They are currently overall heading into the last nonconference weekend before opening their ECAC Hockey schedule next weekend hosting Princeton and now-no. 6 Quinnipiac. The Saints dropped last Friday s game at UMass Lowell 5-2. Carson Gicewicz and Matt Purmal scored to erase a two-goal deficit and tie the game at 2-2 heading into the second period, but gave up two shorthanded goals in the second period and another goal early in the third in the loss. Drew Smolcynski put the Saints in front 1-0 in the first period of Saturday s game at Providence, but the Saints allowed four unanswered goals - including three on the power play - to fall behind 4-1 midway through the second period. Series Record Last Meeting W, 6-4 ( ) Alexander Dahl s scored the team s first shorthanded goal late in the middle frame against the Friars and Joe Sullivan followed shortly thereafter to close the deficit to 4-3, but Providence tallied another PP goal early in the third and would add another six minutes later to push to the eventual 6-3 margin. Junior Kyle Hayton took the loss in both games last weekend and was pulled on backto-back nights for the first time in his career. Both Arthur Brey and Daniel Mannella saw time in between the pipes in relief; neither allowed a goal. Junior Mike Marnell leads the Saints with two goals and six assists for eight points so far this season, while both Gavin Bayreuther and Jacob Pritchard have two goals and five assists for seven points. Joe Sullivan has a team-high three goals for the Scarlet and Brown. 2 About the Badgers Wisconsin enters Appleton Arena with a record after splitting series with Northern Michigan and Boston College their first two weekends. They re coming off a 4-3 exhibition win over the USA Under-18 Team on Oct. 21. The Badgers have eight NHL draft picks on their roster: Trent Frederic (BOS), Grant Besse (ANA), Cameron Hughes (BOS), Canton, N.Y. native JD Greenway (TOR), Luke Kunin (MIN), Jedd Soleway (ARI), Matt Ustaski (WPG) and Max Zimmer (CAR). Trent Frederic is tied with Seamus Malone as the team s leading scorer so far this season with two goals and four assists for six points; they re tied for 21st in the nation in points per game at Frederic is tied for third in that same category among Division I rookies. Tim Davison, who has five assists, is tied for fifth in assists per game at 1.25 and is fourth in points per game by a defensemen (1.25). Wisconsin leads the overall series The last meeting between the Saints and Badgers came in , as the teams split a weekend series in a pair of one-goal games in Wisconsin. The Badgers won the opener 3-2 and the Saints came back for a 2-1 win the following night. About the No. 12 Golden Gophers Before facing Clarkson on Friday night, Minnesota is after sweeping a weekend series with Alaska Anchorage before dropping a pair to nationally-ranked St. Cloud State last weekend, including a high-scoring 6-5 loss in overtime. Like Wisconsin, the Golden Gophers also played the USA Under-18 Team, winning 9-0 on Oct. 14. Minnesota has 12 draft picks on its roster: Jake Bischoff (NYI), Taylor Cammarata (NYI), Rem Pitlick (NSH), Brent Gates Jr. (ANA), Ryan Zuhlsdorf (TBL), Tommy Novak (NSH), Jack Ramsey (CHI), Steve Johnson (LOS), Jack Sadek (MIN), Jack Glover (WPG), Ryan Collins (CLB) and Ryan Lindgren (BOS). As a team, the Gophers are second nationally in scoring offense, averaging 4.75 goals per game.they have the eighth-best power play which is currently operating at 23.1%. 3 Men s Hockey Staff Charles W. Appleton Men s Hockey Head Coach Mark Morris Record at St. Lawrence Overall at Home on the Road Mark Morris was named the Charles W. Appleton II Head Men s Ice Hockey Coach at St. Lawrence in May of 2016, returning to the Saint program after a highly successful career as a collegiate and professional head coach. Morris, who served as an assistant coach to Joe Marsh from and was part of the 1988 national runner-up team, returned to the North Country after a year as head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League. He holds the distinction of being the only coach to have won 300 college games and over 300 professional games. He was the seventh all-time winningest coach in the AHL and had the third highest win total among AHL coaches when he left Charlotte to take over at St. Lawrence. A Massena native and a 1981 graduate of Colgate University, Morris played defense for the Raiders and went on to a three year professional playing career which included stints with the Dallas Black Hawks and the New Haven Nighthawks before entering the coaching profession as an assistant coach at Union College in Morris spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Clarkson following his SLU tenure and compiled a collegiate career record of He broke into the professional coaching ranks as a coach with Manchester of the American Hockey League in 2006 where he spent eight years as head coach, compiling a record of with seven playoff appearances. He joined the Checkers in July of 2015 after serving the previous season as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in the NHL. He has also served as a special assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach with the Vancouver Canucks, an assistant coach with the Ontario Hockey League s Saginaw Spirit and coached at the Northwood School in Lake Placid. Associate Head Coach Mike Hurlbut Hurlbut returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach to start the season, became a full-time assistant in and was named Associate Head Coach in the spring of A First Team All-America and First Team All- ECAC selection for the Saints in 1989 and a member of the two winningest teams in Saints hockey history in 1988 and 1989, Mike is a 1989 graduate of St. Lawrence and had a long and successful professional hockey career. He spent 14 years in the International and American hockey leagues and played 29 games, scoring one goal and assisting on eight others, in the National Hockey League. He was inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in He was selected to play in three American Hockey League All-Star Games, was named a Second Team AHL All-Star in and was the longest serving captain in Rochester Americans franchise history, wearing the C for five seasons. He was a team captain in eight of his 13 pro seasons. Among the teams he played for were the Houston Aeros, Minnesota Moose, Binghamton Rangers and the Rochester Americans. He played 23 games with the New York Rangers in and also had NHL appearances with the Quebec Nordique and the Buffalo Sabres. Assistant Coach Matt Deschamps Matt Deschamps joined the St. Lawrence staff as an assistant coach prior to the season. He spent the last two years in Austria with EC Red Bull Salzburg Hockey Club as the head coach of RBS U18 team and served the club in director and development coordinator roles. Matt led the Red Bulls to two of its most successful seasons at the U18 level winning an EBJL Championship in 2015 and in 2016 led all EC Red Bull Teams with a.750 winning percentage playing against Swiss U20 and U18 teams from Finnish, Czech, USA and Canada. Deschamps played for the University of Maine, graduating in 2005 with a bachelor s degree in public policy, management. He notched an assist on the triple-overtime goal to win the 2004 Hockey East Championship, made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NCAA Finals. As a senior, Deschamps was an assistant captain, recipient of the First Annual Shawn Walsh Memorial Scholarship, and was presented with the Richard Britt Award for Perseverance. After college, Deschamps attended training camp with the San Jose Sharks in During a five-year professional career, Deschamps had stops playing in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. 4 Preseason All-ECAC Defenseman Gavin Bayreuther and goaltender Kyle Hayton were named to the ECAC Hockey preseason All-League team in September, as voted on by league coaches. The Saints and defending champion Quinnipiac were the only two league schools with multiple players on the list. The Bobcats were picked to finish first in the league, while the Saints were second in preseason voting. Returning All-American Gavin Bayreuther became the 35th All-American in Saints Hockey history last season after becoming the first defenseman to ever lead the team in scoring. The Caanan, N.H. native led the Saints with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points. It was Bayreuther who scored the double-overtime game winner in the quarterfinal series against rival Clarkson to send the Saints to Lake Placid and into the conference tournament for the second year in a row. The Saints Captains For the season the Saints named senior center and Eau Claire, Wis. native Alexander Dahl as the lone captain. Dahl served as an assistant during the season. Assistants for are a trio of senior blueliners in Gavin Bayreuther, Ben Masella and Eric Sweetman. Together, the four seniors accounted for 58 points last year, including 40 assists and blocked a total of 159 shots. Career Numbers Watch Gavin Bayreuther is closing in on the 100-point plateau, entering the weekend with 89 points. He is also just two goals away from tying Brian McColgan s program record for career goals by a defensemen (31) which has stood since The Madhouse on Miner Friday s game against Wisconsin starts a four-game home stand for St. Lawrence. The Saints are 2-0 at home after a weekend sweep of UNH and Merrimack in Head Coach Mark Morris first games behind the bench. They have outscored opponents 10-3 in front of the home crowd so far this season. Away From Appleton The Saints are on the road this season and have been outscored in those contests. Their next road games will be ECAC Hockey contests at Union and RPI on Nov. 11 and 12, respectively. Between the Pipes Junior netminder Kyle Hayton - an ECAC Hockey preseason All-Conference team member returns for the Saints this season, as does sophomore Arthur Brey who was solid as a backup for St. Lawrence in The goaltending tandem is joined by first-year Daniel Mannella out of Whitby in the OJHL. Richter Watch Kyle Hayton is one of 20 Division I goalies named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List for 2017, as announced by Let s Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation. He was also a nominee for the award in Past winners include: Thatcher Demko (Boston College), Zane McIntyre (North Dakota) and Connor Hellebuyck (UMass Lowell). Finkelstein in Florida As the 195th overall pick of the Florida Panthers in the seventh round of the 2016 NHL draft, Ben Finkelstein became the first drafted player to wear the Scarlet and Brown since defenseman Matt Generous 09 was drafted in He is the 52nd draft pick in program history. Finkelstein comes to St. Lawrence from Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. The Newcomers The Saints added seven first-years to the roster for the season: Will Harrison, Ryan Garvey, Carson Gicewicz, Sam Kauppila, Ben Finkelstein, Taggart Corriveau and Daniel Mannella. Three rookies (Harrison, Garvey, Gicewicz) came to St. Lawrence via the USHL, two (Finkelstein and Corriveau) are straight out of U.S. prep schools in and Ontario natives Garvey and Mannella played int he OJHL prior to beginning their collegiate careers. 6 National Numbers Bayreuther is tied for 11th in the nation in points per game by a defenseman (1.17) and is first among ECAC Hockey blueliners in that category. Marnell is tied for 35th in points per game with 1.33 and 21st in assists per game with Bayreuther and Sullivan are tied with a number of other players in the assists per game category with 0.83 (50th). The Saints are tied for 11th in scoring offense averaging 3.83 goals per game. St. Lawrence is tied for 36th in scoring defense, giving up 3.50 goals per game. The Saints are seventh in the country in penalty minutes, averaging 22.2 per game with 133 PIM so far this season. The Breakdown The current St. Lawrence roster is composed of seven seniors, eight juniors, five sophomores and seven first-years. Seven of the team s 27 rostered players are Canadian, representing two provinces in Ontario and Quebec. The 20 Americans playing for the Saints this season represent 14 states: California, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin. Sixteen players list a USHL team as their last team, while four played in the BCHL, three in the OJHL, one in the NAHL and three came from U.S. prep schools.
