Keenan Suthers scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the loss to the Lakers last week, doubling his goal total from his rookie season and scoring in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Arthur Brey turned in another solid performance in net, finishing with 36 saves. He s made 30-plus saves in six of his eight games played this season, including 31 saves in 31 minutes at Union. He s also made 35 or more in four games played, with a season high of 37 in back-to-back games at Michigan. St. Lawrence is looking to snap a six-game losing slide against Minnesota this weekend. Their last win came on October 19 against Holy Cross. Minnesota is coming off a weekend split at Wisconsin last weekend to open their Big Ten schedule. Both teams come into the weekend with low goal totals, as Minnesota has only scored 15 goals to date and the Saints have just 12. The Saints are outscoring the Gophers in the second (7-6) and third periods (3-2), but Minnesota has scored seven goals in the first 20 minutes to the Saints two. Both of those first period goals came in St. Lawrence s 3-2 loss at RPI. That is also the only game in which the Saints have scored first so far this season. Neither team generates a lot of shots, as the Saints are averaging 20.8 shots/game and the Gophers average 24.4 shots/game. 2 Clayton Phillips is among the top-50 Division I defensemen in points per game, averaging 0.71/game through seven games played so far this season. Eleven skaters have registered multiple points for the Gophers already this season, while 17 have at least one point heading into the weekend. Goaltender Mat Robson ranks 24th with a.920 save percentage so far this season. He s through five games with a 2.66 GAA. Nearly half of the Gophers 15 total goals this season came in a 7-4 win over current No. 1 team Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, October 7. They followed that up with two more seven-goal outings in exhibition wins over the USA Under-18 Team and Trinity Western. (Note: exhibition stats do not count towards season totals/) The Gophers are the second-most penalized team in the country heading into the weekend, averaging 18.3 PIMs/game. Minnesota has the 25th-best power play to date, operating at 20.7 percent (6-29). They also have the 18th-best penalty kill (83.8%, 31-37) and are eighth in combined special teams (56.1%). THE SERIES WITH THE GOPHERS This is second meeting between the Saints and Gophers in the last three seasons, after going 17 seasons without facing each other from to The series is tied entering this weekend s doubleheader, as the team s traded wins through the first four meetings before tying, 2-2, at Appleton Arena on October 29, One of the Saints two wins in the series came in the 1988 NCAA Frozen Four, as the Saints edged the Gophers 3-2 in Lake Placid, N.Y. to advance to the National Championship game. Pete Lappin completed a hat trick with just 12 seconds remaining to give the Saints the win. Current Associate Head Coach Mike Hurlbut was a member of the Saints team and part of the Saints last win over the Gophers. The first meeting between the two teams came in the season. LAST TIME OUT The Saints hosted the Gophers in at Appleton Arena and came way with a 2-2 overtime tie - one of seven that season for the Saints. After St. Lawrence built a 2-0 lead with goals from Ryan Lough and Gavin Bayreuther (SH), Minnesota scored two extra-attacker goals in the final minute of play to tie the game and force overtime. The Gophers for goals from Jack Sadek and Mike Szmatula in the tie. Carson Gicewicz is the only current Saint with a career point against the Gophers, as he assisted on the Lough goal. Current Gopher Eric Schierhorn finished with 22 saves in the tie, while former netminder Kyle Hayton made 42 stops for the Saints. COMING HOME Sophomores Dylan Woolf and Cade Gleekel, as well as first-year Zach Risteau, will all play their first collegiate games in their home state of Minnesota this weekend. AGAINST THE BIG TEN This weekend s games are the last of five against Big Ten schools for St. Lawrence this season. St. Lawrence is 0-3 against Big Ten opponents after falling twice to Michigan and once to Wisconsin. LINE THEM UP Ryan Garvey, Keenan Suthers and Carson Gicewicz have played as a line for the Saints in all but two games this season. While Gicewicz leads the team with six points, Suthers and Garvey both have four. No other forward has more than two heading into the weekend. In the seven games they ve played together Suthers has four goals, Gicewicz has four assists and Garvey has three assists. INSIDE THE BOX The Saints are the fifth-most penalized team in Division I so far this season, averaging 16.7 PIMs per game. Dylan Woolf is second in Division I with 42 penalty minutes through seven games played this season (6.00/game). IT S ABOUT TIME IN OVERTIME St. Lawrence has not won an overtime game since March 2016 when they beat Clarkson in back-to-back overtimes in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals to advance to Lake Placid. Since then, the Saints are in overtime games, all under Coach Morris. They went during and were in overtime last season. The Saints have yet to play an overtime game in RANDOM ROSTER FACTS The average age of the Saints team is years, making them the 10th-youngest program in Division I. The average weight is 190 lbs which is tied for second in Division I with North Dakota, and Robert Morris. Maine has the highest average weight at 193 lbs. St. Lawrence - which traditionally has not been known for its size - is tied with seven other teams, including ECAC Hockey schools Cornell, Quinnipiac and Clarkson with an NCAA-leading average height of 6 1. DUAL-SPORT ATHLETES Rookie defenseman Mark Mahoney is just one of three Division I men s hockey players that are dual-sport athletes this season, as he will also play lacrosse (DIII) for St. Lawrence. Mahoney is joined by Army West Point s Dalton MacAfee (lacrosse) and Canisius s Jake Zurat (baseball). SAINTS AT DEVELOPMENT CAMPS Five Saints were invited to NHL Development Camps over the summer: Carson Gicewicz went back to the Dallas Stars camp for the second year in a row, Keenan Suthers went to the Pittsburgh Penguins camps, Bo Hanson was in camp with the San Jose Sharks and Callum Cusinato and first-year David Jankowski both attended the Calgary Flames camp. David s older brother, Mark Jankowski, is in his third season with the Flames. THE LEADERSHIP GROUP Carson Gicewicz and Dylan Woolf were officially named captains for the Saints in the week leading up to the team s game against Mercyhurst on November 10. Seniors Michael Laidley, who served as an assistant captain in , and Michael Ederer will serve as assistant captains for The Saints started the season with all four players serving as assistants. 3

THE SEASON IN REVIEW With a tough October schedule, the Saints got off to a rough start and went through the first month of the season and were before picking up their first win at then-no. 5 Wisconsin on October 28, 6-3. The Saints other seven wins all came in the second half of the season, starting with Vermont (3-2) and a 2-0 shutout win over UMass Lowell to win the Catamount Cup at Vermont in late December. Daniel Mannella was named the tournament s MVP after earning his first collegiate win against Vermont and first career shutout against the River Hawks. St. Lawrence swept an ECAC Hockey weekend against Brown and Yale behind stellar goaltending from netminder Arthur Brey, who picked up his first career shutout in the win against the Bulldogs. The Saints also picked up wins against Canisius in non-conference play and Colgate last season. The year ended with a first-round playoff series loss at Dartmouth, as the Big Green edged the Saints in a decisive third game, 2-1. St. Lawrence lost leading scorer Mike Marnell ( ) to graduation, along with Nolan Gluchowski, Ryan Lough, Matt Purmal, Patrick Steinhauser and Joe Sullivan. THE NEWCOMERS The Saints added 10 first-years to the roster for the season: Jeff Clarke, Carson Dimoff, David Jankowski, Mark Mahoney, Ted McGeen, Andrew McIntyre, Kaden Pickering, Zach Risteau, Michael Schumacher and Emil Zetterquist. The class is comprised of six forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender. They hail from three countries (Canada, Sweden and the United States), represent four states (Arizona, New York, Minnesota and North Dakota) and four players from the province of Ontario. David Jankowski was named the CCHL Player of the Year in after leading the league in scoring and was also the recipient of the CCHL Sportsmanship Award. Zetterquist joins Alftberg as the only two Swedes to play for St. Lawrence in program history. Pickering (Chilliwack - BCHL) and McGeen (Wellington - OJHL) played against each other in the RBC Cup in the spring, with Pickering and the Chiefs taking the win. McIntyre and Clarke were teammates in Oakville last season. THE BREAKDOWN The current St. Lawrence roster is composed of three seniors, four juniors, 11 sophomores and 10 first-year players. Eleven of the team s 28 rostered players are Canadian; all from Ontario. The 15 Americans playing for the Saints this season represent 10 states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin. Nine players list a USHL team as their last team, while five played in the BCHL, eight in the OJHL, one in the NAHL, three in the CCHL and one from both the EHL and a U.S. prep school. 6 Men s Hockey Staff Mark Morris is in his third season as the Charles W. Appleton II Head Men s Ice Hockey Coach at St. Lawrence. He was hired in May of 2016, returning to the Saints program after a highly successful career as a collegiate and professional head coach. Morris, who served as an assistant coach to Joe Marsh from and was part of the 1988 national runner-up team, returned to the North Country after a year as head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League. He holds the distinction of being the only coach to have won 300 college games and over 300 professional games. He was the seventh all-time winningest coach in the AHL and had the third highest win total among AHL coaches when he left Charlotte to take over at St. Lawrence. Charles W. Appleton Men s Hockey Head Coach Mark Morris Record at St. Lawrence Overall at Home on the Road on Neutral Ice A Massena native and a 1981 graduate of Colgate University, Morris played defense for the Raiders and went on to a three year professional playing career which included stints with the Dallas Black Hawks and the New Haven Nighthawks before entering the coaching profession as an assistant coach at Union College in Morris spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Clarkson following his SLU tenure and compiled a collegiate career record of He broke into the professional coaching ranks as a coach with Manchester of the American Hockey League in 2006 where he spent eight years as head coach, compiling a record of with seven playoff appearances. He joined the Checkers in July of 2015 after serving the previous season as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in the NHL. He has also served as a special assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach with the Vancouver Canucks, an assistant coach with the Ontario Hockey League s Saginaw Spirit and coached at the Northwood School in Lake Placid. Associate Head Coach Mike Hurlbut Hurlbut returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach to start the season, became a full-time assistant in and was named Associate Head Coach in the spring of A First Team All-America and First Team All-ECAC selection for the Saints in 1989 and a member of the two winningest teams in Saints hockey history in 1988 and 1989, Mike is a 1989 graduate of St. Lawrence and had a long and successful professional hockey career. He spent 14 years in the International and American hockey leagues and played 29 games, scoring one goal and assisting on eight others, in the National Hockey League. He was inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in He was selected to play in three American Hockey League All-Star Games, was named a Second Team AHL All-Star in and was the longest serving captain in Rochester Americans franchise history, wearing the C for five seasons. He was a team captain in eight of his 13 pro seasons. Among the teams he played for were the Houston Aeros, Minnesota Moose, Binghamton Rangers and the Rochester Americans. He played 23 games with the New York Rangers in and also had NHL appearances with the Quebec Nordique and the Buffalo Sabres. Assistant Coach Matt Deschamps Matt Deschamps joined the St. Lawrence staff as an assistant coach prior to the season. He spent the last two years in Austria with EC Red Bull Salzburg Hockey Club as the head coach of RBS U18 team and served the club in director and development coordinator roles. Matt led the Red Bulls to two of its most successful seasons at the U18 level winning an EBJL Championship in 2015 and in 2016 led all EC Red Bull Teams with a.750 winning percentage playing against Swiss U20 and U18 teams from Finnish, Czech, USA and Canada. Deschamps played for the University of Maine, graduating in 2005 with a bachelor s degree in public policy, management. He notched an assist on the triple-overtime goal to win the 2004 Hockey East Championship, made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NCAA Finals. As a senior, Deschamps was an assistant captain, recipient of the First Annual Shawn Walsh Memorial Scholarship, and was presented with the Richard Britt Award for Perseverance. After college, Deschamps attended training camp with the San Jose Sharks in During a five-year professional career, Deschamps had stops playing in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League.
