Appleton II Head Coach Mark Morris and the No. 14 Saints hit the road for a single game at Clarkson in Coach Morris return to Cheel Arena. It is the first of two consecutive single-game weekends for the Saints. Last Time Out Junior goaltender Kyle Hayton moved into second on the all-time wins list for St. Lawrence with his 51st and 52nd against RPI and Union last weekend. The ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week, he made 72 saves in a 2-0 week, including a combined 34 stops in the third period. Alex Gilmour and Carson Gicewicz scored in the 2-1 win over the Engineers, with Gicewicz s game-winning tally come with just under three minutes remaining in regulation. Against the Dutchmen, Gilmour - the ECAC Rookie of the Week and Rookie of the Month - scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals; the latter with 17.8 seconds left in regulation to help the Saints to a 4-3 come-from-behind win. Nolan Gluchowski and Gavin Bayreuther - who returned from injury on Saturday - scored the first two goals for St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence leads the ECAC Standings with 25 points, though the second-place Dutchmen have two games in hand on the Saints. St. Lawrence owns the tiebreaker with a win and tie against Union this season. Power Play Points of Note The Saints scored on the power play in eight straight games for the first time since the season before their streak was halted against Cornell on Jan. 21. Twelve Saints have power play goals so far this season with Mike Marnell and Jacob Pritchard leading the team with three each. Nolan Gluchowski is the team leader in power play points with 10 (1g, 9a). Another Record in the Books Kyle Hayton - who already holds the program record for career shutouts and shutouts in a season - set the program record for ties in a season at Yale on Jan. 14. He broke Alex Petizian s record (set in ) with his sixth against the Bulldogs. As a team, the Saints are one tie shy of the program record for ties in a season (7) set by the team. 2 About the Golden Knights Clarkson is slumping of late with a record through its last 10 games, including losses in the last three games and is just at home this season. They have been outscored in those games. The Golden Knights last win at Cheel Arena came on Dec. 2, 4-2 over Dartmouth. 21 players have recorded at least one point this season for Clarkson, with 10 in double digits at this point in the year. Sam Vigneault leads the team overall with 24 points, while Jordan Boucher is Clarkson s leading scorer in conference games (4g,9a - 13pts). Troy Josephs has a team-high eight goals in ECAC games, including three game winners. James de Haas is the overall leader in power-play points with 10 (4g,6a). The Golden Knights are ranked 20th in Division I in scoring offense (3.07 G/GM) and are tied for 17th in power play at 20.0%. The Golden Knights penalty kill is 28th (83.5) and they are sixth in combined special teams (54.9). Against Clarkson in December On Dec. 9 the Saints beat Clarkson 3-1 in Appleton Arena to finish out the first semester behind goals from Nolan Gluchowski, Michael Ederer and Mike Marnell and 34 saves from Kyle Hayton. The Saints had built a 3-0 lead through two periods before allowing a power play goal by James de Haas midway through the third period. The Saints have won the last three games against the Golden Knights - all of which were played at Appleton Arena - including last year s playoff series win. St. Lawrence s last win at Cheel Arena came on Jan. 31, They also shutout the Golden Knights earlier that same season on Nov. 1, 2014, 4-0. 3 Men s Hockey Staff Charles W. Appleton Men s Hockey Head Coach Mark Morris Record at St. Lawrence Overall at Home on the Road on Neutral Ice Mark Morris was named the Charles W. Appleton II Head Men s Ice Hockey Coach at St. Lawrence in May of 2016, returning to the Saint program after a highly successful career as a collegiate and professional head coach. Morris, who served as an assistant coach to Joe Marsh from and was part of the 1988 national runner-up team, returned to the North Country after a year as head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League. He holds the distinction of being the only coach to have won 300 college games and over 300 professional games. He was the seventh all-time winningest coach in the AHL and had the third highest win total among AHL coaches when he left Charlotte to take over at St. Lawrence. A Massena native and a 1981 graduate of Colgate University, Morris played defense for the Raiders and went on to a three year professional playing career which included stints with the Dallas Black Hawks and the New Haven Nighthawks before entering the coaching profession as an assistant coach at Union College in Morris spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Clarkson following his SLU tenure and compiled a collegiate career record of He broke into the professional coaching ranks as a coach with Manchester of the American Hockey League in 2006 where he spent eight years as head coach, compiling a record of with seven playoff appearances. He joined the Checkers in July of 2015 after serving the previous season as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in the NHL. He has also served as a special assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach with the Vancouver Canucks, an assistant coach with the Ontario Hockey League s Saginaw Spirit and coached at the Northwood School in Lake Placid. Associate Head Coach Mike Hurlbut Hurlbut returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach to start the season, became a full-time assistant in and was named Associate Head Coach in the spring of A First Team All-America and First Team All- ECAC selection for the Saints in 1989 and a member of the two winningest teams in Saints hockey history in 1988 and 1989, Mike is a 1989 graduate of St. Lawrence and had a long and successful professional hockey career. He spent 14 years in the International and American hockey leagues and played 29 games, scoring one goal and assisting on eight others, in the National Hockey League. He was inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in He was selected to play in three American Hockey League All-Star Games, was named a Second Team AHL All-Star in and was the longest serving captain in Rochester Americans franchise history, wearing the C for five seasons. He was a team captain in eight of his 13 pro seasons. Among the teams he played for were the Houston Aeros, Minnesota Moose, Binghamton Rangers and the Rochester Americans. He played 23 games with the New York Rangers in and also had NHL appearances with the Quebec Nordique and the Buffalo Sabres. Assistant Coach Matt Deschamps Matt Deschamps joined the St. Lawrence staff as an assistant coach prior to the season. He spent the last two years in Austria with EC Red Bull Salzburg Hockey Club as the head coach of RBS U18 team and served the club in director and development coordinator roles. Matt led the Red Bulls to two of its most successful seasons at the U18 level winning an EBJL Championship in 2015 and in 2016 led all EC Red Bull Teams with a.750 winning percentage playing against Swiss U20 and U18 teams from Finnish, Czech, USA and Canada. Deschamps played for the University of Maine, graduating in 2005 with a bachelor s degree in public policy, management. He notched an assist on the triple-overtime goal to win the 2004 Hockey East Championship, made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NCAA Finals. As a senior, Deschamps was an assistant captain, recipient of the First Annual Shawn Walsh Memorial Scholarship, and was presented with the Richard Britt Award for Perseverance. After college, Deschamps attended training camp with the San Jose Sharks in During a five-year professional career, Deschamps had stops playing in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. 4 Rookies in January Alex Gilmour was the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week last week as well as the Rookie of the Month for January. He has six goals and two assists in nine games played. He scored three goals, including a game winner, in last weekend s home sweep of RPI and Union. Three St. Lawrence first-year players led the conference in scoring last month: - Ben Finkelstein led all rookie scorers with nine points on three goals and six assists. - Gilmour and Carson Gicewicz were tied for second with eight points. Gicewicz tallied four goals and added four assists for the Saints in January. Goalie of the Week Kyle Hayton earned Goaltender of the Week honors after leading ECAC Hockey netminders with 72 combined saves; 34 of which came in the third period (16 vs. RPI, 18 vs. Union). He also had a combined 2.00 goals against average and.947 save percentage against the Engineers and Dutchmen in a 2-0 weekend. He is now this season for St. Lawrence. Scoring By Committee In an interview with USCHO Live! last week Coach Morris explained the Saints were scoring by committee after losing a couple of their top point producers to upper body injuries. Here s what he meant by that: Twenty-two of the team s 25 skaters have at least one point this season and 20 have registered a point in a conference game. Nineteen Saints have scored goals and 15 of those players have two or more. Eleven players are in double-digits for overall points, with four posting 10 or more points in conference games. Fourteen players have contributed to the Saints power play scoring. Every member of the class of 2020 has at least a point for St. Lawrence in their rookie seasons. Hobey Hopefuls Defenseman Gavin Bayreuther and goaltender Kyle Hayton are among 66 nominees from 40 Division I schools for this year s Hobey Baker Award. Fan voting is open until March 5th at National Numbers (Inside the Top-20) Gavin Bayreuther is second in Division I in points per game by defensemen (1.14). Kyle Hayton ranks 12th in goals against average (2.08), sixth in save percentage (.934) and is tied for 17th in win percentage (.654). Hayton is also tied for third in shutouts (4). The Saints are seventh in scoring defense, allowing just 2.18 goals per game. The Saints have the sixth-best penalty kill in the country entering the weekend at 86.9 percent. Conference Numbers St. Lawrence has the fewest goals against in ECAC Hockey games (23). Kyle Hayton leads conference netminders with a 1.42 GAA and.953 save percentages. The Saints boast the league s best penalty kill at 88.9% in conference games. Mike Marnell is tied for 14th among forwards with 13 points (9g, 4a) in conference games. He s 15th among all skaters. Among defensemen, Gavin Bayreuther and Nolan Gluchowski are tied for third with 12 points (3g, 9a). Ben Finkelstein is tied for fifth (4g, 7a). Shot Blockers The Saints have blocked 385 shots this season to their opponents 295. Eric Sweetman leads the team with 62 blocked shots while Nolan Gluchowski has 37 and Ben Masella has 31. Joe Sullivan is leading the forwards in blocked shots with 28. Goals Breakdown First period: 26 goals for; 13 goals against. Second period: 31 goals for; 26 goals against. Third period: 28 goals for; 22 goals against. Overtime: no scoring. All of the six games that have required overtime for the Saints this season have ended in a tie. Senior CLASS Nominees Defensemen Gavin Bayreuther and Eric Sweetman are among 15 Division I men s hockey student-athletes selected as candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. St. Lawrence is the only school with two players on the list. The Saints assistant captains are two of four ECAC Hockey representatives selected as candidates. 5 Saints of December The Saints were 2-1 in December in conference games with wins over Dartmouth and Clarkson at home, after Harvard handed them their first conference loss and snapped a nine-game unbeaten streak. St. Lawrence finished the first semester second in the ECAC Hockey standings; one point behind first-place Union. With a point against the Golden Knights, Gavin Bayreuther tied former Saints All-America George Hughes 13 for second on the all-time points list for St. Lawrence defensemen with 105 on his career. Kyle Hayton finished the first semester as the league leader in goals against average (2.08), save percentage (.935) and total saves (530). Saints of November The Saints were overall in the month of November with a record in conference games. Kyle Hayton who was the goalie of record in all those games, was both the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month and the HCA National Player of the Month. Both Kyle Hayton and Gavin Bayreuther had record-breaking performances for St. Lawrence in November. Hayton became the program leader in career shutouts, breaking Bill Sloan s 60-year old record (9) with a 2-0 win over Quinnipiac. Bayreuther became the all-time leader in goals by a defensemen, breaking Brian McColgan s 28-year-old record (31) with his 32nd goal against RPI in Nov. 12. The Madhouse on Miner After last weekend s sweep of RPI and Union at home, St. Lawrence is in ECAC Hockey games in Appleton Arena this season. Additionally, the Saints are overall in their own barn so far this season and have outscored opponents in those games. Away From Appleton So far this season the Saints are overall with a mark against conference teams on the road after last weekend s split at Colgate and Cornell. The Saints have scored 35 goals and also allowed 35 goals on the road this season. With a pair of ties in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the Friendship Four Tournament, they are in neutral site games. Between the Pipes Junior netminder Kyle Hayton - an ECAC Hockey preseason All-Conference team member - and sophomore Arthur Brey are the veteran netminders for the Saints. They are joined by first-year Daniel Mannella out of Whitby in the OJHL. Preseason All-ECAC Defenseman Gavin Bayreuther and goaltender Kyle Hayton were named to the ECAC Hockey preseason All-League team in September, as voted on by league coaches. The Saints and defending champion Quinnipiac were the only two league schools with multiple players on the list. The Saints were second in preseason voting. Returning All-American Gavin Bayreuther became the 35th All-American in Saints Hockey history last season after becoming the first defenseman to ever lead the team in scoring. The Caanan, N.H. native led the Saints with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points. He scored the double-overtime game winner in the quarterfinal series against Clarkson to send the Saints to Lake Placid for the second year in a row. The Saints Captains For the season the Saints named senior center and Eau Claire, Wis. native Alexander Dahl as the lone captain. Dahl served as an assistant during the season. Assistants for are a trio of senior blueliners in Gavin Bayreuther, Ben Masella and Eric Sweetman. Together, the four seniors accounted for 58 points last year, including 40 assists and blocked a total of 159 shots. Richter Watch Kyle Hayton is one of 20 Division I goalies named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List for 2017, as announced by Let s Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation. He was also a nominee in Past winners include: Thatcher Demko (Boston College), Zane McIntyre (North Dakota) and Connor Hellebuyck (UMass Lowell). 7 The Newcomers The Saints added seven first-years to the roster for the start season: Will Harrison, Ryan Garvey, Carson Gicewicz, Sam Kauppila, Ben Finkelstein, Taggart Corriveau and Daniel Mannella. Alex Gilmour joined the Saints at the break for te second half of the season. Three rookies (Harrison, Garvey, Gicewicz) came to St. Lawrence via the USHL, two (Finkelstein and Corriveau) are straight out of U.S. prep schools in and Ontario natives Garvey and Mannella played in the OJHL, while fellow Ontario native Gilmour played in Pembroke in the CCHL. The Breakdown The current St. Lawrence roster is composed of seven seniors, eight juniors, five sophomores and eight first-years. Eight of the team s 28 rostered players are Canadian, representing two provinces in Ontario and Quebec. The 20 Americans playing for the Saints this season represent 14 states: California, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin. Sixteen players list a USHL team as their last team, while four played in the BCHL, three in the OJHL, one in the NAHL, one in the CCHL and three came from U.S. prep schools.
