MSU and UAA play in Mankato at Verizon Wireless Center (4,832) Friday (7:37 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.). Amongst the Ranks: Including this week, the Mavericks have appeared in the receiving votes category of the USCHO.poll in eight of the last nine weeks. (see page 5 of this release for additional poll information). About the MSU-UAA Series: In a series that dates back to the season, MSU leads the all-time series with Alaska Anchorage, MSU went in four games played against the Seawolves last year. MSU Most Recently: The winners of their last four games, the Mavericks stand overall and are WCHA in their most-recent action and 6-1 wins over Bemidji State in a pair league games played in Mankato last weekend. Saturday vs. Bemidji State - Minnesota State won for the fourth consecutive time with a 6-1 win over visiting Bemidji State Saturday in Mankato. The Mavericks, who had skated to a 3-0 victory over the Beavers Friday, tallied four power play goals in the dominating victory. Sophomore defenseman Brett Stern got things rolling at 5:59 of the first with his first career goal coming after he collected a rebound and wristed a shot past Mathieu Dugas. Junior forward Johnny McInnis made it 2-0 at 12:21 with a power play goal and sophomore forward Chase Grant s power play goal at 15:10 of the second made it 3-0. Sophomore forward Matt Leitner s even-strength tally at the 17-minute mark of the second gave the Mavericks a 4-0 lead. Junior forward Josh Nelson s power play goal at 7:23 of the third and a goal from senior forward Eriah Hayes at 7:23 (his team-leading eighth of the year), rounded out the scoring for MSU. Danny Mattson scored for BSU at 13:07 closed out the scoring in the game. The Mavericks, who outshot the Beavers by a margin in the game, have now won four games in conference play for the first time since the season. Stern also had an assist in the game for a two-point night and sophomore forward Teddy Blueger was credited with three assists. Leitner has extended his pointscoring streak to eight games ( ), Hayes owns a six-game point scoring streak (6-2--8) and freshman forward Dylan Margonari is riding a five-game streak (2-5--7). 2 Minnesota State University Men s Hockey - Page Two Minnesota State Head Coach Mike Hastings Mike Hastings was named head coach of the men s hockey program on April 14, Hastings, who becomes the third coach in the history of the Maverick men s hockey program, arrives at MSU following a three-year stint as the associate head coach at Nebraska-Omaha. He also served as an assistant coach with the men s hockey program at Minnesota for one season and before that had a 14-year run as head coach of Omaha of the United States Hockey League. The USHL s all-time winningest coach, Hastings compiled a record with the Lancers, never had a losing season and led Omaha to three Clark Cup titles as the USHL s play-off champions.named USHL Mike Hastings Coach of the Year three times and as the team s general manager, earned league GM of the Year honors five times. Hastings, a native of Crookston, Minn., was an assistant coach for the U.S. national junior team at the 2003 and 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships and served twice as head coach for the U.S. junior select team that competed in the Viking Cup, earning gold medal honors in A 1993 graduate of St. Cloud State, Hastings played the for the Huskies in and before a back injury ended his career. save percentage and 3.39 goals against average in six appearances this year. Friday vs. Bemidji State - Sophomore netminder Stephon Williams stopped every shot he faced in leading Minnesota State to a 3-0 win over long-time rival Bemidji State in a men s hockey contest played in Mankato Friday. Williams, the reigning Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week, turned aside 20 shots from the Beavers in registering his first collegiate shut-out. The Mavericks got one goal in each period in downing BSU, and one goal from three different players in doing so. Freshman forward Dylan Margonari got his fourth goal of the year on a rebound that he slipped past Beaver netminder Mathieu Dugas at 4:22 of the opening period. Then, after taking a between the legs, no-look pass from senior forward Eriah Hayes, junior forward Zach Lehrke tapped the puck into the net at 16:00 of the second period to make it a 2-0 MSU lead. And after Eli Zuck won an offensive-zone face-off, freshman forward Bryce Gervais took a pass from linemate Max Gaede and fired it past Dugas at 15:45 for the game s final goal. MSU outshot BSU by margin in the game. Junior forward Matt Leitner extended his point-scoring streak to seven games with an assist on the game s opening goal by Margonari and on Lehrke s goal now has during that time. Cook is with a Western Collegiate Hockey Association Standings A two-time WCHA All-Academic selection, Elbrecht is in his second season as a team captain for the Mavericks. Eriah Hayes Notes: Senior forward Eriah Hayes, whose highlight reel assist on Zach Lehrke s goal in last Friday s 3-0 win over Bemidji State, owns in 14 games this year. Hayes stands as MSU s active career scoring leader with in 126 career games. He heads into this weekend s action owning a sixgame point-scoring streak (6-2--8). He s tied for 26th in the country in goals per game with a 0.57 mark. A native of LaCrescent, Minn., Hayes led the Mavericks in shots (123) and PIMs (29 for 83) as a junior. Evan Mosey Notes: Senior defenseman Evan Mosey scored his first career shorthanded goal Oct. 27 vs. St. Cloud State. Zach Lehrke Notes: Junior forward Zach Lehrke has racked up in the last eight games and has moved into a tie for seventh on the team s scoring charts with in 14 games. Corey Leivermann Notes: Sophomore forward Corey Leivermann has in two games played this year. Leivermann has in 42 career games with the Mavericks. Johnny McInnis Notes: Junior forward Johnny McInnis ranks second on the team in goals (5) and ranks third on the team in shots on goal for the season with 42. With on the year, the Boston, Mass., native is tied for fourth on the team scoring charts. McInnis finished with in ranking eighth on the team s scoring charts. Gaede, a third-round NHL draft selection by San Jose in 2010 and a native of Woodbury, Minn., has in 44 career games with the Mavericks. Mat Knoll Notes: Sophomore defenseman Mat Knoll, who had in 25 games in inaugural season with MSU last year and was named the team s co-most Improved Player, has not played in , due to injury. The Los Alamitos, Calif., native is tied for 15th in country in points per game (1.29) and is tied for fourth in assists per game (1.00). Leitner, who led the Mavericks in scoring last year as a freshman, has not missed a game in his two-year MSU career and has played in 52 straight contests. Zach Palmquist Notes: Zach Palmquist, MSU s top-scoring defenseman as a freshman last season, has in 52 career games and currently leads MSU defensemen in points (1-6--7) and shots on goal (24). Palmquist has not missed a game in his two-year MSU career. Brett Stern Notes: Sophomore defenseman Brett Stern tallied his first career goal in last Saturday s 6-1 win over visiting Bemidji State. He also added an assist for a two-point night. For his career he owns in 32 games played. Charlie Thauwald Notes: Sophomore forward Charlie Thauwald earned his first career point as a collegian when he drew an assist on Justin Jokinen s goal vs. UMass-Lowell Oct. 15. The Rochester, Minn., native had in six games with the Mavericks in Thauwald has not played in Teddy Blueger Notes: Freshman forward Teddy Blueger racked up three assists as Minnesota State claimed the 6-1 win over Bemidji State last Saturday. Blueger, who has and has played in all 14 MSU games to date, is tied for eighth on the team with a +2. Blueger was chosen in the second round (52nd) overall by Pittsburgh in the 2012 National Hockey League Draft. Jon Jutzi Notes: Freshman defenseman Jon Jutzi, who has played in all 14 MSU games in has on the year. He is +4 (tied for third on team) and has put 12 shots on goal in his debut season with the Mavericks. Stephon Williams Notes: Freshman netminder Stephon Williams, last week s WCHA Rookie of the Week, got his third consecutive win when he stopped all 20 Bemidji State shots in last Friday s 3-0 win over Bemidji State. The shut-out is the first of his collegiate career. He got his fourth straight win when MSU bested the Beavers 6-1 Saturday and in his last four appearances is 4-0 with a 1.25 goals against average and.953 save percentage with 102 saves on 107 shots. For the year Williams stands with a 1.92 goals against average and a.923 save percentage. The shut-out by Williams last Friday shut-out is the first shut-out in WCHA play by a MSU freshman goaltender since Dan Tormey accomplished the feat twice in (4-0 over DU and 4-0 over MTU). Noteables: Minnesota State has held opponents to two power play goals in the last six games and has killed off 22-of-24 opponent power play opportunities during that time. The Mavericks have outscored their opponents by a margin in third-period goals this year. MSU trails in first-period scoring (14-13) and second-period scoring (12-9). The Mavericks are outshooting opponents in Minnesota State, currently tied for fifth in the WCHA standings with ten points on its record, is in the midst of a four-game winning streak. All four wins have been in conference play.
