Lucia s staff includes associate head coach Mike Guentzel (Minnesota 87), assistant coach Grant Potulny (Minnesota 04) and goaltending coach Justin Johnson (Minnesota 05). Series History North Dakota and Minnesota have met 284 times during UND s Division I era, which began with the season, and the Golden Gophers own a edge in the series. The two teams most recently met in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal in Philadelphia, where Minnesota edged UND 2-1 on Justin Holl s short-handed goal with sixth-tenths of a second remaining in the third period. Defenseman Gage Ausmus (Sr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) and goaltender Matt Hrynkiw (Sr., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) are the only two active UND players who were on the roster for that game, although neither played. Family Ties UND freshman forward Zach Yon s (Roseau, Minn.) father, Bill, lettered in hockey at Minnesota from Sophomore forward Shane Gersich (Chaska, Minn.) is the nephew of former Minnesota standouts and future NHLers Aaron, Neal and Paul Broten. Minnesota Duluth senior forward Alex Iafallo was the difference in Friday s 5-2 decision, notching his first collegiate hat trick and adding assist. It was the first hat trick against UND in more than two years, dating back to Austin Czarnik s 3-goal outing at Miami during the regular-season finale. Sophomores Rhett Gardner (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) and Shane Gersich (Chaska, Minn.) scored the lone UND goals. On Saturday, the Bulldogs received two shorthanded goals, one power-play tally and a 30- save shutout from freshman Hunter Miska in sweeping UND for the first time since Jan It was also the first time UND had been shut out since March 21, 2014, when Miami s Ryan McKay blanked UND at the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. Sweep Stakes Last weekend s pair of losses at Minnesota Duluth marked just the second time in five years that UND has been swept on the road. Last February, Denver handed UND a sweep at Magness Arena, which marked the first time UND had been swept away from home since Nov. 4-5, 2011 at Minnesota. Rank and File UND is in the midst of a five-week stretch of the schedule in which every opponent is currently ranked in the USCHO top-20 poll. UND began the stretch with a non-conference sweep of No. 18 Bemidji State on Oct , followed by last weekend s losses at then-no. 2 Minnesota Duluth. This week, UND travels to No. 13 Minnesota, then continues with home series vs. No. 2 Denver (Nov ) and a road date at No. 8 St. Cloud State (Nov ). UND was (.725) last season against ranked opponents. Goalies GP-GS W-L-T GAA SV% Anderson, Ryan Hrynkiw, Matt Johnson, Cam Tomek, Matej In Friday s victory, the Gophers erased a 3-0 deficit and won 4-3 on Leon Bristedt s overtime goal, his second tally of the game. Minnesota used more dramatics in Saturday s 2-2 tie with the Golden Knights, as Jack Sadek and Mike Szmatula each scored in the final minute with the Minnesota net empty to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 2-2 overtime tie. Sophomore netminder Eric Schierhorn has started all six games in goal and is with Poll Position For the first time this season, UND was knocked from the top spot in the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, which were released on Monday. The Fighting Hawks were ranked third in both polls, while Minnesota slipped from 12th to 13th. Refer to Page 3 for complete poll information. Last Week UND fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a pair of losses at second-ranked Minnesota Duluth, falling 5-2 on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday. Non-Conference Numbers With five non-conference wins to open the season, UND has now lost just once in its last 27 non-conference games (23-1-3). That lone loss was a 3-1 setback vs. Wisconsin on Nov. 6, 2015 in Grand Forks. The Fighting Hawks went (.833) during its non-conference schedule. High Five Prior to last weekend s sweep at the hands of UMD, North Dakota had enjoyed its first start since , a squad that was led by freshman sensation and current Minnesota

3 PAGE 3 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA GAME NOTES OCTOBER 25, 2016 Wild Zach Parise. Power Outage UND s power-play struggled to a 1-13 clip last weekend at Minnesota Duluth and allowed a pair of short-handed goals. The Fighting Hawks are 3-27 (11.1 percent) with the man advantage over the last five games and 5-37 (13.5 precent) on the season. Kill or Be Killed UND s penalty kill has also taken a downturn in recent weeks. After going (95.5 percent) over the first four games, UND is now just 9-14 (64.3 percent) in its last three. Brock-tober Right winger Brock Boeser (Burnsville, Minn.), led the NCHC in points (12) and points per game (1.71) and tied for the league lead in goals (6) during the month of October. Boeser was named the game s No. 1 star in four of UND s first seven games. Last weekend at UMD was the first time Boeser went an entire weekend without a point since last November, but his career points-per-game average is still a sparkling 1.47, a number topped at UND in the last quarter-century by only current Minnesota Wild star Zach Parise: POINT-PER-GAME PLAYERS SINCE 1990 Rk. The only game in which UND scored first was the season-opening win over Canisius (Oct. 7). Last season, UND went when scoring first and when the opponent scored first. Prior to last Saturday s shutout loss at Minnesota Duluth, sophomore Shane Gerisch (Chaska, Minn.) had reached the scoresheet in each of the team s first six games for the longest point streak of his collegiate career. With four goals and six assists, Gersich s 10 points in seven games are already just one shy of matching the 11 he had in 37 games as a freshman. He enters the week tied for second in the NCHC scoring race, ranks second in points per game (1.43) behind only teammate Brock Boeser (1.71), and is tied for fifth in plus/minus (+5). 16 PAGE 16 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA GAME NOTES NOVEMBER 1, 2016 BRAD BERRY Head Coach Years at UND: 11th Years as Head Coach: 2nd Hometown: Bashaw, Alberta Alma Mater: North Dakota ( 02) Few individuals have ever had more impact in their first year at the helm of a program than North Dakota men s hockey coach Brad Berry, who became the first person in the history of NCAA Division I men s hockey to lead his team to a national title in his first year as head coach. The former National Hockey League defenseman and coach masterfully guided his alma mater to the program s eighth national championship in his debut season, bringing to a halt a 16-year drought for the storied program. Berry and the Fighting Hawks went , establishing a team record for most wins by a rookie head coach, and their.818 winning percentage was the second best in program history. Berry also led North Dakota to its second straight Penrose Cup as National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular-season champion, resulting in NCHC Herb Brooks Coach of the Year honors. He also garnered national coach of the year honors from U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) and was one of eight finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given to the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Coach of the Year. Four of Berry s players forwards Brock Boeser and Drake Caggiula, defenseman Troy Stecher, and goaltender Cam Johnson earned All-America honors, joining UND s team as the only entries in school history to boast four All-Americans. Following the season, eight players signed professional contracts: Caggiula (Edmonton Oilers), Stecher (Vancouver Canucks), Paul LaDue (Los Angeles Kings), Keaton Thompson (Anaheim Ducks), Nick Schmaltz (Chicago Blackhawks), Luke Johnson (Chicago Blackhawks), Bryn Chyzyk (AHL s Rockford IceHogs) and Coltyn Sanderson (ECHL s Orlando Solar Bears).
