The game marks the second time in a span of four years the Big Red is playing a Game 3 in Hamden, with the Big Red once again looking to stave off elimination. All of the series games are being streamed through BoxCast on the official ECAC Hockey website. Jason Weinstein will provide play-by-play which can be heard in the Ithaca area on WHCU (870 AM, 95.9 FM). Game 2 Redux: In arguably the wildest game of its season, Cornell stormed back from a pair of twogoal deficits with four goals in the second period, then capped the rally with sophomore forward Trevor Yates goal 5:44 into the third period for a 5-4 victory. Senior forward Christian Hilbrich, junior forward Jeff Kubiak and freshman forward Mitch Vanderlaan each had a goal and an assist, and junior goaltender Mitch Gillam made 11 of his 24 saves in the third period.... Another five of Gillam s saves came with the Big Red still trailing early in the second period on a 52-second two-man disadvantage, which was masterfully killed by the trio of junior forward Eric Freschi, senior defenseman Reece Willcox and freshman defenseman Alec McCrea.... Junior forward Matt Buckles was the Big Red s other goal scorer, swatting in a bouncing puck for an unassisted power-play goal. It was his team-leading fifth goal on the power play this season. With A Twist: Today s game conjures up memories of another quarterfinal Game 3 played three years ago at Quinnipiac. The Bobcats were the nation s No. 1 team in 2013, too, and the upstart Big Red took them to Game 3 before succumbing to a double-overtime goal. This isn t the first time Cornell has had a chance to reverse history this postseason. The Big Red advanced to this point with a first-round sweep of Union, which ended Cornell s 2014 and 2015 seasons. How It All Started: Quinnipiac scored two goals early and another late in the second period to skate away with a 5-2 victory in Friday s Game 1. Entering the middle stanza tied at 1, Travis St. Denis and Thomas Aldworth cashed in rebound goals in the first 2 minutes, 10 seconds, then a power-play goal by Landon Smith with 1:52 left in the period gave the Bobcats a two-goal lead entering the third period. Junior forwards Jake Weidner and Jeff Kubiak scored Cornell s goals on odd-man rushes. Offensive Outburst: Cornell s five goals last night matched a season high, which was previously reached three times (Nov. 13 vs. Colgate, Dec. 5 vs. Clarkson and Jan. 9 vs. Merrimack) though this was the first time the Big Red scored five goals in a road game this season. Last night s four-goal second was also the most goals the Big Red scored in a period since Nov. 16, 2013, when it also potted four in an eventual 5-2 win at St. Lawrence. No Fear: Cornell is now against No. 1-ranked teams this season, with three of those results coming against Quinnipiac. The other was a 2-1 overtime victory on Dec. 28 against Providence, when the defending national champions entered the game undefeated. Oddly enough, that game against the Friars marked the only other time this season in which the Big Red played a game starting in the 4 o clock hour. The Bigger Picture: Last night s win bumped Cornell up one spot to 16th in the Pairwise rankings, but nothing ultimately changed the Big Red still needs to win tonight to keep its season alive. A victory would land Cornell in an ECAC Hockey Championship semifinal against third-seeded Harvard at 4 p.m. Friday in Lake Placid, N.Y.
