The games are the first two of four meetings this season. UNO returns the favor when it visits CC in mid-february. The series will mark the first time the two schools have squared off in Omaha. Following this weekend s series, UNO will have just two remaining home games before the Christmas Break. The Teams The Mavericks are overall and in the WCHA, putting them in a tie with Wisconsin for third. UNO is all-time against Colorado College. Last season, the Mavericks split a pair of games in Colorado Springs, losing 5-2 in the opener before responding with a 3-0 shutout the following night. The other meeting in the all-time series was a non-conference meeting at the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska in The Tigers are to start the year and in league play. They are coming off a non-conference sweep at RPI last weekend, winning each game, 4-1. CC began the season with a home sweep of Bemidji State. The Tigers have played fewer games overall than any WCHA team. Last Time Out The Mavericks are coming off a split of their first WCHA road series, winning 5-4 at Wisconsin before losing the second game, 6-3. On Friday, the Mavs fell into a 3-0 hole but chipped away with goals from Brent Gwidt in the first and Terry Broadhurst in the second. Matt White tied the game early in the third only to see Wisconsin retake the lead less than two minutes later. Undaunted, Broadhurst scored again 1:44 later to make it 4-4 and then set up Alex Hudson for the game-winner with 20.8 seconds remaining. The Badgers got out to another 3-0 lead on Saturday and although Broadhurst got one back late in the first, UW tacked on one more before intermission and another goal early in the second to lead 5-1 after two. The Mavericks got powerplay goals from Hudson and Bryce Aneloski in the third to close the gap, but the Badgers scored an empty-net goal to ice it. The Coaches Dean Blais is in his third year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to back-to-back 20- win campaigns. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a career record of (.656) and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of (.551) since coming to Omaha. In , he was named the WCHA Coach of the Year, the fourth time he s earned the honor. He will serve as the head coach of the 2012 U.S. World Junior Team in December. Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led the Fighting Sioux to national championships in 1997 and He is assisted by third-year associate head coach Mike Hastings and first-year assistant coach Brian Renfrew who joins the UNO staff after eight seasons at Michigan State. Scott Owens is in his 13th season leading Colorado College. The 1979 graduate of CC is at his alma mater. He was chosen as the pre-season Coach of the Year in a poll of media who cover the WCHA. He is assisted by Joe Bonnett and Eric Rud. Media Both UNO games this weekend can be heard live on 96.1 The Brew. Dave Ahlers will call the play-by-play while Terry Leahy will provide analysis. Coverage begins 30 minutes before game time online at UNO s IHeart Radio channel, Mavericks Radio. Streaming audio, video and live stats are available at OMavs.com. Up Next For the Mavericks The Mavericks will play their next two weekends on the road beginning Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12 when they visit Bemidji State. 3 DEAN BLAIS Head Coach 13th Year/3rd Year at UNO Minnesota (1973) HONORS AND AWARDS Spencer Penrose Award (1997, 2001) NCAA Championship (1997, 2000) NCAA Tournament Appearances (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2011) WCHA Coach of the Year (1997, 1999, 2001, 2011) IIHF World Junior Championship (2010) USHL Coach of the Year (2009) COLLEGE COACHING RECORD Nebraska Omaha Head Coach ( present) North Dakota Head Coach ( ) Assistant Coach ( ) Overall: ( th Year) UNO: ( rd Year) Conference: (.667) WCHA: ( rd Year) CCHA: ( Year) NCAA Postseason: 9-6 ( Years) In just two years, Dean Blais has had an indelible influence on University of Nebraska Omaha hockey, burnishing his already exceptional credentials as one of the nation s finest coaches. Blais has led the Mavericks to two straight 20-win seasons, doing so for just the second time in school history. In the process, he earned his 300th career win. During the season, Blais guided UNO into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association where the Mavs finished third after being chosen to finish eighth and ninth in two pre-season polls. UNO returned to the NCAA playoffs for just the second time in school history last season and achieved a national ranking of fourth for four straight weeks, the highest in school history. Under Blais leadership, the Mavericks were last season and in the WCHA. The third-place finish was the highest ever for the Mavs in conference play. UNO s strong showing earned Blais the nod as the WCHA s Coach of the Year and put him in the running for the Spencer Penrose Trophy as Division I hockey s top coach. It wasn t difficult to see why Blais earned the accolades. The Mavericks swept their first-ever WCHA series, winning twice at Minnesota in October. They followed that with a split of a non-conference series at Michigan, a place they had won just once previously. Before Christmas, the Mavericks had won and tied at alwaystough St. Cloud State and stunned pre-season favorite North Dakota, winning 1-0 at home on a goal by Alex Hudson with.3 seconds remaining in regulation. The second half of the year featured another stunning win over North Dakota, this time by an 8-4 tally at vaunted Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. Typical of Blais teams, the Mavericks surged down the stretch with back-to-back sweeps of St. Cloud and Wisconsin and hard-fought splits with Denver and at eventual national champion Minnesota Duluth. Blais earned win number 300 with a 4-3 win over the Badgers on Feb. 12 to complete the sweep. UNO s return to the NCAA playoffs was short-lived as the Mavericks lost to Michigan 3-2 in overtime in the regional semifinals on March 25, but Blais once again had been successful in further raising the expectations of his players and UNO fans alike. Seven players registered career highs in either goals, assists or points. Blais became only the second coach in UNO hockey history on June 12, 2009, succeeding Mike Kemp. In his first year in Omaha, he guided the Mavericks to a record of overall record and a record in their final season in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The record was good for a sixth-place finish, the highest finish by a UNO team since the season. The Mavericks got stronger as the year progressed. The team was just entering a weekend series with Northern Michigan in late January. The Mavs had already lost a pair of games to the Wildcats in November at Marquette, but they turned the tables in the rematch, winning by scores of 7-2 and 5-3 to ignite a strong run in the final six weeks of the season. Blais led UNO to a record of in the final 12 games. During that string, the Mavericks won at Notre Dame for the first time in nearly five years, beating the Irish 5-3 in the first game of the weekend series. They also earned their first ever series sweep over Michigan, a team they had beaten just four times in 31 prior meetings, with 4-3 and 4-1 wins at Qwest Center Omaha. The Mavs also beat then-top ranked Miami 4-2 in Oxford, Ohio on Feb. 20 and followed that with a 3-2 win over then-sixth ranked Bemidji State the following weekend to close the regular season. Blais found a way to get the most from his players in his first season at UNO. Eleven different players registered career highs in either goals, assists or points during the campaign. Moreover, Blais vaunted conditioning program paid big dividends as the Mavericks were unbeaten (14-0-3) when leading after the second period. In late December of 2010, Blais took over the reins of U.S. Junior Team at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. He led the U.S. to a record of The Americans capped it off with a 6-5 overtime win over host country Canada in the gold medal game on Jan. 5, just the second gold ever won by the U.S. in the World Junior tournament. In March of 2011, it was announced that Blais will reprise his role as U.S. Junior Team head coach, once again leading a team into Canada in search of another gold medal. Blais came to UNO from the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League where he served as head coach and general manager. As head coach of an expansion team in , Blais led the Force to a record of The team advanced to the USHL s Clark Cup Finals before losing to the Indiana Ice three games to one. He was named USHL Coach of the Year, and the Force were named Organization of the Year. As a college coach, Blais won NCAA Division I national championships as the head coach of the University of North Dakota in 1997 and The Fighting Sioux were runners up in 2001, the last of five straight NCAA appearances under Blais. Overall, the native of International Falls, Minn. guided North Dakota to seven NCAA appearances, five regular season WCHA titles and two WCHA playoff championships in addition to the national championships. Blais is a two-time winner of the Spencer Penrose Memorial Award given to the Division I coach of the year. He is a four-time WCHA coach of the year honoree. He was (.679), including five 30-win seasons, at North Dakota. In total, he spent 19 seasons with the Fighting Sioux, nine as an assistant and ten as the head coach. In that time, he coached 60 NHL draft picks, 28 All-Americans, three WCHA players of the year, four WCHA rookies of the year, 40 members of the All-WCHA team and 11 All-WCHA rookie team picks. In addition to coaching Team USA in 2010, Blais was the head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team in 1993 and an

4 DEAN BLAIS cont. assistant in 1987 and He was an assistant for Team USA in the 2000 IIHF World Championships. He also worked for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League from He served as associate head coach during the season and as director of player development in Blais played college hockey at the University of Minnesota from In 124 games, he had 56 goals and 83 assists for 139 points. He was the Gophers Rookie of the Year in 1970 and was an NCAA All-Tournament selection in After college, he played three seasons of pro hockey with the Chicago Blackhawks development team in Dallas, Texas. He began his college career as an assistant at Minnesota in and then was the head coach at Minot (N.D.) High School from before his stint as an assistant at North Dakota. Blais left UND to be the head coach at Roseau (Minn.) High School in where he led his team to the Minnesota State Championship. His team was the conference and regional champion in He then left to serve as assistant coach of the U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Team that took fourth place in the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France. After the Olympics, Blais returned to the high school ranks as athletic director and hockey coach at International Falls (Minn.) High School before rejoining North Dakota as head coach in In April of 2010, Blais signed a contract extension with UNO taking him through the season. Blais is the father of three grown children: Sarah, Ben and Mary Beth. Dean Blais has led the Mavericks to back-to-back 20-win seasons for just the second time in school history. In , he guided the Mavs to a third-place finish in their first year in the WCHA. It s the highest-ever conference finish for a UNO team. 5 Scouting This Week s Opponent Colorado College Location: Colorado Springs, Colo. Conference: WCHA Enrollment: 2,000 Nickname: Tigers Colors: Black and Gold Arena: Colorado Springs World Arena Dimensions: 200 x 100 Capacity: 7, Record: , WCHA (6th) Website: Head Coach: Scott Owens (13th season) Career Record: Alma Mater: Colorado College (1979) Assistant Coaches: Joe Bonnett, Eric Rud Briefly Friday s win in Madison was the first for UNO in Wisconsin. The Mavericks had been before that game. Friday s win also extended UNO s winning streak over Wisconsin to three games before the Badgers answered back on Saturday. Terry Broadhurst, Alex Hudson and Matt White led the Mavericks in scoring last week with five points each. Broadhurst had a team-best three goals, including two on the power play, while Hudson earned both of his goals with the man advantage. White had a team-best four assists. Thanks to the five-point weekends, White moved into a four-way tie for third in scoring among WCHA players for all games played with 12 points. Broadhurst is now in a tie for seventh with 11. White (3-6-9) and Broadhurst (5-3-8) each have put together five-game point streaks while freshman Jayson Megna (1-4-5), with three assists last weekend, has points in four straight games. White leads the Mavericks in points with 12 and assists with nine. He also has a team-leading 39 shots. Broadhurst has a team-best seven goals and four powerplay goals. His +4 rating is also a team-best. Zahn Raubenheimer leads the Mavericks with 17 penalty minutes while Andrej Sustr has a team-leading 10 blocks. Friday s win over Wisconsin was the first for UNO when trailing after two periods. The Mavericks will play 12 out of their 18 road games this season in the first half of the season. They have just three road series after Jan. 1, On Target Early Terry Broadhurst has already scored seven goals this season, more than double the next highest player on the UNO roster. He is more than halfway toward reaching his career high for goals in a season, 13, which he set in 42 games during his freshman year. He had 11 during his injury-shortened sophomore season. Broadhurst also paces the Mavericks with four powerplay goals. He set a career high and led the team with seven powerplay goals during his freshman season. Powering Up UNO s power play began the weekend at Wisconsin with modest numbers but after going 6-for 11 (54.5%) in the two-game series, it has jumped up to second-best in the WCHA for all games at 25.7% (9/35). For the weekend, UNO earned six of its eight goals on the power play but also surrendered three powerplay tallies after allowing only one through the first six games. Points: POS GP G A PTS +- PIM Rylan Schwartz F Jaden Schwartz F Scott Winkler F Mike Boivin D Gabe Guentzel D Eammon McDermott D William Rapuzzi F Goalies: GP W L T GAA SV% SO Joe Howe Josh Thorimbert Drama King Alex Hudson has a knack for drama, scoring the winning goal in Friday s 5-4 victory with 20.8 seconds remaining in the third period. Last season, Hudson scored with.3 seconds remaining to give UNO a 1-0 win over visiting North Dakota on Nov. 20. In just four games so far this season, he has two goals and five points and is tied for fourth in team scoring. First Goals and Wins Goaltender Ryan Massa earned his first collegiate win in Friday s 5-4 win at Wisconsin. The freshman out of Littleton, Colo. made 18 saves. Jayson Megna s goal in UNO s 3-1 win over UAA on Oct. 22 was his first collegiate goal and came just one day after he registered his first collegiate point. Fellow frosh Josh Archibald scored his first goal in his first collegiate game on Oct. 7 against Mercyhurst. He added another the following night against Colgate. To this point, they are the only Maverick freshmen to score this season. Team Play The Mavericks moved up the WCHA scoring chart with eight goals last weekend. They now rank 8th in goals for (3.00) for all games played, trailing St. Cloud State which averages The Mavs took a hit on defense last weekend, allowing 10 goals against. That dropped them from second to a four-way tie for fourth in goals against (3.00) with Alaska Anchorage, Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud. In addition to their power play success, the Mavs are second in the WCHA on the penalty kill (20/24, 83.3%) behind only Minnesota. Last year, they were one of the WCHA s most penalized teams, but this year the Mavericks are tied for seventh with Bemidji State, averaging 12.1 penalty minutes per game. Another Bumper Crop One year after welcoming 10 new players to their roster, the Mavericks bring in 10 more freshmen. Of that group, six are fowards, two are defensemen and two are goaltenders. Seven of those players are graduates of the United States Hockey League while two played their junior hockey in Canada. Forward Josh Archibald begins his college career directly from the Minnesota high school ranks. All 10 players are Americans. Home Ice Advantage UNO is (.744) at home during the Dean Blais era and are this season. The Mavericks finished the season with an overall home record of In those games, the Mavericks outscored opponents and outshot them Their power play at home clicked at 15.6 percent

6 (14/90) while the penalty kill was successful 87.3 percent of the time (69/79). UNO finished the season with a record of at Qwest Center Omaha. UNO is (.590) all-time on home ice. History vs. Colorado College Suffice it say, there isn t much history between these two schools. Before the Mavericks joined the WCHA last season, they had only played Colorado College in the opening round of the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska on Oct. 13, 2006, a game that ended in a 2-2 tie. Last year, UNO spent much of the first game of its first WCHA series with CC in the penalty box. The Mavericks were whistled for 42 minutes in penalties, and the Tigers enjoyed 11 power plays en route to a 5-2 win. Omaha native Nick Dineen had a hat trick for the Tigers. The next night, the Mavericks picked up just five minors in a 3-0 shutout at World Arena. John Faulkner stopped 24 shots for the win. Polling Places For the third week in a row, the Mavericks were unranked but did receive votes in one of the weekly Division I polls. Prior to their current drought, the last time the Mavs weren t ranked in the top 15 by USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine or the top 20 tabulated by USCHO.com was Oct. 4, The Mavs were 14th in both polls in the preseason, the same position in which they finished the campaign. Last year, the Mavs spent four weeks ranked fourth in both polls, their highest position ever in the weekly polls. They were in the top 10 for 12 straight weeks, the longest stretch in school history. They had 22 weeks ranked in the top 15 and 13 weeks in the top 10. Applying Some Whitewash John Faulkner set the standard for shutouts in a season by a UNO goalie, earning six during the season. He entered this season just one from tying Dan Ellis for the UNO lead in career shutouts which Ellis accomplished over three seasons. In Faulkner s three wins this year, he has allowed just one goal in each and has a save percentage of.948. He carried a shutout into the third period of two of those games. Faulkner finished last year tied with RIT s Shane Madolora and Yale s Ryan Rondeau for the NCAA shutout lead. The native of Sarnia, Ontario pitched four shutouts at home and two on the road. Faulkner would probably tell you he had plenty of help in earning those goose eggs. UNO had posted just four total shutouts in the three prior seasons combined. The Schedule Again this year, the Mavericks will play 36 regular-season games including 28 against WCHA teams. They are in a schedule grouping with Colorado College, Denver and Bemidji State so that they play each of those teams four times (two home, two road) and the other eight members twice each. In addition, the Mavericks have non-conference series with independent Alabama-Huntsville (Dec. 2 and 3) at the Nashville Predators home, Bridgestone Arena and at home against Quinnipiac of the ECAC (Dec. 30 and 31). UNO will play in two tournaments as well. The Mavs host the 2011 Mutual of Omaha Stampede on Oct. 7 and 8, playing Mercyhurst of Atlantic Hockey in the opener and either Robert Morris of Atlantic Hockey or Colgate of the ECAC in the finale. The following week, the Mavs head north to Alaska to take part in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush (Oct. 14 and 15) in Grand Forks Herald Coaches Preseason Poll (First place votes) 1. 7 Fairbanks. They ll play WCHA neighbor Alaska Anchorage on Friday and then renew acquaintances with old CCHA rival Alaska the following night. Preseason WCHA Polls Following a third-place finish last season, WCHA coaches and media think the Mavericks have a shot of finishing in the top four again this season. In a pair of polls released prior to the start of the season, the Mavs were picked to finish fourth. The annual coaches poll is conducted by the Grand Forks Herald and the annual media poll is conducted by Duluth, Minn. radio station 94X. UNO even received one first-place vote in the media poll. Denver was the unanimous choice to win the MacNaughton Cup while North Dakota and Colorado College swapped the 2-3 spots. See complete poll results on the previous page. In addition, the 94X Radio poll selected an All-WCHA pre-season team with UNO s John Faulkner receiving votes for goaltender. Dean Blais also received votes for pre-season Coach of the Year honors. Shooting Gallery Under Dean Blais, the Mavericks have been a prolific shooting team, and that has not changed this season. UNO has outshot opponents including an advantage at Wisconsin last weekend.
