The Mavericks and the Seawolves square-off at Verizon Wireless Center (4,832) Friday (7:37 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.). About the Series: In a series that dates back to , the Mavericks are all-time vs. the Seawolves. MSU earned a 3-2 win and a 2-2 tie at UAA earlier this year and is in the last 14 games with the Seawolves. MSU head coach Troy Jutting is all-time vs. UAA. MSU Most Recently: Minnesota State stands overall and is WCHA after splitting a home league series with Minnesota Duluth (3-1 win, 6-2 loss) in its last action Feb Senior defenseman Channing Boe had a goal and an assist, as did sophomore forward Eriah Hayes and junior goaltender Austin Lee had 40 saves as MSU downed the fifth-rated Bulldogs in the first game of the two-game league set. Hayes scored again in Saturday s rematch and junior forward Mike Louwerse also scored as the Mavericks fell by a 6-2 margin. About Alaska Anchorage: The Seavolves, who are coming off of a nonconference split with Alaska (5-1 loss and 4-1 win), have gone their last nine contests. UAA is paced offensively by senior forward Tommy Grant ( in 32 GP) and a pair of freshmen forwards in Matt Bailey ( in 30 GP) and Jordan Kwas ( in 31 GP). Freshman Rob Gunderson (7-13-2, 2.78,.897) has started 22 of 32 games in the UAA nets. 2 Minnesota State University Men s Hockey - Page Two MSU On the Web: Tickets, Releases, statistics, player and staff biographies, etc. on all of Minnesota State s 23 sports are available at the official website of MSU Athletics located at MSU Game Recaps: Saturday vs. Minnesota Duluth - #5 Minnesota Duluth used its vaunted power play to roll past Minnesota State, 6-2, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played at Verizon Wireless Center on Saturday night. The Mavericks lit the lamp first with when sophomore Eriah Hayes deflected shot from the blue line by sophomore Eli Zuck at 2:13 in the first period. UMD evened things on a Mike Seidel at 14:06 and at the end of the first period the score stood 1-1. UMD got their first lead of the series at 3:57 in the second period when freshman J.T. Brown put a quick shot past MSU sophomore Phil Cook on the glove side. MSU was quick to respond when junior Mike Louwerse slid the puck past Aaron Crandall, unassisted at 4:50. UMD took back the lead at 9:18 on Seidel s power play goal from the left of the crease. Another UMD goal came at 18:42 when Mike Connolly caught a puck that had bounced out of Cook s pads and put it in for a power play marker. The first UMD goal of the third period came from Brown beat Cook on the stick side at 11:35. UMD tallied the final goal of the night at 17:13 when Justin Fontaine scored with the Bulldogs on the power play. Minnesota State Head Coach Troy Jutting Richfield, Minn., native Troy Jutting (MSU 87) is in his 11th year as head coach of the Mavericks. A former stand-out forward for Minnesota State (145 career points in 136 games from ), Jutting ranks among the school s all-time leaders for career games played, goals, assists, points and single-season points. The third person to serve as head coach of the Mavericks, Jutting spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach with the program prior to being selected as head coach in the summer of A two-time WCHA Coach of the Year ( and ) Jutting owns a (.471) career coaching record. The Troy Jutting Show: The Troy Jutting Show airs Wednesday Troy Jutting nights during the season, 6:30 to 7:00 p.m., on KTOE AM The show, which includes interviews with Coach Jutting and MSU players and guests, takes place at Buffalo Wild Wings in downtown Mankato with Mike Sullivan serving as the host. The Bulldogs outshot the Mavericks 39-25, with Phil Cook stopping 33 UMD shots and Aaron Crandall shutting down 23 MSU chances. UMD converted on three-of-nine power opportunities in the game. Two Bulldogs, Mike Seidel and J.T. Brown, had two goals in the game, while three Bulldogs, Kyle Schmidt, Travis Oleksuk, and Justin Faulk, each had three assists. The Mavericks went zero-for-five in its power play chances. Friday vs. Minnesota Duluth - Two early power play goals gave Minnesota State the momentum it needed for a 3-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over #5 Minnesota Duluth at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato on Friday night. The Mavericks lit the lamp first early on in the first period when sophomore forward Eriah Hayes redirected sophomore Evan Mosey s shot from the point for a power play goal at 5:48. Another MSU power play goal came just minutes later at 8:37 from defenseman Channing Boe, who pounced on a rebound following a Kurt Davis shot from far out and put it past UMD junior Western Collegiate Hockey Association Standings goaltender Kenny Reiter. The goal is Boe s second consecutive game with a power play goal (and the second of his four-year MSU career). The first UMD goal of the night came at 11:56 on a pass that junior Mike Connolly caught from junior Jack Connolly and chipped it in from the left crease over MSU junior goaltender Austin Lee, who was on the ice in front of the net from making an earlier save. MSU closed out the scoring for the period, and the game, on a goal that was the rebound of a shot that freshman Chase Grant had put through the legs of Reiter which bounced off the goalpost and out to crease where freshman Corey Leivermann responded with his third goal of the year at 17:33. Both the second and third periods were scoreless, as neither team was able to take advantage of any of the seven power plays. The Mavericks were outshot by the Bulldogs Including 28 saves in the third period, Austin Lee turned away 40 UMD shots, while Kenny Reiter stopped MSU 24 times. Channing Boe and Eriah Hayes each had a goal and an assist in tonight s game. This was the first win for Minnesota State over Minnesota Duluth since the season. Leading The Way: Senior forward Rylan Galiardi is serving as MSU team captain in Serving as assistant captains for this year are senior defensemen Channing Boe and Ben Youds. The goals are the first two power play goals of his four-year MSU career. Boe, who had a goal and an assist in MSU s 3-1 win over fifth-rated Minnesota Duluth Feb. 18th, scored his second career game-winning goal in the 3-1 win over UMD. His other GWG came in overtime came Feb. 4 when the Mavericks bested Bemidji State, 2-1 at home. Boe has in 127 career games and has played in 73 consecutive games played to stand as MSU s leader in terms of longest active playing streak. A two-time assistant team captain, Boe is a two-time WCHA All-Academic selection. Kurt Davis Notes: Senior defenseman Kurt Davis assisted on Channing Boe s game-winning goal in MSU s 3-1 victory over UMD and is tied for the team scoring with in 34 games. Davis, an All-WCHA Third Team pick as a sophomore in when he led MSU in scoring, has in 146 career games to rank third on MSU s career scoring by defensemen list. Davis, who also ranks as MSU s all-time top-scoring defenseman for MSU s NCAA Division I era (he s tenth overall), is +4 on the year to tie for fourth on the team. Austin Lee Notes: Junior goaltender Austin Lee was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week after he registered his fourth win of the year when he stopped 40 of 41 shots in MSU s 3-1 victory over #5 Minnesota Duluth. Joe Schiller Notes: Junior forward Joe Schiller scored his second shorthanded goal of the year in MSU s 6-2 win at St. Cloud State Feb. 5. The Detroit Lakes, Minn., native has on the year to reach career-highs for goals and points in a season. Schiller was an WCHA All-Academic selection last year. Phil Cook Notes: Sophomore netminder Phil Cook, who has had at least 30 saves in a game eight times this year (out of his 24 games played), stands for with a 3.04 goals against average and.903 save percentage. Cook has three assists for his two-year MSU career,. He had 17 saves in MSU s 1-0 win over American International Jan. 7 for his second career shut-out.
