Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings). DU becomes the third different NCHC team to hoist the Penrose Cup, joining St. Cloud State ( ) and North Dakota ( , 15-16). Denver also becomes the second NCHC team to win both the Frozen Faceoff (2014) and Penrose Cup, along with SCSU. This is Denver s first regular-season championship since winning the WCHA in The Pioneers also extended their win streak to 10 games, which ties Harvard for the longest active win streak in the country. DU s 25 wins are the most in the NCAA. With Denver having locked up the No. 1 seed in the NCHC Tournament, DU will face rival Colorado College in next weekend s best-of-three quarterfinal series. With a win Saturday, the Pioneers would tie the NCHC record for conference points with 59, matching UND s mark from last season. The three losses would also be the fewest in NCHC play in the conference s four-year history (UND had four in ). Denver freshman forward Henrik Borgström scored two goals in the win as he enters the final night of the regular season leading NCHC rookies with both 10 goals and 17 points in conference play. Minnesota Duluth forward Joey Anderson has 16 conference points. Overall, Borgström leads all NCHC freshmen with 34 points this season, while his 19 goals this season tie for first nationally among rookies. Borgström is now riding a four-game point streak with seven points in that span (4g, 3a). No. 8/8 Western Michigan, which is locked into the three seed, snapped No. 3/2 Minnesota Duluth s 11-game unbeaten streak with a 7-4 victory. WMU now has 20 wins on the season, its first 20-win season since head coach Andy Murray s first year behind the bench when the Broncos won 21 games in WMU improved to at home this season with the.794 win percentage second nationally. WMU senior forward Sheldon Dries tallied his first career hat trick in the win and tied a career high with four points, his second four-point game this season (Feb. 10 at Omaha). Since that game at UNO, he is riding a seven-game point streak with 14 points in that span (7g, 7a). No. 15/15 North Dakota remained in control of the final home ice playoff spot with a 3-2 comeback win at Miami. Junior forward Trevor Olson scored the game-winning goal short-handed to break a 2-2 tie, which was his first career short-handed goal. The Fighting Hawks need two points Saturday to lock up the final home ice spot, which would extend UND s streak of hosting the first round of its conference tournament to 15 years -- the longest active streak in the NCAA. No. 19 St. Cloud State moved into fifth place with a 5-2 win over Colorado College. The Huskies can finish anywhere from the No. 4 seed to the No. 6 seed depending on Saturday s results. Omaha, the third team in the mix, cannot finish higher than the No. 5 seed. The NCHC scoring race comes down to the final night with UMD senior forward Alex Iafallo and Omaha senior forward Austin Ortega tied with 28 conference points each -- both with 10 goals and 18 assists.

3 Friday Round-up/Inter-Conference Records Denver Captures First Penrose Cup with Win at Omaha WMU downs UMD, UND remains in fourth with win at Miami, SCSU tops CC to move up to fifth Entering the penultimate night of the regular season, there was still much to be decided, but after Friday night s results, the NCHC Tournament is clearly taking shape. The biggest prize still out there was captured at Baxter Arena where No. 1/1 Denver won its first Penrose Cup as NCHC regular-season champions with a 4-2 win over Omaha, locking up the top seed in the upcoming NCHC Tournament. In the playoffs, the Pioneers, now on a 10-game winning streak, will face rival Colorado College, which fell at No. 19 St. Cloud State Friday, 5-2. The Huskies moved ahead of Omaha and into fifth place heading into the final night of the regular season. No. 15/15 North Dakota remained in fourth place and in control of the final home ice spot with a 3-2 comeback win at Miami. No. 8/8 Western Michigan, which was already locked into the No. 3 seed, continued to roll at home with a 7-4 win over No. 3/2 Minnesota Duluth, which finishes second in the NCHC and will host Miami next weekend. The loss snapped UMD s 11-game unbeaten streak. Behind a big third period, No. 1/1 Denver downed Omaha, 4-2, Friday at Baxter Arena to win its first Penrose Cup as NCHC regular-season champions. DU sophomore forward Troy Terry opened his three-point night with an early goal, but the Mavericks ( , NCHC) answered with the next two goals to take the lead. Denver (25-6-4, /2 NCHC) pulled even late in the second stanza before getting two goals from freshman forward Henrik Borgström in the final frame to earn the win with the game-winner coming on the power play. The Pioneers outshot Omaha, 32-25, in the win. Denver looks to keep its 10-game win streak going when it completes its series with UNO Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT. Taking advantage of special teams, No. 15/15 North Dakota overcame a pair of deficits for a 3-2 win over Miami Friday at Steve Cady Arena. The RedHawks (9-17-7, /1 NCHC) led 1-0 in the first period and 2-1 in the second stanza with freshman forward Gordie Green assisting on one and scoring the other, but UND ( , /0 NCHC) used a power play goal and a goal from freshman forward Tyson Jost to pull even each time. The Fighting Hawks then got the game-winner from junior forward Trevor Olson, who notched his first career short-handed goal late in the second period. UND outshot Miami, 41-16, with Miami freshman Ryan Larkin making 38 saves in defeat. The teams wrap up their series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. ET with North Dakota needing two points to secure home ice. No. 8/8 Western Michigan jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back in a 7-4 victory over No. 3/2 Minnesota Duluth Friday at Lawson Ice Arena. Senior forward Sheldon Dries, who recorded his first career hat trick and tied a career high with four points in the win, opened the scoring, while WMU ( , /1 NCHC) added a power play goal in the first and two more tallies in the second before UMD (20-5-7, /2 NCHC) got on the board. The Broncos made it 6-2 before the Bulldogs started a late rally to close within 6-4, but a second WMU empty-netter sealed the win. Sophomore forward Griffen Molino dished out a career-high four assists in the victory for the Broncos. Despite the loss, UMD outshot WMU, 38-23, but freshman Ben Blacker totaled 34 saves to get the win in net. The second- and third-place teams in the NCHC wrap up their series Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. In a game of scoring spurts, No. 19 St. Cloud State blew open a tight game late in the third period to pick up a 5-2 win over Colorado College at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. After the Huskies ( , NCHC) took an early lead, the Tigers (7-22-4, /0 NCHC) answered with two goals in a little over three minutes. Freshman brothers Nick and Jack Poehling struck two minutes apart late in the first frame to put SCSU back in front, 3-2. The Huskies then tacked on two more goals in the final four minutes of the game to earn the threegoal victory. Jack Poehling, junior forward Judd Peterson, senior forward Daniel Tedesco and sophomore forward Jacob Benson all notched a goal and an assist for SCSU, who outshot CC, 34-32, in the win. The teams conclude their series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT with SCSU looking to clinch home ice with the help of a North Dakota loss.
