cloud State / Omaha / Miami / Colorado College / Teams are awarded three points for each conference win in regulation or 5-on-5 overtime, and one point for a 5-on-5 overtime tie. Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings). A 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the 3-on-3 overtime/shootout receives just one point for the tie. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. The highest-scoring game also included Omaha in the NCHC s inaugural season when the Mavericks and St. Cloud State piled up 14 goals in an 8-6 Omaha win on Feb. 1, 2014, also in Omaha. WMU sophomore forward Griffen Molino recorded his second career hat trick in the win, scoring the final two goals in the final six minutes to overcome a 6-5 deficit. Molino s first career hat trick came in a 4-1 win over Miami on Feb. 20, 2016 as a freshman. He also added an assist on Friday for a four-point night, tying his career, which he first set Dec. 12, 2015 with two goals and two assists in a win over Colorado College. Of Molino s three goals, two came short-handed. He entered Friday s game with one career short-handed goal, which came in his other hat trick. As a team, WMU scored three short-handed goals Friday, tying the program record (Feb. 1, 1985 vs. BGSU). The Broncos came into the weekend with one short-handed goal all season. Senior forward Sheldon Dries scored the third short-handed goal for WMU Friday as part of a two-goal, two-assist (on Molino s final two goals) night. The four points also tied his career high, which he first set as a sophomore with two goals and two assists in a win over Union Nov. 29, Omaha junior defenseman Luc Snuggerud tied a career high with three points in the loss (also Nov. 12 at Miami earlier this season). He scored a goal and added two assists, giving him 10 goals on the season, which leads all NCAA blue liners. His 28 points rank second among NCAA defensemen this year. Snuggerud s goal came on the power play, giving Omaha 39 power play goals this season, which ranks second nationally. No. 2/2 Denver stretched its win streak over rival Colorado College to 11 with a 2-1 win at Magness Arena. Sophomore forward Jarid Lukosevicius scored the game-winning goal, giving him six game-winners this season, which leads the NCAA by himself. Senior defenseman Will Butcher assisted on both DU goals, giving him five points (1g, 4a) during his three-game point streak. He ranks second in the NCHC (behind Snuggerud) and fifth nationally with 26 points (5g, 21a) this season. Denver is now tied for the NCAA lead with 19 wins this season. With a win Saturday, DU would assure itself of its 16th consecutive 20-win season, which is the longest active streak in the NCAA. North Dakota is second with 14 straight 20-win seasons entering the campaign. St. Cloud State topped Miami, 4-2, to win its fifth straight Friday night game. SCSU freshman forward Ryan Poehling notched his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist. SCSU freshman goalie Jeff Smith made 30 saves to earn the win. He has now allowed two goals or less in each his last five starts, after giving up three or more goals in eight of his first 13 starts this season.

2 Friday Round-up/Inter-Conference Records Denver, SCSU Pick Up Home Wins Friday; WMU Earns Wild Road Win at Omaha DU inches closer to first place with victory over CC; Molino s hat trick powers Broncos to 7-6 win With two of the top three teams in the NCHC standings idle this weekend, several National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams were looking to make up ground on Friday night and teams did exactly that, inching their way up the standings. No. 2/2 Denver moved within two points of first-place Minnesota Duluth, which is off this weekend, with a 2-1 victory at home over Colorado College, while No. 8/8 Western Michigan took over sole possession of third place with a wild, 7-6 win at Omaha. St. Cloud State also moved up, jumping over the Mavericks into fifth place and is now only a point back of fourth after a 4-2 home win over Miami. In the second-highest scoring game in NCHC history, No. 8/8 Western Michigan prevailed over Omaha, 7-6, in a wild back-andforth affair Friday night at Baxter Arena. The teams combined for eight goals in the first period, including five special teams goals. The Broncos (16-7-4, /1 NCHC) held multiple leads in the opening period, including 2-0 less than five minutes into the game, as well as 4-1 and 5-2 advantages, but Omaha ( , NCHC) began a string of four straight goals when junior defenseman Luc Snuggerud scored on the power play to make it 5-3 after 20 minutes. The Mavericks then added the only goal of the second stanza, before striking twice in the first half of the third period to grab their first lead of the game at 6-5 on a power play goal from sophomore forward Fredrik Olofsson. WMU would not be outdone however, as sophomore forward Griffen Molino scored twice in the final six minutes of the game to lift the Broncos to the win, notching the game-winner with 2:11 remaining to complete his second career hat trick. Molino tied a career high with four points, adding an assist, while two of his goals came short-handed as WMU finished with three shorties in the game. Senior forward Sheldon Dries also notched four points on two goals and two assists to match his Bronco career high, tallying the other short-handed marker. The Mavericks scored three power play goals, including one from junior forward David Pope, who finished with two goals in the loss, while Snuggerud totaled three points, adding two assists. Despite the loss, Omaha outshot WMU, 39-29, but freshman Ben Blacker made 33 saves to earn the victory. The two teams complete their only regular-season series of the season Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. CT at Baxter Arena. Winning its 11th straight game over its in-state rival, No. 2/2 Denver held off Colorado College for a 2-1 win Friday at Magness Arena to close within two points of first place in the NCHC. The Pioneers (19-6-4, /2 NCHC) outshot the Tigers (7-18-2, NCHC) handily, 39-15, but CC freshman goalie Alex Leclerc compiled 37 saves to keep the Tigers in the game. DU grabbed a 1-0 lead only 1:17 into the contest on a blast from junior defenseman Adam Plant, while sophomore forward Jarid Lukosevicius doubled Denver s The NCHC vs.... (non-conference breakdown) for lead with a power play goal in the second stanza. The Tigers cut the deficit in half on a goal from senior forward Matt Hansen late in the middle period, but were unable to find the equalizer despite an extra attacker in the final minutes. Senior defenseman Will Butcher assisted on both Pioneer tallies while Lukosevicius picked up his NCAA-leading sixth game-winning goal of the season. The long-time rivals complete their regular-season series Saturday with the back end of the home-and-home series at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m. MT. Using a big third period, St. Cloud State overcame a second-period deficit to top Miami, 4-2, Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and move into fifth place in the NCHC. The RedHawks (9-12-6, /1 NCHC) broke a scoreless deadlock 4:04 into the second period when freshman forward Gordie Green scored on the power play, but the Huskies ( , NCHC) pulled even late in the middle period with a power play goal of their own from freshman forward Ryan Poehling, who finished with a two-point night. SCSU tacked on two goals in a span of 1:11 early in the third period to take the lead for good with sophomore forward Robby Jackson notching the game-winner, as he also handed out an assist for a two-point game. Miami closed within one with an extra attacker goal on the power play in the final 32 seconds, but the Huskies added an empty-netter to seal the victory. The RedHawks outshot SCSU, 32-30, in the loss, but freshman Jeff Smith totaled 30 saves to get the win in net. The two teams wrap up their series Saturday in St. Cloud at 7:07 p.m. CT.
