UND S LAST ACTION: UND advanced to the Red Baron WCHA Final Five with a firstround sweep of Bemidji State last weekend in Grand Forks, winning 4-1 on Friday and 4-3 in Saturday. The sweep was keyed by the line of Carter Rowney (1g, 4a), Mark MacMillan (1g, 3a) and Michael Parks (1g, 3a), which combined for 13 points in the series. Rowney had a career-high three assists on Friday, and MacMillan followed with a career-high three assists on Saturday. The Sioux are tied for 11th in the PairWise Rankings and are ninth in the KRACH Rankings. FINAL FIVE FACTS: Notable items regarding UND s appearance at the 2012 Red Baron WCHA Final Five: The Sioux are making their 10th straight appearance at the Final Five, the longest active streak in the league. Only Minnesota, which played in 11 straight from from 1999 to 2009, has had a longer streak since the WCHA adopted the championship tournament format in UND has won each of the last two Broadmoor Trophies and is seeking to become the first team in league history to win three straight Final Five championships. The Sioux have won 10 WCHA playoff championships, three of which have come under eighth-year head coach Dave Hakstol. UND has won 10 straight WCHA playoff games, including five straight Final Five victories. The Sioux are 27-8 (.771) in the WCHA playoffs under Hakstol, including a 12-5 (.706) record at the Final Five. UND is against this year s WCHA Final Five field. PLAYOFF PROWESS: During head coach Dave Hakstol s eight seasons, UND has gone in the playoffs (WCHA and NCAA combined), 13 more wins than the next-closest WCHA school (see page 14 of this release for postseason records of every WCHA school during Hakstol s tenure). Under Hakstol, the Sioux are 16-3 in the WCHA First Round and have yet to lose a WCHA First Round series. Including WCHA Final Five games, UND is 27-8 in the WCHA Playoffs under Hakstol. WE RE GOING STREAKING!: Since suffering a 1-0 loss at Bemidji State on Nov. 20, UND has gone (.760), a stretch that began with a Thanksgiving weekend sweep over then-no. 4 Colorado College. IT S HOW YOU FINISH: With just four losses in 19 games since the Christmas break, UND has continued its trend of playing its best hockey after Christmas under eighth-year head coach Dave Hakstol: Year Before After (.636) (.587) (.625) (.654) (.417) (.760) (.567) (.768) (.528) (.660) (.583) (.680) (.700) (.813) (.528) (.737) Totals (.577) (.706) IN LIKE A LION: UND has been particularly effective once the calendar turns to March. Over the previous two seasons, the Sioux have gone (.905) in March, including 12 straight wins, and are (.791) through Hakstol s eight seasons: Year March Of Note (.833) NCAA runner-up (.889) NCAA semifinals (.813) NCAA semifinals (.667) NCAA semifinals (.500) WCHA champions (.778) WCHA playoff champs (1.000) NCAA semifinals (1.000) --- Totals (.785) RPM INCREASE: UND s RPM line of Carter Rowney (Jr., Sexsmith, Alberta), Michael Parks (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Mark MacMillan (Fr., Penticton, British Columbia) combined for 13 points in last weekend s sweep of BSU, making them the league s highest-scoring trio during the opening round.

3 MARCH 12, 2012 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES PAGE 3 Rowney had a goal and four assists, while Parks and MacMillan each had a goal and three assists. When MacMillan scored in Friday s 4-1 win, it ended a personal 13-game drought without a goal. The following night, he collected three assists for his first career 3-point night. He now has five points during a 3-game point streak. DUDE, WE VE GOT A DELL: In eight career March starts, junior goalie Aaron Dell (Airdrie, Alberta) is 7-1 with a 1.07 goals against average and a.954 save percentage. He has never lost a WCHA playoff game, going 5-0 with a 1.29 GAA and a.945 save percentage. That includes a 3-0 record in the WCHA first round with a 0.67 GAA and a.969 save percentage. EIDS OF MARCH: Not to be outdone, senior Brad Eidsness (Chestermere, Alberta) has gone with a 1.76 goals against average and a.929 save percentage during the month of March over the past three years. Last Saturday s start was Eidsness 104th career appearance, tying him for fourth all-time at UND: Rk. Player GP 1. Toby Kvalevog ( ) Karl Goehring ( ) Jean-Philippe Lamoureux ( ) Brad Eidsness (2008-present) Peter Waselovich ( ) It was also his 58th career victory, leaving him two wins shy of becoming only the third goalie in UND history to win 60 career games: Rk. NODAK NATION: North Dakota is the No. 1 draw in men s college hockey this season, averaging 9,484 fans per game, home and away combined. Wisconsin ranks a close second at 9,174. Maine Boston College Bemidji State Northeastern North Dakota UND s junior class includes: Danny Kristo ( ), Corban Knight ( ), Carter Rowney ( ), Joe Gleason ( ) and Andrew MacWilliam (2-4-6). FROM SLUMP TO STREAK: Freshman Connor Gaarder (Edina, Minn.) entered the playoffs having gone 15 games without a goal, having last scored on New Year s Eve against Harvard. Gaarder broke out of his slump by scoring the game s first goal in each of UND s two wins last weekend against Bemidji State. Gaarder s 2-goal series doubled his season output coming into the playoffs. LINEUP LIMITATIONS: With injured forwards Rocco Grimaldi (Fr., Rossmoor, Calif.), Brendan O Donnell (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Derek Rodwell (So., Taber, Alberta) all out for the season, UND will not have the luxury of playing with a healthy scratch (among skaters) for the remainder of the season. Eight players have combined to miss 90 games due to injury so far this season: Rocco Grimaldi, 33 Brendan O Donnell, 20 Derek Rodwell, 18 Taylor Dickin, 6 Derek Forbort, 5 Corban Knight, 3 Mario Lamoureux, 3 Aaron Dell, 2 UND has played in nine games this season in which it was forced to suit up fewer than 18 skaters. Both O Donnell and Grimaldi are out for the season. BROCK N ROLL: Sophomore forward Brock Nelson (Warroad, Minn.) was the WCHA s only player to score 20 goals during league play this season, and was just the third in the last four years. Nelson scored an empty netter in the regular season finale to hit the 20-goal mark and become the second straight Sioux (Matt Frattin) to lead the league in goals. He currently ranks second in the WCHA s overall goal-scoring race with 23. Nelson is UND s youngest 20-goal scorer since Jonathan Toews scored 22 as a freshman in ROARING TWENTIES: With 22 victories this season, UND has reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth time in as many seasons under head coach Dave Hakstol. Only Gino Gasaprini, who won 20 games for 13 straight years from 1978 to 1991, had a longer streak of 20-plus wins at UND. CARTER WOW-NEY: Junior forward Carter Rowney (Sexsmith, Alberta) ranks tied for second on the team with a career-high 17 goals. Rowney had eight goals in the month of February alone, matching the eight he scored from October through January. He entered the season with four goals in 67 career games in his first two seasons. Rowney is also tied for the team lead (w/ Brock Nelson) with nine power-play goals after entering his junior season without ever having scored a power-play tally at UND. In UND s first-round sweep over BSU, Rowney led the Sioux with five points, including a WCHA-leading four assists. KNIGHTLINE S WINNING RATINGS: UND s top line of Corban Knight (Jr., High River, Alberta), Danny Kristo (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Brock Nelson (So., Warroad, Minn.) has combined for 79 points (36 goals, 43 assists) in the 18 wins in which it has played together, an average of 4.4 points per game. The line has just 14 points (8g, 6a) in eight losses, which equates to only 1.75 points per game. Kristo ( ), Nelson ( ) and Knight ( ) are UND s top three scorers and have scored 45.7 percent of the team s goals (53-116) this season. Last Saturday against BSU marked just the second time this season the Sioux won a game without any of the three reaching the scoresheet (2-5-1). THERE WILL BE BLOOD: Senior defenseman Ben Blood (Plymouth, Minn.) has appeared in 137 consecutive games, the longest active streak on the team. The school record for consecutive games played is also an NCAA record -- and is shared by Ryan Duncan ( ) and Chris Porter ( ). Porter currently plays with the NHL s St. Louis Blues and Duncan with the AHL s Portland Pirates (Phoenix Coyotes). Blood has a career-high 18 points this season and is a +11 in his last 11 games. Gleason has played 24 games at forward and 12 on the blueline. NICK OF TIME: Freshman Nick Mattson (Chanhassen, Minn.) is tied for the team scoring lead among defensemen, having collected 18 points (6g, 12a) in 37 games. That puts him on the verge of becoming UND s first rookie rearguard to reach the 20-point plateau since current NHLer Brian Lee notched 27 points in Mattson s six goals have been topped by only eight other first-year defensemen in school history: Rk. Eidsness was named the league s Most Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year, making him the second straight Sioux to win the award (Chay Genoway). Eidsness completed his bachelor s degree in business administration following his junior season and will receive his master s degree in business administration in May. Last year, Eidsness received the 2011 NCAA Elite 88 Award for men s hockey at the NCAA Frozen Four for owning the highest grade point average among all participants at the championship. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a cumulative grade point average as an undergraduate and boasts a cumulative GPA in graduate school. He is a three-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete. Meanwhile, Blood and Nelson both earned their first all-conference selections when they were named to the All-WCHA Third Team. Blood has recorded a career-high 18 points this season while playing nearly 30 minutes per night. Two of his three goals have been game-winners, leaving him one shy of the school single-season record for defensemen. Nelson was the WCHA s only player to score 20 goals during league play this season, and was just the third in the last four years. He ranks second in the WCHA s overall goalscoring race with 23 and is tied for the team lead with a career-high 40 points. It was also announced that UND had 11 players earn All-WCHA Academic Team honors, including three-time selections Eidsness, Blood, Mario Lamoureux (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) and Tate Maris (Jr., Denver, Colo.). UND s other All-WCHA honorees included two-time selections Andrew MacWilliam (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) and Carter Rowney (Jr., Sexsmith, Alberta), as well as first-time recipients Nelson, Taylor Dickin (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba), Derek Forbort (So., Duluth, Minn.), Brock Nelson (So., Warroad, Minn.), Derek Rodwell (So., Taber, Alberta) and Dillon Simpson (So., Edmonton, Alberta). HEAD OF THE CLASS: Senior Brad Eidsness (Chestermere, Alberta) and sophomores Taylor Dickin (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Dillon Simpson (Edmonton, Alberta) were named WCHA Scholar-Athletes in February. It was the third straight year in which Eidsness was honored, while both Dickin and Simpson were first-time honorees. INCH AWARDS: Inside College Hockey named Dave Hakstol as its WCHA Coach of the Year last week, while tabbing sophomore forward Brock Nelson (Warroad, Minn.) as its WCHA Breakthrough Player of the Year. SUPER DAVE: UND s 3-2 win at SCSU on Jan. 21 was the 200th victory for Dave Hakstol, enabling him to join John Gino Gasparini (392 wins, ) and Dean Blais (262 wins, ) as the only UND coaches to reach that milestone. Hakstol, Gasparini and Blais each won their 200th game in their eighth season. Hakstol played under Gasparini at UND, and was brought to the UND coaching staff as an assistant coach by Blais. With 32 wins last season, UND has reached the 20-win plateau in each of Hakstol s first seven seasons behind the bench. It was also the 3rdhighest win total in program history. Dubbed the U.S. College Hockey Classic, the game was UND s first on Canadian soil in 59 years. The last time UND played a men s hockey game in Canada was Dec , 1953, when UND lost a pair of games to host Fort Frances (Ontario). The last time UND played outside of the United States was Dec , 1982, when the team competed in the Spengler Cup in Switzerland.

6 PAGE 6 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES MARCH 12, 2012 HELLO, MY NAME IS: UND head coach Dave Hakstol announced on Jan. 10 that forward Mitch MacMillan (So., Penticton, British Columbia) transferred to UND and will join the team immediately. MacMillan is eligible to practice with the team, but will not be eligible to compete until January MacMillan will have two years of NCAA eligibility remaining when he resumes competition next January. MacMillan transferred to UND from St. Cloud State, where he had five assists in 14 games this season. In 28 games last season as a freshman, MacMillan had four goals and two assists. MacMillan s younger brother, Mark, is currently a freshman forward at UND. The last time the two were teammates was in with Alberni Valley of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), when they were the team s top two scorers and combined for 173 points (87 goals, 86 assists) in 59 games. ASSISTANCE PLAN: Junior goalie Aaron Dell (Airdrie, Alberta) has four career assists, a total topped by only one goalie in the history of the program: current volunteer assistant coach Karl Goehring. Goehring amassed a school-record seven assists from 1997 to MARIO S MILESTONE: When senior captain Mario Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) scored the game-winning goal on Nov. 19 at Bemidji State, he entered the UND history books by scoring the 10,000th goal in program history. Perhaps it was fitting that Lamoureux would be the one to score the milestone goal, considering he is from Grand Forks, and his extensive family ties to UND hockey. Lamoureux s sisters, Jocelyne and Monique, are junior forwards on UND s women s hockey team. His father, Pierre, played goalie for UND from and was a member of two NCAA championship teams. His brother, Jean-Philippe, was a goaltender at UND from and was an All-American as a senior. Another brother, Pierre-Paul, is currently in his third season on UND s coaching staff as assistant video coordinator. Finally, his uncle, Roger Lamoureux, was a four-year letterwinner at forward for UND from 1973 to SUPER MARIO: In addition to the 10,000- goals milestone, Lamoureux s tally on Nov. 19 was significant for another reason. With the goal, UND improved to alltime when Lamoureux scores. THE EAGLE SOARS INTO THE HALL: UND legend Ed Belfour made history on Nov. 14 when he became the first UND product to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Belfour parlayed a historic freshman season into a distinguished professional career that saw him become the third-winningest goalie in NHL history. Only Martin Brodeur (636 wins) and Patrick Roy (551) have won more games than Belfour, who won 484 from 1988 to A native of Carman, Manitoba, Belfour won a UND-record 29 games (since broken) in and was named an NCAA All-American after leading UND to the 1987 national championship. He was the backbone of the famed Hrkac Circus team that won a then- NCAA-record 40 games. Belfour twice won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL s best goalie and helped lead the Dallas Stars to a Stanley Cup championship in A six-time all-star game participant, Belfour ranks third in NHL history in wins (484), fourth in games played (963) and saves (24,750), and ninth in shutouts (76). 14 PAGE 14 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES MARCH 12, 2012 Now in his eighth season as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, Dave Hakstol has established himself as one of the most accomplished and well-respected bench bosses in NCAA hockey. Through his first seven seasons, Hakstol has compiled a (.653) overall winning percentage and a (.625) WCHA record. Already a six-time finalist for the prestigious Spencer Penrose Award as the national coach of the year, Hakstol guided the Fighting Sioux to the NCAA Frozen Four in , giving UND an incredible five Frozen Four berths in Hakstol s first seven years as head coach. He also led UND to a second MacNaughton Cup in three years as WCHA champions, giving the Sioux an NCAA men s hockey-leading 15 conference titles. UND also won its second straight Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA playoff champions. In the process, Hakstol and the Sioux turned in the third-winningest season (32 wins) in the program s illustrious history. Three of Hakstol s players garnered All-America honors in : forward Matt Frattin (first team), defenseman Chay Genoway (first team) and goalie Aaron Dell (second team). Frattin, who led the nation with 36 goals, was also a Hobey Baker Award Hobey Hat Trick finalist and the WCHA Player of the Year. Genoway was named the WCHA s Most Outstanding Student-Athlete, while Dell won a schoolrecord 30 games, toppling a 24-year-old record previously held by Hockey Hall of Famer Ed Belfour. In the classroom, UND placed a program-record 16 student-athletes on the WCHA All-Academic team and boasted five WCHA Scholar-Athlete honorees. In , Hakstol and the Sioux added another piece of hardware to UND s championship lore with a Broadmoor Trophy as the WCHA Final Five champions, the second Broadmoor Trophy of Hakstol s distinguished tenure. Hakstol led the Sioux to a overall record and a WCHA mark, landing an eighth straight NCAA postseason appearance, the third-longest streak in the nation. The Fighting Sioux went overall and in conference play in en route to their WCHA-leading 14th league championship. Hakstol was also recognized as WCHA Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Hakstol joined rare company when he took the Sioux to the Frozen Four in his first four seasons as a collegiate head coach, joining Jack Parker and Doug Woog as the only three coaches to accomplish that feat. In Hakstol s first season ( ) as head coach, he led a team with nine seniors to the Frozen Four. In his second season ( ), he led a team with 13 freshmen and just two seniors to the Frozen Four. In his third season, Hakstol took UND to the Frozen Four yet again, and sophomore forward Ryan Duncan won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the best player in college hockey. In , his fourth season, Hakstol led UND to a overall record and WCHA mark (second place). A key in Hakstol s success has been surrounding himself with an outstanding coaching staff. His first two seasons, he was joined by associate head coach Brad Berry and assistant coach Cary Eades. Eades has won championships on every level at which he has played or coached. Berry s outstanding work at UND resulted in him accepting an assistant coach position in the NHL s Vancouver Canucks organization in the summer of To fill the vacancy created by Berry s departure, Eades was promoted to associate head coach and Hakstol hired former Sioux and NHL player Dane Jackson as an assistant coach. Jackson, who had an 11-year career as a professional hockey player, has became an integral part of the coaching staff by working individually with each Fighting Sioux player on developing their skills. The trademark of the Fighting Sioux during Hakstol s first seven seasons has been UND s ability to play its best hockey at the most crucial time of the year in the playoffs. THE DAVE HAKSTOL FILE Birthdate July 30, 1968 Hometown Warburg, Alberta Education Bachelor s Degree: Financial Management (UND 96) Family Wife, Erinn; daughter, Avery; son, Brenden Coaching 2004-present - Head Coach University of North Dakota Associate Head Coach University of North Dakota General Manager/Head Coach Sioux City (USHL) Head Coach USA/USHL Team, IIHF Four Nations Cup Head Coach Central District Team USA, National Select 16 Festival Coaching Awards WCHA Coach of the Year 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 Spencer Penrose Award finalist USHL Coach of the Year Playing Career Minnesota Moose (IHL) Indianapolis Ice (IHL) University of North Dakota During his first seven years, Hakstol has led the Sioux to an overall postseason record of (.720) that includes a 25-8 WCHA playoff record and 11-7 NCAA playoff mark. UND s 36 NCAA and WCHA playoff wins the last six seasons are more than any other WCHA team during that time. UND has developed a reputation for doing an outstanding job in preparing players for professional hockey careers and careers beyond hockey. Last season, an astonishing 45 former Sioux played professionally, including 16 who played in the National Hockey League. Among those 16 were Frattin, who made his NHL debut with Toronto on Hockey Night in Canada a mere two days after UND s season came to an end. In , 17 former Fighting Sioux played in the National Hockey League, the program s most since the season. Thirteen of those players were coached by Hakstol during his nine seasons on the UND staff. In the last five seasons alone, nine of Hakstol s former UND players have debuted the NHL the year after completing their collegiate careers, including Frattin ( ), Chris VandeVelde ( ), T.J. Oshie ( ), Chris Porter ( ), Taylor Chorney ( ), Brian Lee ( ), Matt Smaby ( ), Drew Stafford ( ) and Travis Zajac. In , All-American Jonathan Toews made the jump directly to the NHL s Chicago Blackhawks after playing two years at UND. He was a finalist for the NHL s Rookie of the Year Award and in the summer of 2008 was named the captain of the Blackhawks, becoming the third-youngest captain in NHL history. Toews was 20 years and 79 days old when he assumed the role as Chicago s captain. In 2010, Toews led the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years, capturing Conn Smythe Trophy honors as playoff MVP in the process. Earlier that same year, Toews led Canada to a gold medal at the Olympics in Vancouver and was named the tournament s top forward. In the last seven seasons, 33 UND players have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft, including six in the 2007, 2008 and 2010 NHL Drafts. UND men s hockey players are also outstanding students. Last season, a schoolrecord 16 student-athletes were named to the WCHA All-Academic team. In each

In , 10 UND men s hockey players earned WCHA All-Academic honors, most in the league. In , 11 Fighting Sioux were named to the WCHA All-Academic team, tying for the WCHA league high. Hakstol, 35 years old when he was named UND s head men s hockey coach on July 9, 2004, is just the 15th head men s hockey coach in school history and only the fourth Fighting Sioux head coach in the past 43 years. Hakstol, a Sioux player from , is also just the fifth former UND player to also become head coach at North Dakota. Taking over a tradition-rich program that is synonymous with the word excellence was no small task, but Hakstol s background prepared him for the challenge. Prior to taking over as UND s head coach, the former Sioux captain was a member of Dean Blais s coaching staff for four seasons and in that stint helped coach the Sioux to a (.662) overall record and (.634) WCHA record. During Hakstol s four years under Blais, UND won two WCHA titles, made three NCAA appearances and finished as the 2001 national runnerup. Named a UND assistant coach on July 1, 2000, Hakstol was elevated to associate head coach in December 2000, and he served as the team s recruiting coordinator in his four seasons working under Blais. In that capacity, Hakstol played a vital role in helping attract top-caliber student-athletes to UND. Eleven UND players or recruits were drafted by National Hockey League teams while Hakstol and former associate head coach Brad Berry were Sioux assistants. Prior to joining the UND staff on July 1, 2000, Hakstol spent four seasons ( ) as the general manager and head coach of the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League, posting winning seasons in his last three seasons. Overall, Hakstol had a record with the Musketeers. He was named the USHL Coach of the Year in , when he led Sioux City to a record. While coaching at Sioux City, Hakstol also coached the 1998 USA/USHL hockey team at the IIHF Four Nationals Cup in Oslo, Norway, and he was the head coach of the Central District team (USA Hockey) at the National Select 16 Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich., in Before beginning his coaching career, Hakstol played professional hockey with the IHL s Minnesota Moose from , serving as team captain for two years, and with the IHL s Indianapolis Ice from , serving as team captain for one season. In five professional seasons, Hakstol played in 250 games, scoring 12 goals and recording 37 assists. He also accumulated 455 penalty minutes. As a defenseman on the Sioux hockey team from , Hakstol was a three-year letterwinner and served as team captain from 1990 to He played in 107 games for UND, scoring 10 goals and adding 36 assists for 46 points. He had 77 penalties for 191 minutes. Hakstol and his wife, Erinn, have two children: daughter Avery and son Brenden.
