3 DEAN BLAIS Head Coach 2nd Season Minnesota (1973) Career Record at UNO: (.600) Overall Record: (.671) 2 Career NCAA Championships 7 Career NCAA Tournament Appearances 10 Career Winning Seasons Dean Blais burnished his already exceptional credentials as one of the nation s finest coaches during his first season as the head coach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He led the Mavericks to just their fourth 20-win season in school history, a season that included wins over the number one-ranked team in the country, Miami, and the sixth-ranked team, Bemidji State. He also stepped away from his UNO duties for a magical two weeks in which he led the U.S. Junior Team to a gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Championship in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Blais became only the second coach in UNO hockey history on June 12, 2009, succeeding Mike Kemp. In his first year in Omaha, he guided the Mavericks to a record of overall record and a record in their final season in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The record was good for a sixth-place finish, the highest finish by a UNO team since the season. Typical of previous Blais-coached teams, the Mavericks got stronger as the year progressed. The team was just entering a weekend series with Northern Michigan in late January. The Mavs had already lost a pair of games to the Wildcats in November at Marquette, but they turned the tables in the rematch, winning by scores of 7-2 and 5-3 to ignite a strong run in the final six weeks of the season. Blais led UNO to a record of in the final 12 games. During that string, the Mavericks won at Notre Dame for the first time in nearly five years, beating the Irish 5-3 in the first game of the weekend series. They also earned their first ever series sweep over Michigan, a team they had beaten just four times in 31 prior meetings, with 4-3 and 4-1 wins at Qwest Center Omaha. The Mavs also beat then-top ranked Miami 4-2 in Oxford, Ohio on Feb. 20 and followed that with a 3-2 win over then-sixth ranked Bemidji State the following weekend to close the regular season. Blais found a way to get the most from his players in his first season at UNO. Eleven different players registered career highs in either goals, assists or points during the campaign. Moreover, Blais vaunted conditioning program paid big dividends as the Mavericks were unbeaten (14-0-3) when leading after the second period. In late December, Blais took over the reins of U.S. Junior Team at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. He led the U.S. to a record of The Americans capped it off with a 6-5 overtime win over host country Canada in the gold medal game on Jan. 5, just the second gold ever won by the U.S. in the World Junior tournament. It figures that Blais will have a good knowledge of many of the players who will oppose his team during their first year in the WCHA. Five members of Team USA came from the WCHA including current players John Ramage (Wisconsin), Matt Donovan (Denver), Danny Kristo (North Dakota), Jake Gardiner (Wisconsin) and Mike Lee (St. Cloud). Blais came to UNO from the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League where he served as head coach and general manager. As head coach of an expansion team in , Blais led the Force to a record of The team advanced to the USHL s Clark Cup Finals before losing to the Indiana Ice three games to one. He was named USHL Coach of the Year, and the Force were named Organization of the Year. As a college coach, Blais won NCAA Division I national championships as the head coach of the University of North Dakota in 1997 and The Fighting Sioux were runners up in 2001, the last of five straight NCAA appearances under Blais. Overall, the native of International Falls, Minn. guided North Dakota to seven NCAA appearances, five regular season WCHA titles and two WCHA playoff championships in addition to the national championships. Blais is a two-time winner of the Spencer Penrose Memorial Award given to the Division I coach of the year. He is also a three-time WCHA coach of the year honoree. He was (.679), including five 30-win seasons, at North Dakota. In total, he spent 19 seasons with the Fighting Sioux, nine as an assistant and ten as the head coach. In that time, he coached 60 NHL draft picks, 28 All-Americans, three WCHA players of the year, four WCHA rookies of the year, 40 members of the All-WCHA team and 11 All-WCHA rookie team picks. In addition to coaching Team USA in 2010, Blais was the head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team in 1993 and an assistant in 1987 and He was an assistant for Team USA in the 2000 IIHF World Championships. He also worked for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League from He served as associate head coach during the season and as director of player development in Blais played college hockey at the University of Minnesota from In 124 games, he had 56 goals and 83 assists for 139 points. He was the Gophers Rookie of the Year in 1970 and was an NCAA All-Tournament selection in After college, he played three seasons of pro hockey with the Chicago Blackhawks development team in Dallas, Texas. In April of 2010, Blais signed a contract extension with UNO taking him through the season. BLAIS YEAR-BY-YEAR COACHING RECORDS NORTH DAKOTA Overall Conference NCAA Tournament Year Season W L T Pct. Their previous best start after eight games was during the season when they went overall. UNO is also in league play for the first time in school history. Their previous best start after four conference games was which they did in , and Polling Places The Mavericks began the week ranked sixth in the USCHO.com poll and seventh in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll, their fourth straight week in the top 10. The Mavs received a first-place vote in the USCHO.com poll, the first in program history. The highest ranking UNO has ever achieved was on Oct. 29, 2001 when they were ranked fifth following a sweep of then-number one Michigan State. Fitting In UNO s large freshman class has looked right at home so far this season. All nine freshman skaters to have played have registered at least a point over the first eight games led by Matt White who has five goals and four assists. Seven of those players have scored their first collegiate goals including White, Zahn Raubenheimer and Johnnie Searfoss who each scored a goal in his first college game. Raubenheimer s was the Mavericks first of the year, and it stood up as the game winner against Clarkson. Defenseman Bryce Anelsoski, a sophomore in class standing, and Andrej Sustr each scored his first collegiate goal against Minnesota State last weekend. In addition, freshmen Brock Montpetit, Michael Young, Ryan Walters and Tony Turgeon all notched assists in their first college games. Alex Simonson is the only freshman skater yet to play because of injury. Freshman goaltender Mike Taffe has backed up but not seen action this season. Career Day Freshman Johnnie Searfoss had the most productive game of his young career with two goals and an assist against Minnesota State on Nov. 5. He is the fourth UNO player to post a two-goal game this season. Alex Hudson did so most recently on Oct. 15 at Minnesota. Mavericks vs. Huskies - A History Lesson UNO and St. Cloud State have not played each other since the season. The Huskies are all-time in the series with each game being played in St. Cloud s National Hockey Center. The first meeting was the closest as the Mavericks lost 2-1 on Jan. 9, 1998 during their first season of play. Jason Cupp had UNO s only goal, and goalie Jason Mitchell stopped 35 shots. Cupp Leading Scorers: POS GP G A PTS PIM +/- Drew LeBlanc F Nick jensen D Garrett Roe F Ben Hanowski F Aaron Marvin F Brett Barta D Goalies: GP W L T GAA SV% SO Dan Dun Mike Lee Upcoming Games: Nov. 19 and 20: at Alaska Anchorage Dec. 3 and 4: at North Dakota had both goals the next night as the Mavericks lost, 6-2. Given that St. Cloud shutout the Mavericks in two meetings the following season, Cupp remains the only Maverick to ever score against the Huskies. Faulkner Earns Honor Goaltender John Faulkner was named the Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Nov. 9. Faulkner stopped 52 of 55 shots to earn wins over Minnesota State on Nov. 5 and 6. He finished the weekend with a 1.50 GAA and.945 save percentage and in the process became the fastest goalie to reach seven wins (7-1-0) in UNO history. More Awards The Mavericks have earned three WCHA Player of the Week Awards so far this season. Defenseman Eric Olimb took home the honor on Oct. 18 after registering four assists, five blocked shots and a +4 rating in UNO s weekend sweep of Minnesota. UNO earned two weekly awards after the first weekend of the regular season. Goaltender John Faulkner was named the Red Baron Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Matt White was named a co-winner of the Red Baron Rookie of the Week Award on Oct. 12. Faulkner earned his first career shutout in an 8-0 win over Clarkson on Oct. 8, stopping all 26 shots. He turned aside 23 more the next night in a 5-3 win over RIT and was named to the Mutual of Omaha Stampede all-tournament team. White earned two goals and two assists on the weekend to share the award with Milos Gordic of Michigan Tech. White had nine shots on goal and finished the weekend with a +4 rating. Closing in on 2,000,000 The Mavericks will welcome their 2,000,000th fan to a home contest on Friday, Nov. 19 when they host North Dakota. Road Work With a start away from home, the Mavericks are just one win from equaling their total of road wins during the season. UNO was away from Qwest Center Omaha last year, their lowest total of road wins since they went away from home during the season. In that same season, they posted a school low eight total wins. Among The League Leaders To begin the weekend, Rich Purslow is tied with two other players for second in WCHA scoring for all games with 14 points, in spite of playing two fewer

5 games than every other player in the top 10. Joey Martin, Matt Ambroz, Alex Hudson and Terry Broadhurst are part of a six-way tie for 18th in scoring with 10 points. Ambroz is in a three-way tie for eighth in goals with 6 while Purslow is tied with two players for the WCHA assist lead at 10. Eric Olimb is tied for sixth in the league in defenseman scoring with eight points. Matt White is in a three-way tie for fifth in WCHA freshman scoring with nine points. Team Play Following last weekend against Minnesota State, the Mavericks strengthened their hold on scoring in the WCHA. UNO now averages 4.62 goals/game to lead for all games played. UNO ranks third in goals against per game at UNO has registered a powerplay goal in six of its eight games this season (10/38, 26.3%) and ranks third on the power play. The Mavericks surrendered their first two powerplay goals at home on Nov. 6 against Minnesota State but continue to lead the league while shorthanded (34/39, 87.2%). UNO is also the most penalized team in the WCHA, averaging 19.9 minutes per game. Tournament Hardware The Mavericks won the Mutual of Omaha Stampede, their traditional season-opening tournament, for the fourth straight year. In so doing, forward Matt Ambroz, defenseman Eric Olimb and goaltender John Faulkner were all named to the all-tournament team. In addition, Ambroz was named the Stampede MVP for earning three goals, two assists and a +3 rating in the two games. Good Start UNO was impressive in its first weekend of the new season with wins over Clarkson and RIT. The Mavericks put up 13 goals while allowing just three and outshot their opponents, All but one of 23 skaters got into action that weekend with 17 registering at least a point. UNO s special teams had a good weekend as well. The Mavs earned four powerplay goals in 14 chances (28.6%) while their penalty killers turned aside all eight advantages for their opponents. Taking Their Shots The Mavericks have outshot opponents so far this year and have averaged just less than 40 shots per game. The Mavs put 60 shots on goal in their 8-0 win over Clarkson on Oct 8. It was the second highest total in school history and the most in a 60-minute game. The previous 60-minute record was 57 at Bemidji State on Feb. 19, The school record for all games is 66 set in a triple overtime playoff game with Alaska on March 9, Making History vs. Michigan UNO s win over Michigan on Oct. 22 was its first-ever regular season win at Yost Ice Arena and ended a ninegame road losing streak to the Wolverines. The Mavericks earned their first ever series sweep of Michigan in their last ever meeting as members of the CCHA. UNO won 4-3 and 4-1 at Qwest Center Omaha on Feb. 12 and 13 of this year. The wins ended a nine-game winless streak at the hands of the Wolverines (0-8-1) and were just the fifth and sixth wins the Mavs had posted against Michigan all-time. The Mavs only win in Ann Arbor prior to Oct. 22 came on March 13, 2004 when they won game two of a CCHA playoff series, 3-1, to force a deciding game three. Shutout Effort UNO earned a shutout in its first game of the season. John Faulkner had 26 saves in an 8-0 win over Clarkson on Oct. 8, his first career shutout. Last season, the Mavericks had just one shutout in 42 games, a 4-0 blanking of Lake Superior State on Nov. 13, UNO has posted four total shutouts in the three prior seasons. Season Openers UNO is all-time in season openers following its 8-0 win over Clarkson on Oct. 8. The Mavericks have won four straight season-opening games and are unbeaten in their last seven to start a season (6-0-1). UNO s last loss to start the regular season was Oct. 10, 2003 when it lost to Wisconsin, 4-3 in overtime. This is the fourth straight year the Mavericks have opened the season at home. Their last opener away from home was on Oct. 13, 2006 when they played to a 2-2 with Colorado College in the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. Successful Exhibition The Mavericks earned a win in their only exhibtion game of the season, beating the University of British Columbia, 6-1 on Oct. 2. Matt White had two goals including the game-winner, Alex Hudson had a goal and an assist, and Terry Broadhurst added two helpers. All three goalies played a period with John Faulkner earning the victory with eight saves. UNO is all-time in exhibtion games. WEEKLY POLLS USCHO.com Poll (11/8/10) Team Pts. Last 1. Another Fin, Juha Uotila, skated for UNO from , and Tomas Klempa from Slovakia earned four letters from The Schedule This year, the Mavericks will play 36 regular season games including 28 against WCHA teams. They will be in a schedule grouping with North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Bemidji State so that they will play each of those teams four times (two home, two road) and the other eight members twice each. In addition, the Mavericks will have non-conference series with former CCHA foe Michigan (Oct. 22 and 23), Quinnipiac University of the ECAC (Dec. 30 and 31) and independent Alabama-Huntsville (Jan. 28 and 29). UNO also will play Clarkson of the ECAC and 2010 Frozen Four participant RIT of Atlantic Hockey in the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Stampede. Making Acquaintances The Mavericks will have three new opponents on the schedule this season. They have never faced off against Clarkson, North Dakota or Quinnipiac. It s also been a while since some of the other series had a fresh coat of paint. The dustiest of those all-time series is the one with RIT.
