The Saints are in their last four and in the last six to climb into a three-way tie for fourth in the ECAC standings with Dartmouth and Rensselaer. That trio stands just three points behind Harvard and Yale, currently tied for second with 21 points while Quinnipiac leads the league with 28 points and could clinch a bye with the proper combination of results this weekend. Quinnipiac comes into Friday s game at Appleton in its fourth straight week atop the USCHO national poll and fifth straight week as number one in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The next highest ranked team to play the Saints in Appleton Arena since the mid 1990s was Boston College, which came in ranked third in the season. The last time a number one ranked team played in Appleton Arena it was the Saints who were number one and Harvard was two...a game won by Harvard in January of The Saints will follow the meeting with Quinnipiac with a game against an improving Princeton squad which will be looking for its first win at Appleton since THREE POINT ROAD WEEKEND: Kyle Hayton recorded his third shutout of the season and moved to within one of the career record of nine set by Bill Sloan in the 1950s with a 34-save shutout of Rensselaer on Friday night. The game was scoreless for the first 54 minutes until Tommy Thompson took a pass from Mike Marnell and scored the eventual game winner with 5:07 to go in regulation. Christian Horn fed Thompson on a nearly identical play 2:51 later to make it 2-0 and Jacob Pritchard added an empty net goal. Pritchard had two goals on Saturday, earning ECAC Rookie of the Week honors, and the Saints came from behind to grab a 3-3 tie at Union, snapping a six-game losing streak in Schenectady. Pritchard and fellow rookie Michael Laidley scored first period goals to give the Saints a 2-1 lead, Union tied it with the only goal of the second and went ahead 4:35 into the third, but Pritchard s second of the night tied it at 13:13 of the third and it stayed that way through overtime as Hayton again had 34 saves, four of them in the extra period. It was the second three point league weekend of the year for the Saints, both coming on the road...princeton-quinnipiac was the other. COACH GREG CARVEL: Greg Carvel is in his fourth season as Saint head coach after posting one of the best records for a first-year coach in program history in his rookie season and earning the Tim Taylor Award as ECAC Coach of the Year last season. The Saints mark in is the best for a first-year Saint coach since George Menard went in his first season, Carvel had his first 20-win season and trip to the ECAC semifinals last year, going Carvel was named the second Charles W. Appleton II Head Men s Hockey Coach in the spring of A 1993 graduate of St. Lawrence and a former Saint hockey captain, he joined the staff as an assistant coach in the fall of He is the 13th head coach in program history. Carvel came to the Saints after a 15-year professional hockey coaching career that included assisting coach duties with the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League, helping both teams reach the Stanley Cup finals. He began his professional career as director of hockey operations for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League and joined Anaheim as scouting coordinator in He added video coaching duties to his title in Anaheim in 2002 and was promoted to assistant coach in He joined the Senators in The winner of the ECAC s Best Defensive Forward Award as a senior at St. Lawrence, Carvel graduated with a bachelor s degree in political science and mathematics. He was an Academic All America and a three-time winner of the Brian McFarlane Award for academic and athletic accomplishments. DeMichiel was an outstanding goaltender for RIT, leading that team to the Frozen Four as a senior. Scott Dexter, an All America at Canton College and a graduate of Hamilton is volunteer assistant coach. Aisha Visram, a 2007 graduate of the University of Guelph, is in her third season as athletic trainer for the Saint men s hockey team. Mike Elberty, a 1979 St. Lawrence graduate, is the Stradling Men s Ice Hockey Strength and Conditioning coach and Ryan Durocher is the video coach for the Saints. Wally Johnson is the sports information director and is in his 41st year with the Saint program. He also handles color duties on the Saint radio broadcasts. Dr. Mark Randall 82, a former Saint player, is the team s consulting clinical sport psychologist. THE BREAKDOWN: The Saint roster includes seven seniors, seven juniors, eight sophomores and five freshmen. The Saints lost two of their top four scorers, among four graduates and a backup goaltender did not return. Of the 20 returnees, four played in all 37 games last year, and four in 36. THE SAINT CAPTAINS: Senior Brian Ward, an assistant captain last season, takes over as the Saint captain for the season and is the Saints leading returning scorer. Ward had nine goals and 17 assists in 37 games for the Saints last season, his second on the squad after transfering from Dartmouth College. He has not missed a game in his two seasons in a Saint uniform and has 17 goals and 26 assists for 43 points in 75 games heading into the current season. Senior Tommy Thompson, who has played in 104 games with 17 goals and 19 assists is one of three assistant captains. Second-team All ECAC defenseman Eric Sweetman, a junior who led all Saint defenders in scoring with five goals and 15 assists and junior wing Alexander Dahl, who had five goals and two assists in 29 games for the Saints last season are the other two assistant captains. That scoreless tie was the first in SLU program history. The Saints are in games played at Appleton Arena. The last time the two teams met when Quinnipiac was ranked number one nationally, the Saints edged the Bobcats 2-1 in Hamden in February of Princeton: The Saints won the earlier meeting between the two teams 5-1 in Princeton and now have a 11-game unbeaten streak against the Tigers (9-0-2) The Saints have won two straight at Appleton, both by shutout. SLU leads the series and is in games played in Canton.

3 SAINTS IN THE PROS: Brandon Bollig (Calgary Flames) and Mike McKenna (Arizona Coyotes) were the only Saints playing in the NHL last season with a number of players playing in the AHL, ECHL or other professional leagues. Rich Peverley recently retired as a player in Dallas after being sidelined by an irregular heartbeat. McKenna spent most of his season in Portland last year while Bollig played in 62 games for Calgary after two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. A host of former players hold significant positions in the NHL. Former goaltender Jacques Martin was the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens and is special assistant to the head coach at Pittsburgh. Ex-defenseman Randy Sexton, former GM at Ottawa and Florida, is now with Pittsburgh as director of scouting.. Bill Torrey, who has a long history of management success in the NHL, was in charge of the search for Martin s replacement as GM in Florida, is the Panthers Alternate Governor and is a member of the NHL Hall of Fame. Former Saint captain and Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero is now GM at New Jersey where long-time scout Paul Castron, a teammate of Shero s is now director of Amateur Scouting. Dan LaPerriere is a pro scout for the Colorado Avalanche, Mike Barnett is senior advisor to the president and general manager of the New York Rangers and is a former Pheonix Coyotes GM, Mark Leach is a scout for the Detroit Red Wings, and Mark Bonneau is a vice president with the Ottawa Senators. Teddy Dent is the coach of the Chicago s top minor league club in Rockford while former defenseman Matt Macdonald took over as head coach of the Cincinnati Cyclones last season. Former Saint player Jamie Baker, who had a 10- year NHL career, is the color commentator and SLU graduate Dan Rousanowsky is the play-by-play announcer for the San Jose Sharks. Mike Keenan became the first coach to win the Stanley Cup and the Kontinental Hockey League championship when he won the Gagarin Cup with the Metallurg Magnitorgosk team in Russia in Peverley became the first Saint to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup as a playing member of the championship team when the Bruins won the cup in June Bollig joined him (along with Dent) in when the Blackhawks won the cup. IN THE AHL AND ECHL; Three former Saints are active in the American Hockey League and three others are currently on rosters in the ECHL. Greg Carey is playing for the Springfield Falcons, his brother Matt is with the Iowa Wilad and Mike McKenna is goaltender for the Portland Pirates in the AHL while Kyle Flanagan and Gunnar Hughes are teammates with Adirondak and Zach Miskovic is playing for the Indy Fuel in the ECHL. PLAYER NOTES 2 Eric Sweetman Jr. Defenseman Assistant Captain Woodbine, MD Youngstown (USHL): Eric scored seven goals and had 11 assists for 18 points from the blue line in 63 games for the Youngstown Phantoms. He was plus-three for the season and had five special teams goals, three on the power play and two shorthanded. In two seasons at Youngstown he scored 11 goals and had 19 assists in 123 games. He attended Ursuline High School and played lacrosse, helping his team to a state championship. He is the son of Mike and Linda Sweetman : Made his collegiate debut in game one against Maine and assisted on Patrick Doherty s game winning goal for his first collegiate point. Scored his first collegiate goal on the power play in game two at Ferris State. He had his first career multi-point game with assists on two of the three goals at Harvard and added an assist at Dartmouth. He finished his rookie season with three goals and 12 assists for 15 points and played in all 38 games. His first career playoff goal was the game winner in overtime in game one of the Brown series and he assisted on two other game-deciding goals : Was a second-team All ECAC selection. Fourth overall and tops among defensemen in scoring with five goals and 15 assists. Had a two-goal game at RPI and a career high three assist night in a home win over Brown. Scored his fifth of the year in the ECAC semifinals against Colgate. Had five multi-point games, best among Saint blueliners. Finished the year plus-21 to lead the team in plus-minus and was second in blocked shots. He was tied fof fifth overall among all ECAC defensemen in scoring : Had a goal and two assists on the opening weekend, assisting on two against Niagara and scoring the third Saint goal against RIT. He had an assist in each game at Penn State. He scored seven points in a six game stretch starting with the Penn State series. He snapped a streak of 11 games without a point with two assists against Yale. His blocked shot in the Colgate game sent Sean McGovern on his way to a breakaway empty netter. Tied for second on the team in plus/minus at plsu-10 and leads in blocked shots with 56. Career vs. Quinnipiac: 5 gm ; vs. Princeton: 5 gm.; / / Ben Masella Jr. Defenseman Montreal, QC Chilliwack (BCHL): Ben Masella joined the Saints from the Chiliwack Chiefs of the BCHL where he scored three goals and had eight assists for 11 points in 54 games. The team went and allowed less than three goals per game in The son of Beny and Janet Masella, he attended Deerfield Academy and played hockey for the team which won the Deerfield Academy Cup : Made his collegiate debut in game one against Maine and had an assist. Played in 12 games as a rookie : Scored his first collegiate goal as part of a two goal, one assist night in his first game of the year at Niagara : Earned his first point of the season as he assisted on the game winner against Niagara. Had two blocked shots in the RIT game. Set up the game winner against Clarkson and had two assists in the Princeton game. Scored his first goal of the season in game two against Northeastern. 4 4 Mike Graham Jr. Defenseman Toronto, ON Kent School: A defenseman who was MVP of the Kent team as a senior, Mike Graham was first team All New England for a team which finished as runner-up in the New England prep league. He scored five goals and had 14 assists. The son of Mike and Cathy Graham, he also played golf at Kent Mike made his first collegiate appearance in game two of the Maine series. He scored his first collegiate goal against Union and it was the game winner as the Saints were the last team to beat the Dutchmen prior to their run to the national title. He played in 18 games as a rookie, missing several due to injury : Scored his lone goal of the year in a 5-4 win over Miami. Had three assists in 23 appearances : Made his debut at UNH and has played in each of the lastfive. Earned his first point of the year with an assist against Union. Had an assist at Princeton. Was injured blocking a shot at Cornell and missed the next three games. Sustained another injury against Clarkson in game two of the rivalry series and is out indefinitely. Career vs. Quinnipiac: 2 gm ; vs. Princeton: 3 gm / / Gavin Bayreuther Jr. Defenseman Canaan, NH Fargo (USHL): A defenseman who was named to the USHL All Rookie team while playing for the Fargo Force, Gavin Bayreuther scored nine goals and had 24 assists while helping his team to the Western Conference championship. He earned All New England first team honors in both hockey and lacrosse while playing for the Holderness School in 2012 and also played soccer for Holderness. He is the son of John and Jessica Bayreuther : The ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year and a second-team All ECAC defenseman, Gavin was one of the outstanding young defensemen in the nation in his rookie season. He was third in the country in scoring by defensemen with nine goals and 27 assists, and the top-scoring rookie defenseman and fifth overall among all rookies. He had six power play goals among his nine for the season and assisted on three game winning goals : Selected as a pre-season ECAC All Star and is the only sophomore among that group...one of two sophomores selected as one of college hockey s impact defensemen for Was the second leading scorer among Saint blue lines with six goals and 11 assists for 17 points and scored four game winning goals. Tied for fifth among ECAC players and was the top defenseman in game-winners He had 29 blocked shots and was plus-eight for the season. Seventh in overall scoring among ECAC defensemen. Scored the game-tying extra attacker goal against Colgate in the ECAC semifinals to force overtime : Had a goal and an assist in the RIT game, scoring his fifth career game-winner. Scored his second of the year to open the scoring at UNH. Took over the Saint scoring lead with a goal and three assists in the Union-RPI series. Leads the Saints and is second among ECAC defensemen in scoring with six goals and seven assists. Scored his second game-winner of the year and sixth of his career against Clarkson. Scored a goal in each game at Cornell and Colgate...the Colgate goal from the faceoff dot in his own end and into the empty net. He shares the Saint scoring lead with 17 points and is ninth on the Saint all-time scoring list for defensemen with 73 career points. He scored the tying goal and set up the overtime winner against Cornell. Had three assists in the RPI-Union road set and has a goal and four assists in his last three starts. Tied for the lead in scoring among all ECAC defensemen. Career vs. Quinnipiac: 5 gm ; vs. Princeton: 5 gm / / Nolan Gluchowski So Defenseman Wixom, MI Sioux Falls (USHL): Nolan scored three goals and had 22 assists in 58 games for Sioux Falls last season. He was a member of the state championship team at Detroit Catholic Central and a first-team All State selection in 2012 and a second team choice in He also played baseball. He is the son of Paul and Jill Gluchowski : Named to the ECAC All Rookie Team and was eighth overall among defensemen in scoring with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points. Scored his first collegiate point with an assist in game one at RIT and scored his first collegiate goal at Niagara in game two. Missed the next eight with an injury, but did not miss a start the rest of the way. Had two assists in game two of the ECAC series with RPI for his first post-season points : Went plus-four on opening weekend and earned his first point of the year with an assist against Had an assist in each game in the Union-RPI set. Had a three-game scoring streak snapped at Princeton. Scored his first two goals of the year in the first period at Colgate, his first career multi-goal game. 5 9 Alex Hagen Sr Forward Bronxvville, NY Surrey (BCHL): The first second generation Saint player since Andre Dalbec, who played in the and seasons, Alex is the son of former Saint forward Kevin Hagen 82 and his wife Caroline. Kevin was a three-year regular for the Saints. Alex scored 43 points in 57 games for the Surrey Eagles in the British Columbia Hockey League prior to joining the Saints The MVP at Choate-Rosemary Hall in 2009, he had 20 goals and 23 assists for Surrey : Made his collegiate debut at Western Michigan...he scored his first collegiate point with an assist at Northeastern...he was injured in the Colgate game returned to action against Vermont. He played in 34 of 38 as a rookie : Alex was named the Saints Most Improved Player for after scoring four goals and assisting on five in 32 games as a sophomore. He scored his first collegiate goal in game two of the Northeastern series and had his first multi-point game with a goal and an assist. Recorded his first collegiate post-season point with an assist on the game winner in game two of the Brown series : Played in 18 games including all three playoff games. Had an assist in each of the RPI quarterfinal games. Had a goal and an assist in game two at Niagara : Opened the scoring against RIT with his sixth career goal and earned his first assist of the year at UNH. Had a goal and an assist in game two of the Penn State series. Scored his third of the year to ignite a four-goal second against Union. Forward Manotick, ON Green Bay (USHL): The Green Bay Gamblers team MVP in 2014, Ryan scored 19 goals and had 23 assists in 60 games last season. He had 11 special teams points inlcuding five short handed goals and six game-winners. Prior to playing for Green Bay, he was a member of the BCHL Island Division Champion Alberni Valley Bulldogs and earned that team s Bob Fenton Trophy for sportsmanship. He also played rugby and baseball and Athol Murray College of Notre Dame and earned the Chancellor Frederick W. Hill Scholarship and was a Dean s honor roll member for grades He is the son of Steve and Gigi Lough : Scored his first collegiate point with an assist at Niagara. His first collegiate goal came in the 5-4 win at Miami. Had three goals and five assists in 36 games with two multi-point games : Scored the game winner against Niagara and assisted on the Saints fourth goal against RIT. Had an assist at UNH to run his scoring streak to three games. Earned his third assist of the year against Union. Scored his second of the season at Princeton and had an assist in each of the games at Cornell and Colgate. Assisted on the lone Saint goal at Clarkson. Returned to action against Colgate and Cornell after sustaining a injury in the Clarkson game. Career vs Quinnipiac: 3 gm ; vs. Princeton: 2 gm / / Ross McMullen Sr. Defenseman Las Vegas, NV Camrose (AJHL): An outstanding defenseman for the Camrose Kodiaks in junior hockey, Ross scored three goals and had seven assists in 20 games. He was a high honors graduate at Advanced Technology Academy and played for the Boston Junior Bruins on an Empire JHL championship team prior to his season with Camrose. The son of Brian and Lynn McMullan, he intends to major in economics and Spanish. He is the first player in program history from Las Vegas :Made his collegiate debut in game two of the Western Michigan series and played in 14 games as a rookie : Made his first appearance of the season in game two at RIT and scored his first collegiate goal. He played in 11 games as a sophomore : Ross did not play in any games for the Saints as a junior : Made his initial appearance of the year at Merrimack and has played in five of ten, alternating in the lineup in each of the last two weekends. 6 12 Sean McGovern Sr. Forward Milton, ON Surrey (BCHL): A junior standout for the Surrey Eagles, Sean McGovern scored 19 goals and had 20 assists for 39 points in 59 games in his final junior season.. A graduate of Taft and the hockey team MVP in 2011, he also played lacrosse in prep school. The son of Kevin and Elaine McGovern he intends to major in economics. His father played collegiate hockey against the Saints at Concordia in Montreal :The Saint team Rookie of the Year, Sean played in all 38 games, recording eight assists in He scored his first career point in a 5-2 win at Northeastern and assisted on a pair of game-winning goals including the winner in the RIT game which was the 1000th win in program history. He also had an assist in a 2-1 win at nationally top-ranked Quinnipiac in February : Scored his first collegiate goal on a breakaway in the Cornell game. He played in 19 games as a sophomore and had a goal and an assist : Sean had his best year as a Saint in his junior season, scoring seven goals and assisting on seven others. He had a two-goal night in a win at Brown which started a three game streak in which he scored four of his seven goals. He had a career-best five game scoring streak : Set up the first two Saint goals of the season and picked up his third assist of the weekend on the first goal against RIT. Scored his first goal of the year in game two of the Miami series.had a shorthanded goal and an assist in game two at Penn State. Had a goal and an assist at Colgate for his third two-point night of the season. Scored his fourth of the year at Harvard. Scored an empty netter to clinch the Colgate win. Missed the Union game with an injury, but could be back this weekend. Career vs. Quinnipiac: 6 gm ; vs. Princeton: 6 gm / / Woody Hudson Jr. Forward Greece, NY Chicago (USHL): Woody Hudson split his final junior season between the Indiana Ice and the Chicago Steel, finishing the year with 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points in a combined 65 games. He had 14 goals and six assists and was captain of the Indiana Ice. The son of Woodruff and Wanda Hudson, he attended Milton Academy and was part of the 2011 New England Championship team. He also played football and lacrosse at Milton : Made his collegiate debut against Maine in game one and scored his first collegiate point with the primary assist on Brian Ward s goal. Scored his first collegiate goal in game two at Ferris State. He had his first multi-point game with two assists in game two of the Northeastern series. Scored his first ECAC goal in the first period at Yale. Scored the game winner in game two of the playoff series against Brown. Had six goals and five assists ins 37 games as a rookie :Woody scored six goals and assisted on six others in his sophomore season. He had a goal and an assist in game two at Niagara and had a two-goal night in a 6-3 win over Dartmouth at Appleton Arena. He picked up his first post-season assist in the RPI series :Scored his first of the season on a one-timer against RIT...picked up his first assist of the year in the RPI game and had an assist at Princeton. He was on the roster at the University of Minnesota in , but did not play in any games. He has two years of collegiate eligibility for the Saints. He was a member of the Minnesota state champion high school team at Benilde St. Margarets and is that school s second leading scorer and first all time in assists.
